Listening to this new release from Advent Horizon now and it is pretty cool.

https://adventhorizon.bandcamp.com/album/a-cell-to-call-home

This track features a ripping solo by Randy McStine. Jordan Rudess also has a spot on the album. Dave Meros too.

https://adventhorizon.bandcamp.com/track/how-did-it-get-so-good

Nice balance of lighter and heavy moments. Really like the singer too. No growls detected so far despite the cover being done by the same guy who does Opeth and a bunch of other metal acts.

It's... Um... Has moments of good. (And I liked the singles, but it doesn't work as an album experience.)

Wow, three tracks in and this is sounding REAL nice! Didn't know this band at all.

EDIT: Yep, listened to the whole thing and it's great. Bright melodies all over, very well produced and the performances are top notch. It's all very fluid, and yet the songs have interesting twists and turns. Good stuff, thanks for the rec!  :tup

I’d never heard of them either. If Randy McStine hadn’t shared the clip of his solo yesterday I’d have probably never come across it. Quite a pleasant surprise. Rare that I find a heavier album that I like these days.

Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

Sulphur Aeon too…their last one was very good

Good to see other fans of theirs here.  I posted about their first single and heard nothing but crickets, so I thought I might be the only fan of them here.  The third single that just dropped is quite different for them.

First listen of the new Stortregn, and my reaction is basically the same as when Kade first introduced me to them in one of my roulettes, the entire write-up for which was:

wolfking – Stortregn

First impression: Epic as hell.

Final opinion: Epic as hell.

Round score: 8.8

The Answer Lies in the Black Void - Thou Shalt

I had no idea. Litho - did you know? I'm a fan of their first album, I think you were too? I'll happily listen to anything with Martina Horváth, anyway  :)

Small Leaks Sink Ships - Low Tide

this album is not released until next week (10/20), but if you preorder, it includes a download/stream of the whole record per their bandcamp.

I'm a fanboy, but can't deny I'm loving this sucker already and trying not to overplay it (been listening to a lot of Everything Everything as well this week per I'm seeing them live tonight).

Yep, it's been on my list.  I'll hopefully get to it tonight.  Their first was amazing.  They should draw in some Thy Catafalque fans since Martina has been on some of their recent albums.  Their general sound is quite different, but they have some quite experimental elements at times as well.  I'm not too big on stoner metal, but their debut took that sort of guitar sound and recontextualized it in a much more palatable way for me.

Listened once, and it sounded very good. I don’t know if I’d put them in the stoner genre to start with…the debut was, um, weird doom, maybe? ;) some occasional industrial influence sprinkled here and there too. I didn’t hear much of that in the new one, but it wasn’t a very focused listen. I know there were a couple of screams in there, though :)

Oh no, that was my point, they're not a stoner band, it's just that on their debut the guitar tone was the sort of sound you'd hear from a stoner band.

And that mainly comes from the guitarist Jason Köhnen being part of stoner bands like Celestial Season and Bong-Ra.

Yes, Celestial Season! Big fan of their Solar Lovers album...it had a cool cover of Ultravox's Vienna too. They were mostly death/doom then and they drifted into a more 70s/stoner direction soon after, but their recent comeback albums do rediscover some of that earlier style. Interestingly, Jason Köhnen played drums on those early albums...I think now he plays a little bit of everything.

I can't remember if Nachtmerrie listened to TALITBV's debut, but it should be right in his wheelhouse as well with the ethereal doom sound, particularly since the stoner element seems to be something he's more into than I am.

Just finished it.  On first listen I prefer the debut, but will obviously need more plays to let it settle in.  It has a more psychedelic feel this time around, the atmosphere is more often created with rotary speaker effects on the clean guitars.  There was some of that on the first album too, just less from memory.  I don't recall as much experimentation either this time, like some of the crazy more avant-garde-ish moments on the debut.

In the vein of "different" doom, another release from last Friday I wasn't fully aware of until, well, it happened:

Vanishing Kids - Miracle of Death

Their previous album, Heavy Dreamer, was very good, and this one could be even better. Ethereal, dreamy female vocals (not your typical vocals, though) and a shoegazey atmosphere, but not afraid of heavier guitars. The opener, "Spill the Dark" is a good sample for their sound. Excellent song.

Overall, just the right length for an album like this. And the closer is another highlight for sure.

Hmm, sounds intriguing.

Stortregn's is pretty good.  Been meaning to finally check out a full album from them, and it's definitely more on the melodic side of tech death that I like.

Sulphur Aeon's is incredible, definitely a strong candidate for the upper tier of my year-end list.  A bit less heavy and more melodic than past releases, which is fine with me.
