This is the first guy to come to my mind too. But I've seen clips of this Nigil D'virgilio (sp?) and he seems pretty damn good too.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

How has nobody said Neil Peart yet?
Because it's not possible?

Well, of course not, but I'm still surprised I was the only one to make the comment in jest.

People I'd like to see that wouldn't fit the style exactly but would be interesting:
Terry Bozzio
Vinnie Colaiuta (Hey, he's played with Megadeth)

People that would fit:
Thomas Lang https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llijK-zUoUs

I didn't know Thomas Lang was Austrian. :metal

And I can see why he would be a good pick. His style is kinda similar to MP's, but still different enough to be distinguished.

I think either Mike Mangini or Virgil Donati would make a good fit. It would suck for Derek if Virgil left Plant X to join his former band lol

Mat JB

Virgil Donati would be my first choice. Aside from the awesome drumming he's known for, he has a unique compositional acumen that could be a great asset to DT.

:lol Worked for Meshuggah and Devin Townsend (well, DKFH v1 for Devin)...

I'd like to see someone completely unknown and refreshing brought in. That way there'd be no pre-conceived ideas from both the band's writing or us for when new material is released.

Zantera

Portnoy left Dream Theater?  :omg:

Have i missed something here?
In my spare time I make music! Check it out. :)

On top of the playing ability, I'd want someone who might be able to match MP in terms of the energy and showmanship he brings to a live setting, and Nick D'Virgilio fits the bill.   ANd his vocals would be a nice plus.

my choice

Jarzombek is a great choice. And your clip perfectly shows why.

True, but DT should also consider a drummer's ability to groove an important thing. Technical chops are fine and well, but if he can't really groove, his value is limited.

MykeHavoc

He's been playing with Fates Warning the last few years. I am of the belief that he would fit. We can't really say he can't groove until, well, he proves he can't.

He can grove as well he's played with many, many bands and artists, not all Technical superior stuff either (Halford,Riot,Sebastian Bach)

I'm pretty sure this guy would be the perfect replacement:

Nathan Explosion

As said earlier, I doubt he ever would but I would love for it to be Martin Lopez, I loved his work with Opeth, especially Still Life.

Lynxo

Martin Lopez won't be able to tour due to his anxiety attacks. (That's why he left Opeth.)
Johan Langell won't be able to commit full-time to a band due to his family. (That's why he left PoS.)

Virgil Donati, Mike Terrana and Gavin are good choices, but Gavin probably won't leave PT.

I imagine they will use someone experienced, someone that a lot of people have heard of, as opposed to bring in someone completely new.

Vinny would be killer.  Saw him with Sting in 1993 and he is a monster.

MykeHavoc

I like The Mad Drummer idea. I mean Mike is his idol :lol

ReaperKK

Although I don't think it would work in the long term, and I prefer him much more in PT I'd like to see Gavin Harrison's take on some new DT, and I'd like to see how he'd mix up older DT songs.

I'll probably support any new drummer for DT, there are many possibilities out there.

LudwigVan

Bill Bruford can come out of retirement.

rumborak

I think Mangini, if he's interested, is the closest fit. He has the right energy level/groove mix.
NDV would be totally out of place.

rumborak

LTE

Sure other drummers have better groove than someone like Thomas Lang, but the mere thought of him in DT making music with them.
:metal :metal :metal :metal

Who cares if he overplays most things?  :lol

Or Vinnie:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kE8fKhcU_ss

He would bring a great Jazzy/Fusion vibe to the band.

EPICVIEW

I hope its really an unknown drummer, so there is no baggage of a drummer leaving a current band and taking his "known style" into DT.

Moonchild

Matt Sorum! :tup

I'm kidding on that one. Simplest drummer alive.

Nick Menza!  :tup

Hmm. Would definitely be cool. But I was under the impression he had dropped off the face of the Earth.

LudwigVan

I'll also throw in Chris Quirarte, the drummer from Redemption
