From Jordan Rudess' Twitter:

QuoteDream Theater will be having closed/private auditions for our new drummer this month. We will let u all know the moment we make a decision!

Sounds cool. :)
I agree  :).

ddtonfire

They should turn these auditions into a reality show.

7StringedBeast

The drummer for my band used to take drum lessons from John Macaluso.  I feel like he might be a contender for the new drummer spot.  He has played with JLB for EoP live, and also lives on long island.  That'd be crazy if my drummer's old drum teacher becomes the new drummer for DT.  yay for vague associations.

My friend's music school's drum teacher is the original an current drummer for Toxik, and has played with Faith No More, Exodus, King Diamond, and many other bands.

You'd have to think he's auditioning because JLB wouldn't comment on if he was or was not auditioning. At this point, NO ONE will be confirmed as auditioning, but if he wasn't I'm sure James could've said so.

I also don't believe Virgil Donati would give up his free agent status to become a permanent member of any band.

TBH, I would like to see Johnny Mac with DT. I regularly listen to Ark's "Burn the Sun" and he did a fantastic job on it.

I checked out VD and while I was basically in awe of what I was watching and hearing, there's no way he'd fit in with DT. DT aren't nearly as crazily complex as he tends to be.

So since they're jamming with all the drummers this week... It could be worth it to find out what drummers are currently doing nothing (i.e. not on tour, not in the studio).
Also: it's quite possible that we hear something after this week.

I was on Donati's site earlier and his schedule appreared clear. I even checked out his forum, but there was not mention of it.

I know Virgil is in Holland thursday next week, but that is really possible with the audition.

You think they'll let us know the names of the drummers didn't make it?

Where did they say that they are jamming with them this week?

On james' and Jordan's twitter, and James stated that in an interview a couple of days ago.
And I'm pretty sure they were talking about this coming week, as in the next 5-6 days.

The funniest thing is, that it seemed like they were saying that all 7 drummers would be with them for the entire week.
Not sure if that is true though.

Mhmm, I don't know. You'd think they'd have them all there. I just want an announcement, I'm so excited to hear who they choose.

Well, they'd probably all have to be available for the full week. I would love to witness this process, I really would.

A far as announcing who didn't make it, I don't think the guys from DT would make that known. But I'm sure that it will leak out at some point.

Yeah, I think it'd probably be in bad form to talk about "the six guys who weren't quite good enough to make it into Dream Theater." Not to say that some of the drummers who get auditioned might not mention it themselves. I just doubt we'd hear about it from the band.

I was hoping my inability to come up with something for each of the original letters might provoke someone to actually do it.  Nice job.

D00d....NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!   Simon Cowell would end up ruining the band by putting some talentless prettyboy on the stool......  :tdwn

EDIT - Oh shit, I just read the last post HAHHAHAHAHA!!!  :lol

Last night I dreamt that I was going to watch DT in concert and realised they haven't got a drummer. Then I was told by another fan in the queue that Mike Mangini was in. Woke up before the gig started though... Well, you never know...

Adami

Ok fine, I had a dream a few nights ago that DT held a special open concert (in a field) to show the new drummer. And he was introduced by batman (don't ask) and his name was Van Crotch Rocket.

I kid you not.

I remember seeing DT on the first night of the Awake tour, and it wasn't Kevin Moore on stage. It was some short haired guy? Very strange.

I had seen Derek a few times with Alice Cooper but I did not recognize him.

I just read on wikipedia that Mike Mangini is currently teaching at Berkelee.  I doubt he would suddenly abandon that position.

And Terry Bozzio is way too old.

What about Deen Castronovo?

I mentioned Ted Kirkpatrick from Tourniquet earlier in this thread but had no good clips to offer.

Until now.

Here's him soloing over some Chopin (he's got a big classical side): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaJfFTbadKg&videos=aK3N4-oWPNo&feature=BF

Another from that same series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3IxNy4QIa4&videos=aK3N4-oWPNo&feature=BF

And, of course, some metal cred as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MSo3xQ0FwI&videos=aK3N4-oWPNo&feature=BF

Kirkpatrick also offers a lot of skill as a writer, as he has written probably about 75 percent (or more) of Tourniquet's music through the years.  I know DT probably isn't looking for a lot of writing input from a new drummer quite yet, but I still think the possibilities could be really cool.

Kevin Moore did not go on the Awake Tour.  He left before the album was released.  It was probably Derek that you saw.

And I am EXTREMELY jealous you got to see JLB in full stamina... >:(

That's a fantastic choice of song.  I didn't post it because I thought it was against the rules to put up links that were to officially released material not put there by the band itself.  But whatevs.  "Immunity Vector" is also a killer song to showcase his chops.

^ He is pretty good.

I just wonder if DT is looking for drummers that they already have connections with, or if it's completely open, because from the looks of it, it is invitation-only.  In that case, is DT really friends with Tournequet?

MuumiPeikko

My guesses are:
John Macaluso
Terry Bozzio
Virgil Donati
Joe Nevolo
Nick D'Virgilio

Most of all I want to see John Macaluso or Terry Bozzio. But Terry is almost 60 years old, an he lives in California.  :-\

chknptpie

The drummer from Lordi recently left the band to pursue drumming as himself, rather than a character... dun Dun DUN

I didn't like it... he is very good tho. i just didn't got what he was doing with his classical side approach... in that matter i like vadrums approach better.

But well.. just my opinion, not trying to bash or whatever.
