More of a best of fan for both Styx and Tesla.  Agree with Tac, Blind Melon is dreadful.

Love Tesla.  I like their heavier stuff the best.

Love, Love Styx  Can't say enough good things about Styx and if you haven't seen the line up they have now, get the hell to one of their shows.

Blind Melon....not so much.

JJ, those first 4 Tesla albums are great..and deep.  I would imagine that you have heard them completely, so that's cool, but one listen to Mechanical Resonance should convert you to being more than a "best of" fan.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

I've posted one album that might be considered hippie. Just cause I was born in the sixties in San Francisco and have seen the Dead over 30 times doesn't make me a hipp......wait.....ah fuck.

OK, I've been dying to get this update in. Mind you, this was not planned, but when I saw what three albums I was going to be posting together, I had to draw a breath. Three all around agreed upon rock and roll heavyweights, all would be ranked in any public magazine or radio top 50, and one usually has the no.1 or 2 spot on most public list.....

38-Led Zeppelin II(1969)
It’s fucking Zeppelin, they should be on everyone’s list in my opinion. They didn’t break down the doors of the sixties rock standards, they fucking destroyed them. Introducing musical elements unheard of before, they created paths that bands would be walking for generations to come.  The folksy Ramble On, (a song about LOTR for chrissakes), the click-clock of the horses hooves pacing the song, fucking brilliance. Thank You, a deeply moving song that will touch any person’s soul. The transition from Heartbreaker to Living Loving Maid, one of the best ever. If you haven’t listened to this, do so now, period.

“And so today, my world smiles, your hand in mine, we’ll walk the miles.”

Suggested Songs: Ramble On, Heartbreaker, Living Loving Maid, Whole Lotta Love, Thank You

37-The Beatles-Abbey Road(1970)
The token submission from the mop tops, I always felt that Abbey Road was why they made every album before it. All the studying, working, and experimentation that came before united in this one. Two perennial classics in Here Comes the Sun and Something, songs I can listen to at any time to improve my outlook on life. The highlight though is the 16 minute Medley, starting with You Never Give Me Your Money and ending with The End, it showcases all the elements that made the Beatles one of the greatest bands ever.

“And in the end, the love you take, is equal to the love you make.”

Suggested Songs: Medley, Something, Come Together, Here Comes The Sun

36-The Who- Tommy(1969)
The original, the ground breaker, the first rock opera. This one set the tone for all to follow, and did it in a stellar albeit confusing fashion.  I never really wrapped my head around the story of it until I saw the Broadway Production, and how the Pinball fit into the whole thing. Later in life, the concept of being mentally shut off to the world gained new interest in me though, and I appreciated the album on a whole new level. Musically, there is much brilliance here, mostly in the instrumental parts, such as Sparks and the Underture. Daultrey comes of age on this one too, as seen in Amazing Journey and the timeless See Me, Feel Me. If you don’t believe that, watch the Woodstock video of the song, arguably one of the greatest live vocal performances ever.

“Sickness can surely take the mind, where minds can’t usually go, come on the amazing journey, and learn all you should know.”

Suggested Songs:Amazing Journey/Sparks, Pinball Wizard, Acid Queen, Were Not Gonna Take It/See Me, Feel Me

Led Zepp: Not a big fan of this band, but they have some great songs.

Abbey Road: Wow, what a band. The Beatles are my #1 band (and always will be) and Abbey Road is perhaps their best one. This could be my #1 album of all time, or at least a Top 3.

Tommy: Amazing album by an amazing band. The very first rock opera, and many great songs here.
Zydar is my new hero.  I just laughed so hard I nearly shat.

That's what makes these things so hard. Think about the albums I left off. I can tell you now that Abbey Road is the only Beatles album on the list. That means I left off Sgt. Peppers, Revolver, and the White Album, three fucking amazing albums. And that's just the Beatles. So much fucking music to be narrowed down, I think that's why I could only do this by a "amount of life spent listening to it" approach. The only exceptions are newer albums, such as ADTOE, that I know will get their fair share of spins in the long run.

:2metal:

Pieces of Eight is my favorite Styx album - probably because it's the last of their true "prog" (well, prog for them :lol ) albums.  I would've listed different recommended tracks and ranked it considerably higher, but that's just me.

Led Zep II :2metal:  Not my favorite Led Zeppelin album, but that's not to say it ain't a damn good record. :hat

I would've ranked Abbey Road considerably higher also, but that's because it's my favorite Beatles album.  Funny aside - back in the days before Styx became Styx (they were known as TW4 back then), they would play the 2nd half of Abbey Road live sometimes.  Would've LOVED to have been able to see that, but I was either still in the womb or a baby at that time. :)

Tommy :2metal:

There is a great Beatles cover band in my area called the Sun Kings that finish every set with the Medley from Abbey Road, and do it very well.

What can you say about those 3 albums?!  Iconic I say.

I think that Tommy, Who's Next and Quadrophenia are one of the best 3 albums in a row ever.

You stole the word I was about to use!  And it's the only appropriate word to describe these three bands.

Zeppelin... my left shoulder (4 symbols tattoo) appreciates.
Beatles ... well, they created the genre that became classic rock.
The Who ... legendary band, but I never did get in to Tommy :sadpanda:

I always considered these three, along with Floyd and the Stones as the quintessential 5 bands of Classic Rock.
That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad

I've never been much of a Beatles fan... to be honest, I find their music to be rather boring. With that being said, I understand their massive musical influence, and that certainly does deserve appreciation.

That's some classic shit right there in that update.  :tup

Seriously.

Let's get three more in...

35-Triumph-Just a Game(1979)
This was arguably my first “favorite” album. Got a hold of this one around age ten, and wouldn’t let it go. The opening track Movin’ On was the hook, Lay it on the Line was the line, and Hold On, hoo boy what a sinker. I believe a lot of my spiritual being, and how music lies at the center of it, that I have now began developing because of Hold On. Yes was too complicated for my young mind, as was a lot of the other artist I was spinning at the time, but Hold On was simple and clean,”no matter what life is throwing at you, hold on to the music, crank it up, and let it carry you.” I still use this today, 32 years later. That is the power of song.

“Listen to your heart, and hold on to your dreams.”

Suggested Songs-Hold On, Lay it on the Line, Young Enough to Cry, Just a Game, Moving On

34-Tool-Undertow(1993)
When Tool came on to the scene, they literally floored me. I think what hit me most was an aggressiveness and anger I had not seen in a band in ages, and a dark side that fueled what at the time was a very dark soul. Prison Sex has to be the most disturbing song I have ever heard, the blunt and exposure to the inheritable aspect of childhood sexual abuse, just so brutally honest, if anything, I had so much respect for them taking on the issue in such a manner. The musicianship is flawless, and Maynard’s voice was deep with emotion and power. It was new, intense, and dark, I loved it.

“I’ve come around full circle, my lamb and my martyr, this will be over soon, you look so precious.”

Suggested Songs:Prison Sex,Sober

33-Fish-Fortunes of War(1994)
Always a huge fan of Marillion, and that flowed into Fish’s solo work. Having seen him live, I can tell you he is THE best frontman around, he runs the show, he owns the audience, without question. In a small club setting, it isn’t a concert, it is a bunch of good friends sitting around, drinking and listening to him play, he is a part of every thing, up to stealing peoples drinks from the front rows. This live acoustic album, taken from an acoustic tour in the late 90s, showcases that vibe perfectly.

Suggested Songs:The Company, Lucky, Just Good Friends,Fortunes of War

Tool... :wtf:  I've tried, and - either they or I have failed.

Fish/Marillion... I like what I have, but never got to deep with him/them

Great call with Undertow. Fun to listen to and even funner to play on geetar. That album and Rage Against the Machine's debut were two of the biggest albums I used to get comfortable figuring out songs by ear.
