I'm guessing it will be a guy JP already knows. Maybe Dave DiCenso from his solo album?

I dont want anyone who holds their sticks sideways like that.

You mean traditional grip? Why not? I mean, it doesn't feel natural when I do it, but some people REALLY pull it off.

Only joking.

Adami

Oh good.

I really hope that when they get a new drummer, he's a member of DT and not just an extra musician.

Definitely agree with you there.

Would Donati fit?
I know that he could play the material.  I don't know how he would fit in with the other guys.  Maybe.

MykeHavoc

Yeah, like Cozy Powell. What a shitty drummer, right? ::)

bloop

I hear Ringo is currently available.

Marco Minneman is fucking great in this video.

The second guy, Alex González, is the drummer of Mexican pop/rock band Maná. He's amazing!

lord-ruler

I like the guy that plays drums for dave matthews.  Forgot his name.

Carter Beauford.  He's insanely good, but all wrong for DT.

I think a lot of us are forgetting DTs metal side. All of these drummers are great prog drummers, but lack the metal attitude or dynamics.

Marco Minneman has played with Paul Gilbert and covered Racer X songs, and also toured with Necrophagist.

Oh that wasn't aimed at you. I don't know who Marco Minneman is really. But a lot of the other links, and whatever in this thread show good softer proggy drummers who would only half fit in DT.

Oh, haha. Okay, fair enough. :tup

Nihil-Morari

Please Virgil Donati.

Please.

Imagine The Dance of Eternity or Metropolis part 1 with him on drums, with a sick solo half way.

I really wouldn't want DT to go for a metal drummer, (Thomas Haake could do), cause they've overdone the metal thing anyway for the last few years. Bringing a drummer in from a metal point of view will only make them to overdo it more. But I'm feeling like (at least) Jordan and James are feeling more towards a prog rock type style for the new album.

Diverse much?

The Awesome

Thomas Lang would be the ultimate replacement.

changing_seasons

Thomas Lang or Rod Morgenstein sounds good to me.

Oh, and female drummers are so ...not hot.

Has anyone mentioned Jon Fishman the drummer from Phish? He is a showman just like Mike.  Wears a dress while playing.  I can imagine him and J.R engaging in dueling Vacuum cleaner Solo's.  The man knows his way around a Vacuum I can tell you that.

I disagree.  No disrespect to James, as he is a very talented singer.  But his voice is also on the thin side.  He needs someone to harmonize with him to make the vocal parts sound full and dynamic in a live setting.  And DT's songs have a lot of harmonies.  JP is too pitchy to carry that duty all on his own, and since Jordan and JM don't sing, that's what he would have to do if they don't pick up a drummer who can help out with the backup vox.
Deen Castronovo Singing wise perfect fit.  Not sure he has the drumming chops though.

Infinite Cactus

Deen Castronovo would be awesome for the singing. He could even do really high harmonies but I don't think the style would fit too well.

Quick List:

1. Mark Zonder - One of the most tasteful & musical prog drummers around.
2. Bobby Jarzombek - Mad skill and aggressive. One of the most underrated drummers IMO.

darkshade

has anyone mentioned Jon Theodore (ex-The Mars Volta)? this guy is sick, and could totally play Mike's parts. but he knows how to lay back and groooove

Nihil-Morari

Bobby Jarzombek could work too, would be weird to see such a drumkit on a DT stage, but that doesn't matter.

How about Thomas Pridgen? He's out of the Mars Volta, officially.

rumborak

Some of these drummers are actually so good that their work might preclude a return of MP. That is, they could play MP's stuff, but not the other way around.

I'd be fine with that. However, if he were to return, he'd most likely just re-write the stuff he wanted to, or just not play their songs.
