I really wouldn't want Thomas Lang in DT, eh.  From the instructional DVDs of his I've seen he just seems super cocky and maybe even more excessive than MP in terms of gear.

He's actually quite personable, and his clinics are very entertaining/humorous. Even if he wasn't, cocky is perfectly fine when you can back it up to that level. As for excessive gear, let the roadies worry about that.

Lang would certainly extend the theme of "no limitations" in a BIG way.

Yeah, I've never gotten the feeling that he's cocky. I think you're mistaking his quirkiness for cockiness.

Ah, right on.  I'm probably just subconsciously jealous :lol

I don't know if this has been posted as I haven't read the whole thread, but a realistic option would actually be Rod Morgenstein.  He's a killer drummer and him and Jordan are very close friends.

LudwigVan

They should hire Portnoy as a session drummer.

No arranging/composing/songwriting/lyrics/artwork design or album promotion on his part.... just drums.  Similar to what he did for Matheos/Moore on the OSI albums.

MykeHavoc

AwakeFromOctavarium

Except he probably won't agree.

MykeHavoc

Of course not. But it really would be an ideal scenario.

Yeah I posted that.  Plus, he's played with Myung in Platypus and Jelly Jam, so they presumably have some kind of chemistry as well.

That and he now teaches percussion at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. So half the band has performed/recorded with Rod, and half the band went to the school he now teaches at! I think he'd be a good pick for them, actually. And coming off recording sessions for the third Jelly Jam album, I'm sure JMX would play well with RM if they decide to bring him in. This entices me to listen to Platypus and TJJ today!

Anyone know what Rod Morgenstein's up to, lately?

Jodan could maybe convince Rod to give it a shot, I do think they can't just name someone they need to hold tryouts. A great test would be the following tunes:
1. The Mirror
2. Raise the Knife (Score Versoin)
3. The Great Debate (incredible drums, under rated song)
3. In the Name of my Father
4. toss in Acid Rain for good measure

I'm not ready to think about it.

Seriously, I feel like MP's shoes could never be filled in DT.  On top of all MP's talent technically, it's his creative drumming which really makes DT, DT to me.  Seriously, if you take the time to really really pay attention to what Mike play's where, it's absolutely perfect for the music.  Mike is the most musical rock drummer I have ever listened to.  Seriously, I don't think he can be replaced and still have DT sound anything like DT.

Bingo.

My emphasis added.

Wut.

What song is that?

hahaha.

Rod would be a wise, but safe choice. And I must say that he's never truly impressed me. But he'll get the chance now.

I'm putting my money on either Rod, or one of James' solo album drummers (Mike Mangini, and the other guy)

TTT
Erotomania
TDOE
TGD
ANTR

Man, I think I'd prefer DT with Mike Mangini than DT with Mike Portnoy.

LadyEars

I had a dream last night that DT announced their new drummer and his name was Mike Laparta. WTF?

I think it would really quite well.  He's an amazing drummer, his work on the new Winger DVD was great too.

Other options;

Thomas Lang
Virgil Donati
John Macaluso

Nihil-Morari

Virgil Donati would be totally awesome. Totally awesome.

Yep.  One of the best in the world.  :tup

YtseBitsySpider

I like Terry Bozzio for this too....but the more and more I think about it there's no way some established sessions guy is gonna step into these shoes. They just don't do that to each other (amongst the big boys) It will be some nobody.

Nihil-Morari

Well, Rod's a session guy too, right? Not in a solid band, I mean. Terry Bozzio and Virgil Donati are of equal awesomeness, although I think Virgil would be considering DT longer than Terry.

I didn't know if I should open a thread about this so I'm posting it here...

Havn't seen anyone post this before... sorry if it has been posted!

MykeHavoc

Wow. Who is this guy? Says he worked with Jordan?
If that's so, I'll bet he gets an audition. The guys reproduction is perfect.
Seems young and energetic as well.

omg i think i'm in love.

TempusVox

I agree. I was very impressed. He seems more than adequate from a drumming perspective, but how is he with creativity? Don't think you can answer that question with any bit of confidence. I was also thinking about the possibility of Bobby Jarzombek. He also is more of a session guy, but has creative chops in various bands he has been in, and is closer in age to the guys in DT. Might be a better fit.

Bobby is my favourite drummer at the moment.

He's totally something else, and creative as hell.

Plus: he has crash cymbals behind him, and that rocks.

HOLY. FUCK.

That TDOE vid with Charlie Zeleny has a barely noticeable edit in it.  Done in two takes.  Still very impressive.  Looked at a few Behold the Arctopus songs and the drumming is really good.  He has potential.

@Tempus: Never heard of Bobby Jarzombek until you posted that.  He's pretty awesome too.  Good thing about both of these guys is that, unlike Rod Morgenstein (who I still endorse as a replacement), they've proven they can do metal as well as the rock and soft stuff.  I haven't seen Rod do any metal stuff.  I'm sure he could do it though.

Actually there are at least 2 edits. Still pretty awesome though.

The Letter M

Apparently, there's some Youtube videos with Charlie Zeleny playing with Jordan Rudess at some live shows... so there's already a connection to someone in the band!

I read something where Charlie Zeleny sites Bobby Jarzombek as his greatest prog influence. The more I think about the possibility of Bobby J joining the band makes me weak at the knees. This guy is badass, and has the cred to back it up. The only guy that I think would make people not forget about MP, but certainly would make the greatest number of people happy with his ability and style. Bobby J is by far one of the greatest drummers in the world. His joining DT would melt your face off, and I think thats the kind of drummer they need to replace MP moving ahead.

Another clip for your enjoyment:

Amazing!   :metal

Adami

Bobby J is a great drummer. The only problem with him joining would be that if he does, the immediate reaction will be "Well....I guess they found an amazing temp drummer". I don't think he can be thought of as anything but a temp.
