You might wanna post that stuff shortly. I have some idea of what you're into, but until I know what's banned and what you're after, I don't know how much I can really send you that you might care for.
Ok, since I'm a n00b at giving one when should I post my rules, tastes, and banned list?I'd probably get the banned list going and if you're making a post about tastes, that too. You never know how many are on the fence until that information is available.
Basically. I mean, when I go into a roulette, I don't necessarily go in to dominate. I'm mainly there to throw some songs at someone, and if I send even one song that spurs them to check out an album, I'm happy. You might wanna post that stuff shortly. I have some idea of what you're into, but until I know what's banned and what you're after, I don't know how much I can really send you that you might care for.
So you aren't sure yet? ;)
ROCK: Today’s rock just seems somewhat stagnant, as from what I’ve heard there isn’t a lot that has changed in the last decade or so, which is probably why I’m not as into it as I once was. However, I still do enjoy it, and haven’t heard anything new in a while,
i'll join because splent begged me to even though i don't have a lot to offer him :tupAre you sending weird metal, or harsh noise first?
also the banned list might help dunno
I can't get the banned list to open. Any chance to copy/paste in the thread?

Well, I'm immensely relieved that "Rock" was the biggest paragraph.
I got nothing or virtually nothing for the other genres.
Read the tastes post... so, uh, what's your view on metal?
Can we send for round 1 yet, or do you want us to hold off on that until you close registration?
If there's a spot left I'll join. Think I'd do well here...

Hold off for now plz
If there's a spot left I'll join. Think I'd do well here...
You think you'd do well anywhere! ;D
have sacul judge the qualifier round
In your own interest, it would probably be better to give the themes in advance. That way, everyone can plan their best songs for each round, and no one has to send something mediocre for a themed round because they already used their perfect song for the themed round.

i made the mistake of not announcing themes in advance and nobody ended up happy
It's about half open and half themed.I knew there will be open rounds, I just said themed and open is better than just open rounds.
Hey Spencer... would it be viable to ask (if you tracked it) for you to stack rank the songs you just got as Mr. Red? I could go through 45 pages, but I'd rather not - it be great if we all could see, other than Dave just having that advantage.

All of them? You need to give me time.
jingle boy: Alpha Rev - Phoenix Burn
I did enjoy this song. It was light and upbeat. However, to me, it was nothing special. It sounded like a typical feel good mainstream rock song. Nothing wrong with that, but it was very formulaic to me. That being said, I enjoyed the feel of it and always made me smile when it came on. I'd be interested to hear more of what this band has to offer, because I don't expect every song to sound like this.
Evermind: David Gilmour - Faces of Stone
I'm a bad bad Pink Floyd fan. I haven't heard much of Gilmour's solo stuff. This makes me want to hear more. That part in the middle where the chord structure changes feels like it could have been plucked out of Dark Side of the Moon. Love it. Plus the lyrical content is very deep as was explained in your description. I feel that Gilmour put the emotion out there perfectly. Well done.
Lonestar: Structural Disorder - Corpse Candles
This song grew on me a bit from the first listen. Initially I thought "man this song drags on". On every listen after that I noticed something new. Was that an accordion in the instrumental interlude? That was creative, and it worked! The growls in the chorus worked perfectly. I did think that the song dragged on by the end, especially when it repeated the same riff like 8 times at the end, but overall enjoyable.
senecadawg2: Max Richter - Dona Nobis Pacem 2
Why is this song so short? I feel that "Dona Nobis Pacem" is perfect as a title... and several images come to mind when I hear this. Is it someone pleading for peace? Is someone dying and when the music abruptly ends they die? Is someone crying out because someone died? The emotional buildup just tugs at the heartstrings. I need more!!
Nekov: Hammock - Tonight We Burn Like Stars That Never Die
It's repetitive, but it works amazingly well. I love the ethereal sound that this song has, because it does feel like bright starlight shining down. It reminds me of something like M83 meets Sigur Ros or something.
wolfking: Nightingale - Forevermore
My favorite song of the round. Love this. It wasn't over the top, I LOVE the keyboard arpeggios (when I play keyboard in the air during a song you know it's a good thing). It changed subtly throughout the piece. The singer was not over the top, but worked perfectly here. The guitarist played cleanly and not wanky. I'm definitely looking into this band once I'm done writing this. I hope to hear more of the same!
Scorpion: Amorphis - Sampo
I dug this, especially the beginning and the end. I'm not a huge fan of growls, but the interlude in the middle worked pretty well. I just felt like it was cut and paste ABA form, like there wasn't any transition between the sections of the music. I'd be interested to see more of what Amorphis has to offer though, because the clean vocal sections I really enjoyed.
Parama: East of the Wall - Whiskey Sipper/Underachiever
You called it. I am not a fan. In fact, after my first listen I was like what did I just hear? If I were to give a score immediately after that it would have been a 1 or 1.5. I made it a 2 because after several listens Whiskey Sipper turned out to be ok. Not something I would go out of my way to hear, but it was tolerable. The mix sucked though. I could barely hear the vocals until he started screaming. And then Underachiever sounded like they just played whatever while he screamed at the top of this lungs. No, I know they were playing some pretty intense complex music, I could tell... but to me why scream when only the bassist is playing? Not my style.
Sacul: Riverside - Driven to Destruction
That down low wall of sound that this song presents at the beginning and then builds up as the piece goes on I really enjoyed. Plus it's in 7 which doesn't hurt. It did feel like one solo after another (guitar solo, keys solo, a little vox, another guitar solo, a little vox, another keys solo, etc), but I know a lot of bands do that, so it doesn't hurt, it just felt like a dragged on a little bit. Another band I need to check out.
lonestar - Kingcrow - On the Barren Ground
I do like the heaviness of this song. It's dark, complex, murky, without unnecessary growls for effect (I've heard plenty of songs with that). It drives, it moves, and I really like the ending and how it maintains the thematic material while it fades out. That being said, in my opinion there's nothing that really makes it stand out. It sounds like a prototypical prog-metal song. It's not that I don't enjoy it, because I do, but there's nothing that made me really go "WHOA that was amazing". Nothing huge in the guitar solo, the vox are good but not amazing.
seneca - Glen Hansard - Bird of Sorrow
I was like who is this when I saw this, but then I realized it was the guy from Once. I haven't seen it, but I enjoyed that oscar winning song. With David Gray as your avatar it's not surprising at all that you enjoy this. When it first came on I was like "man this is slow... will it pick up?" I'm very picky about my ballads, and if they just drag on I won't enjoy them. This had all the emotion to go along with it, especially as it moved to the end. That cry... very very good. I have to be in the mood to really enjoy this song though. Again, it sounds a little prototypical as far as singer/songwriter ballads tend to be, especially in the last decade or so, which is why I didn't rate it higher, but hey, it's my opinion. I did enjoy it, though.
Nekov - Dream the Electric Sleep - Listen to Me
That intro though... LOVE that. Unfortunately, I was expecting some huge boom when the rest of the instruments kicked in, and instead I had a banjo/mandolin. It works, but it wasn't what I expected. It eventually got there though. MAN I enjoy this singer. He's great. Very versatile yet maintaining a purity. The song builds gradually through to the end while maintaining a guitar riff that repeats throughout the entire song. I enjoyed this a lot more every time I listened to it, it really did grow on me. It got a little repetititve at the end, but it never dragged and left me looking at my phone wondering when it was going to end. I was like whoa it's over?
Wolfking - Pagan's Mind - Intermission
I did enjoy this, but again as with other songs, it was prototypical power metal to me. I could have very well been listening to Sonata Arctica or Angra. Nothing really stood out and gave me a wow moment. And in my opinion it didn't really go anywhere. I would enjoy it if it were on a power metal playlist, and I hadn't listened to power metal in a while so it was nice the first time I heard it, but it never really grew on me as much as others.
Evermind - Absolute Priority - Fear of the Night
I can see what you meant by the Maiden influences (I can sense a little bit of a Metallica influence as well). I LOVE the piano in the beginning before the boom of the intro leading up to the vocals. The way the sound builds up throughout. You can tell the inner struggle that the protagonist (antagonist?) is facing as the song progresses. Very well done.
jingle.boy - Headspace - Soldier
So simple, yet for some reason this song clicked with me. This song was awesome. Just the piano and the bell chime throughout the whole song with this haunting vocal... I mean, as I listened and looked at the lyrics... this could very well be happening today. Three verses as the soldier lives his life... first fighting in the war, the inner struggles as he grows older, and the desire to be by his comrades in death. My brother in law fought in Iraq and I can see that brotherhood he has with his Army buddies. He's been through hell and back, and even though this song isnt' loud, it doesn't have to be to drive it's point home. I'd be interested to hear the rest of this album, especially if it's a concept album.
Sacul - Blue Sky Black Death - The Era When We Sang
I did enjoy this a lot. I love how electronic music uses samples and subtle additions and subtractions to move the song along, and this song does this... it repeats essential thematic material, yet never gets old. It builds up and then fades away.
Parama - The Hirsch Effekt - Athesie
Better than your last one for sure. When I saw it was German I didn't know what to expect... some heavy industrial metal or what? But a prog metal song. I enjoyed the subtle keyboard effects that countered with the drums/guitar. I also liked when the ending approached it switched from a 4/4 time signature to a 3/4 time signature and drove it home. Good job.
Scorpion - Heart of Cygnus - The Mountain King
I remember hearing this band on this forum years ago when they were first getting starting and really liking them but never getting past the "wow they're good I better check them out". I should have. This is excellent conceptual symphonic prog. It tells a story, I LOVE the cello at the beginning.
My Inner War - Myrath
I loved the beginning of this song. It reminded me a lot of DT or LTE without the heaviness of 2000s-era DT. I LOVED the tempo shift, which again reminded me of DT, but Images/Awake era. Overall this track is SOLID. I love the natural piano without the overindulgence placed on wankey synth solos (I prefer natural piano), and the singer fit the mold very well. How have I not heard this band before now? I love it. Great submission.
The Line Between - Baroness
The beginning of the song reminds me of an 80s era fantasy movie like Legend or Labyrinth… then the low chugga chugga of the guitar came in. This turned into a fun alt-rock song reminiscent of late 90s Foo Fighters or similar bands (like what rock was before Creed and Nickelback ruined it for the next decade). There’s nothing extremely memorable that sticks out of this track, but I enjoyed it immensely.
Farm on the Freeway - Jethro Tull
I never really got into Tull, except for their big hits (Thick as a Brick and Aqualung), so this was a pleasant submission. Obviously 80s Tull? Again, I enjoyed this quite a bit, although it seemed to drag on near the end. Ian Anderson is a beast. Only he could fit a flute into a rock song and make it work. And it works very well. I’m interested in hearing more Tull.
Green Waves - Beardfish
Beardfish is one of those bands that I intended on getting into and never did (that list is VERY long)... I think I’ve heard a few tracks by them in recent memory but don’t remember what they sounded like. Again, with this one, nothing that really stands out or makes me be like WOW. I do like that wall of sound that leads into the very well done instrumental section near the end. It just seemed to drag on a little bit too long. Again, I would like to hear more before I base judgement on the band as a whole.
Iron Hands - Mandroid Echostar
This sounds like it was taken out of the 80s… I think they are trying to sound like Coheed and Cambria. Nothing extremely memorable here. It’s LOUD. It’s not a bad thing, but it doesn’t go anywhere because of it, at least in my opinion. Again, I’d give them another chance. There’s a lot of potential here to find something this band does that I enjoy a little more.
Bat Out of Hell - Meat Loaf
I had heard this song before but it had been ages… most of the time when you are at a bar you hear Paradise by the Dashboard Light and that song just seems to go on and on and on… as Wagnerian Rock tends to do… but this song, while almost at epic length, doesn’t feel that way. It’s fun, it moves, and Meat Loaf can SAAANG.
Being Human - Bent Knee
This song is completely different from anything that was submitted so far, and I really enjoy it! Very subtle, avant garde, jazzy, you never know what’s going to happen. This really surprised me, and it grew on me. I loved it.
King of Errors - Evergrey
Another power prog metal song with a driving hook… It almost sounds like it was taken out of the 80s again with those synth sounds that drive behind the amped up guitars and drums. I don’t mind that at all, but it just seemed to stay on there all the time and not go anywhere. It wasn’t bad at all, I enjoyed it, but not as much as others in this round.
Pure Reason Revolution - Bullitts Dominae
I loved the introduction. It was subtle, mysterious, laid back, not bombastic. And then those vocal harmonies. The chorus comes in and you hear a higher voice and it all interweaves within itself, making it more mysterious and emotional (like those emotions interweaving within each other within oneself)... Then at the end you hear that major chord within everything else… like the person is at peace with his inner turmoil… Very well done.
senecadawg2 Ludovico Einaudi - Divenire
Holy crap. This is absolutely beautiful. I loved every single moment of it. It reminded me of "A Kaleidoscope of Mathematics" by James Horner from the movie A Beautiful Mind, that same type of buildup and intensity and beauty with the piano as the forefront accent. My favorite piece of the entire roulette so far.
Scorpion Fanticide - My Regret
This piece really had some promise, I enjoyed it, I loved the singer... the mysteriousness and foreboding nature of the entire piece really grabbed me... then about halfway through I heard these harsh vocals going back and forth with the singer and I'm like wtf... the harsh vocals were BAD.... they didn't sound good at all... I'm not a fan of harsh vocals anyway, but if they are used correctly I'll tolerate them... this sounded like someone dying. The rest of the piece was good, but I couldn't get past that. Maybe I'm being too anal. I don't know.
wolfking Fates Warning - Monument
This piece was puzzling to me. It wasn't particularly bad, it just felt dated... hard to put exactly what I mean here... like I couldn't tell if they were trying to sound like today or 1987. Like I said, it wasn't bad at all, I did like it. What's with the random last 30 seconds of music that sounded like MIDI music on the computer? Again that sounded really out of place...
jingle.boy Dec Burke - Promised
I did like this piece overall. Nothing really stood out, but I really like the buildup, the guitar solo, and the background synths throughout the entire piece. The vocals fit perfectly.
Sacul Alter Bridge - Blackbird
Another piece that I enjoyed but didn't really have anything that stood out to me that made it particularly memorable. That said, I really enjoyed it a lot and wish that more rock sounded like this. All the elements of the piece fit together really well. I loved the mix of the rhythm guitar with the melodic guitar as the piece went on as well as the intensity of the vocalist... the last guitar solo was subtly fitting.
Nekov Lights & Motion - Drift
Oooooo another piece that I really really enjoyed. The simplicity and repetative nature of it, yet elements quietly kept being added to it to pique my interest. Again, this sounded like something I would have heard in the climax of a movie. I really enjoyed it.
Evermind Roger Waters - It's a Miracle
I'm going to be honest and say I listened to the studio version a few times before I read "It's the live version" just because the links don't work on my phone when they are posted in my email, so I just search and add it. I was going to originally rate this 3/5 but I enjoy the live version a LOT better than the studio version. It seems more... intimate. I think Waters sound better here too.
wolfking: Pyramaze - Back for More
I REALLY enjoyed this one. Great symphonic/power metal sound. I really enjoyed the vocalist especially... it fits the sound of the band really well and didn't sound affected (sometimes you get that with this kind of sound, which kind of turns me off). The keyboards in the pre-chorus are very enjoyable. I LOVED the instrumental section as well. Formwise it's a little formulaic, but it kept my interest. Overall a great song, and if the rest of their repertoire sounds like this I will listen to more of this band.
jingle.boy: Flaming Row - Rage of Dispair
Sorry jingle. The harsh vocals were a BIG turn off for me. I loved the intro (and whenever that 3/3/2 pattern returned), but then the scream vocals came in and I was cringing. I liked the female vocalist a lot though, and harsh vocals aside, I would probably enjoy this song a lot more. The instrumental section was also very amped up, and I enjoyed the prominent bass line leading into a clean guitar solo, reminiscent of early DT. But this screaming instead of singing thing has never been for me. I had a feeling you would be expecting this.
Nekov: Faunts - Feel.Love.Thinking.Of
This is something that I could listen to late at night to wind down. This type of synth-heavy song is really starting to become popular, which I don't mind. It's not my favorite synthy song, but it definitely works. I'm glad it was on the short side though because it's so soothing I probably would have fallen asleep :lol
Evermind: Avantasia - Savior in the Clockwork
My favorite song of the round. Love the buildup at the beginning, and then BOOM BOOM BOOM... this had me from the very beginning. Loved every moment of this. How did I not know about this band? The instrumental section was great, the vocalist was great, I loved the choral background vocals... this had everything that I love about prog metal in it. Bravo.
Sacul: Lord Huron - Ends of the Earth
This song is a bit hipster, but it isn't bad. It's different enough that it kept me going, and it calmed me down. It reminded me of a band I used to listen to a lot in early high school though. It just felt a little repetitive as it got towards the end. There was an air to this song at the very beginning that made it sound like I should have been on some tropical island or something. Unique.
Scorpion: Beyond the Bridge - Doorway to Salvation
At the beginning, I was like "What is this The Mirror sped up"? Then the female vocalist came on and I was like "Nope!" Interesting that she sang that entire phrase acapella. For some reason this song didn't grab me like the other prog-metal songs in this round... I don't know why... I enjoyed the vocals the most of this; maybe it's because without that I would never know what direction the song was going. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't my favorite.
senecadawg: James Blake - Retrograde
This type of soul music is becoming very popular right now with artists like Adele and Sam Smith. I do enjoy it quite a bit, and this was no exception. The piece focuses on the vocals and the words with a very simple and minimalistic beat. However, the simple synths kind of seemed overpronounced and when they were evolving and out of tune with each other I was like Ugh... although whenever they resolved out of that it fit a lot better.
jingle.boy Anubis - Blood is Thicker than Common Sense
This song was a grower. It seemed a little simple at first, but as I listened more I began to like it a little bit more. The middle section with the call and response tended to drag a little bit because they did it so much and didn't change it all that much, which for an 8 minute song just got monotonous. But I enjoyed the chorus quite a bit and the groovy riffs the band played.
senecadawg2 Leprous - The Price
What a unique voice. That was the defining factor in this song. It wasn't too bad, it just didn't grab me as much. Kind of had a Coheed sound to it in my opinion.
wolfking Solution .45 - Winning Where Losing is All
Sorry Wolfking, you know how I feel about harsh vocals, so that def brought the score down. However, the music, the chorus, the guitar solo towards the end... those were all absolutely phenomenal; harsh vocals are the reason I have never gotten into bands like BTBAM, they just ruin the entire song for me. However, it didn't bring it down as much as others because I really enjoyed the non-harsh parts of this song a LOT. Like, if I could splice out those harsh vox I'd be down totally.
Sacul DJ Shadow - Stem/Long Stem
My favorite of the round. You picked a good one to send. I like some EDM and this is the kind I appreciate. It's repetative, but every repetitition is just different enough that it's interesting; especially as it builds up. Some of the samples/breaks are a little questionable in my opinion; while they do add to the song i just feel like they break the groove. However, they aren't too debilitating. The beginning... i felt like I was listening to Queensryche or something and then expected it to just go crazy but it never did. That was fine by me.
Nekov Dragon - Sunburst
Oh yes. Old school prog that I haven't heard of. Calming, not too crazy. I wish I knew more of this stuff... I may have to look more into this band. Reminds me a little bit of early Yes or Genesis.
Scorpion Arcane - Unturning
My favorite heavy one of the round. Kept my interest the entire time.
Evermind Mark Knopfler ft. Ruth Moody - Wherever I Go
What a calming song; I am not surprised that it was you who sent it. Unlike anything that's been sent yet. Sometimes this kind of stuff is a little too schmultzy for me but this was good.
Mazzy Star - Fade Into You
Not going to lie, but this song takes me back. I have heard this song before (but didn't realize this was one I've heard until I started listening), but I never heard the full song. It is used in one of my favorite movies of my adolescence, in a very pivotal scene, but only part of a verse and a chorus. So when I hear this song I think of this scene. The rest of the song is very similar to the rest, so it's pretty repetitive, but that was the case in early to mid 90s alternative rock. The whole song had a very calming effect overall that I really enjoyed. Well done.
Nordic Giants - Rapture
I'm not really sure how to classify this song genre-wise... it starts synthy and almost ambient, but then BOOM this wall of sound comes with the vocals. I really enjoyed that part. There is a lot happening at once. Even though the song repeats that WE RISE part many times, it still manages to build up towards the end. I really enjoyed this.
Amadeus Awad - Lonesome Clown
This song was pretty much the only metal-like song in the whole round. It was enjoyable, but not my favorite. The vocalist's voice does fit the song, but the nasal quality of her voice did wear on me after a bit. The instrumental section in the middle didn't really go anywhere and went on and on... it probably could have been cut in half. Where this song really shone was the last third of the song with the acoustic guitar when she sings about forgiveness... that was my favorite section of the song. Overall decent, but not my favorite.
Saltillo - Giving In
This trip-hoppy sound is really good. The vocalist reminds me of Dolores O'Riordan from The Cranberries which fits like a puzzle piece in this type of song. Hard to believe this song was released about a decade after the height of popularity of this type of song. This was excellent. Well done.
Diablo Swing Orchestra - Voodoo Mon Amour
What is this!?! Metal swing!? This is pretty creative. While it's not my favorite it's damn fun to listen to. The vocals are quirky which is perfect for this type of song. In this genre style this song has it all - the fun vocals, great horn section, and driving beat. It's not my favorite genre of music, but I would love to dive into a bit more of this.
Evermind: Galahad - Empires Never Last
A very good prog metal song, I love the drive the song has from the get go. I'm trying to put my finger on who the vocalist reminds me of, but I can't think of it. It's driving me nuts. The instrumentation is very good and it has a solid instrumental section with a very good guitar solo.
The song doesn't drag at all, but it sure takes a long time to build up from the intro to the thematic material that grows into the first verse. Almost 2 minutes of intro material, and then the verse/intro... No vocals until almost 3 minutes in. It works, but to be honest with all that filler material my mind did start to wander. The chorus is GREAT and almost makes up for that. Because that stuck with me the song isn't as low as I'd rate it if there was nothing that was particularly memorable.
Nekov: Papadosio - Direction Song
The vocals at the beginning of this song remind me of a song dear to my heart (I will not divulge because it would give me away). I love the use of synthesizers.
This song has a chill vibe to it that I can imagine myself listening to driving home after a party on a Saturday night through the city. It has that vibe. I love that vibe. That chill, smooth, almost jazzy sound is maintained throughout the entire piece. Still, there wasn't anything super memorable about this track that stood out for me... I mean the song is called Direction Song, he even sings "Give me some direction" and it's like someone was like "OK, go that way" and it's a stretch of highway that doesn't have anything interesting on it. Still, it's got a very good beat and works exactly for what it is.
Sacul: Alt-J - Taro
This song is very... interesting. Again, it has this chill vibe to it... The vocals are very unique (not my cup of tea stylistically, but works in the song), the lyrics are very unique... this song is very unique. Not surprised you submitted this, dude.
That mandolin though... I like the use of it in the chorus.
However, this song made me want to go to sleep. It was almost TOO chill. I don't know. Again, nothing too special here in my opinion. I did enjoy it, but didn't stand out to me.
Scorpion: Rishloo - Downhill
There was a lot I enjoyed in this song; the vocalist was great, the guitar sound used was good... I really enjoyed the 2nd half of the song. But after I heard it several times I still couldn't remember anything specific that I had listened to. That's not good. The song was just...there. You know? I mean there's elements I enjoy in the process of listening to it but there's nothing that I can say "OH I LOVED THIS PART". I would be willing to listen to this band a bit more but this song just seemed weak compared to the potential I heard. I don't know.
Senecadawg2: David Gray - Shine (Live)
Shocking that you'd send a David Gray song.
Gotta be honest, I've never heard this song, but I do own White Ladder so I can't say I'm completely unfamiliar with his music. Babylon is my jam. But this song just is David Gray. I love it. It's full of emotion amongst simplicity. That's the mark of a GREAT singer/songwriter. The fact that it's basically 2 chords throughout the entire song but lyrics wise and vocal wise you can still build up to a very emotional climax at the end just shows not only what kind of songwriter he is but what kind of performer he is. Good song.
senecadawg2 Neil Young - Like a Hurricane
I do not mind Neil Young (I'm not really familiar with his solo stuff other than his huge hits), but I wasn't a huge fan of this song. I think the rating would be higher if the song was shorter... it just seemed bloated. I do understand that was his style, I do appreciate the guitar solos, but they seemed to go on forever and then the song just dragged on and on... I was waiting for him to come back and sing but nope, 2 more minutes of guitar solo. That's too much monotony in my opinion. Sorry dude.
Nekov Von Hertzen Brothers - Bring out the snakes
This was fun. I loved the jazz influences in the guitars (I was like whoa) when I heard that, it was a great, fun song... But the FADE OUT! I literally screamed NOOOOO when I heard it the first time. Total cop out. I wish they found a better way to end it. Is this part of a larget concept album? I'd be interested in checking it out. The lyrics sounded like it was part of a story...
Evermind Fish - Cliche
The song's title actually fits... this is a little Cliche. Yes, I do enjoy Fish-era Marillion, but this sounds like Marillion without the Marillion... you know what I mean? Still, I rather enjoyed it. It was emotive, I love the mix, I love the fake-ending (I love you... pause... DRUM DRUM DRUM KEY CHANGE)... That's so Marillion Fish era ballad. So it's all good. It was a solid song, but not my top one this round.
Sacul David Bowie - Lazarus
I can't lie, I heard this once before, but I literally only listened to it once, right after he died and everyone was like LISTEN TO THIS BECAUSE MAN THE REFERENCES ARE JUST WOW. And yeah, they are. I know Bowie's music fairly well, but mainly his 70s and 80s stuff, not much in the last 2 decades. This song was POWERFUL man. Wow. It hearkens to Queen's "The Show Must Go On" in the fact you know Bowie knew that his time was short and so he just put EVERYTHING in this, in his own style of mystery and mixing of many different genres. This was awesome. Bravo.
Scorpion Distorted Harmony - Misguided
I did enjoy this, it was complex, it was fun. Unfortunately, it was one of those songs that even after a few listens I can't really grasp anything that stood out to me. It was solid, it has grown on me, and eventually may have something to it, but even after 4-5 listens I can't think of anything specific that stands out. I love the crispness of the guitars and the fact that everything was so complex and so tight though.
Do not fret, all shall be revealed in due time.
The Appleseed Cast - Great Lake Derelict
This is an interesting blend of many different genres of music. I think it is unique and adds to how much I like it. It almost has that indie pop/rock sound that is popular at the moment in mainstream music but yet maintains an underground feel to it due to it's complexity. It still has a driving beat, but the piece is so intricately played (especially in the drums) that it almost has a prog feel to it even though (subjectively speaking) it doesn't have that feel to it, at least not this piece. The piece slowly builds up a crescendo to the end to it's climax as well, so the song doesn't stay in one place, even though it is a little repetitive in some of the thematic material in the instrumentation. Overall very good, I enjoyed it quite a bit.
Blind Guardian - Wheel of Time
Yes, I haven't heard hardly any Blind Guardian. Can you believe it? It's true. This probably is a huge clue that plays into figuring out who I am. Anyway, I want to hear more after hearing this. This is solid symphonic metal. What really draws me in is that it isn't "Symphonic"... meaning that it's played by actual instruments. Sometimes "Symphonic" metal has classical themes but all the instruments are played on the synthesizer and I feel that's a cop out. This was very well done. The vocalist is SOLID. His voice fits PERFECTLY within the music, and I love the choral sound behind him as the chorus built up, especially in the recapitulation at the end. Very well done, I hope to hear more from this band in the future.
Florence + The Machine - Seven Devils
I know who F&TM are but don't know enough of their music to warrant banning them... I have liked what I heard (except when they sing live on SNL), and this isn't an exception. This is again well done. I love the mysterious sound that the song puts forth with the vocalist kind of holding back to reveal almost a more mysterious vocal line leading into the chorus, and then the ethereal, mystical sound the chorus puts forth is well done. I do want to hear more of their music, but I have heard a couple of songs they've done that I've liked more, and the song does tend to get a little repetitive at the end (not so much where it's dragging, but enough where I feel it). Still a very solid song.
Know who I am yet? ;)
Nekov: Subsignal - The Size Of Light On Earth
I really liked the introduction a lot. That ethereal keyboard sound is one that I LOVE and wish was used more. The tight vocal harmonies are also ones that I enjoy, reminiscent of bands like Queen. I do agree with 425 and Tyrias, while I enjoyed it a lot, it was pleasant, nothing really stood out. It was a solid prog-rock song, but nothing made it make me go WHOA. It was also very repetitive, and nothing was really added to the repetitive nature that made it any more interesting than the first time I heard the keyboard phrase at the beginning of the song. I don't want to be like it sucked though, because it was far from it. It was very good. Just nothing that made it stand out.
Evermind: Joan Baez - Diamonds and Rust
I know a little bit of Joan Baez's music, but not very much. I do really like folk music from the 60s and 70s, and this didn't disappoint at all. This piece was beautiful, emotional, simple, yet complex... I loved it. Folk music sometimes tends to get repetitive, but that can be overshadowed by emotional content and make repetitiveness seem shorter, and this does this perfectly. The synth strings and light organ adds to the emotional content perfectly; almost capturing a light rock/jazz quality that was quite common at the time but fails to be captured in today's singer/songwriter music... I compare some of this to other songs I enjoy from that era, such as Killing Me Softly by Roberta Flack. What a beautiful song.
Sacul: Kashiwa Daisuke - Stella
I'm not writing a poem like Tyrias. So don't expect it.
This piece surprised me. I was thinking within the first two glitchy minutes "DANG IT WHY DIDN'T I JUST SEND SACUL STOCKHAUSEN DURING HIS ROULETTE I WOULD HAVE GOTTEN 5's" but then the glitches stopped and the music began. This music is like a lake or ocean. It comes in waves. Some of it I really enjoyed, some of it I was like does this really need to go on for 3 minutes? Like the extreme minimalistic (and I wouldn't even call it that) piano parts. Yes, it adds to the mystery of the piece, but hearing hte same 4 notes within the course of about 20 seconds without any added ambience can drag on. When that ambience is added layer by layer it starts to pick up and get interesting. And when it's in full throttle the piece really flows. What I REALLY enjoyed was the classical nature the piece incorporated; the cellos are really effective and emotive, and the clarinet was a nice contrast. I also enjoyed when even though the piece got repetitive, the piece stayed interesting because a new instrument would be added above it. I was pleasantly surprised. It was good. It didn't blow me away overall, but I enjoyed it. I would rather it be broken up into movements or something though.
Hey Spencer... would it be viable to ask (if you tracked it) for you to stack rank the songs you just got as Mr. Red? I could go through 45 pages, but I'd rather not - it be great if we all could see, other than Dave just having that advantage. The OP of the championship has links to every single results post and scores, I'm sure you could have figured it out.
I'm following, but I think I'll sit this one out.
Less than 2 minutes long songs? This is rough. :lol
I know exactly what I'm sending for that round though.
Less than 2 minutes long songs? This is rough. :lolYeah, no idea what I'm going to send for that. The 1960-1970 round will probably hurt me if I make it that far.
Send link to first song from Spotify on Facebook IM.

Just to be clear, these decade-spanning themes, they are two decades each? So round 2 is anything from 2000-2019 and round 8 1960-1979?
I also, really randomly, like the band Anal C**t

Yes. These are decade spanning. I do know quite a bit from the 70s to the 90s, but there's always something new I haven't heard yet, as I heard through the championship roulette.

Bonuses:
Not going to lie, I liked Bolster’s idea here, so I stole it and adapted it. I’m not going to do the obscure color star (sorry, no chartreuse, cerulean, or puce stars), they are just going to be bonuses.
60s round ought to also be fun for some. And by "fun" I mean "pretty fucking rough". :lol Hope I make it that far.No kidding, I think I have to pay a visit to a local old folks home and sift through some LP's or something if I make it that far :lol Literally got nothing for that, good thing I have a good collection of sub 2 min songs though because this one's going to affect all 16 participants.
THEMES:Was this by any chance inspired by the thread I made a wee while ago?
Round 4: Short songs (less than 2 minutes)
That band is a riot. HITLER WAS A SENSITIVE MAN
I also, really randomly, like the band Anal C**t
I especially like "Tomislav90". Hopefully these five years have wizened him and now he's going to kick some ass in this roulette. :lolI already feel older and wiser :D
Oh, can we send live versions of songs?
On the time-period rounds: Are live versions of songs that originally came out during the time period okay, even if the live version itself came out afterwards? (assuming no drastic changes to the song in the live version, the original song just has shit production :lol)
How do the bonuses work?

I’m not going to do the obscure color star (sorry, no chartreuse, cerulean, or puce stars), they are just going to be bonuses. You are allowed up to three bonuses in the roulette. Each bonus will get you one extra point. However, after all rounds are played, I will rank the bonus songs and give the top bonus song in each category one extra point. This may be important to those facing elimination.

You mean like if you were to send Rush's Working Man from Rush in Rio even though the original came out in 1974? Hmmmm... I have to think about that.
7 submissions so far.

Hey Spence... I'm now "following" you on Spotify. Follow me back, that way you're in my friends list and I can share tunes with you directly there - since I don't think we're FB friendz. Dunno why, to tell you the truth?

So who decides if they are bonus songs?
Hey, Worlds isn't on the banned list. I submit Worlds and automatically win. Thank you for playing :)

Followed back and friend requested you.
Ok, more clarification on the "bonus point" - we're a slow group that rode the short bus as kids.
Does EVERY themed submission get a bonus point, and then the BEST of them gets an ADDITIONAL bonus point at the end? Or is it just ONE bonus point for the BEST one period? I think it's the latter (because by the end, one/more/all bonus points could be going to eliminated players), but just want to be sure.
I'm thinking this should be pretty interesting. The track choices are so wide open, and the players are quite varied in tastes.

I was thinking the same thing.
i'll just wait for my coal star tbh
i have a vague idea of what to send for the epic round and it's going to be a huge disaster but i'm just really curious to see a reaction :corn
i won't make it to the epic round, though, so
actually i'm planning on sending one of the epics from the batch of albums i just ordered a few days ago, i have to actually listen to them all and pick my favorite first though :neverusethis:i have a vague idea of what to send for the epic round and it's going to be a huge disaster but i'm just really curious to see a reaction :corn

@ those planing their Epics and EPs already ... you sure are getting ahead of yourselves.
Have you ever heard Verdi's Requiem? :neverusethis:
I'm actually performing that next Wednesday. Haven't had any other music in my head for about a week :lol
I'll send something (else) soon. Probably tomorrow.
What's funny is I had a lot of obvious holes in my banned list as well, but nobody bothered to fill most of those until the EP round.

Does the epic round have a minimum song length, and if so what is it?
Just waiting on one more to send then I can get started!!

Have you sampled any yet or holding off to hear them all at once?

The third one is 'Untouchable Part 1' by Anathema.
it's kinda silly to not let people guess the entire song then if the pace of the game is going to be so slow :P

I sent chamber pop, actually
I'm not very interested in sending dtf faves if someone else is gonna do it anyways, gives me more rounds to send less known stuff
WTF is chamber pop?

(or part 2, but it would be more logical to send part 1, since it's a better track)
You're welcome :D

________a_ - __a__This one is mine :P
I like how I'm still Tomislav90 :corn
Well since you skipped my letter......
Yeah, the participants in this one are so varied that there's no way in hell I'm gonna get many of them.
But otherwise, this is a great way to do the slow-roll reveal. Great idea Spence!
Oh, and I can see Wishbone Ash - The King Will Come.lol, crap, there goes one of the few artists i had ready for the pre-80's round :lol
one of those looks like it could be Nightwish, except there's one too many spaces between i and t so maybe not

I think it is... Ghost Love Score seems to fit.
Or maybe it's because I was cranking that on the way home, damn Floor took that one and made it her bitch.
:yarr, the letter that is
Why not, it could be Portishead right? Between Julia Holter and NightwishYeah. When I checked I thought there were 4 underscores before the T.
We all know there won't be a single R in there."R" will surely allow someone to solve mine.
Maybe I missed the post, but when can we expect results? :P
It looks like someone sent a cover of Tomorrow Never Knows too.
so results tonight right :neverusethis:
Maybe I missed the post, but when can we expect results? :P
I've had my songs for one day and I have 16 of them. You need to be patient. :P
Well, I think it took about 5 days before we got the final results of the championship roulette in round 10. There were 3 songs to judge there, now there are 16. So 5*(16/3)=26.5 days until we get results for this one. Don't get too excited already, people ;).
Threshold - Clear?Ulver - Tomorrow Never Knows. Damn, I had some songs from that album reserved >:(
Ulver - Tomorrow Never ....? (thought it would be "ends" but that's not possible)
Apparently 2 people decided on Portishead, interesting.
Letters Guessed: A T Z E I N M H R
Someone (Evermind) sent Jon Lord, but I don't know the songs well enough.
And below the Ulver track... I don't know the band, but the song is Feet Channel.

If Ulver is filling the big gap, Theocracy, Wishbone Ash and Threshold are too.Well, from the proggy/fogey side of DTF, I'd agree on those. On the side that leans more towards experimental/challenging/pretentious stuff, I think Ulver is a must here, and they're pretty well known on the site.

This is a strange roulette to participate in. I only know maybe half of the participants and I don't even recognize half of the bands in the first round. :lol
I'm assuming these though:
Evermind-Jon Lord
Hath-T of P
Lonestar-VFTF
J Boy-Nightwish
King-Jon Butler Trio...of maybe I'm thinking John Butcher Axis..

Exactly what I would expect from you.
Nice light intro and then BAM.Potentially mine?
I like this old school sound.
Or Haken, 1985 is very old school sounding.I like this old school sound.
Wishbone Ash
Oh OK. Never heard it, but if it sounds like 1985, that isn't as old school as Wishbone Ash.
Oh, and just so we're clear... I use the 'sacul/parama' moniker in complete jest and fun - no harm or insult intended in any way at all.

I actually wanted them Quiet World copies just so I could leave one of them to listen to when I'm bored, and send a video of how I throw the rest of them into the fire to ToN.Yea, don't bother. I usually just check best rated songs and/or some I might like after reading writeups.
And splent, if I'm the only one non-spotify user, don't bother, I'm not going to find every single song in the playlist on YouTube and then play it. I've got a lot in my plate listening-wise anyway.
So how many listens will all get songs receive in the end? Just 3? Seems too little for 16 tracks :P

That is the description of TAC. :lol
Mysterious vocals are the clincher for me.One of these if probably mine, I bet it's the second one :P

The calm laid back sound sometimes can be overplayed in today's music, but it works very effectively here.

Or was this the closing credits song to a movie?
Great songs Scorp and Tyrias :tup
Btw, are all of these bands banned now? :P
Any chance you'll disclose which bonus point the songs earned, because if you're giving Ghost Love Score the string/symphony bonus, then you've opened the door to 'synthetic' strings, because that was not a real orchestra.... despite the fact that it's a god-tier song.

Yes I will do that. I'll post that this afternoon. I'll tell you now that Ghost Love Score received the strings bonus, and I looked it up. It is by the London Symphony Orchestra. Even though it's live, they use the actual orchestral recording (and I can tell, those french horns are legit), so I accepted that.

Ok... I gotchya. I knew he used LSO for the last album, but didn't know he programmed them for the tour where all the good GLS recordings come from. I just figured because Tuomas is playing all that orchestral stuff on his keyboards, that it's sampled stuff. Well, I'll never know what's real and what's not then (except in the case of live concerts with real orchestras - eg, Score), so I'm gonna struggle to hit that bonus category. Might just go with the funky time signature, because even though I don't know what the exact time signature is, I can sure tell when it gets all wonky.
@ 425... should've sent Argentina. I like that version better.
Also, check out T.O.P. from Tower Of Power. That is an amazing album.
If I want bonus points I need to say it when sending song or? Sorry, I'm little lost :D
Maybe someone could send a sucky song so Splent can appease the masses with a score of 4.
Wait for round 4 :P
I've just been browsing my songs to find short song and I found something I'm sure no one will send and I'm pretty confident about it. Short and sweet.Wait for round 4 :P
I know. I've been looking at my list. I have quite a few but they are mostly just average songs.
:lolWhat bands are you seeing?
I sent a band that I've sent before but I have never seen anyone else talk about them. I sent round 3 all ready as well. I'm heading to a progressive rock festival tomorrow.
One question for further rounds: Do you mind spoken vocal parts?
Can I send a 2:12 min song for that round? :P
Can I send a 2:12 min song for that round? :P

Is 2:12 "less than 2 minutes"?
Well, in the rules post you said about songs' lenghts "I'll give and take 30 seconds or so...", and because there's no reference to whether it applies to all rounds or not, I'm asking :P
absolutely positive I requested the bonus point for my submission tho

Iron Maiden - When the Wild Wind Blows, booyah! is that you 425? Great submission.
Someone sent Iron Maiden? Wow!
I dare you to spell it! :lol
I dare you to spell it! :lol
I suck at this.
I was very close to sending Susanne Sundfor this round.
H
Oh yeah, of course, sorry.I was very close to sending Susanne Sundfor this round.
H
You aren't eligible yet
I should start cockblocking people... Will definitely do so in the next round :P
I suck at this.
How did I not spot Kamelot.
I give up.
You're talking about Oceansize being too DTF popular to the person who just sent Nightwish and Iron Maiden in the opening two rounds of the roulette. Does not compute. :lol
especially since my daughter was born.
I was the same when I did mine. I wish I could see the look on people's faces after I admitted to never having heard Shine On You Crazy Diamond :lolYou're talking about Oceansize being too DTF popular to the person who just sent Nightwish and Iron Maiden in the opening two rounds of the roulette. Does not compute. :lol
Like I said before, these aren't bands I've never heard of, I just haven't listened to them very much or at all
especially since my daughter was born.
I was the same way... from the time I got married to the time when jingle.kids became a little self-sufficient ('99-'05) I did virtually no musical discovery. Hell, I even lost track of DT for a few years.

I kind of lost track of DT a bit myself during the 6 D's/TOT years. My kids were babies then.

Yep. I have to admit, I less familiar with Mangini era DT than the rest. I've only been able to listen to the Astonishing once.
I should start cockblocking people... Will definitely do so in the next round :P
Methinks I have nothing to worry about. :lolI suck at this.
:hifive:
Except, I got one.
Kamelot - Abandoned. Great song, on a 5* album, that's for sure.

I disagree, I think Isle of Avalon is easily the best on TFF.To be honest, I'm not big fan of TTF but I'll revisit it before survivor.
WtWWB is really really good too, though.
This Day and Age - More of a Climb, Less of a Walk
(Last word 'wait' must be wrong here )
one of the song names is obvious Not On Your Life but i dunno the artist
If you guys are mad about the speed of this roulette, remember: a) these first 4 rounds have 16 songs, give me some time; as the roulette progresses and people are eliminated there will be fewer songs to listen to so it shouldn't take so long to get listens in and writeups out to you. And even then, b) round 4 shouldn't take very long at all.
Bulshit - Ale For Your Life?
Probably not. :lol
Train of Naught informs me the last is Gunship - Fly for Your Life.
This Day and Age - More of a Climb, Less of a Walk
(Last word 'wait' must be wrong here )
Yes. That's how it works. It goes both ways. If you use your bonuses now, you'll be at an advantage now, but if you send what you KNOW are strong songs, you may be a couple of points behind now, but then you can whip those out later and catch up during what you think would be a weaker round.
All the songs are guessed, so hangman is over.
How many Amazing Race contestants finished last with an express pass in their pocket?
You guys watch that show?? Do your wives make you? ;D
This song has absolutely everything I love about music in one place.
Makes me feel all warm and tingly inside.
Solid balls to the wall metal.
Borderline almost too harsh for me.
The mood of the song doesn't fit the title.
This song has absolutely everything I love about music in one place.I'd like to think it's the first one, but it probably is the other.
This song moves from prog to metal to jazz... where next?

Big Hath - Thank You Scientist-Suspicious Waveforms 10/10+1=11/10
Oh. My. God. You have shown me the light. This song was FUN. Absolutely perfect. It has everything I love about music in one place. Rock, Jazz, Prog… It’s jazz fusion meets prog rock. Absoultely amazing. And Parama thinks it’s the weakest song on the album!? I need to hear the rest of it. I probably will as I wait for submissions. Thank you. Seriously. I mean it. There’s not enough good fusion around right now. I started to listen to the rest of the album and am impressed. This band is awesome and I hope they go on tour soon (and for cheap because I really can’t afford it right now).
Not as badly as I am.
That song is a masterpiece, people just suck. :\

Wasn't it him that also said Cassandra Complex was the worst song on the album??
So, is two minutes a hard limit? I have a song of 02:07 and 02:04 I'm considering sending.
Not as badly as I am.

My wife enjoyed it.
I'm glad that she did, but couldn't she have also scored it? :P
And that's how you scored on it, since I have no wife :P
When I do my roulette, I'm going to have a wife so she can be my back-up scorer

and then the site crashed for a few minutes
no luck, i already tried multiple times before too not just once
I managed to find something for the two minute round that I actually have some confidence in.
For round 3 I sent the Hey Arnold! theme song. :metalThe fuck? So did I!
Damn, we're starting to get predictable in all the roulettes, maybe it's time to retire :neverusethis:For round 3 I sent the Hey Arnold! theme song. :metalThe fuck? So did I!
I sent a song over two minutes.
The fuck? So did I!
Everyone is talking about short songs so just to remind you: round 3 is open round :lol
I was thinking the same thing. I dunno why this is so hard... I know that I've got a big library and all (:eyebrows:), but I have 790 songs between 20 secs and 2 mins. Even after I picked out songs that would be decent enough to stand on their own (segue tracks or not), I had over 20 dozen to chose from.Apparently I have 983 between 20 seconds and 2 minutes. But when I went looking I set a minimum of 1:30 as I didn't want to send something too short. Although I started with the 2:00 stuff and ended up finding something exactly that which I think might go over well, so I didn't have to look all that hard in the end. :loser:

No. Actually, never checked them even though I said I will in your top 50 thread. My will probably be the one 1:50 long. Pretty cool and beautiful track, hope host will share my sentiments :P
Karnivool - The Medicine Wears Off
It was one of three songs in my library that are exactly 1:50 long, that's all :lolTwo for me, the Karnivool one and Dawn Patrol :rollin Tomislav are you sending Dawn Patrol?
Man you guys are all sending epic length short songs. I was hoping for a 10 second masterpiece :lolWell, if someone sends You Suffer you'll have a 3 second masterpiece. It won't be me though :lol
BTW Dave you need to resend, I don't know if you noticed.I hadn't, thanks for letting me know. I'll send a replacement shortly. :tup

God dammit.
I'll resend.
Is the third Dave Matthews Band? Don't know the song.
______ __ _____ - ____ ___ _____ ___ ____ is mine.
U
The last one looks suspiciously like Steven Wilson - The Raven That Refused to Sing, but the third word apparently has three letters so not sure. And "h" not revealed in "The". Scratch that.it's The Raven Who Refused To Sing, the secret alt version where all the vocals are replaced with raven sounds
Shooting Star - Dunno The Song Title To This OneLast Chance, most likely.
Shooting Star - Dunno The Song Title To This One
O.
The Gentle Storm - Endless Sea (Storm Version)
Also, how was Steven Wilson not banned!? :O
The Gentle Storm - Endless Sea (Storm Version)
Oh!! The Raven is a perfect song!It is
I think everyone but me likes Gentle versions more :/The Gentle Storm - Endless Sea (Storm Version)
Right, I didn't think the title would include the full "storm version" bit. I enjoy Gentle Version much more anyway.

I don't even know what anyone is talking about in this thread! :lol

How about... Shooting Star - Last Chance is awesome!
Inspired by recent roulettes, I’ve made a point in the past week or two of sampling a huge array of the bands whose names I constantly see mentioned on dtf that I’ve never tried because my focus had veered into other places, as I felt I’ve become so out of touch with a lot of the discussion on here.
My conclusion generally was that if I ever did a roulette, it would be the most unpopular roulette in dtf history. People would lose their minds at the scores I would give some sacred cows.

Maybe I should just try out Lechuga before I ever run a roulette again.I wouldn't be dissapointed if Anneke sang a capella version of a phonebook :lol
Oh, and I found The Gentle Storm to be quite disappointing live, even though I probably should like it. It might not have helped that I hadn't heard the album before.
Fluffy, I would definitely give you wacky shit. Do a roulette, please.Probably this, I'd just send weird shit :lol
Maybe I've been too spoilt with Anneke already then. She's everywhere. There's never enough Anneke :heart
that coheed and cambria song is pretty great
The more melodic and happy the better.
Do you want to share any specifics? I'll admit, this has me interested. :PWell, looking through my history, I revisited post-Catch 33 Meshuggah, Mastodon, Gojira, BTBAM, Haken, Protest the Hero, Devin Townsend, Threshold, Thrice, and The Dear Hunter. Checked out Ihsahn, Seventh Wonder, Enslaved, Leprous, Thank You Scientist, The Sword, Amorphis, The Ocean, Solstafir, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Cloudkicker, Tesseract, Headspace, David Maxim Micic, Carnivool, Animals as Leaders, Redemption, Closure in Moscow, and Thy Catafalque.
That might be the best strategy, actually.Fluffy, I would definitely give you wacky shit. Do a roulette, please.Probably this, I'd just send weird shit :lol
Dire Straits - Your Latest Trick
Nice choice. It's interesting Splent never heard it, it is pretty popular song, especially because of that saxophone melody.Dire Straits - Your Latest Trick
:tup
I hope some people planned to send this band in 80s round.
yeah and i can't, so :corn
evermind wants the D :neverusethis:
literally my worst post on dtf tbh
Oh Whoa Is Me, of course. Great tune! :tup

Yeah, don't worry. It's end of the school year.
Yeah, don't worry. It's end of the school year. Here school starts around March and ends on December, with a Winter break in the middle. So when people from the US tell me they start college in September or similar I'm like wtf :lol
He's a music teacher and his school's finals are right now. It's about him, not us.

Well your Winter is really warm right? Ours goes from end of Aug/beginning of Sept to end of May/beginning of June. June-August are our hottest months. We also have a Winter break of 2 weeks nad a Spring break around Easter for 1 week.

Yeah, that's what I would call "really warm".
What's Celsius?
What's Celsius?Sounds like a latin powermetal band to me
What's Celsius?
What's Celsius?
Real science ballers know it's all about Kelvin.
And the really old school ones throw about Rankine just to fuck with the younglings.
And just fuck Rømer.

Stoked, just found my <two minute song. Hey splentage, is it cool if I fire it off to you now? I'm taking off for NY Friday for my kid's graduation and will be busier than a one armed wallpaper hanger between now and then.

At first I was like why should I give you the bonus point, and then I'm like oh.One of these? Though it could be a lot of the more general statements too.
The title matches the music.
An interesting track that blends genre lines.
I think the "Hauntingly beautiful" one is the only proper tidbit for The Raven

The chorus has a jazzy vibe I enjoy
A really nice track, but it doesn't really stand out to me.
I'd drop out of the roulette if that was true :lolI think the "Hauntingly beautiful" one is the only proper tidbit for The Raven
Or "a really nice track, but it doesn't really stand out for me."
"Very laid back. Almost too laid back" could be mine I guess. There's no such thing as too laid back if we're talking about Dire Straits though.
Don't like the sounds of those tidbits.
There wasn't really a standout track in this round. There were some solid submissions, but nothing that made me go WOW.Surprised my submission isn't a standout, actually.
Surprised my submission isn't a standout, actually.

So did my song count as brass or as instrumental? Need to know for next round.
splent's scoring is really generous if 7/10 is "pretty meh" and "quite monotonous" though :lol

Parama- round 4 song
This song is way too meh
0.5/10
Next round tidbits:
This song is too short
I like this but it feels like its going nowhere
Cant help but feel this would be better in the context of the album
This one is also on the short side
Just when I thought it was going to begin the song was over, meh
Alright, that wasn't quite the reception I was hoping for, but it seems like it's enough to keep me on pace to survive...
I've got all sorts of different comments for that Guro von Germeten song. I mostly describe it as "sailorsong meets Pop, with some Jazz thrown in". Somr people said it was Tango-esque, some couldn't quite place it, some agreed with me. You're the first to call it "musical", though. I honestly can't quite see where you come from, but then I don't listen to musicals at all.
You should check out the album though, it's really diverse and each aong sounds just a bit unique.
And I'll send im a few.
Maybe I’ll eat my words after this round though. And there you have it.
instrumental, the majority of that song was either in 3 or 4
You should have sent some Fire! Orchestra :neverusethis:Maybe I’ll eat my words after this round though. And there you have it.
if i'm to be honest, i find this round's theme incredibly frustrating, because very, very few songs can feel complete in a mere 2 minutes. the two songs i've found that i'd send because they're complete enough would both likely not do very well at all as they're both too intense for poor lil splent :lol

Still waiting on Chad and Sacul. It is possible that I accidentally deleted your PMs if you deleted, since I just cleaned out Round 3 submission PMs, and that's on me. If it slipped your mind, I would like the submission within the next 24 hours if possible. Thanks!
feels pretty elite imo:clap:
I sent Converge - Concubine.
Just to make it clear, I didn't send it. But I wonder what score would it get in this roulette... :DI sent Converge - Concubine.
That song would get a high score in my roulette.
I wonder if anybody tried to send what I sent? It was pretty much the first thing that I thought of for this round, and it's a pretty well known DTF band.I think I know what you're talking about and I'd be surprised if noone sent that song. Initally, I was thinking about sending it but I decided to go with something else.
We'll see.

It's still fucking impressive you got it :lolFuture of the Left - Things to Say to Friendly Policeman

Tiebreaker is the most fun for sure.I'm also sure I'm either eliminated or one of two with same points facing elimination :lol
Who am I kidding I'm already eliminated
Well, if they have different bonus point values I'd just eliminate the one that has less bonus points, since that means he sent you better songs overall and you might get something better from him going on.

Well, I wouldn't mind that. If it ends up being me on the edge, the only one who sent less bonuses than me is king, and he seems to be pretty consistent.
Wow, I am sucking on this.
Wow, I am sucking on this.
Wow, I am sucking on this.
Oh yeah, given one chance to impress, I'd definitely reach for Brothers In Arms if Dire Straits wasn't banned.
Bolsters: Pandora’s Box - The Opening of the Box 9.5/10The rest of the album isn't anything like this, but you may like a lot from it anyway. The song I usually send people from this album is It Just Won't Quit, and it is somewhat more representative.
THIS Is how to open up an album. This was great. It was crazy, chaotic, and AN ACTUAL ORCHESTRA. I am genuinely interested in hearing the rest of this album after hearing this.
Oh yeah, given one chance to impress, I'd definitely reach for Brothers In Arms if Dire Straits wasn't banned.IN MY HEART :heart
Instead I went for something that Train really liked. Sent just now.
I see I got 8 but is it really 8 or 7+1?
Yeah, same. And if you really did forget this could get interesting :cornI see I got 8 but is it really 8 or 7+1?
I'm asking myself this two. I actually asked for this to be counted toward the instrumental bonus, is that already incorporated or did you just forget?
Yeah, I like how 'hit and miss, but this one was a miss' still results in a 7.5I can imagine my own roulette having too high scores. I wouldn't have heart to rate anyone badly. But if I ever do one (I doubt it) I'll have measures to stop myself from giving too high scores. Don't know if someone ever did it that way but basically it is combination of rating and ranking system. Point from 0-10 with 0.5 scores between and two people can't get same score in a round.
Yeah, I like how 'hit and miss, but this one was a miss' still results in a 7.5That's far too generous imo :lol

Yeah, 'not bad but couldn't get into it' sounds more like 4/5 to me. <snip> But definitely not a 7.5.

maybe if you tried to send some RATT that would help??
Sent song as old as me :DSo did I, as it happens.
Instead I went for something that Train really liked. Sent just now.IN MY HEART :heart
more the opposite, why send something that someone else could send for me?
more the opposite, why send something that someone else could send for me?
Speaking only for myself, but when I was a roulette host, I wanted to get some stuff I hadn't heard of before, yes, but I also wanted people to introduce me to some of the more DTF-popular artists that I just wasn't familiar with at the time. A lot of the artists people sent me were ones I'd obviously heard of and that tons of different people could have sent me, but I appreciated someone saying "here's this song, maybe this will convince you to like the band." I actually appreciate people basically making me listen to something from an artist I had heard of but not bothered with before.
Got a lot of stuff to send from that era, but I want to keep sending only ballads and see how far it will take me. Sending something in an hour.
On the time-period rounds: Are live versions of songs that originally came out during the time period okay, even if the live version itself came out afterwards? (assuming no drastic changes to the song in the live version, the original song just has shit production :lol)
You mean like if you were to send Rush's Working Man from Rush in Rio even though the original came out in 1974? Hmmmm... I have to think about that.
Wasn't it Parama who sent you a bloody Kamelot song? :lol He's just bullshitting you here.
reminder: my tastes have gotten really weird since 425's roulette ended :lol
Never heard of them.
Splent, my song is not on Spotify. Can I still send the youtube link?
What's your take on dissonant piano notes, chords or arpeggios?
I'll do the letter in a bit. I want to see if Evermind can guess any :lol
Sent a DTF fav.
This is a long shot if I've ever seen one, but: Devin Townsend - Bad Devil?I'm sure it's Kanye Westward - The Butts :neverusethis:
Ah of course, it's The Kanye West Project's sideprojectThis is a long shot if I've ever seen one, but: Devin Townsend - Bad Devil?I'm sure it's Kanye Westward - The Butts :neverusethis:
I was about to send Starálfur or another one from that album, but wanted to reserve Hoppipola for the next open round. Oh well.
I sent Sigur Ros after splent rejected The Smashing Pumpkins.
Spence, I think most will have a hard time figuring out my song's title.
So from which year are the songs that you guys sent?1984
I didn't repeat the artist name because it was from the same one I guessed before, I guess that's why this one hasn't appeared on the hangman yet so I'll clarify:
Devin Townsend - Funeral (Paramaribo)
ahh good old Funeral, wonder who sent that
god, so many of you guys really want the D :neverusethis:
This round overall is very strong.
i mean, i sent a fantastic song so it basically has to bring the average of the round up a little by itself
6/10
Okay, wild stab at the song above Kiske...
Saxon - Grind
I also see Shadow Gallery but don't know the song.
Yep :tup

Fadis - Touch

I though you just pulled a me with auto correct. :lol
last one prob but I'll do a full rundown at home :corn
Should've had this one as one of the tidbits for last round :lol
This song is great but could stand to be about 2 minutes shorter.
:lolShould've had this one as one of the tidbits for last round :lol
This song is great but could stand to be about 2 minutes shorter.
While I'm not familiar with this band, the sound was what I expected.
When I saw who wrote this song I wasn't surprised it sounded the way it did.maybe this one
His voice is very powerful here.
This song is great but could stand to be about 2 minutes shorter.
This was nice. I can't say much past that other than nice.
1. i have no clue what this means lol
2. this is probably bad devil
3. i hope not
4. please no
5. probably not
6. no
7. i could see you maybe thinking that but i heavily disagree if so
8. i hope not
9. no, because not a band really
10. this is the most generic tidbit i've ever seen
11. this is a song from the 80's, so, no
12. yes please aww yeah gimme that
Ruslan knows my song. His voice is very powerful here.
Definitely applies! This song is great but could stand to be about 2 minutes shorter.
I guess I could see someone thinking this about my song. Though I would disagree.
When I saw who wrote this song I wasn't surprised it sounded the way it did.Probably mine.
So, results when?
What is the next Round? Years? Open?Female Vocalists.
I have a few options and I'm gonna try and not send lorde for once I guess
Also, ban CHVRCHES.I have a few options and I'm gonna try and not send lorde for once I guess
I thought I banned Lorde anyway
EDIT: No, I guess I didn't. :omg:

Nice, I hoped this would score so well. Will send soon for next round, something shorter this time around probably.
Also, I was totally considering CHVRCHES after your comment on liking synth pop and them not being in your banned list, but then you wrote that you loved them and I was like "DAMN :lol".
And, for the next round: Does it have to be 100% female vocals or can there be some male harmonies or background singers? ( Or spoken male voice, but female singer?)
Hath...fucking Yanni?? :lol You are one versatile dude!
Bad Devil > Funeral :corn
I just, can't believe how insane you all are
When I do my roulette, I'm going to livestream my first listening session of each roundHope you're not giving -1 point for popcorn :corn
oh yeah, i need to figure out something to send still don't i
Actually I encourage the use of :corn. :cornI forgot to post this before https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GU-g48vxgV8
Sacul, Tim, Chad, Ruslan, Scorp, you guys ok?

honestly i have no clue to send. i feel like anything i could send would be "not good enough"
probably will score low enough to get eliminated from the roulette with this entry but i sent.
I sent on Friday. It should be in your PM's.
MØ - Never Wanna Know
MØ - Never Wanna Know
You and Evermind should go head to head
I considered bent knee but they were sent on the roulette championships iirc so that felt redundant to me.
p.s. I'd have sent in god we trust
I'd be surprised if they were both bent knee as splent usually puts same artist submissions next to each other
I'd be surprised if they were both bent knee as splent usually puts same artist submissions next to each other
I've never heard of Bent Knee.
I've never heard of Bent Knee.
I don't think they're your kind of band.
They're not really my kind of band either.
i am a colossal screw-up
I've never heard of Bent Knee.
Splent, you forgot one d in name of my artist (no, she is not she-male).
I'd say "Sacul's loss, too," but he won anyway, so... :lolI l|
MØ - Never Wanna Know
You and Evermind should go head to head
Challenge accepted.
7th one: Bent Knee - Battle Creek
The last one: Bent Knee - Leak Water
Probably wrong on both but what the hell. :lol
bannedI'd say "Sacul's loss, too," but he won anyway, so... :lolI l|

:neverusethis:
I'm terrible at this honestly, the only tiems I got them right without any letters were when obvious hints were given (Devin Townsend, Funeral and Bad Devil) or in this case because I just so happened to see Mo live last summer and dug it, and since female artists with 2 letters are pretty limited.MØ - Never Wanna Know

Okay, since ToN seems to hesitate...If your roulette was any indication: I'm not an expert at female vocalists
Beautiful Sin - Take Me Home
Sacul, did you send Janelle Monae - Tightrope?Yes I did, rad song. But I'm kinda regretting it a bit, might as well have gone with Come Alive :P
Okay, since ToN seems to hesitate...
Beautiful Sin - Take Me Home
unfortunately I can't guess but if I could I would guess P
D U R P
Goldfrapp - Drew
This song wasn't bad but it really didn't go anywhere. Is this me
So... are people just going to stop guessing letters for hangman? :'(
Here are my tidbits:
This type of music takes me back to middle and high school when this genre was more predominant. Sometimes I wish it would come back just a bit to contrast the highly energetic pop scene right now.
This song really grew on me. That voice is... unique.
I had no idea what was going on in the intro but once the song settled in I really enjoyed it.
Every song I send. This song wasn't bad but it really didn't go anywhere. Is this me
Well if you aren't worried about people waiting 3 before guessing again anymore: E
The fourth song is most probably called "Do What You Have to Do", but I don't know any of the female-fronted bands / female artists who has such a song.
guessing A after evermind's
what the heck is the artist with non of the guessed letters except r tho
Sarah Maclaclin? Sp?
Yeah, see, now I wasted my H-guess.
Yeah, see, now I wasted my H-guess.I'm sorry man. I did what I had to do.
song title is probably Do What You Want to Do, splent said it's not Have
Do ___t _ou ___e t_ Do
This song combines about 8 different genres of music and does so perfectly.please any of these
I REALLY enjoy the energy in this one, not just by the singer but by the entire group.
This song was just fun.
For the next round: Does some yodeling count for the world music bonus? (and do you mind some lyrics in a foreign language?)
what's the prize for not having my song guessedNot having your song guessed :P

no if you're in splent's roulette you're not supposed to send paramacore
HOW BOUT I DO ANYWAY
I'll guess C for hangman :P
Fuck, just ran out of popcorn...
Bubblegum popcorn?
Bubblegum popcorn?
https://youtu.be/Wp_K8prLfso
that's not electronic drums, pretty sure she actually plays the drums on the song :corn
anyways i'm just gonna send paramacore i dunno. i'm really bored sending songs just to fit your tastes
have you heard what guitars sound like in pop country these days, it's disgusting
Last breath of Tomislav95 in splent's roulette 2016: sent.
i think i sent
Not on Spotify.
Does Spotify accept Kinginese? Just a thought.
*blackhands* :lol
:corn
i'm going to guess one of the songs
east of the wall - the direction of oceans
And the new season of OITNB didn't help either..... :neverusethis:
Nice! Glad you liked. Just made the Elite Eight. Cool!
Will send something tomorrow! What are you in the mood for, Splent??
Still waiting on six of you.
Sent!
I assume mine was ok?Let me guess. Love To Love? ;D
I sent a few days ago? Sure you didn't get it?
Ok then, never got that message but I'll try to resubmit tomorrow but I don't have access to my music right now.
No longer waiting on me. Since I sent some German 70s alternative electronic music I hope it will be fine this time. Also fully expect to completely blow all of my chances at making the next cut with this :lol.
Also I'm totally expecting this to stick out like a sore thumb from all the other submissions this round.

Obviously, I'm not into Joe Jackson, but I thought that was an 80's song.
:lol
I've listened to all your playlists.
Needs a "stop watching OITNB" option :p
I'm going to try to post tidbits tomorrow and results on Saturday; otherwise, results won't come until Tuesday. Is this now the case?
mikemangjoysmike mang joys
Can i already send for the next round (and maybe the Epic round as well, in case I should make it)? Like I said in mikemangjoys roulette, I'm quite unikely to have time to send anything starting Wednesday and 10 days from then on. If you're only going to post results late on Tuesday, I won't have time to send anymore.
I am unsure how I am going to run the EP portion of the roulette though. I've never been a part of one (unless you count jjrock's bonus round). How do you guys usually run those? Do you have a theme? Do you require like a ballad? A time limit? My thinking was let's say one person has a 5 song EP and one person has a 6 song EP, I rate the songs out of 10 or 20 (not sure yet), and then add up scores and divide by the number of songs so I get the average. Is that what people usually do?
I weighted every song by its length tbhI might do this.
I still have no clue how I ended up #2 on that roulette.
That one was a disaster in many senses, I promise my v3 will be less chaotic :lol
nobody will win my upcoming roulette tbh
Alright, song of the round! Too bad everyone else also scored high! Definitely check out more of Crimson. They have some great, great tracks/albums.

The guitar work is excellent here.
You really touched on a genre I've always wanted to explore more of, and this just makes me want to dive into it. GREAT song.[/i]
I feel like the (genre) of the song gets in the way of the music sometimes, but I like the instrumentation.
I would take your old fogey master card away if you didn't get it.
I don't yet you old bastard. :lol
:soon:
Too :soon:?
splent, you already have my epic as well, correct?
Sent via Spotify. This one should go over pretty well, but I'm probably still going to struggle to break into the top 3.
I guess I'm out no matter what I send, and I didn't score less than 9 all this time wtf :lol
Good, cause I don't have any time to put together my EP either :lol
Take your time bro...
bother splent for his roulette results so i can start mine, djankmanen
when your roulette has been going on 3 months you better believe I am :corn
Since Train is going on vacation as well, and mine is basically in the penultimate round... Maybe Dave will make an exception to the rule and allow you to start yours a few days early? I mean I anticipate mine being finished before the end of July. This roulette is slowing down, Dennis is about to go on hiatus for a week or so, and Parama only wants to run a mini-roulette anyway.
Do what you have to do. We'll wait.
Do what you have to do. We'll wait.
10/10 everything tbh
Seriously one of the best epics I have ever heard.

the first song is At the End of the Day?
the last one is something Part 1 or 2 or whatever
i had no clue it was spock's beard it was just a really easy title to guess :lol
Hey you settle down and get that vanilla ice cream ready.
:corn
I swear if I eat any more popcorn I'll puke.......
i need more music like paul oldfield tbh
Wow I only got an 8 for that song, that's disappointing.
I did enjoy this roulette quite a bit though despite it dragging in places, so thanks for having me. :tup
Hell yeah man...
Not sure if you caught it, it's pretty subtle, but in that chorus section you mention, it starts out with Aleena and Patrik singing pretty much together, but as they dig into the chorus, Patrik subtly fades out bit by bit until it's just Aleena belting out the "They break through the clouds and they reach for the stars....." part. I get chills every time, and I've heard it much more than a hundred my friend. So glad you liked the song, I had a sneaky feeling you would.
Oh, and does Per Nilsson rip that fucking guitar or what? Dudes a fucking beast on this track.
I'll get my EP to you by tomorrow night at the latest, got one more song to pick for it and I want to fine tune things.
Bumparoo.
I start a new job on Monday, a little closer to home, but still like a 45-50 min commute (hey, 10 min closer means 20 minutes more and I am only in one building). I should polish off my listenings by midweek and end this thing. Sorry for leaving you all hanging. I can't stand my commutes but my listens made them more tolerable.
Hopefully my next one won't be so long to drag on into the summer when ironically I have less time for listening :P
hangmanen when :corn
