Someone else said ... it was Greg Lake (it occurred to me as I was typing). Father Christmas. It wasn't 500,000 pounds - that's a shit ton of money - but he said it was significant, and he made a joke about buying an island and inviting all his fans to visit him there.

The other way to get rich quick by writing a song is to have it used on a hit TV show, and negotiate to maintain the rights (good luck on that one nowadays). A different Portnoy was set for life after writing Where Everybody Knows Your Name. Every time Cheers airs somewhere, anywhere, he gets a few cents.
