OK folks, time for another round. Think I'll get some nods out of this one...
32-Metallica-Master of Puppets(1986)
Had to get the hometown boys on here. I actually saw them open in a Day on the Green show before they hit it big, the headliner was The Scorpions, but I was too busy trying to get lucky to appreciate it. Just another musical regret on my list. Anyways, this was really my introduction to Metallica. I first had my eyebrows raised by seeing the One video, but this was the album I turned to after. What hit me most was the extension of the songs, introducing to me at least, the longer, more varied instumentals than the glam and NWOBHM did, feeding right into my proggy heart that was all ready a huge Yes fan at the time, and was starting to grow my prog roots with Marillion and IQ. This album is a staple on the jukebox when playing in my pool league now, we kick ass when Metallica is on!!!
“Pain monopoly, ritual misery, chop your breakfast on a mirror.”
Suggested Songs: Battery, Master of Puppets, Disposable Heroes
31-Rush-2112(1976)
The title song fucking blew me away the first time I heard it. Still does actually. As much as I love the Temples part and the big finale, it is the softer elements, especially Discovery, that hit home. Alex’s guitar work is some of my favorite on any album. And aside from Twilight Zone, I love every other song on this thing, especially Lessons and Something for Nothing, but as we all know, this one is all about 2112.
“See how it sings like a sad heart and joyously screams out its pain, sounds that build high like a mountain, or notes that fall, gently, like rain”
Suggested Songs:2112, Something for Nothing, A Passage to Bangkok
30-Pink Floyd-Dark Side of the Moon(1973)
The masterpiece. Brilliant from note one to the end. I cannot praise the structure and form of this one enough. It took me a while to get my head into this one, I was a Wall fanboy from day one, and kind of ignored a lot of their other stuff, even though this was the work that got them all the kudos and set the records. Around age twenty, I finally dug into it, and realized why it got the respect, and that respect was well deserved. Every song is killer, but the standouts to me were always Us and Them, and the Brain Damage/Eclipse finale.
“You lock the door, and throw away the key, there’s someone in my head, but its not me.”
Suggested Songs:Time, Us and Them, Brain Damage/Eclipse
