I don't know when specifically these came out but for the traditional metalists:

That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad
I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".

They can get VERY doomy, and are sometimes a bit over the top with the spoken word and such. But they are very good at what they do (been around for a long time, despite the relatively sparse output)

The song "The Calling", from their last album, moves along at a relatively brisker pace and it's a tasty one.

Oh, and the album was produced by Fleming Rasmussen!

Just finishing the title track of the new album. Yeah, it's pretty slow, and those vocals may prove a bit too deep for me. Sounds cool though. I'll stick with a few more songs. Er.. It's all pretty slow.

You can hear the whole album in that first link. Pretty unusual project for Andy Tillison to be involved in. Some interesting instrumental passages at least.

Nocturnal Breed - Carry the Beast

Looking forward to the Pyramaze.  And Nocturnal Breed is so important, it had to be listed twice??

Man, this thing is CATCHY!  :) The last thing I'd heard from them was Disciples of the Sun, which I enjoyed greatly. Bloodlines seems a little more straightforward melodic metal, but I'm not complaining.

I'm never sure what people mean by "melodic metal".  It gets used for power metal, hair metal, melodic death metal, symphonic metal, etc.

Yeah, you are not wrong there  ;) I purposefully left as generic as possible...I mean, it's all clean vocals, with keys very prominent in the mix, pop-like hooks in the choruses, and mostly mid-paced (i.e. not much of the helicopter double-bass you hear in Euro power metal)

I'd say the previous records I'd heard were more in a power-prog vein...never too complex anyway...but this one leans more into the straightforward, melodic side of things. Very enjoyable stuff.

It just always prompts further questions in a conversation.  There's not really a whole lot of metal that isn't melodic to some degree.  An umbrella like "extreme metal" at least indicates a significant amount of harsh vocals and aggression over normal, but it could be death, could be black, maybe grindcore, possibly some doom or thrash, etc.  The "melodic" tag just gets used so strangely though, like Metal-Archives lists Sonata Arctica as "power metal", but Jani Liimatainen as "melodic power metal".  As if SA isn't melodic?
