With MP leaving, who do you think/who would you like to replace him?

Personally, I vote Gavin Harrison.

drummerThatShreds87

JC Bryant from TetraFusion
Travis Orbin from SEA
Gavin Harrison
drummer from those DT cover split screens

Perpetual Change

Definitely not Gavin Harrison.

I want them to nick someone out of Avenged Sevenfold. Just for swapsies. Not the Rev, obviously. That'd be rubbish.

Is Synyster Gates any good on drums?

I'd like to point out that was definitely just me being silly. Little joke. Probably a misaimed one. But just to clarify, in no way do I believe that A7X has stolen Mike Portnoy. That'd be a very churlish and reductive way of looking at things.

Although I do like the idea that they keep swapping members until they all end up in each other's bands. That'd be ace. Avenged Sevenfold just becomes Dream Theater, under a different name.

Hahahahaha. Okay. Good. Sorry.

Genuinely, though, there was a fella who was auditioning for Frost* a while back, but fell through. Can't remember his name. I think he was a drummer for Badly Drawn Boy, at one point. He blew me away, a bit. Dunno if he might be UK based, though.

EDIT: Alex Thomas!

chrisbDTM

marco minnemann
travis orbin (probably wouldnt fit, but i love him)

Sir GuitarCozmo

How has nobody said Neil Peart yet?

ReaPsTA

I don't really have any names, and it's not something I'm in the mood to really look at.

In terms of what he brings to the band though? Aside from being able to play the old material (both technically, and having a big enough kit to handle all the cymbal work), I hope they get someone who's able to write really creative parts without trying to influence the music overall too much.

I'm not ready to think about it.

Copied from my post in the big-long thread:

Nick D'Virgilio? I wouldn't mind seeing him join DT, even if just for an album or tour or two. He's known the band for awhile, and toured with them with SB a couple times, so he knows them. He's certainly a VERY capable drummer, and while he doesn't have the ruff-n-gruff vocals that MP does, he could still do backing vocals to some extent. Also being a lead vocalist, there's a chance that he and JLB could do some really cool harmony stuff. He also does a lot of song-writing and I think between him and JP, they could pump out some great tunes in the Awake/FII sense. Nick's pop-sensibilities with the band's current popularity could push them to higher heights than BC&SL did, and be good publicity for Nick (who's been touring with Frost*, Agents Of Mercy and his own band Spock's Beard).

Well, honestly, I don't know what criterion will be used to get the new drummer but IMO I don't think they will want to replace Mike at all, they will want to get something NEW and different. With that said, the arrays of possibilities are too extended to name a drummer.

In all seriousness - I'd like to see someone who ISN'T a metal/ thrash/ whatever drummer.  I'd like to see them get someone who is a little more on the Fusion side of things, but who can rock out when needed.  Not someone who can, "double bass as fast as possible" or play as many fast fills as possible.  I'd like to see them get someone like how Portnoy was between 1992-1996.... tasteful, yet technical.

orcus116

A jazz drummer would be sick.

I mean, really, the man isn't THAT busy... except he just finished a summer-long stint in Ontario with Cirque, and is touring Europe with SB this month, but after that... who knows. I'd REALLY love to see him work with DT. His over-all rounded skills behind and away from the drum kit would really give new life into DT's song writing.

As cool as that would be, they'd need a metal drummer to be able to play their older metal songs.

Who is the guy on LaBrie's solo record? He seems like a good choice.

Seriously, I feel like MP's shoes could never be filled in DT.  On top of all MP's talent technically, it's his creative drumming which really makes DT, DT to me.  Seriously, if you take the time to really really pay attention to what Mike play's where, it's absolutely perfect for the music.  Mike is the most musical rock drummer I have ever listened to.  Seriously, I don't think he can be replaced and still have DT sound anything like DT.

robwebster

Yeah, I agree that D'Virgillio is the obvious choice. Just comes down to whether he can bear to leave Spock's Beard.

He's got the chops, he's about the same age, he's got a good working relationship with the boys, and he'd add something new without rocking the boat.

I'm not sure whether he'd want to be the second key player to leave Spock's Beard, though. The money'd definitely be better. But still.

Perpetual Change

Seriously, does anyone know what John Langell's been up to since leaving Pain of Salvation?

OptionalPlayer

Mark Zonder will be the only good replacement.

Mangini, Harrison, and Bozzio cannot replicate the style Portnoy had.

Even then - I don't want a replacement.

Mabye a different style add a new dimension to the band.

Actually, thinking about it, if Nick did record with DT, it'd be mirroring what he did with Genesis back in 1997. Which is ironic considering what a friend of mine was comparing this to earlier - she said it was like when Phil Collins left Genesis back in the 90's, and then the band went on without him and recorded a rather lackluster album, which featured Nick D'Virgilio on some tracks.

Hopefully this situation doesn't happen with Dream Theater. I would hate to see them flop after such a successful album like Genesis had with We Can't Dance. It's funny, though, because earlier this year Mike compared himself to Phil in such a way that he was working so hard, all the time, with various projects and bands. Guess he did one more thing like Phil as well... :sadpanda:

Would he be healthy enough to tour with DT? I mean, we all know why he left Opeth...that being said, he would be an excellent fit I think.
