Agalloch really doesn't seem like moshing music at all.

"Hey, here comes the atmospheric, acoustic section... LET'S BEAT SOME FUCKIN' HEADS! YEAH!"

That's exactly how it went though! They opened with Falling Snow and the second those kids heard the opening riff they started moshing. It's not really even that heavy of a song.

Me: "How?"
Cole: "Well you know when you try to scratch your balls, and you scratch too hard?

Turns out that Agalloch are coming here in April next year, first time ever they play in Sweden, and this is a band that rarely does much touring in Europe anyways, and it's only a 10-15 minute drive from where I live, it's in the city.
Can it get much better? NO! :caffeine:

I'm gonna buy tickets today or tomorrow, but this is a band I thought I would never see live, so these news just makes me excited as hell! :caffeine:

even if they sucked live, it's worth going for all the exclusive merch they bring on tour (especially vinyl).

I'm surprised you haven't actually, didn't they tour the east coast a while ago, or was that the west coast? :P
Oh well, they should have gone by you!

Still disappointed by Marrow... When they said in the interviews that they found AATG too mechanical/clean and wanted to return to their oldest material, I should have noticed. Oh well, some of it is still good, but it's nothing on AATG or Mantle.

It's a shame they thought AATG wasn't good enough. It's one of my favorite albums ever.

Also it's weird that they think it's "mechanical/clean", I always though that was a pretty "raw" metal album.

I somewhat agree on Marrow.
On one hand, I do love it, but when ranking the albums, it just ends up my least favorite Agalloch-album, I'd say mostly due to the production/sound, but just being slightly weaker.
It does have some great tunes, but Ashes Against the Grain remains my favorite, and Pale Folklore and The Mantle are pretty much even after that.

My opinion of MotS has dropped a bit since release.  There's several things I don't like it about, including 1) bad use of nature samples (the wind samples in PF were perfect and added greatly to the atmosphere; this album just sounds like they're playing over a nature sounds CD), 2) production is just kind of bland compared to their others and adds nothing to the atmosphere, 3) weak guitar tones, and 4) less compelling melodies in general.

Btw, I've kind of been falling in love with Hollow Stone lately.  So surreal and beautiful.

Yeah, they thought the guitar tone was too strong/mechanical on AATG, which is totally not true - that's what I loved about that album :(

absolutely. "Hawthorne" is one of the best compositions the band ever put together, i think. i especially love the 'nature's memory' recollection of "She Painted Fire Across the Skyline" in the middle, possibly more than the use of the "A Celebration for the Death of Man" theme across the album.

i'd put it, "In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion," and "Odal" in my top 5 Agalloch pieces (likely rounded out by "Scars of the Shattered Sky" and "Sowilo Rune").

"Agalloch have completed the recording of their forthcoming EP entitled “Faustian Echoes”. With acclaimed engineer Billy Anderson at the helm, the band recorded a 20 minute long conceptual and colossal track live onto two-inch tape. The recording took place at Jackpot Studio in Portland, Oregon during March 24th-25th. A release date has yet to be set, but we will keep you all updated through our official Facebook page. This EP will appear on both LP and CD. We have made a photo album of photos taken by Veleda Thorsson of this session."

Anyone ever get The Demonstration Archives and/or Whitedivisiongrey?  I'm wondering if they're worth getting.  They're on Agalloch's site, but they're both kinda pricey so I'm not sure if I want to take the plunge on them.

I'm seeing Agalloch in a week, assuming they sell Whitedivisiongrey on the concert, I'll pick it up right away without hesitating. Both EP's are awesome. (if they don't have it for some reason, I'll order it next month when I get cash)

Whitedivisiongrey is a must have.

The Demonstration Archives is just a bunch of demos and is kinda cool I guess.

Demonstration sucks unless you're a collector ("The Wilderness" and "This Old Cabin" are the only exclusives; they're good, but obviously not enough to have made Pale Folklore). The Compendium Archive is much, much better, but they only sold it on tour for some stupid reason.

Just came home from seeing Agalloch, really awesome concert. The opening band; Velnias didn't really impress me much. Could be that I haven't heard their stuff enough, but their music seemed to lack any "hook" or something to keep me interested, sadly I felt like they were a bit mediocre. But the tickets to the show were really cheap, so Agalloch alone made it totally worth it. Pretty epic venue, they played at an old prison across the street from the biggest cemetery in the city, something John pointed out, it was also their first time here in Sweden, so pretty epic venue to play for the first time. (I think they loved it)
They had to shorten their setlist a bit, probably due to time restraints, and they might have had minor technical difficulties, though it didn't show during the songs.
Setlist:

1. Into the Painted Grey
2. Falling Snow
3. The Watcher's Monolith
4. Limbs
5. Ghost of the Midwinter Fires
6. Bloodbirds
---Encores---
7. In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion
8. Kneel to the Cross

Looks similar to their US leg. I'm a little bummed they don't play the e-bow intro to Limbs, though. To me that build up to the actual song makes it incredible.

I was a bit surprised they didn't play the full intro either, but I guess when it's in the middle of the set it's "easier" or more logical to start a bit into the song. If they had played it as the first encore or something, then maybe the full intro would have been more effective. :P
But yeah, all in all the concert was really amazing. Wouldn't have complained if I had gotten one or two songs more, but hopefully they'll come back again.
