Perpetual Change

Just like I thought A7X were getting a massive upgrade with Portnoy, it's pretty obvious that Dream Theater would be rebounding on one of the hottest chicks around with that Bobby guy.

I know a guy who is interested in the DT drummer spot.  He's pretty good, plays in a local prog band, and studied with Thomas Lang.  I know he can play Portnoy's stuff.  I figure there are lots of guys like him who will be contacting DT's management.

Just saw this on Blabbermouth and thought I should post it.  It's an interview with Jordan where he mentions his work with Rod Morgenstein.  Could this be a hint to us all, what do we all think??

https://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=146061

"Many years ago I went to see THE DREGS play," Rudess recalled. "This was before my career was doing anything. I remember looking at this drummer [Rod Morgenstein] and thinking, 'This drummer is so amazing. It would be so incredible to have him one day play on my music.' But I was just a fan in the audience. As a matter of fact, I didn't even have a good seat. I was way in the back.

"Fast forward a few years later and I'm getting a call from the manager of THE DREGS asking me about the possibility of doing a gig with them," the keyboardist said. "Next thing you know I'm at Steve Morse's house in Florida, and I'm going through stuff with Steve, and then in walks Rod. And next thing you know I'm doing this gig with THE DREGS, and Rod and I become the best of friends. Fast forward a little bit from there, and I'm doing a very unusual album, the RUDESS/MORGENSTEIN PROJECT. It's kind of like a dream come true. Weird stuff can happen. Dreams can definitely come true."

Seems like a blatant hint to me.  Maybe he is trying to ease the idea into people.

AwakeFromOctavarium

Honestly, I wouldn't mind some unknown guy getting MP's spot at all. I know there are many popular and talented drummers out there, but I'd love to see some fresh talent and ideas. Not too young though, since all DT members are bit aged already.

tri.ad

The only issue with Rod Morgenstein could be his age. He's 57, after all. But if it works out, why not?

Still, my favourites remain the two MMs.

How much before though??  The band new well before we did that this split was on the cards.  IMO this is more than a coincidence.

I don't know if Rod could join the band because he's quite old. But you never know...

I love the idea of what a Rod Morgenstien would do to the DT's sound, but I doubt it would work. He's older than Jordan, and I'm not sure how he'd feel about the heavier aspect of Dream Theater's music.

Here's a cool drum solo from the Winger DVD, I think he could cover Mike's parts really well.  Even for his age, he's still got the chops.

Having watched the Bobby Jarzombek clips I'm feeling much better. There may be life after MP after all. He would be awesome.
Morganstein is an excellent drummer. I've seen him many times with Winger( who's music has prog elements many of you may be surprised to hear... but maybe not on Seventeen!). Not as excited about him as Bobby J though.
Donati would be good but probably temporary. he seems to work harder than MP.

Maybe Richard Christy for the Howard Stern show.

EPICVIEW

what if the band used one of those wind up chimp toys with the cymbols?

that would be ground breaking..no band has done it yet.. :metal

Maybe Richard Christy for the Howard Stern show.

I love his stuff when he played on The Sound of Perseverance for Death.   And his Howard Stern-related persona makes him an interesting choice for DT.

edit: And apparently he's no stranger to the band:

"I'm so honored to have been invited to play a drum solo with one of my all time favorite drummers Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater. I was so nervous because not only was the show in front of a huge crowd at Jones Beach Ampitheater in Long Island, New York, but also sitting next to me would be a true drumming legend! I met up with Mike before the show and we hung out on his bus and mapped out our drum solo. The solo went really well and I had a blast ripping it up with Mike on his massive drum kit! I have video footage of the solo that I'm currently formatting for web viewing, until then check out the pictures. "

Just a fun idea for speculation.

List off who would be the choice for:

Technical:
Groove:
Big kit:
Small kit:
DT's best friend:
DT's revenge at MP:
Short term:
Long term:
MP Replica:
New sound:

You get the jist... feel free to add what ever categories, I don't know much about drummers even though I date one  :eek

Slain

DT's revenge at MP: Kevin Moore

MykeHavoc

Richard is my favorite drummer period. But there's no way he would do it, as Mike is one of his friends and he makes WAY more money doing comedy. That is why he essentially retired from touring. The dozen or so Charred Walls of the Damned shows he did recently were his first in 6 years.
That being said, I would've loved to see what he would've brought to the table.

MykeHavoc

Dream Team

Technical:  Lang or Carey
Groove:  Ringo Starr
Big kit:  Terry Bozzio
Small kit:  Me ;D
DT's best friend:  Charlie Benante
DT's revenge at MP:  David Prater
Short term:  Mike Mangini
Long term:  Mike Mangini
MP Replica:  Neal Peart
New sound:  Mike Mangini

This thread inspired me: Why wouldn't YOU be the next drummer of Dream Theater? :-)

See the thread in musician's forum

and the Dream Theater's New Drummer contest.

idk guys who do think could replace him

im saying jon karel previously in the number twelve looks like you. amazing percussionist

Adami

I just checked out the guy in your post. Good drummer, but horrible for DT.

People need to realize that DT need a metal drummer. A straight prog, fusion or whatever drummer isn't going to fit in no matter how good they are. They need someone who thinks metal.

...Jon Karel, is that you? :lol

I kid, I kid... but I sort of agree with Adami. They need someone who has experience with metal music, but I don't see that being the ONLY factor in the band's decision-making process when auditioning drummers. I think musical flexibility would be high on that list, and if the drummer can do metal to an extent, but they like his other performing qualities, who is to say they won't pick someone who is more proggy or fusion than metal? It might help them breathe some new life into their music.

That was so hard to listen to. And really doesn't help. That drumming is hardly metal. Like I said, he seems like a very good drummer.

Oh yes, i remember this band. There's definitely talent in there, but it's not DT worthy IMO.

its death metal dude

Still painful to listen to, not death metal at all, and actually I can't even tell what the drums are doing in most of it, all I hear (as far as drums go) is some snare here and there. I guess it's the youtube quality.

Last.fm says mathcore/progressive metal.

I don't know. He's definitely a good drummer, but the question is how diverse he is because DT plays a wide variety of material.
