OK, I've been dying to get this update in. Mind you, this was not planned, but when I saw what three albums I was going to be posting together, I had to draw a breath. Three all around agreed upon rock and roll heavyweights, all would be ranked in any public magazine or radio top 50, and one usually has the no.1 or 2 spot on most public list.....
38-Led Zeppelin II(1969)
It’s fucking Zeppelin, they should be on everyone’s list in my opinion. They didn’t break down the doors of the sixties rock standards, they fucking destroyed them. Introducing musical elements unheard of before, they created paths that bands would be walking for generations to come. The folksy Ramble On, (a song about LOTR for chrissakes), the click-clock of the horses hooves pacing the song, fucking brilliance. Thank You, a deeply moving song that will touch any person’s soul. The transition from Heartbreaker to Living Loving Maid, one of the best ever. If you haven’t listened to this, do so now, period.
“And so today, my world smiles, your hand in mine, we’ll walk the miles.”
Suggested Songs: Ramble On, Heartbreaker, Living Loving Maid, Whole Lotta Love, Thank You
37-The Beatles-Abbey Road(1970)
The token submission from the mop tops, I always felt that Abbey Road was why they made every album before it. All the studying, working, and experimentation that came before united in this one. Two perennial classics in Here Comes the Sun and Something, songs I can listen to at any time to improve my outlook on life. The highlight though is the 16 minute Medley, starting with You Never Give Me Your Money and ending with The End, it showcases all the elements that made the Beatles one of the greatest bands ever.
“And in the end, the love you take, is equal to the love you make.”
Suggested Songs: Medley, Something, Come Together, Here Comes The Sun
36-The Who- Tommy(1969)
The original, the ground breaker, the first rock opera. This one set the tone for all to follow, and did it in a stellar albeit confusing fashion. I never really wrapped my head around the story of it until I saw the Broadway Production, and how the Pinball fit into the whole thing. Later in life, the concept of being mentally shut off to the world gained new interest in me though, and I appreciated the album on a whole new level. Musically, there is much brilliance here, mostly in the instrumental parts, such as Sparks and the Underture. Daultrey comes of age on this one too, as seen in Amazing Journey and the timeless See Me, Feel Me. If you don’t believe that, watch the Woodstock video of the song, arguably one of the greatest live vocal performances ever.
“Sickness can surely take the mind, where minds can’t usually go, come on the amazing journey, and learn all you should know.”
Suggested Songs:Amazing Journey/Sparks, Pinball Wizard, Acid Queen, Were Not Gonna Take It/See Me, Feel Me
