Title: lonestar's Top 50 Albums v. The Soundtrack of My Life-Honorable Mentions....
Post by: lonestar on August 29, 2012, 08:30:56 AM
All right!!! Here we go!!!!
OK, so I took a slightly different approach to this thing. I poured through my life’s musical history, and tried to select the albums that had an impact. There are some here that I hear occasionally, some not much anymore, and some I still can’t stop spinning after 30 years. My reviews will be short and sweet for the most part, as I don’t have the music history knowledge that a lot of you cats do, and I really didn’t feel up to researching 50 albums. But if there is something of note to be said, I will say it. I will also be including many live albums, since they played a huge part in my musical upbringing and life today. These are the 50 albums that at one time or another helped shape not only my musical self, but my whole well being.

Music is the background to my life. There is a place of peace that exist in my head that only music can take me to, a place I need to go to often. These are the ways I travel there….

50-Pete Townshend-All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes(1982)
The first of many installments from Pete and The Who. The Who was the backbone of my musical adolescence. Though I went through many phases growing up, they were a steady presence in all of them, and still are today. We each have our specific musicians that speak into our souls, Pete is one of mine. No other band or musician catered to my inner angry teen like he did, through both music and lyrics. This was Pete’s third solo effort, and the first one where he started to experiment in his writing. Songs like Communication and Uniforms have a new wave effect to them, reflective of the times, though the most succesful pieces were the more traditional rock songs like Slit Skirts, Somebody Saved Me, and Stardom in Acton. Also shown well in this album is Pete’s spirituality, something that had been more masked in such songs as Who Are You, takes front stage in The Sea Refuses No River and Somebody Saved Me. He has been a guide to me for most of my life, as will be shown further in the list.

"The sea refuses no river, remember that when the beggar buys a round."

Suggested Songs:Slit Skirts, The Sea Refuses No River, Somebody Saved me.

49-Montrose-Montrose(1973)
Classic rock personified, that’s all I can say about the debut by Ronnie Montrose, and also the debut of Sammy Hagar. Much of my musical taste was dictated by my older brothers, the oldest being a high school radio DJ when I was a mere eight years old. At this young age I was fed the classics of the day, and this was high on that list. Aggressive, pounding, eclectic, and sultry, this album has a taste of everything that makes rock music great.

"And since you've been gone I've been feeling bad, I'd come over to your place but I'm afraid of your dad." Yep, classic 70s.

Suggested Songs:Bad Motor Scooter, Rock Candy, Space Station No.5

48-Demon-British Standard Approved(1985)
Who the fuck is Demon you ask. They were one of the more obscure participants in the new wave of British metal, riding the coattails of the likes of Saxon and Maiden, and like those bands, were staples of my youth.  Unlike those bands, they took a major change, mostly influenced by Pink Floyd, and turned prog, not a popular movein the early eighties. When I got this album, I was expecting another series of headbanging tunes, what I found was to me, at the time, sheer brilliance. This was my introduction into the concept album. A cohesive storyline of the working class men aboard a luxury British liner, and the descent into madness of one. Personal and vague, it leaves a lot to be interpreted by the listener, and upon introduction to many subsequent concept albums, it doesn’t hold as well, but I give it it’s due props for introducing me to the prog metal concept album. Also of note is the presence of a great metal voice in Dave Hill.

"Through the cold in the air, I breath the fear you are feeling, break free, catch up with them now."

Suggested Songs: Touching the Ice, From the Outside(but in all honesty, these track can’t be separated, there is no stand alone song on this one)

I got all the write ups done, and pics loaded. Gonna try and do three a day, so try and keep up please......

Townsend..with the WHO  huge fan...his solo stuff never caught my attention and the songs that did could have easily been written for the WHO

Montrose  :tup

Demon...although a huge fan of NWoBHM almost always considered them second tier..not familiar with this album though  might have to check it out

They were second tier for me too, for their first few albums, just something that made me feel elitist, then this one came out and totally changed shit up. First time I had ever seen a band jump genres like that.

I love Pete's work in any way, shape, or form, he is the top dog in my book.

It's a good one, I think it's really where he put the stamp on his solo style, which is pretty far from most of The Who stuff.

Big Demon fan here - good to see another fan here on DTF. This is a good album but I prefer Night of and Taking The World.

The Montrose is a good album.

Won't listen to Townsend as a matter of principle though.

Good start though. Following.

Get the fuck out of here, really? :faint:

Didn''t think I'd see another fan of them. Night of the Demon was one of the ones we listened to, along with Unexpected Guest. Never went beyond BSA though, kinda changed shit up after that one.

OK, kinda anxious to get to the meat and potatoes of the list, plus I'm working the next five days with three double shifts, so let's squeak in an update now...

47-The Plimsouls-Everywhere at Once(1983)
The last of the “who the fuck is that?” bands, most every one from here on out should be recognized in some manner or another. These guys were an accident to me, a new wave/punk cross breed of a band, they only got attention because of their appearance in the movie Valley Girls. I don’t even know how I got a hold of it, but it was a great album, and was the sound track to my days skiing in Lake Tahoe as a teen. The perfect beat, the perfect sound for the time and situation. I’m just paying some respects on this one.

“Well I was smashing rock in the burning sun, ninety nine years and my work ain’t done.”

Suggested Songs:Oldest Story in the World, Million Miles Away

46-The Kinks-Give the People What They Want(1981)
One of my all time favorite bands. I don’t own a ton of their studio stuff, I fell in love with their live act, which I have seen many, many times, but this album does represent a change from their sixties roots into a more modern(at the time) rocking style. I also feel this is the one most accessible to new fans of the band. While The Kinks have many gems across their discography, their real appeal is in the energy they provide on stage, this album gives that energy in force. On a side note, Better Things is one of my main goto songs when I’m in the dumps, always brings a smile to my face.

”It’s really good to see you rocking out and having fun, living like you’ve just begun, accept your life and what it brings, I hope tomorrow you’ll find better things.” If I remember that, I usually do.

Suggested Songs:Around the Dial, Destroyer, Better Things

45-Pat Benetar-Crimes of Passion(1980)
My first crush, my first love, damn did I have it for Pat Benetar as a kid. Behind that crush though was a butt kicking album with a smoking hot woman at the front, something rarely seen at the time. She hit the scene with this album like a tank, aggressive songs, killer chords and riffs, and one of the best female rock voices ever. On a sidenote, the song Hell is for Children was one of the first to tackle the issue of child abuse, and is the only song she has played at every single show of hers.

”You shouldn’t have to pay for love with your bones and your flesh.” Powerful shit there.

Suggested Songs:Hell is for Children, You Better Run, Wuthering Heights

OK, that takes care of a few less heralded albums that had to be mentioned as a part of my younger life. I think you all will be more than pleased with the rest of this, for we now head into the prog........

Love Pat Benatar, and had a crush too. Especially on the Live concert from the Get Nervous tour. GN would be my favourite album but this one is good too. Great voice.

The other two, one I never heard of and The Kinks aren't for me.

Yeah, it's amazing the difference a couple of years can make.  The older siblings thing comes into play as well.  My musical tastes didn't evolve until about '85/'86, thus the noticeable influence of glam/hair in my top 50.

OK, let's get another update in......

44-Dream Theater- A Dramatic Turn of Events(2011)
Now that I got a few of the personal “had to” albums, we can move on to the meat and potatoes, and what better way that with our very own house band’s latest release. I won’t say much, just that for me, I was happy to see DT move back towards the more prog side of prog metal, that was what I fell in love with in the first place. I still remember the moment when I first heard OTBOA before the release, and knew I was in for a treat. Then I got an early listen to BiTS and was so hungry for the rest of it. I got the album roughly twenty days before the show, and listened to it solely the whole time in between. This album also has one of my top songs ever, Beneath the Surface.

”And then one day I stopped caring, and began to forget why I longed to be so close.” Damn man, just damn.

Suggested Songs: Do I really need to?

43-The  Who-Who Are You(1978)
The first installment from The Who. This was the last with drummer Keith Moon, he died a month after its release. The album has two faces to it, one was Pete continuing to work on his Lifehouse concept, which he started on Who’s Next, a concept album in the works about music being a spiritual track to life. The other side of the coin was Pete trying to bridge the gap between the prog of the day and the emerging punk scene, while putting it all to the familiar Who sound. For me, the emerging presence of Pete’s spiritual side takes shape here, specifically in the title track, a plea to God for answers to why a man degenerated and beaten can still receive the divine love.

”I spill out like a sewer hole, yet still receive your kiss, how can I measure up to anyone new after such a love as this.”

Suggested Songs: Who Are You,New Song, Guitar and Pen, Sister Disco

42-Rush-Exit…Stage Left(1981)
The first of many live albums on the list. I went to live albums often because of the energy they provided, and to give me that feel of being there, since I love the live show so much(probably seen somewhere around 300 concerts). I chose this one over the other Rush live albums solely because of the live Xanadu on it, but in all honesty, the whole track listing is just incredible. I think this album procured my love of Rush more than any studio album did, as is with other bands on the list.

Suggested Songs-The Trees, Xanadu, La Villa Strangiato, Spirit of the Radio

The first installment from The Who.

 ???

Three excellent albums, though Exit Stage Left is an interesting choice.  You don't often see live albums on these countdowns.

ADTOE is nowhere near my Top 50, haven't listened to that The Who album and I don't think I have heard that Rush album. I normally don't pay attention to live releases. I'm wondering how the hell I won your roulette  :lol

Mad love for ADTOE.  Not sure I'd put it in my top 50 but I'm still spinning the hell out of it.

Who Are You was the only album that Kieth Moon used a high hat. (Nugget)

And what can I say about Exit Stage Left.  I also owned the VHS of the show and played it as much as Marilyn Chambers's Behind The Green Door.

Montrose.  :tup  Good stuff.  I used to routinely nail "Bad Motor Scooter" at Thirsty Thursday karaoke.

Trivia about "Crimes of Passion".  When the album was coming out, they'd taken out a full page ad in Billboard magazine.  Benatar opened the magazine up to find that they'd airbrushed off her black tank top and airbrushed in cleavage, with a sign announcing the release date over where her boobs should be, despite her resistance to allowing the label to market her as some sort of sex symbol.

Another good update, Loney - not sure if I'd have ADToE in my as yet nonexistent Top 50, but that's not because I don't think it's a good album.

And what can I say about Exit Stage Left.  I also owned the VHS of the show and played it as much as Marilyn Chambers's Behind The Green Door.

We owned ESL on videodisc (not to be confused with laser disc, mind) and my brother and I about wore the thing out playing it to death. :metal

Lonestar, just got back from vacation. It's good to see you start your list. I'm sure it'll bring back memories for me as well.

The Lovely Mrs TAC and I were just listening to Crimes Of Passion the other day. I definitely prefer In The Heat Of The Night, though.

I have Montrose on vinyl. Never did listen to Demon. I will definitely check it out. Great picks on ADTOE (will be on my list too!) and Exit Stage Left, the first Rush album I bought in real time.

3 for 3 there buddy. Good picks.  I always was a big fan of all Rush's live albums, although the lack of ESL being a complete concert always put it behind A Show of Hands for me.

Oh, and I too had that VHS - now the DVD from the Replay compilation.

I think there haven't been too many Live albums on top 50s, as that (and "Best Of") was supposed to be a no-no. Things have evolved to a 'to-each-their-own' thing now.

Yeah, I figured you would hit all of those. In fact, nost of the rest of the list with the exception of a few bands should be very familiar to you.

As to the live albums, there were two that I just couldn't leave off in good concience, once I had made that decision, I let some more slip in.  It's somewhere between 6 and 9 or something, I love live albums.

Keep in mind, one of my biggest criteria in making this list was how much time did I spend listening to an album, those with the most time are on the list, for the most part. I did make a few exceptions, but that was the no. 1 criteria.

41-Blind Melon-Blind Melon(1992)
I had heard the hit No Rain when it came out, and liked it, but pursued the album no further until much later, and am sad for having missed out on all that time with such a soulful album. I had come home about six years ago to my roommate playing it, and was loving every bit of it, then heard No Rain, and was shocked that it was Blind Melon. From a bluesy ground, they built a standout album full of life and soul, carried by the insane vocals of the late Shannon Hoon. Eventually a lot of this one has turned into a go to album in my harder emotional times, when I need a song's shoulder to cry on, it just seems so fit right into that mood for me these days.

“And when your deepest thoughts are broken, keep on dreaming boy, cause when you stop dreaming it’s time to die.”

Suggested Songs:No Rain, Change, Tones of Home

40-Styx-Pieces of Eight(1978)
In the late seventies and early eighties,Styx had one of the best four album runs of any band. This one was one of my favorites from a lot of their music that I truly loved. Staples like Blue Collar Man and Renegade have been spinning my whole life, and I’m OK was one song I turned to in my youth when I was feeling down and picked on by the world. Just so much great music from this band at this time, I loved listening to them. Next to The Who and Yes, I spun them as a kid more than any other band,  and still listen to this album and the others(except Kilroy) a lot.

“But real life isn’t like school, there are lessons that just can’t be taught”

Suggested Songs:Blue Collar Man, Renegade, Great White Hope

39-Tesla-Five Man Acoustical Jam(1990)
Now, first off, I consider Tesla the most underrated band in American music. Classic rock that emerged from the hairspray and makeup of the glam metal era, they were about the most refreshing thing that could have come out in the eighties for me. No jokes, no gimmiks, just fucking rock and roll. All of my love for Tesla was spurned by this release. Though they had a number of great studio albums, I picked this one for a few reasons. First, it is a great live album, five guys just jamming and screwing around and having fun, it shows so well in the final product. Second, the covers, they do outstanding covers of Signs, Trucking, and We Can Work it Out. Third, and most important to me, it introduced me to the acoustic show, something that I love now. There was a wave of acoustic albums coming out at the time due to MTVs unplugged series, most notably to me was Clapton’s, but I feel Tesla’s effort topped them all.

Suggested Songs:Signs, The Way it Is, Modern Day Cowboy

Next one coming up tomorrow. Looking ahead, I think from a historical perspective, it might be one of the strongest three album updates in Top 50 history.....

Never had the Blind Melon album, but remember No Rain quite distinctly.  First year Uni... that song comes on at the dance club on campus, and the girl (Carmella ... true story, that's her name) in our Business class with the hottest body, and the biggest rack gets super excited, runs right be me and a couple of buddies to get to the dance floor, ends up doubling back and bouncing around for 4 minutes right in front of us.  For 20 years, I can't hear that song and not think of Carm.  That image is burned into my mind.

Good times.

Pieces of Eight... beauty album.

Tesla... you're bang on.  So many bands tagged as 'glam' never shook that stigma when the grunge genre took hold.  Never did like the Clapton unplugged, but this (and Rod Stewart) got a lot of spins on my CD player.  "We're from Fill A Dell FI EH!

Have you checked out the new Tesla?  It's pretty good.

I saw Tesla touring for their second album with Great White and Badlands, and man, did Tesla rip shit up live. If I were to break concerts down into individual sets rather than the overall concert experience, Tesla's set would be top five in my list of concerts I've gone to. They were a 70s hard rock band that somehow managed to get signed in the 80s, one of my favorite bands of all time.

OK, I've been dying to get this update in. Mind you, this was not planned, but when I saw what three albums I was going to be posting together, I had to draw a breath. Three all around agreed upon rock and roll heavyweights, all would be ranked in any public magazine or radio top 50, and one usually has the no.1 or 2 spot on most public list.....

38-Led Zeppelin II(1969)
It’s fucking Zeppelin, they should be on everyone’s list in my opinion. They didn’t break down the doors of the sixties rock standards, they fucking destroyed them. Introducing musical elements unheard of before, they created paths that bands would be walking for generations to come.  The folksy Ramble On, (a song about LOTR for chrissakes), the click-clock of the horses hooves pacing the song, fucking brilliance. Thank You, a deeply moving song that will touch any person’s soul. The transition from Heartbreaker to Living Loving Maid, one of the best ever. If you haven’t listened to this, do so now, period.

“And so today, my world smiles, your hand in mine, we’ll walk the miles.”

Suggested Songs: Ramble On, Heartbreaker, Living Loving Maid, Whole Lotta Love, Thank You

37-The Beatles-Abbey Road(1970)
The token submission from the mop tops, I always felt that Abbey Road was why they made every album before it. All the studying, working, and experimentation that came before united in this one. Two perennial classics in Here Comes the Sun and Something, songs I can listen to at any time to improve my outlook on life. The highlight though is the 16 minute Medley, starting with You Never Give Me Your Money and ending with The End, it showcases all the elements that made the Beatles one of the greatest bands ever.

“And in the end, the love you take, is equal to the love you make.”

Suggested Songs: Medley, Something, Come Together, Here Comes The Sun

36-The Who- Tommy(1969)
The original, the ground breaker, the first rock opera. This one set the tone for all to follow, and did it in a stellar albeit confusing fashion.  I never really wrapped my head around the story of it until I saw the Broadway Production, and how the Pinball fit into the whole thing. Later in life, the concept of being mentally shut off to the world gained new interest in me though, and I appreciated the album on a whole new level. Musically, there is much brilliance here, mostly in the instrumental parts, such as Sparks and the Underture. Daultrey comes of age on this one too, as seen in Amazing Journey and the timeless See Me, Feel Me. If you don’t believe that, watch the Woodstock video of the song, arguably one of the greatest live vocal performances ever.

“Sickness can surely take the mind, where minds can’t usually go, come on the amazing journey, and learn all you should know.”

Suggested Songs:Amazing Journey/Sparks, Pinball Wizard, Acid Queen, Were Not Gonna Take It/See Me, Feel Me

Led Zepp: Not a big fan of this band, but they have some great songs.

Abbey Road: Wow, what a band. The Beatles are my #1 band (and always will be) and Abbey Road is perhaps their best one. This could be my #1 album of all time, or at least a Top 3.

Tommy: Amazing album by an amazing band. The very first rock opera, and many great songs here.

That's what makes these things so hard. Think about the albums I left off. I can tell you now that Abbey Road is the only Beatles album on the list. That means I left off Sgt. Peppers, Revolver, and the White Album, three fucking amazing albums. And that's just the Beatles. So much fucking music to be narrowed down, I think that's why I could only do this by a "amount of life spent listening to it" approach. The only exceptions are newer albums, such as ADTOE, that I know will get their fair share of spins in the long run.

Pieces of Eight is my favorite Styx album - probably because it's the last of their true "prog" (well, prog for them :lol ) albums.  I would've listed different recommended tracks and ranked it considerably higher, but that's just me.

Led Zep II :2metal:  Not my favorite Led Zeppelin album, but that's not to say it ain't a damn good record. :hat

I would've ranked Abbey Road considerably higher also, but that's because it's my favorite Beatles album.  Funny aside - back in the days before Styx became Styx (they were known as TW4 back then), they would play the 2nd half of Abbey Road live sometimes.  Would've LOVED to have been able to see that, but I was either still in the womb or a baby at that time. :)

There is a great Beatles cover band in my area called the Sun Kings that finish every set with the Medley from Abbey Road, and do it very well.

I think that Tommy, Who's Next and Quadrophenia are one of the best 3 albums in a row ever.

What can you say about those 3 albums?!  Iconic I say.

You stole the word I was about to use!  And it's the only appropriate word to describe these three bands.

Zeppelin... my left shoulder (4 symbols tattoo) appreciates.
Beatles ... well, they created the genre that became classic rock.
The Who ... legendary band, but I never did get in to Tommy :sadpanda:

I always considered these three, along with Floyd and the Stones as the quintessential 5 bands of Classic Rock.

35-Triumph-Just a Game(1979)
This was arguably my first “favorite” album. Got a hold of this one around age ten, and wouldn’t let it go. The opening track Movin’ On was the hook, Lay it on the Line was the line, and Hold On, hoo boy what a sinker. I believe a lot of my spiritual being, and how music lies at the center of it, that I have now began developing because of Hold On. Yes was too complicated for my young mind, as was a lot of the other artist I was spinning at the time, but Hold On was simple and clean,”no matter what life is throwing at you, hold on to the music, crank it up, and let it carry you.” I still use this today, 32 years later. That is the power of song.

“Listen to your heart, and hold on to your dreams.”

Suggested Songs-Hold On, Lay it on the Line, Young Enough to Cry, Just a Game, Moving On

34-Tool-Undertow(1993)
When Tool came on to the scene, they literally floored me. I think what hit me most was an aggressiveness and anger I had not seen in a band in ages, and a dark side that fueled what at the time was a very dark soul. Prison Sex has to be the most disturbing song I have ever heard, the blunt and exposure to the inheritable aspect of childhood sexual abuse, just so brutally honest, if anything, I had so much respect for them taking on the issue in such a manner. The musicianship is flawless, and Maynard’s voice was deep with emotion and power. It was new, intense, and dark, I loved it.

“I’ve come around full circle, my lamb and my martyr, this will be over soon, you look so precious.”

Suggested Songs:Prison Sex,Sober

33-Fish-Fortunes of War(1994)
Always a huge fan of Marillion, and that flowed into Fish’s solo work. Having seen him live, I can tell you he is THE best frontman around, he runs the show, he owns the audience, without question. In a small club setting, it isn’t a concert, it is a bunch of good friends sitting around, drinking and listening to him play, he is a part of every thing, up to stealing peoples drinks from the front rows. This live acoustic album, taken from an acoustic tour in the late 90s, showcases that vibe perfectly.

Suggested Songs:The Company, Lucky, Just Good Friends,Fortunes of War

Tool... :wtf:  I've tried, and - either they or I have failed.

Fish/Marillion... I like what I have, but never got to deep with him/them

To me it just seems like someone rapped over heavy Zeppelinesque riffs for the most part. Had I been familiar with Zeppelin back in '96 I would've made that connection much sooner. So many similarities between the heavy usage of pentatonic motifs and the bass/guitar unisons. The drums are a tad more groove-oriented but not strikingly dissimilar from Bonham's style. I'd say STP kinda had the other half of Zeppelin's side down as well with their use of eclectic chords, and folksy-at-times approach on Purple.

My sister and I have almost completely different tastes in music... I was kinda late to shape her taste I guess :/
(woah, that sounded way more despotic that I thought it would  )

As you might have figured, I hadn't had much respect and appreciation for her choices in music.... until the day I heard a very nice tune coming from her room... She was listening to Sober by Tool.... I was like... "mmmmm...what the hell is that?" .... so she is the one who got me into Tool in the first place....

now we know that there are some bands that we both (might) like.. and there are some that we can't make each-other stand for a minute  :lol

Nice, my brother and I have a different thing, we shared the same room all our childhood, so our musical taste were identical. He introduced me to IQ, Marillion, and I introduced him to DT. Ever since Ive been doing the zine though, I've been bringin him like three killer bands a week, I think I'm overloading him. :lol

Same story with me and my bro.  He's the one who first played Black Dog for me when I was 14, and that totally changed my musical direction.  We still both like Classic Rock, but he hasn't evolved whatsoever.  The only post 90s music he listens to is stuff that is mainstream.  I keep trying to get him into some other bands that I know he'd love if he just gave it a chance.  But, his musical mind is not so open.  Oh well, his loss.

32-Metallica-Master of Puppets(1986)
Had to get the hometown boys on here. I actually saw them open in a Day on the Green show before they hit it big, the headliner was The Scorpions, but I was too busy trying to get lucky to appreciate it. Just another musical regret on my list. Anyways, this was really my introduction to Metallica. I first had my eyebrows raised by seeing the One video, but this was the album I turned to after. What hit me most was the extension of the songs, introducing  to me at least, the longer, more varied instumentals than the glam and NWOBHM did, feeding right into my proggy heart that was all ready a huge Yes fan at the time, and was starting to grow my prog roots with Marillion and IQ. This album is a staple on the jukebox when playing in my pool league now, we kick ass when Metallica is on!!!

“Pain monopoly, ritual misery, chop your breakfast on a mirror.”

Suggested Songs: Battery, Master of Puppets, Disposable Heroes

31-Rush-2112(1976)
The title song fucking blew me away the first time I heard it. Still does actually. As much as I love the Temples part and the big finale, it is the softer elements, especially Discovery, that hit home. Alex’s guitar work is some of my favorite on any album. And aside from Twilight Zone, I love every other song on this thing, especially Lessons and Something for Nothing, but as we all know, this one is all about 2112.

“See how it sings like a sad heart and joyously screams out its pain, sounds that build high like a mountain, or notes that fall, gently, like rain”

Suggested Songs:2112, Something for Nothing, A Passage to Bangkok

30-Pink Floyd-Dark Side of the Moon(1973)
The masterpiece. Brilliant from note one to the end. I cannot praise the structure and form of this one enough. It took me a while to get my head into this one, I was a Wall fanboy from day one, and kind of ignored a lot of their other stuff, even though this was the work that got them all the kudos and set the records. Around age twenty, I finally dug into it, and realized why it got the respect, and that respect was well deserved. Every song is killer, but the standouts to me were always Us and Them, and the Brain Damage/Eclipse finale.

“You lock the door, and throw away the key, there’s someone in my head, but its not me.”

Suggested Songs:Time, Us and Them, Brain Damage/Eclipse

You can't go wrong with any of those. Awesome albums, all three of them, though I was always more fond of Ride the Lightning than of Master of Puppets. I love the inclusion of Dark Side of the Moon as well, though it should have been a good 20 spots higher ;) Also, great props for listing Brain Damage / Eclipse as one of your favourite moments, it's mine as well. Countless spins and an amazing album overall.

Time to blow some minds.

I always fought with my friends on how I never liked Metallica.  It wasn't the music, I hated the production of that style of metal at the time.  I hated the dry kick drum sound.

2112 -- made me think that songs could be like a book.....with chapters.

DSOTM  -  Made me pay attention to the little nuances of music.

2112 was always a good one - I remember hanging out with a really good friend of mine from 7th grade choir and she played 2112 and Permanent Waves in a loop.  Good times.  I often wonder what the hell became of her.

DSOTM needs no further words.

Brilliant update!!!!!

Well, never been a huge Metallica fan... I mean it's impossible to avoid listening to them.. they are everywhere.. you have to grow up listening to them... so I've given them way more than a fair chance... They just don't do the trick for me... I find them a bit flat or I don't know... artificial maybe.. well something missing... anyway... I don't want to make enemies  ;D
Having said that, there are at least 10 - 15 songs that I've always liked... couple of which are from this album....

The other two one the other hand.... are two legendary albums....
2112 was the second Rush album I got my hands on.... Oh dear God... my mind was blown away...  From start to finish... every second of it!
With regards to Twilight Zone... It is handsdown my fave off the album... Definitely one of my Top 10 Rush songs!
As a side note.. I've always believed that there's a strange connection, a creepy relationship with this album and myself... I look at my watch, almost every day exactly at 21:12... Also 2112 is the date that is engraved on my wedding ring... although it wasn't the date we got married... I asked then hubby-to-be and he said yes.. he knew he was marrying a weirdo :)

Dark Side of The Moon!!!! Masterpiece!!!! Flawless!!!
Time, Money, The Great Gig in the Sky... incredibly well crafted songs... dat solo of Time!!! Damn!!!...
Pink Floyd had been my all time fave band for years... all during my childhood.... The Wall, Dark Side of The Moon, Animals, and Division Bell... I had sex with those albums.... million times!!!! Don't how to put it another way... to be able to express my fascination over them....
And this particular album is the one that I would turn to when I was really upset in my youth  :p... Put the lights off, curl up on the couch, cry secretly to this album.... My parents didn't like it.. I mean not the album of course.. my mood... they thought I was turning into a weirdo ever single day.... they were right  :xbones

anyways... the thread is on a really nice track chef... we're all having fun... keep it up...

Brilliant update!!!!!

I've always believed that there's a strange connection, a creepy relationship with this album and myself... I look at my watch, almost every day exactly at 21:12... Also 2112 is the date that is engraved on my wedding ring... although it wasn't the date we got married... I asked then hubby-to-be and he said yes.. he knew he was marrying a weirdo :)

anyways... the thread is on a really nice track chef... we're all having fun... keep it up...

Thanks for the insight Nem. Kinda spooky you mention the time thing, I dated this girl a while back that had an obsession with 11:11. Would always point it out to me when it was that time, and chatted incessantly about it. The obsession passed on to me, now I notice it almost every day. :lol

All ready knew about your deep love for Pink Floyd. :)

Thanks for the responses guys, I'm having a blast. You will notice this list getting a bit more focused now as I head into the albums that just plain own me, the ones that painted my soul over and over, and that I will never let go.......

29-Mechanical Poet-Woodland Prattlers/Handmade Essence(2006)
So a bit less than a year back, Nem(obscure) and I started exchanging songs. Her library is much, much larger than mine, so I had to search for new stuff to surprise her with. This was the second best find of all those searches, an absolute magical gem. From a Russian trio, this is the hardest album for me to classify. It has prog, metal, industrial, folk, and a shit ton of other elements. It also has one of the greatest vocal performances I have ever heard, fom Max Samosvat, who left the band after this one debut album. It, and it’s companion Handmade Essence, are labeled as concept albums, but it is more of a whimsical journey around the forest, with Samosvat playing all of the creatures with deep emotion and intensity. It is that rare album that I can close my eyes and visualize the story, stage, setting, and characters perfectly.

“Needless, antiquated, feckless and outdated, I was welcomed like a king, and left as a broken dream.”

Suggested Songs:Old Merry Years Funeral, Stormchild, Handmade Essence, Natural Quaternion

28-The Who-Who’s Next(1971)
Easily their biggest release, Who’s Next I always felt was the pinnacle of what The Who was capable outside of the concept album arena, and even then, this album was the product of Pete’s initial attempts to get the Lifehouse concept down. At the heart of the album are two perennial rock and roll powerhouse songs, Baba O Riley and Won’t Get Fooled Again. These songs are fucking rock staples, period. Behind these two are many other great songs, some of which show Pete really coming into something different and special, the songs tied into the Lifehouse, The Song is Over and Pure and Easy, these to me are simply beautiful tracks. Then there is the haunting Behind Blue Eyes, a killer of a song by any standard.

“Except in one note, pure and easy, playing so free like a breath rippling by”

Suggested Songs:Baba O Riley, Behind Blue Eyes, Won’t get Fooled Again, Bargain

27-Marillion-Misplaced Childhood(1985)
Man did I fall for this one when I first heard it. First heard in my senior year of high school, I think this album can take full credit for putting the death blow to my rebellious metal head phase. I spent the next five years deeply immersed into finding all I could about prog(a hard trick when there was no internet).  As I gathered up their discography, I realized I had found one of their best first. All aspects of the band were maturing brilliantly at this point, they were starting to hit on all cylinders. Fish’s lyrics jumped to a new level on this, way up from previous efforts on Fugazi and Script, his storytelling was finding it’s groove. Just an amazing album, amazing.(fun fact-this is the only album I own on vinyl, found it at a street fair for five bucks and had to get it, now hanging on my wall)

“And it was morning, and I found lots of mourning for a childhood that I thought had disappeared.”

Suggested Songs:Kayleigh, Blind Curve, Childhoods End?, Heart of Lothian

Never heard of Mechanical Poet so now I am on the hunt!

Who's next part of the great 3 albums in a row by The Who.

Missplaced Childhood is a top 20 for me.  Saw them play it live in full backing up Rush on the Power Windows tour.  how's that for a double bill?!!!

Misplaced Childhood: Great album indeed.

As you know, I bought Mechanical Poet sounds unheard purely on your recommendation.  I've only gone back to it a couple of times, but it gets better with every spin.  Might have to listen to it again this afternoon.

Who's Next ... I firmly believe 1971 had the best year of record releases with respect to Classic Rock.  And of course, being born that year doesn't bias my opinion at all.  Fantastic album

Misplaced Childhood... something I only discovered a couple of years ago, and haven't spun it enough to appreciate it that much.  Nothing wrong with it, just that - especially now - prog metal is what tickles my fancy.

This song is told from the perspective of the old year on New Years eve, I think what got me as much as the music was just the brilliantly colored imagery of the whole album, almost unique.

Yeah, the original singer left after that first album, kinda took the vibe of it with them. I haven't listened to that one, but I have Who is Michelle Waters? and Elsydeon, both good, but nothing close to Woodland Prattlers.

Who's Next is the only Who album I ever bought in my life. I got it on cassette in junior high. I think I traded it for AC/DC's If You Want Blood.
It is a classic though.

I have Misplaced Childhood. Bought it within the past year.
I actually still have the 45 of Kayliegh, which I did buy when it came out.
I also prefer Clutching At Straws.

26-Yes-Relayer(1974)
Damn, what an album. Three tracks, all killer. Gates of Delerium has all the elements of a classic Yes epic, an inspiring beginning, a mindblowing instrumental middle, and a soul wrenching finish in Soon. Sound Chasers is a fun, upbeat track, darting in and out and all over the place with whimsy. Then there’s the big one, Awaken, quite possibly my favorite Yes song, it amazes me how much I love this piece. After about ten Yes shows, I finally saw Awaken live, truly a moment of completion for me.

“Like the time I ran away, turned around, and you were standing close to me.”

Suggested Songs: Gates of Delerium, Awaken

25-Dream Theater-Scenes From A Memory(1999)
Some of you might be thinking this is a bit low, but oh well, it’s my list. Musically, this thing is a masterpiece, and one of the best concept album intros I know of. The storyline never really got me though, I like stories I can relate to and get involved in, and this one just didn’t do it for me. The songs on the other hand, holy fuck. It’s pretty hard for me to single one out as not being totally awesome. I was fortunate enough to see this live, and it is a memory that sticks with me forever.

I just can’t help myself, I’m feeling like I’m going out of my head.”

Suggested Songs: c'mon man!!!

24-Pink Floyd-Wish You Were Here(1975)
This album drips of beauty. Though good songs, I could give or take Have a Cigar and Welcome to the Machine, however the title track and Shine on You Crazy Diamond are two of the most beautiful songs ever written. Shine On is jaw dropping both lyrically and musically, one of those songs that stuns me even after hundreds if not thousands of listens, and Wish You Were Here never fails to make the eyes misty.

“Come on you boy child, you winner and loser, come on you miner for truth and delusion and shine.”

Suggested Songs: Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Wish You Were Here

Great albums again: SFAM is my #2 DT album, and WYWH is great as well. Not my favourite PF album but it's up there.

Relayer though has only gotten a few spins from me, it seems like an overwhelming album. But I'll try to listen to it more.

I enjoy those two, but they always came across to me as the grind of the music industry pieces, whereas Shine just presents that dichotomy of insanity and spiritual bliss so well. WYWH, that song goes straight to my soul, even after a bajillion listens. I think its more a matter of the first two being on such a lower level, comparitively, for me at least.

OK, got a day off, let's bust out another update.....

23-Pete Townshend-Empty Glass(1980)
Ok, this will be a long one. First a quote from Pete about what he means by Empty Glass…
"And when I did my first solo album, I called it 'Empty Glass', 'cause of this idea that when you go to the tavern -- which is to God, you know -- and you ask for His love -- He's the bartender, you know -- and He gives you a drink, and what you have to give Him is an empty glass. You know there's no point giving Him your heart if it's full already; there's no point going to God if your heart's full of Doris."

This album I feel is when Pete started empying his glass. It drips with personal emotion and soul, and could perhaps be the most personal album I know of that an artist has written. The majority of it was written during the Who Are You sessions, but the subsequent death of Kieth Moon is all over it, and really gives the album its rawness and emotional edge. The opener, Rough Boys, drips with homoeroticism, and has been interpreted in a million different ways. Following are a few deeply spiritual songs, And I Moved and Let My Love Open the Door, both referencing God from the very religious Pete.  Jools and Jim is his song for Kieth, a frustrated piece at the fact that the world keeps moving, kids keep dropping, even with glowing examples of death like Keith’s. It finishes with two incredible songs, A Little is Enough and Empty Glass, more reflections on spirituality and love. This album is so honest it still scares me.

"My life's a mess, I wait for you to pass, I stand here at the bar I hold an empty glass."

Suggested Songs:Let My Love Open the Door, A Little is Enough, Jools and Jim, Empty Glass

22-IQ- Frequency(2009)
Some of you were probably wondering when I would get to IQ. This is my first installment from the band that I am closest with, the one that really speaks to my soul. To me, even though other IQ albums are more personal, I feel that this is musically their best. All players are hitting on all cylinders, and Peter Nichols is at the top of his game. Though not officially a concept album, it has strong thematic elements like most of IQ’s albums do, and like most IQ albums, they are written loosely enough to be interpreted in many ways. Aside from two soulful songs, One Fatal Mistake and Closer, which both touch me deeply every time I hear them, the rest of the album to me is just killer IQ music, one of my favorite bands peaking.

"Remember all the promises you planned on, the only one who's arms you ever ran from, the best of you was locked away for so long, don't wait another day. Imagine all the mysteries your made of, the great adventures you would love, the wanderlust and all you dared dream of, don't wait another day."  Damn man, right to the heart.

Suggested Songs:Frequency, Province of the King, Closer, Ryker Skies

21- Marillion-Brave(1994)
A girl is found  on a bridge, not talking, just staring out into the water, and is taken into police custody. This real life event inspired Hogarth to write the speculations on why she was there. So begins Brave, a brilliant concept album. It covers different reasons on why she is out there, what she went through to put her in such a desparate situation. From a broken heart(Hard as Love) to abuse(Runaway), many of the scenarios of the disenchanted are covered. Aside from a concept that I absolutly loved, and could relate to in many ways because of shit I’ll spill later in the list, the thing that stood out to me was a level of production that I hadn’t heard before. The nuances, the subtleties, they were brilliant to me. This album taught me to listen very closely, and I have been since. I should note that this is probably also my all time favorite album cover, I absolutely love it.

"See her sadness, in your face, she's inside you and she's crying."

Suggested Songs:Runaway, The Great Escape, Living with the Big Lie, Made Again(yep, I put it up there, love the song, deal with it)

I don't know if I was taken aback. I heard Gates via Yesshows first and was cool with it. When I finally got Relayer, and heard Awaken, I was floored.

It was so different that it's one of those albums that takes multiple listens to really enjoy.

Gates and Sound Chasers took a while, not with Awaken. That's one of those songs that I got from the first listen, hard.

I kid, and I totally hear ya. I've had more than my share of weepy nostalgic moments making this list, looking at where I was in life when the album came out, remembering the good and the bad, and how I used the music at the time to celebrate or console. Then seeing how the same music would change over the twenty years since it came out, only dictated by how I changed as a person. The same song would have a hundred different meanings to me over the years, all dictated by where I was in life. It's a pretty awesome self study to be honest, probably one of the coolest experiences I've had on DTF. Add to it everyone else's own experiences with the same music, showing how different yet still beautiful we all are, just really cool.

And I still have my top 20 to go, next update either tonight or tomorrow, pending on my mood.....

20-Peter Gabriel-Us(1992)
Though I enjoy all the songs on this one, it is on this list for only two, Secret World and Come Talk To Me. Both songs I absolutly adore and are extremely personal to me. If I made a top twenty songs list, these would both be on it. Those two songs are such deep expressions of the base aspects of love, longing, and wanting, and the music behind them is nothing short of spectacular. If everything works out right, when I finally get to see Gabriel live in October, I will have crossed the last artist of my bucket list of bands to see. Though there are plenty that I would like to see, he is the only remaining “must see” on my list.

“Whatever fear invents, I swear it makes no sense, I reach out through the border fence, come down, come talk to me.”

Suggested Songs:Come Talk To Me, Secret World

19-Yes-The Yes Album(1971)
First off, I have a confession to make. When I was introduced to the medium of online forums, I went to Yes’s first. I think that’s all I have to say about what this band means to me. Fortunatly for you guys, Yes Fans are kinda boring when it comes to internetting, so I came here second, and haven’t left since. The Yes Album was to me the breakout for Yes, they settled into the sound that would make them my favorite band, and a band I have seen over ten times, only topped by the Grateful Dead. Yes speaks to me like no other. I listen to music for many reasons, and I have a band for each reason. When I want to feel at one with the world around me, to be reassured that it is a beautiful world if we just open our eyes to see it, I listen to Yes. This one contains four of my favorite tracks, and two songs that have carried me through a huge portion of my life, Your Move/All Good People and Perpetual Change.

“Don’t surround yourself with yourself, move on back two squares”

Suggested Songs: Your Move/All Good People, Perpetual Change, Yours is no Disgrace, Starship Trooper

18-Rush-Moving Pictures(1981)
My introduction to Rush, and an incredible selection of music. I was a lucky kid to have been handed Moving Pictures, Who’s Next, The Yes Album, and others not listed yet at such a young age by my brothers, they steered me in the right direction when it came to music. I fell for this one right away, such a different sound than all the Yes and Who that I had had up to that time. Of course, Tom Sawyer grabbed me, Red Barchetta went straight to my core, but the one that truly owned me was The Camera Eye. Such a phenomonally unique piece of music at that time for me. Love at first listen for sure.

"Race back to the farm, to dream with my uncle at the fireside."

Suggested Songs:Camera Eye, Red Barchetta, Limelight

17-Styx-Grand Illusion(1977)
A psuedo concept album about finding one’s true self in a world of illusion, this one was on constantly. No matter how hokie people think Come Sail Away is, to a ten year old kid just discovering rock and sci fi, it was the coolest song ever, and aside from the Contact-esque theme, it is still a great song. Fooling Yourself(The Angry Young Man) is easily in my top twenty song list, maybe top ten. Countless times I looked to that one for hope and inspiration as a kid, or even for a bit of moral support. It is mainly because of this song that this album is this high.

"You see the world through your cynical eyes, you're a troubled young man I can tell. You got it all in the palm of your hands, but your hands wet with sweat and your head needs a rest and you're fooling yourself if you don't believe it."

Suggested Songs:Fooling Yourself, Come Sail Away,Man in the Wilderness

16-Beyond the Bridge-The Old Man and the Spirit(2012)
I had a ton of trouble trying to figure out where to put this one on the list. It’s a new album, but rarely have I had an album own me so quickly and completely. I found this one the same way I found Mechanical Poet, random searching on spotify. Gave it a listen, and bought it by song two. I was floored. It is such a well thought out album in every aspect, and the two vocal performances are legendary. I then wrote a review for obscure’s zine, and through forcing myself to listen to it a bajillion times for the review, it just grew on me more and more. Though simplistic at first, it is actually one of the most complex and layered storylines that I know of in music, with the music, lyrics, and vocal stylings all coming into play to tell an incredible story of a man defining himself in his dying days. With each spin, more evolves out of the story, a lot of the interpretation reflected by my experiences and feelings of the day, helping me find things in myself to work through the day with. I should note that my second review was of this album, and the reception I got from the guitarist Peter, was a special moment for me. To have my feelings of a work of art validated by the artist himself, truly an awakening moment. The review can be read here (https://www.ladyobscure.com/albums/beyond-the-bridge-the-old-man-and-the-spirit/) (of course, Nem was the one to
see the show front row and interview the band, but I guess that's the benefit of paying the bills, not that I'm jealous or anything ::) )

"My heart is a wanderer, my soul is a ponderer, it's the edge of a knife, and the difference is love."

Suggested Songs:The Call, Triumph of Irreality, The Difference is Human, The Struggle

15-Grateful Dead-Europe ‘72
I struggled with what to do with the Dead on this list. I don’t own many of their studio albums, and don’t have the collection of bootlegs that many Deadheads are famous for. But considering I have seen them over thirty times, I felt they deserved a high spot on the list. This album to me is fitting, it is a collection of favorites performed in the Dead’s preferred atmosphere, the stage. It is also accesible to new Dead fans who are looking to find out what it is all about. Some real classics on this one, and it is the Dead at their best.

"Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world, the heart has it's beaches, it's homeland and thoughts of its own. Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings, but the heart has it's seasons, it's evenings and songs of it's own."

Suggested Songs:Jack Straw, Brown Eyed Woman, Truckin, China Cat Sunflower/I Know You Rider, Sugar Magnolia

Dead ... sorry, not my cup of tea.

Not a cup of tea for many around here, but such a huge part of my life. In my early twenties, I followed my older brothers into working security for Bill Graham Presents, my first show I was put on the front boards, between the front row and the stage, right under Jerry. Never, ever forget that experience. All I had to do was look up, and Jerry was wailing ten feet from me, just awesome.

Beyond the Bridge  :hefdaddy I discovered this album about a week ago and your description fits perfectly. Floored on the first listen. Right now it certainly feels like it has the potential of a top 10 album.

The Dead was one I had on your "no" list anyways, you just might go 14 for 14 with the rest of the list.

I wonder, how long have you lived in SF?!  Since TGD is from there you can't help but love the music and the atmosphere from the SF area.

Since I was seven, but In The Dark came out in '87, and really created a revitalization of the scene, right when I was heading into hippie central USA, the University of California at Berkeley, and my rebellious spirit was ripe for all of it. Never quite became a full on hippie( I showered for example), but I definitely had the vibe going. And there is no experience quite like a Dead show, it was a world unto it's own, plus their music is just that damn good.

Crap, you're right, To Be Over is the third track. Relayer was the last minute addition, I must have gotten confused. I usually listen to the Keys version of the song. Nice catch, way to shoot my credibility to shit.  :lol

I'll leave Relayer there, if only for Gates. Sorry folks about the mental fart.

And not to change the subject :\ , but let's do another update...

14-Dream Theater- Images and Words(1992)
It’s the early nineties, and I am working in a small sports bar kitchen listening to the local rock station, KSEG. A song comes on, and I am immediately sold. I buy the album, and am hooked at how fucking awesome and new it sounds. Twenty years later, I am making a top fifty list for their fan forum, some of the guys reading this weren’t even alive then. So began my love affair with DT, and it just keeps on going.
Nuff said.

"When temptation brings me to my knees, and I lay here drained of strength, show me kindness, show me beauty, show me truth."

Suggested Songs: Nah...

13-IQ- Subterrenea(1997)
IQ’s epic double concept album, and a brilliant piece of music to boot. IQ , and specifically singer Peter Nichols, speak directly to my soul like no other band can. I relate to them on a personal, intimate level that is unparraleled.  They tend to write with enough wiggle room in their concepts and lyrics that they can be applied to many, deeply personal issues, of which I have plenty. The concept behind this one is a guy is raised for his first eighteen years of life in a sensory deprivation chamber, everything is taken care of. Then he is let loose to learn about life and love, and at most times it’s not pretty, but the few beautiful moments are sheer bliss. It closes with a beast of an epic, The Narrow Margin, that features some godlike drumming by Paul Cook. It’s really hard to single songs on this one out because of how closely knit the concept is to it all, just a masterpiece. Speak my Name is in my top five all time songs, so damn beautiful.

"There's a place where all my dreaming, will free me from what I became, and I know no one can reach me, every time you speak my name."

Suggested Songs:The Narrow Margin, Speak My Name, Failsafe, Capricorn, Somewhere in Time

12-Yes-Yessongs(1973)
My love of Yes is born from this one, as was my introduction to music in general. My four older brothers and I would do pretend rock band to this when I was six(I played drums). It truly all started here, and I still spin Yessongs on a very regular basis. As to the music, it is incredible. Yes expands on almost every one of their classic pieces to that date, making them more epic than they allready were. Just great stuff, one of those that make me regret not being a bit older so I could have seen it personally.

Suggested Songs-Close to the Edge, And You And I, Seen All Good People, Yours is no Disgrace, etc, etc, etc......

OK, down to the last eleven. Eleven songs, eleven different bands, these are the big ones. Though a lot of this list was hard to come up with, the top eleven were pretty much no brainers...

I never thought about it. I mean, here on DTF, we all like DT, so it's really no surprise. IRL though, I just like knowing that some kids are capable of escaping the popular music box I guess, don't really run into many young DT fans though.

11-Iron Maiden-Number of the Beast(1982)
The heart and soul of my high school metal days, and the album is solely responsible for my metal side. Everything about me that is metal sprung from here, and it was such a wonderful starting point. Every song is an ass kicker. The bass lines just tear me up, the memorable gutar riffs, Bruce’s beastly singing, hardly a flaw in my mind on this one. I still use this album today as my housecleaning music, just put it on, crank it up, and the house is cleaned by the end. Personal favorite tracks are Hallowed by The Name, Number of the Beast, Run to the Hills, The Prisoner, and Children of the Damned, but that is just splitting hairs, I love the whole thing.

"When you know that your time is close at hand, maybe then you'll begin to understand life down here is just a strange illusion."

Suggested Songs:Hallowed by thy Name, The Prisoner, and Run to the Hills

10-Boston-Boston(1976)
Best debut album ever. Every song is a classic rock radio staple, and deservedly so. Though side one gets all the love with Piece of Mind, More than a Feeling, and Foreplay/Long Time, I would put every other song on this album on a jukebox, and they would probably get recognized and loved. To me, they hit gold here, and though they produced some great stuff after, never hit these heights again. Brad Delps always held a place as one of my favorite singers, just a classic sound. Talk about your first pitch home runs.

"When I'm tired, and thinking cold, I hide in my music, forget the day."

Suggested Songs:More than a Feeling, Long Time, Smokin, Hitch a Ride,Let Me Take You Home Tonight

9-Rush-Signals
I fell in love with this one at first note. Though other Rush albums get more props around here, this was the one for me, such a case of right album at the right time. Being a dissilusioned teen of the suburbs, Subdivisions spoke the right words to my heart at the right time. The imagery in Alalog Kid still leaves me breathless in wonder. There really isn’t a song on this one that I cannot put on right now, that wouldn’t take me back to a certain moment or feeling, it was really close to me, always.

“His mother starts to call him as a hawk goes soaring by, the boy pulls down his baseball cap and covers up his eyes.”

Suggested Songs:Subdivisions, The Analog Kid, New World Man, Countdown

Signals is good, but not top 50 material for me.

TNOTB and Boston... essential for our age group.  Both made my top 50.

Yessongs is a beaut.
Been trying to get in to Subterranea, but it's taking longer than I thought.
I was a couple years late to the I&W party.... it was late '96 for me.

Boston is such an excellent album.  How many albums can you name where EVERY SINGLE SONG is a classic rock radio staple?  This is the only one I can come up with.  Back in the winter, we were out in the garage doing some work and the radio was on.  "Something About You" came on and I was all "Holy shit, I forgot all about this song" and in my mind, I was instantly transported back to when I was a teenager and hearing it for the first time, just floored by the melody and the awesomeness of it all.  It nearly brought a tear to my eye.

Zeppelin IV Is the only other one I can think of off the top of my head.  But it's even more heavily weighted to 'the big three'. Misty Mountan Hop doesn't get much airtime ... Or Battle of Evermore for that matter.

8-The Kinks-One for the Road(1980)
Like the Dead, I had to pay some respects to my other favorite live band. Unlike the Dead however, choosing an album for The Kinks  was a no brainer. This one has had a stronghold in my regular rotation of music my whole life, and it will never leave that spot. It is free, it is rocking, it is fun. I think a lot of people forget that above all else, music is supposed to be fun and entertaining. You put it on, you rock out, simple enough. The Kinks are the essence of this vibe, and this album is it in full display. Even after thirty years, I still put this album on and rock out like a fucking idiot on an almost daily basis. This album is the sole reason why there are live albums on my list, I just couldn't leave it off and still represent my musical life honestly.

Suggested Songs:Catch Me Now I’m Falling, Celluloid Heroes, Twentieth Century Man, Hardway, Superman, Low Budget,Lola, Misfits, etc. So much good shit here.

OK, a little note about the top seven, after no. seven, the top six are pretty much interchangeable. Any one of them could be no. 1 on any given day. I will release one at a time, hopefully finishing up Sunday night.

You know RJ.  Seeing all the old album covers like The Kinks-One for the Road reminds mw of my youth spending hours at a record store with $8.00 in my pocket burning a hole through my pants.  I just loved hanging out at the record stoe.

The one place, my cousin and I would go get him lunch at McDonalds and he's give us each a 45.  That Kinks live album brings back so many memories.

7-Triumph-Allied Forces(1981)
God I love this album. I’m just gonna say that the song Magic Power was the one that made me fall in love with music. It showed  me that music is more than just notes and lyrics, but can also be a buddy, a trusted friend, a shoulder to cry on, a celebratory hug, and a friendly voice on a very lonely night. This song opend up the doors inside for music to enter my soul, and it has never closed. Many other killer songs here too though. Even though Just a Game might have been my first favorite album, the love for this one will never die. Such a great combination of killer songs, inspirational messages, and mindblowing instrumental work. I will never, ever, stop listening to this album.

"Turn it on, turn it up, it's your turn to dream, a little magic power makes it better than it seems. I'm young now, I'm wild now, I want to be free, I got the magic power of the music in me."   Fuck. Yes.

Suggested Songs:Magic Power, Fight the Good Fight,Fool for your Love, Ordinary Man,Allied Forces

Ah, the Beast! Everyone seems to always 'forget' Invaders, though. What a killer album opener! This one also blew the Metal (although I'm sure it was called 'Hardrock' in those days) doors wide open. Six! Six! Six!  :metal

6-Pink Floyd-The Wall(1979)
I don’t feel any description of this album is necessary here, so I won’t bother. What is important is what this album taught me. The Wall showed me to look for the meanings and story in the lyrics. To find how the nuances of the music affected the emotion of the story. How meanings and themes can jump from song to song, and that themes can reoccur from piece to piece. In other words, The Wall taught me how to listen to music in a whole new and wonderful way. Any tools I use to listen to and translate other albums, I learned here.

"Did you ever wonder why we had to run for shelter as the promise of a brave new world unfurled beneath a clear blue sky?"

Suggested Songs: Goodbye Blue Sky, Mother, Comfortably Numb, The Trial

I like the Floyd a hell of a lot but The Wall just doesn't do it for me much since the Gilmourcore is so minimalized/seemingly eliminated altogether. But the reason I was high-fiving Zydar was because of our similarity in that we focus on music and that lyrics are a less important part of it for us. I don't hate lyrics at all but I just find the musical component to be my main draw.

5-The Who-Quadrophenia(1973)
If it wasn’t for Quadrophenia, I wouldn’t have made it through my teens without killing myself or someone else. I had anger, I had sorrow, I had pure hate, this album spoke to them all. To me this is Pete’s magnum opus, his masterpiece, and what an album it is. The story of Jimmy, a disillusioned punk kid who is trying to find his was in life. He is portrayed through four different personalities that all teen boys should be intimatly familiar with, the hopeless romantic, the fighter, the overburdened, and the lunatic. The interplay between the four is nothing short of genius, in that all four are necessary for and feed off of each other. Musically and lyrically, this album is almost perfect. A series of shorter songs set the stage for the finale of Drowned, Dr. Jimmy, Bell Boy, Sea and Sand, and Love Reign O’er Me, one of the best series of songs ever. For those unfamiliar with these, change that now, this is passionate music at it’s best.

"Ill fitting clothes, and I blend with the crowd, feet too clumsy, voice to loud, but I'm one."

"I'm feeling restless, bring another score around, maybe something stronger, could really hold me down."

"No one can love without the grace of some unseen and distant face....when your soul tells you to hide, your very right to die's denied."

"I can't sleep and I lay and I think, the night is hot and black as ink, oh God I need a drink of cool, cool rain."

Suggested Songs:I’m One, The Real Me, Sea and Sand, Dr. Jimmy, Love Reign O’er Me, and the two killer instrumental parts, The Rock and Quadrophenia

Number four will be up tomorrow morning....

4-Dream Theater-Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence(2002)
Ok, side one, the Glass Prison, fucking amazing song, very personal(obviously to those who know me) and the best live opener ever. Blind Faith, outside of the title tract, it is near the top of my list of DT songs. Misunderstood. Wonderful, incredible.  The Great Debate, a musical monster. Now on to side two. When I bought this and saw that it had a 45 minute song, I instantly got prog wood, and it didn't let up for a long time. Seeing it performed live, I just don't even know what to say about that. There is not a single part of SDOIT that I don’t love, and Solitary Shell, words cannot express what that song did for me, and still does for me. So many aspects of my personality are expressed in that song, just incredible.

"Unable to trust in my faith I turned and walked away, I turned around felt a chill in the air, took my will and turned it over."

"And even though I get so high, I know I'll never fly, and when I fall out of the sky, who'll be standing by?

"Hope, in the face of our inhuman distress, helps us to understand the turbulence deep inside, that takes hold of our lives."

Suggested Songs: *sigh*

hhhmmm... no Mindcrime yet?  Still think there might be another DT to come.  Another Rush?  Can't remember if your writeup on Signals said whether it was your fav or not.  Will 1971 or 1972 make another appearance?

Nice pick, RJ. Six Degrees is my favourite DT album as well. Though you forgot to mention Disappear, which is a shame.

Also, I know one of the coming picks, but I won't tell.

Possibly the mother-of-all live albums?

Oh, and you nailed the 'mother-of-all' live albums at the top of your list.  Personally, I'm not much of a fan of it, but it is to live albums, as Tommy is to concept albums - the grand-daddy of them all.

My DT guess was 8vm - for the title track alone.  But if there are no albums left from the 00s, then that's out.

3-Yes-Tales from Topographic Oceans(1973)
While on toru, Jon Anderson was reading the Autobiography of a Yogi, and noticed a footnote that described the four different ways that knowledge and history are passed along generations. These are Revealing, Remembered, Ancient, and Ritual.  Soon, Yes released their four epic song masterpiece, Tales From Topographic Oceans. This is Yes going off the spiritual deep end, and I love it. Many people can’t stand this one, it speaks to me so deeply. I could listen to it a million times and walk away a different person every time, but always a better person. When I go to the mountains camping, I have a specific rock set out in Sawmill Lake. I always plan one evening where I will watch the sunset and listen to the whole thing as the sun colors the granite cliffs of the Sierra Nevadas. It is perfection. Also in this are so many life guides, a main one for me is in Rituals, where Jon speaks of Nous Somme Du Soleil, we are of the sun, we are bright, beautiful, and good. I have to remember that, that parts of me vibrate with parts of everything else, that if I step out of that vibration, I lose myself, which for me is a very dangerous thing. This album is my teacher on how to stay in tune with the world around me. The ending part of Rituals, and the lyrics “nous somme du soleil, we love when we play”, though simplistic, are at the core of my spiritual being and how I try to approach life. We are of the sun, we are good, and we are at are best when in that childlike state of play, with our only expression to others one of innocent love and wanting.

"Youth is the truth that accepting reasons will relive and breathe hope and chase and love for you and you and you."

"Out tender outward lights of you, shine over mountains makes the view, the strength of you seeing lies with you."

"As one with the knowledge and magic of the source, atuned to the majesty of music, we marched as one with Earth."

"Hold me my love, hold me today, call me around, travel we say wander we choose love tune, lay upon me hold me around lasting hours, we love when we play. We hear the sounds, and alter our returning, we drift the shadows, and course our way back home, flying home, going home." I thing that it says so much that just typing these lyrics moves me. :heart

Suggested Songs:All four, but Rituals and The Remembering are a bit more friendly and accesable.

Album number two tomorrow morning, and I'll finish up either tomorrow night or Monday morning.....

Tales is in my Top 5 albums too. Yes really transcended what it was to be a rock band. The ebb and flow of the songs plus all the repeating musical themes woven throughout = brilliance.

I always felt that Tales isn't an album you listen to, but something you experience by submitting completely to the music. That's how I listen to it every time, no distractions, no nothing, just me and the music.

2-IQ-Ever
This is the album where IQ came of age, and also where I forged the deepest emotional connection to music I would ever have. After the first two releases, both great but still a bit rough, especially with Nichols’ vocals, Peter took a break from the band to do a solo project, Naidem’s Ghost. With a new singer, IQ put out two good albums, though a lot more pop than prog in nature. Nichols returned for Ever, and they put out a beast. The band matured and tightened their prog sound, and Nichols’ voice came into it’s full maturity, deep with emotional power. This is easily one of the rawest, most emotional  works of art I have ever listened too. The imagery of Nichols lyrics evoke  pain, lost memories, and forgotten youths. No punches are pulled, it is pure emotion. This stands out most in Darkest Hour and Leap of Faith, two brutal soul wrenching songs. When I got this album in my early twenties, I was hard into a very bad drug habit and suicidal depression. I had a part of me that was locked away and very alone, Ever spoke directly to that part of me, and gave color and flavor to the emotions burning inside. I could name them, and begin to identify with them, the first step in a long healing process. It was easily the most intense musical moment of my life, those months of spinning nothing but this album, my hidden insides finding comfort in a voice that understood. I have had tons of problems since then, and many depressions, but the thought of taking my own life never crossed my mind again. I literally owe this album my life.

“In spite of everything I recognize the end, and feel the scars that never heal, I keep the purity buried as I am, in an effort to conceal.”

“Gathering comforting remains, I was unprepared, running scared, faltering, and why do I hold on? It’s gone, I know.”

“Go wherever you can be, and live for the day, it’s only wear and tear. Doesn’t matter any more, if I’m losing you, your always everywhere. It’s no wonder I’m afraid of making amends, and shattering the fear, now it’s happening I know, so dark inside of here. What have they done? Stay with me. Can you say where you are? I’ll be there, I’ll do it, just tell me I’ll never let go.”

“Holding faster than before, for what it’s worth now, those days that none will see replaced. What became of us, mysterious and ageless, we left without a trace. Far away, we say goodbye, too many unremembered arms that won’t let go.”
Honestly, I could quote the entire album.

Suggested Songs:Darkest Hour, Leap of Faith, Further Away/Came Down

Number one will be up tonight or tomorrow morning.....

Ladies and gentlemen, the no.1 album of my life.........................................

1-Marillion-Clutching at Straws(1987)
As I said before,  the top 6 are pretty much interchangeable. These are the six albums that are at the core of my musical heart. I put this one at no. 1 because it has been such a huge part of my life as of late, in fact I have been using it as one of my primary recovery tools. Marillion was on its way to breakup as this one was produced, and a lot of that raw emotion shows in it. It is easily the best product musically of the Fish era, the bands musical maturity was at its peak, and all songs are flawless to the ears. Thematically, it is simply the best structured album I know of. With the exception of White Russian, the concept is strong and clear throughout the work, the concept being the main character, Torch, is a 29 year old unemployed man whose life is in shambles. He is an alcoholic and drug addict, and the songs in this album represent his lamentings on his life from his drunken state. It is important to remember that these songs are supposed to be from the veiwpoint of a drunken alcoholic(and probably were knowing Fish’s lifestyle at the time). This is the view of a man breaking and broken, his brief manic forays into hope before everything crashes yet again. Lyrically, this is easily the most incredible piece I have ever heard. Fish, one of the best in the game to begin with when it comes to lyrics, is in his prime element here, and it shows.  The opening songs could have been me any night in my late twenties, up till the sunrise, drinking and doing lines, just running and running, not caring who I trampled in the process, this is also touched in the manic tract Incommunicado, the false sense of heroism and bravado that only a drunken rage can give, clutching at that top spot because it never last. The thing Fish hits best though is the despair and despondancy, shown well in the tracks Going Under, Torch Song, and most of all Sugarmice(my no.1 song of all time, OF ALL TIME!!!!). These are the mental ramblings of a man ready to stop but he can’t, a man trapped in the cycle of the disease, I know it because I lived there for twenty years, and Fish nails it spot on. I use this album to help me focus on those feelings, and their source in my past, as I work in my recovery. If I want to focus on that place I lived in, to find out how better to stay out of it, I listen to this album. Clutching at Straws is why music was made for me, it explains all the reasons why I love music.

“Frantic as a cardiograph, scratching out the lines, a fever of confession, a catalog of crime.”

“And the sunlight flares, through a curtains tear, shuffling its beams as if in nervous anticipation of another day.”

“If it’s a matter of money, I’ll buy a round for that boy over there, my companion in the madness, in the mirror, the one with the silvery hair”

“It’s too late I’ve found it’s too far, I’m of two minds and both of them are out of it at the bar.”

“If you want my address, it’s number one at the end of the bar, where I sit with the broken angels, clutching at straws and nursing our scars, blame it on me, you can blame it on me, my sugarmice in the rain.”

Suggested Songs:Hotel Hobbies/Warm Wet Circles/That Time of the Night, Slainte Mhath, Sugarmice, The Last Straw

Thank you for being a part of this, it has been a blast. I will make an honorable mentions post sometime tomorrow.

I'll have to give this one a listen sometime. A while back I asked folks in the Marillion thread which album to start off with and they suggested some double album which didn't quite take. I guess as soon as I get through listening to Nigel Pepper Cock I'll start this one off.

I sincerely commend you on your timely running of this thing too. Well done indeed

Last thing, when you finish listening to this album do you feel like a Marillion bucks?

Oh, and seriously, great album lonestar. I listened to it for the first time when you mentioned it during your Misplaced Childhood entry (I had only heard Sugar Mice before that) and during this brief time, this album has grown on me a lot. Not quite in my Top 50, but if it keeps it's ascent, then it surely will be by the time I make my list.

Also, huge, huge props on your timely handling of this thing. Many peeps could learn a thing or two from you.  :tup

So Clutching at Straws was my first, in real time CD from Marillion.  A fantastic choice RJ.  Well done!

Lonestar, thank you for doing this. I don't usually follow these top 50 lists, but I really enjoying following this one. Cool to see Styx and The Who represented well. Never got much in to Pete’s solo stuff, probably overdue. Checked out IQ, who was new to me, and liked what I heard.

Still really don’t like Marillion. But otherwise :tup

Yeah this is the Top 50 list I've been the most interested in so far.

Thanks for doing this :tup

A while back I asked folks in the Marillion thread which album to start off with and they suggested some double album which didn't quite take.

That would be MarblesClutching at Straws is my favorite Marillion album as well.  Their early stuff with Fish was more rocking, if you don't like Marbles or Clutching at Straws, then it's pretty safe to say Marillion isn't your type of band.

Great list Lonestar! Lots of superb stuff as I expected and I really appreciate the insight as to how you relate to each. That is definitely one of the most important aspects of music... our relation to the music... that's when it's really special, when it attaches itself to our lives.  :tup

Great job with your list, lonestar.  I was off the grid most of last week, actually recording demos for The ANABASIS II, so I missed some of it, but enjoyed reviewing it just now.  Well done, sir!  :tup

And you won't have to.......

Making up a top 50 was hard enough, but with all these people making honorable mention list, I felt I had to give props to those who play their own special part in making the music whisper and shout….

-To the Dad who had a moment of softness, and decided to not tell his teen son to “turn that crap down!!!” that one time, just happened to be the time the son heard the song that lit the fire to a passion that would burn for the rest of his life. It was that one sliver of time that made the difference for so many.

-To the high school garage bands, playing for nothing, practicing on a tireless schedule, fueled only by desire and a hunger for something greater. Some might make it, some will hold on to the passion in their own special way, some will fade into the obscure pools of humanity, never to create music again.

-To the bar bands that will never see the big stage, never see a record deal, never see all the luxuries of the rockstar life. Those who bust ass at work all day to pay the bills, then head to a seedy dive and rock out till the wee hours of the morning, all for a measly 300 buck, even though there’s enough talent between two guitarist and a drummer on a five piece that they can cover Lights Out by UFO perfectly.(I’ve seen this happen, fucking amazing) They do it for love, simply for love.

-To the bands who endlessly write and rehearse original material, expressing all the wants, hungers, and desires inside them, even though a paycheck is never to come. To lay your soul down without reward for others to contemplate is the greatest of vulnerabilities.

-To the strung out musician, his brilliance only outdone by his troubled soul. He has taken his last slam of dope, he will be dead soon. He literally gave his life to the business, only to be trashed in the papers in the morning.

-To the backbones of the business, working tirelessly to make sure that the music is just right, the lights are shining, and the stage sturdy.

-To the frustrated, the joyous, the sad, the angry, the lost, the reborn, the alone, the loved, the satiated, the hungry, the beaten, the wanting, the peaceful, the searching, to all of those who had a feeling, and needed a song to live it through, and to live through it.

-To the fans everywhere, for music needs a soul to satisfy, and the love of it needs to be shared.

It’s to all of these people, and so many more, that I would like to honor here, the ones who lived and breathed the music in every fashion. I have touched on what music means to me all over this list. When I was stuck in that insane childhood, the insanity stopped when the music played, and even today, if I want to stop the insanity, I always have my way out. The love of music, I feel, is the most intimate thing a person can have, it cannot be bred or grown. To tell someone what music to like is the most futile gesture of all, and to say a band sucks is a meaningless statement. That band that you may think sucks is bound to be the very thing that breathes life into another. Each of our souls ring to a different vibration, a different frequency, no two are alike. The multitudes of musical artist exist to satisfy these myriad vibrations and frequencies, and there are areas in our souls that can cross paths with others. Think of your favorite song, play it in your head, feel the bliss brought about by this simple act. Now imagine someone you care about, one whose soul is in tune with that same wonderful song  that brought that bliss to you. There lie the two of you, eyes closed, souls floating on the gossamer winds of sound, together.  Such times are the most intimate connections born of, moments when we know we have found someone who at some level lives, feels, and loves as we do. Lifelong friendships have been made out of this very simple union of souls. I have made a few myself, within this forum and out in the world. Such is the power of music. I am honored to have been able to give you guys a deeper look into the sounds and frequencies of my soul, the ones that have carried me through all the joys and sorrows of my life, and each and every one of you too are honorable mentions on this list. You help make the music happen in my life.

"We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of the dream."-Arthur O'Shaughnessy

Thank you, lonestar  :heart

Thanks, Lonestar. I recognise a lot in that piece, to say that I've 'slaved' for 10 years in a band writing original songs and having that burning fire within wanting to perform them, rehearse them until my fingers bled (I was a 'drummer' then), waiting for an opportunity to record them well, (only to see those recordings fucked up by others) only to be able to say one day 'yes, that's our cd, those are our songs, my lyrics, our melodies' and then seeing what you lived for for 10 years dying onder your hands is indeed heartbreaking. I recognise so much of what you say. And it's hard to step away from that all and to say, 'yes, but it's only music, right?' there are far more important things in the world'. Well, I have found that music helped me through very hard times, found it does have a healing power and I will always be thankful I can draw on that resource when I feel I need it. Thank you Chef, for your eloquate words of wisdom. I salute you.

Fun lonestar fact- The quote by Arthur O'Shaughnessey, "We are the music makers...." was my original sig on DTF. I of course first heard the line from the Gene Wilder version of Willie Wonka. :D

Surprised it took that long actually. Considering I got the next nine days off though, maybe I can come up with a good list though. Lord knows there are a shit ton of albums that deserve recognition.
