Title: Agalloch Appreciation-thread
Post by: Zantera on November 23, 2009, 10:43:47 AM
I searched around on the forum, but doesn't seem like this awesome group has it's own thread. (which i think they deserve)
Everyone's thoughts on this band?
Both The Mantle and Ashes Against the Grain are masterpieces imo, i actually haven't heard Pale Folklore yet, but im working on getting my hands on a copy. :P
I was also a bit surprised when i heard The Hawthorne Passage, and the sample from the Ingmar Bergman-movie. "Vem är du?" -"Jag är döden"

In the shadow of our pale companion, Falling snow, Not unlike the waves and The hawthorne passage are my favorites this far. =)

They require particular circumstances and moods to be enjoyed to their fullest, but under those circumstances, they're brilliant.

I have consistently failed miserably at getting fully into this band, got 3/4 the way each time then stopped. I should probably go listen to them.

How dare you start this thead before me? No matter, I am just glad to see another fan of this incredible band

I am not going to go into detail of why I love Agalloch or what their best works are. All I know, is that I have never tired of listening to them and I eagerly await any new material they will produce.

I think i read on wikipedia (good source :D) that a new Agalloch album is in the works, and aimed for 2010.
So i guess its kinda good, if there's any truth in it. =D

I like this fan too  ;)

So which is the best Agalloch album? I'm tempted to try a different one instead of listening to the same one. My brother owns three albums and an EP, not sure which though.

Also, I wonder if they list Opeth in their influences.

I won't believe it till I hear them actually say it, but still heres hoping

You're favourites are nearly the same as mine  :omg: Not Unlike The Waves in phenomenal. Mantle is just amazing across the board.

I do also highly recommend their 08 EP "The White". It's pretty experimental with most of the metal elements gone, but it's just a beautiful record and another fine addition to their discography  :D

Oh dear  :lol bad typo

You are asking me to choose which child I love the most....well you just can't go wrong with the Mantle. Sit down for an hour, listen to the thing as a whole. It's is an experience let me tell you that. (the cover is my avatar is you were wondering what to look for  :hat )

I've been listening to The Mantle a lot the last few days, and GOD.. i love it.
One of the bests album ever made IMO, it has a perfect balance of different types of songs, and i love every second of it.
I haven't listened as much to Ashes Against the Grain, which is also really awesome, but i might like The Mantle more. :) (AATG has masterpieces like falling snow, limbs and not unlike the waves though)

I own all 3 major studio albums. Though I usually have to be in the right mood to properly enjoy them, they're an amazing band. "The Mantle" is one of my favorite albums of all time.

Wow it was excellent! Really liked the set list. Sound could have been a bit louder but I can't complain   . The bonus features were also great, the interview, the photos and the alternative Not Unlike The Waves music vid (which was much better than the original imo). I'd definitely recommend checking it out if anyone else is a fan of this band wanting to check it out.

I too needed to download it (and I am very happy there were a decent amount of seeders!  :omg: ), being in Australia it would be near impossible to find that DVD in any store here. Let me know if you find any online retailers for it with international shipping though  ;)

More acoustic-guitars.

I still love AATG the most, but Agalloch is so amazing overall.
Ashes Against the Grain - my favorite album ever
The Mantle - my top20
Pale Folklore - my top100

thats pretty decent from a band that's only made 3 albums. :)
Really looking forward to their next, though i don't see how they can top AATG.

I don't know. I just can't see them putting out something that isn't amazing. That sounds extemely fan-boyish, but It seems it would be harder for them to do a bad album than do a great album  :lol

Also according to some guy on last.fm "New release on the way. Fursy Teyssier is doing the art." If you know him, he also did the Alcest cover art for Ecailles De Lune (which is superb). Fursy says on one of his myspace blogs "I'm pleased to inform you that I just finished working for an upcoming release by AGALLOCH, (I unfortunately can't tell you what)"

I have yet to be disappointed by this guy's work and I think the next album's art is going to be very good  ;) . AATG's cover art was a bit disappointing, but it did fit the mood of the album. I prefered the alternate cover with the bird

The only band I feel that way about it Opeth, although some days I consider Agalloch my favorite band.  I think some of Agalloch's songs sound like they're trying to be artsy, like if they were playing at a coffee/poetry house (see: Birch White).

Yes, it is. I actually think the album is a grower. And since I fucking loved it the first time I heard it, that's pretty amazing. I could listen to Falling Snow 1000 times and I woud still enjoy it  :lol

Although my opinion remains that The Mantle is their masterpeice, I don't really compare the three albums because they are quite different, and all superb.  :hefdaddy

Ye, Agalloch are truly amazing.
3 albums, all 3 are fantastic.
Not many bands succeed with that.
Personally, i think The Mantle requires me to be in a certain mood.
If im in that mood, then it's phenomenal, if i'm not, then i only listen to ITSoOPC or "I am the Wooden Doors". :P

It does take a few listens to sink in. All the subtle acoustic parts and ambient sections. It's such a very open album. It's definitely one of those albums, which you have to be in the mood for, and when you are it becomes more an experience then a simple collection of songs.  :)

Agalloch is proud to announce a renewed relationship with Profound Lore Records who will release our long-awaited 4th full length album. Profound Lore originally released our debut and sophomore albums on vinyl in 2005, including the amazing wooden sleeve edition of “Pale Folklore.” The artistic attitude and level of integrity from Profound Lore is why we are extremely pleased to have them represent Agalloch.
The new album will be recorded throughout June and July, but we do not wish to make any concrete statements regarding a release date at this time.

Yep. IIRC they have hired a cellist for this album, so there will definitely be some strings. I also hope for a return of some females vocals as seen in their debut. Either way, it's gonna kick ass.

OH GOD YES

Quote from: https://www.profoundlorerecords.com//index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=998&Itemid=2
Where the three predecessors to “Marrow Of The Spirit” (namely “Pale Folklore”, “The Mantle”, and the aforementioned “Ashes Against The Grain”) all differ from each other, the same can be applied with the new album as “Marrow Of The Spirit” is unlike anything AGALLOCH have ever produced before.  This is also the first album to feature new AGALLOCH drummer Aesop Dekker (also in Profound Lore acts LUDICRA and WORM OUROBOROS) and features guest appearances by cellist Jackie Perez Gratz (GRAYCEON, GIANT SQUID, ASUNDER, AMBER ASYLUM), Jeffrey Neblock (VINDENSANG), and Nathan Carson (WITCH MOUNTAIN, TWO-TON BOA, SUNN 0)))).

Recorded and mixed on analog through the means of exquisite vintage gear within the months of July and August in Portland, Oregon at Audible Alchemy Studios with (FAUST guitarist) Steven Wray Lobdell and mastered and manifested in San Francisco, California at Trakworx Studios with Justin Weis (LUDICRA, SLOUGH FEG, HAMMERS OF MISFORTUNE) the six time-stretching songs that encompass “Marrow Of The Spirit” each come across as their own distinct identities amongst themselves.  At over an hour in length, “Marrow Of The Spirit” is AGALLOCH’s darkest, bleakest, most dense, detailed and aggressive album to date and in turn is the most accomplished album of their career.

To officially be released in North America Nov 23th through Profound Lore Records, tracklisting for “Marrow Of The Spirit” goes as follows:

1.    They Escaped The Weight Of Darkness [3:41]
2.    Into The Painted Grey [12:25]
3.    The Watcher’s Monolith [11:46]
4.    Black Lake Nidstang [17:34]
5.    Ghosts Of The Midwinter Fires [9:40]
6.    To Drown [10:27]

WEST COAST TOUR WITH ALLERSEELEN ANNOUNCED

In accordance with the release of “Marrow Of The Spirit”, AGALLOCH have announced a West Coast tour with Austrian industrial/neo-folk/martial ambient act Allerseelen.  The tour begins on Dec 17th in AGALLOCH’s hometown of Portland, Oregon which will also serve as their record release show.  The dates with Allerseelen go as follows:

December
12/17 – Portland, OR @ Berbati’s Pan (w/Aerial Ruin)
12/18 – Seattle, WA @ Neumo’s (w/Alda)
12/21 – Los Angeles, CA @ tba
12/22 – San Francisco, CA @ Great American Music Hall (w/Dispirit)

I'm happy about the new direction as well.
AATG is my favorite Agalloch-album, but what i love about them is the uniqueness each album has, and if they had made AATG2, that would've been broken.
Even though i haven't heard it yet, just by reading the description i think the new album could be my favorite. :P

Yeah, that's basically my stance on it. They just seem to be the kind of band you'd expect to require 'proper' listening, but I find it to be basically the opposite with them. And GY!BE. I'll probably be needing that shield again.

Title: Re: Agalloch Appreciation-thread
Post by: Portrucci on October 26, 2010, 08:15:39 PM
I think at some points it gets very "soundtrack" like (which I love) where there will be long 'descriptive' sections without vocals. The Mantle does this especially well (The Hawthorne Passage, I'm looking at you). Where you can pretty much create a scene in your mind with the forlorn acoustic guitar in the background. So if that is also what you meant, I agree  :)

I hope not. Most of my favourite genres can by classified as such  :lol (soundtracks, ambient, post-rock...)

hmm this is getting a bit side-tracked

anyway my vote for album-art of the year

I can't really call myself a fan; I'm familiar with their sound and such, but never gave them a real listen.

However, I grabbed Ecailles de Lune a few hours ago and listened to it on the way to the store. It was absolutely incredible, and'll probably be one of my top albums of the year.

Yeah, that's what I mean, perhaps background music was a bad way to refer to it.

And to clear things up, I LOVE 'background' style music. I'm just getting into Bohren And Der Club Of Gore and they're fast becoming one of my favourite bands to listen to at night.

I don't like their growls at all. I wasn't pleasantly surprised so far by this song, the ending was awesome but the other parts were a bit meh, maybe I wasn't in the mood. Which is weird, because I always love and am in the mood for Our Fortress is Burning I and II (3 not so much).

It's definitely their saddest album and a great addition to their discography. I can't compare it to their other albums yet...it just wouldn't be fair. But this is my album of the year. What a journey...  :hefdaddy

Also; I will say this album is a grower. Overwhelming at first, but on my second listen now, I can follow more closely and I can recognize the song structure.

Album of the year? That title belongs to We're Here Because We're Here i'm afraid :P

I already have 2 albums i would rank over Anathema on that front actually.  :P
(The River Empires and Oceansize)
This Year has been phenomenal to be honest, even when i make my top10 in ~2 months, there will still be great albums left out.

OnT: I listened to this album for the first time about an hour ago.
It's hard to say something about it just from that one listen, but i know that it will grow a lot.
On the negative side, i listened to it from my speakers and the sun was shining outside, i think the experience will be better if i listen tonight when its dark, and in my headphones. :P
I can't say many things clicked at first, but it isn't strange considering the enormous length on the tracks, i really wanna give them all a few listens. :)
What i really loved about most of the album, is that there were a lot of territories i've never heard the band go into before, and that was a very pleasant surprise.
My opinion on the tracks after one listen:

1. They Escaped the Weight of Darkness
Very interesting intro, i really liked the cello and the river.
Atmospheric, and it really sums up the Agalloch-sound imo.

2. Into the Painted Grey
After the pretty bombastic intro i would've expected this to be a song in the same vein as Not Unlike the Waves, but it slowed down and overall it was a very positive surprise, because it didn't take the direction i thought it would.

3. The Watcher's Monolith
Solid song overall, i especially digged the piano outro.

4. Black Lake Nidstång
My favorite after the first listen, because it's still Agalloch, but exploring new territories.
I don't have any timestamps, but somewhere in the middle there were a really interesting vocal-part, i've never heard John Haughm sing in that style before, and it really grabbed me.
Also, there was some ambient-build up part a few minutes after that, which i also loved.

5. Ghost of the Midwinter Fires
A bit too early to tell, but i really liked it.

6. To Drown
The same here, i think my first listen of this album got a bit ruined because of the fact that i kept thinking: "OMG this is Agalloch's new album!!!". :D
Cool outro though.

I can't say I was blown away on my first or second listen, but I always tend to give negative opinions on something too early, then come to regret it later, so I'll refrain for now.

Man I wasn't really that satisfied on my first listen.

I've always loved that Agalloch was able to get that black metal-ish sound without blast beats, so I was not fond of the use of blast beats on this album.

There were plenty of high points, but I don't think those high points were nearly as good as the ones on PF, TM, or AATG.  I was kinda disappointed that Black Lake Nidstang didn't have as many really rockin sections.

The album is really fucking good though, I think I just really got myself over-excited.  The atmosphere is amazing; its so emotional and depressing and melancholic.

Also, I think it's gonna be a grower.  I've only listened to it once, and I was not paying 100% attention.  I kinda feel like the song lengths threw me off a bit.  I'm used to the 5-10 min range with Agalloch, so the longer tracks were a little strange.

Maybe it's not that I'm disappointed but that I was expecting something different.  But you never know what you're gonna get with Agalloch, and that is part of what makes them so incredible.  They now have four full length albums and all of them are distinctively unique.

Tomorrow I will put down my blinds, shut the door, put on my headphones, close my eyes, and give this album a proper listen.  I can't really say that it's a disappointing album without having given it plenty of proper listens.

I think this album is fantastic, though i've only heard it about 3-4 times.
The 2 songs that hasn't really grown as much on me as the rest are "Into the Painted Grey" and "The Watcher's Monolith", but i'm sure they will get there.
As for the other songs, i love the guitars in "Ghosts of the Midwinter Fires" and the 'hit you in the face'-outro in "To Drown".
But the personal highlight for me is "Black Lake Nidstång", because it's really sad and dark, i especially love the vocals around the 7.30 mark, and the awesome ambient-build up after that.

I swear the album gets better everytime I listen to it. Also wanted to appreciate 0:53 in Into the Painted Grey, with those overlapped guitars. Lets just hold on a minute, and try to comprehend how good that section is. I was just blown away when I first heard it  :hefdaddy

Also, To Drown might be my favourite track on the album  :heart

I agree. Just exactly what you want from an EP. short, consistent and experimental. It makes for a great contrast with Marrow. Haughms "Ahhhhh"s in Pantheist  :heart :heart

IMO, Pantheist and Sowilo Rune are the only two really great songs on The White.

Post by: Zantera on November 23, 2010, 04:25:05 AM
The White is awesome all the way through, Pantheist is my favorite-track on it.
But i also think The Grey deserves some appreciation, the dismantled version of The Lodge =  :hefdaddy and don't even get me started on the Odal-remix.  :metal
Title: Re: Agalloch Appreciation-thread

Yep The Grey is very good too. So is their split with Nest (The Wolves of Timberline). Of Stone, Wind and Pillor is actually pretty mediocre IMO. I even have it on vinyl and it hasn't endeared itself to me. and From Which Of This Oak isn't something I'd listen to more than once  :P
Title: Re: Agalloch Appreciation-thread
Post by: Zantera on November 23, 2010, 04:45:04 AM
I have only listened to "From Which of This Oak" and "Of Stone, Wind and Pillor" about 1 time each, and i didn't find it to be that special.
Some cool moments, some good songs, but overall it's more like "it's cool to have, but not something i'd listen to". :P

It's a hard choice which EP i prefer between the White and the Grey, but i'm leaning slightly towards the latter, mostly because i think the dismantled version of The Lodge is their best instrumental. :)

The Hawthorne Passage is amazing, but i hold The Lodge (dismantled) slightly higher.
The remixed version of Odal comes pretty high as well, mostly because it's so different from the original. (in a good way)  ;)

I just listened to Marrow of the Spirit for the first time and it was awesome. (It was my first Agalloch album too) Really great stuff! :tup

EDIT: There is a section near the end of "To Drown" that REALLY remains me of Requiem for a Dream...

Now that I've listened to the new album a bunch:

1)  The Watcher's Monolith
2)  Black Lake Nidstang
3)  Into the Painted Grey
4)  To Drown
5)  Ghost of the Midwinter Fires
6)  They Escaped the Weight of Darkness

1)  Ashes Against the Grain
2)  The Mantle
3)  Pale Folklore = Marrow of the Spirit (might prefer Pale Folklore just a tad; too close to call)
4)  The White
Title: Re: Agalloch Appreciation-thread
Post by: Zantera on December 04, 2010, 04:51:37 AM
Even though i love Marrow of the Spirit, i still think Ashes Against the Grain is unbeaten as my favorite Agalloch-album.
The negative thing i can say about MotS, is that after many plays, The Watchers Monolith and Into the Painted Grey still haven't clicked, and i'm not even sure if i could identify them.
But the last 3 songs are fantastic, so it's pretty awesome.  :hefdaddy
Title: Re: Agalloch Appreciation-thread
Post by: HarlequinForest on December 04, 2010, 06:49:09 AM
I think The Watcher's Monolith is the most familiar song on the album; it sounds like it could have been on The Mantle.  That's probably why I like it the most.  Ghost of the Midwinter Fires sounds a lot like it could have been on Pale Folklore.  Other than those two, I think all the songs have a sound that's pretty unique to this album.

But honestly, this entire album didn't completely click with me until I was ranking the songs in my earlier post and comparing them to the other albums.  When a new album comes out and I try to determine how much I like it, I always tend to isolate and ostracize it from the rest of the band's discography in my mind, and I don't know... I guess it just melded in with the other albums at the point, and I just realized how comparable in sound and quality it is.

Anyways, yeah, anytime I think I may like something more than AAtG, I listen to AAtG again and that idea goes out the door.  I really think it's the only album of any band that gives me an eargasm on every verse in the entire album.

Check out this one-man band The Fall of Every Season.  It sounds like Agalloch mixed with Opeth, and both the clean vocals and growls sound a lot like Mikael Akerfeldt.

I think To Drown is one of the best things they've ever done.

1. To Drown
2. Black Lake Nidstang
3. Into The Painted Grey
4. Ghosts of the Midwinter Fires
5. The Watcher's Monolith
6. They Escaped the Weight of Darkness

Ghosts of the Midwinter Fires and The Watcher's Monolith being both great songs but not as amazing as the top three, which would all be in my Agalloch top 15

8:39-9:21 on The Watcher's Monolith = biggest eargasm on the album.

The Mantle > Pale Folklore > Ashes Against The Grain > Marrow of The Spirit

Title: Re: Agalloch Appreciation-thread

I'd say my overall-ranking would be:

Ashes Against the Grain>The Mantle>Pale Folklore>Marrow of the Spirit

But the reason AAtG is number 1, is because i feel like i can listen to it at any moment, it fits every mood.
The Mantle can be just as good when i'm in the mood for it, and i really have to be, considering the majority of it is instrumental, and i really gotta be in a certain mood to appreciate it.
Pale Folklore is awesome as well, and can easily battle with the other 2 for my favorite spot. :P

With my new found tolerance of harsh vocals, I need an album recommendation. I tried them once with Ashes Against the Grain, but I did not like it because of the vox. Now, with their new album that everyone seems to be smileing all over, I was wondering if I should try that.

This and being on DTF does not compute.

On another note, I also gotta say Ashes.
It's not only my favorite, but very diverse with both clean and harsh vocals. The new album is mostly harsh, which I'm fine with, but probably not the best starting place.

One thing about the DVD though:
Needs more 'Fire above, Ice below'.

Listening to that now, SO good! :hefdaddy

The middle-part is probably amongst the best music ever written, by anyone.
The places that song takes me to...

I absolutely agree.  The ebow (I think) section is my personal favorite section of music ever; it just puts me in a state of euphoria.  I just listen to this song in the car driving through the snow, and I just smile because I'm so happy.  :p

Anyways, I was listening to Agalloch radio on last.fm and came across a band called Kauan.  I searched the name and found they were mentioned in this thread, so I thought I would just say that their album Luminkuuro is AMAZING.

yeah Aesop can be a bit sloppy live. Also not a huge fan of how he changes the drum parts of older songs (pre Marrow) live. But I'm sure if your AT a gig, that sort of thing doesn't matter much.

also, that girlfriend of yours is a keeper  ;)

That's exactly how it went though! They opened with Falling Snow and the second those kids heard the opening riff they started moshing. It's not really even that heavy of a song.

Still disappointed by Marrow... When they said in the interviews that they found AATG too mechanical/clean and wanted to return to their oldest material, I should have noticed. Oh well, some of it is still good, but it's nothing on AATG or Mantle.

Post by: Zantera on October 30, 2011, 04:13:01 AM
I somewhat agree on Marrow.
On one hand, I do love it, but when ranking the albums, it just ends up my least favorite Agalloch-album, I'd say mostly due to the production/sound, but just being slightly weaker.
It does have some great tunes, but Ashes Against the Grain remains my favorite, and Pale Folklore and The Mantle are pretty much even after that.
Title: Re: Agalloch Appreciation-thread
Post by: HarlequinForest on October 30, 2011, 05:18:39 AM
My opinion of MotS has dropped a bit since release.  There's several things I don't like it about, including 1) bad use of nature samples (the wind samples in PF were perfect and added greatly to the atmosphere; this album just sounds like they're playing over a nature sounds CD), 2) production is just kind of bland compared to their others and adds nothing to the atmosphere, 3) weak guitar tones, and 4) less compelling melodies in general.

Btw, I've kind of been falling in love with Hollow Stone lately.  So surreal and beautiful.
Title: Re: Agalloch Appreciation-thread

Yeah, they thought the guitar tone was too strong/mechanical on AATG, which is totally not true - that's what I loved about that album :(

absolutely. "Hawthorne" is one of the best compositions the band ever put together, i think. i especially love the 'nature's memory' recollection of "She Painted Fire Across the Skyline" in the middle, possibly more than the use of the "A Celebration for the Death of Man" theme across the album.

i'd put it, "In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion," and "Odal" in my top 5 Agalloch pieces (likely rounded out by "Scars of the Shattered Sky" and "Sowilo Rune").

With acclaimed engineer Billy Anderson at the helm, the band recorded a 20 minute long conceptual and colossal track live onto two-inch tape. Demonstration sucks unless you're a collector ("The Wilderness" and "This Old Cabin" are the only exclusives; they're good, but obviously not enough to have made Pale Folklore). The Compendium Archive is much, much better, but they only sold it on tour for some stupid reason.

Just came home from seeing Agalloch, really awesome concert. The opening band; Velnias didn't really impress me much. Could be that I haven't heard their stuff enough, but their music seemed to lack any "hook" or something to keep me interested, sadly I felt like they were a bit mediocre. But the tickets to the show were really cheap, so Agalloch alone made it totally worth it. Pretty epic venue, they played at an old prison across the street from the biggest cemetery in the city, something John pointed out, it was also their first time here in Sweden, so pretty epic venue to play for the first time. (I think they loved it)
They had to shorten their setlist a bit, probably due to time restraints, and they might have had minor technical difficulties, though it didn't show during the songs.
Setlist:

1. Into the Painted Grey
2. Falling Snow
3. The Watcher's Monolith
4. Limbs
5. Ghost of the Midwinter Fires
6. Bloodbirds
---Encores---
7. In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion
8. Kneel to the Cross

Looks similar to their US leg. I'm a little bummed they don't play the e-bow intro to Limbs, though. To me that build up to the actual song makes it incredible.

I was a bit surprised they didn't play the full intro either, but I guess when it's in the middle of the set it's "easier" or more logical to start a bit into the song. If they had played it as the first encore or something, then maybe the full intro would have been more effective. :P
But yeah, all in all the concert was really amazing. Wouldn't have complained if I had gotten one or two songs more, but hopefully they'll come back again.

Yeah, The Mantle would probably be a nice move. After that you have both Pale Folklore and Marrow of the Spirit. (both great albums)

Yes, though they didn't exactly look like the band I had envisioned. Pretty solid show, though. They covered almost all of their albums.

Post by: Zantera on June 03, 2012, 12:08:56 PM
Yeah I saw them back in April, amazing show. First time they came to Sweden. Negative side was a shortened set, they played 7 songs I believe, nothing from Pale Folklore, and Limbs without the full intro. But otherwise really amazing. Falling Snow and In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion enough made it epic.

Hi all. First post here ever.

Anyway, Agalloch are one of my favorite bands. In the studio, live, whatever - they're just awesome, so I'm happy beyond belief to see them getting recognition here on the official Dream Theater forum. "The Mantle" is literally my favorite album by any band ever, regardless of the fact that as bands, I would place bands like Porcupine Tree and DT (to give a couple examples) above Agalloch if forced to compare.

I have tickets to see them and will attempt at all costs to see them live in Brooklyn at Music Hall of Williamsburg (DMV-permitting that is - I meet the age requirement but need to get an ID card still), and I'm in all honesty just as psyched for that as I am for DT in Boston 10 days prior. First time for both bands and I'm sure my mind will be blown by both bands. The only thing I'm hoping for with the Agalloch show is that they don't cut "In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion" like they did for Maryland Deathfest. That song is just phenomenal, especially now that they apparently as of late 2011 include the slow, ambient middle section when they play it live every night. I'll admit I'm a new DT fan, no two ways around it, but in regards to their show, I really am hoping for a great variety of styles. Both Agalloch and DT, while completely different bands, can both be difficult to label as far as genres go, but what I meant by that is that I'm really hoping for songs like "The Spirit Carries On" and "Wither", in addition to songs in the style of "As I Am" :metal: and such. I won't complain regardless, as I feel incredibly blessed to be seeing two phenomenal bands in a span of 10 days (with a stop on Broadway to see The Book of Mormon in between), but I'm sure many of you understand what I mean in regards to wanting to hear certain songs and such.

Anyway, I got a bit sidetracked there, so I'm sorry. So....anyone have any more news on the Faustian Echoes EP? ;D

So maybe this kind of an odd question, but does anyone know of any bands that are lyrically similar to Agalloch and Wolves in the Throne Room? I ask because I really love the way they harmonize natural imagery with philosophical themes.

So what's the news with Faustian Echoes? How many songs? I ask because this article (https://legacy.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=175328) describes the EP as a "twenty minute mammoth epic" which leads me to believe it's a single long song.
Title: Re: Agalloch Appreciation-thread
Post by: Zantera on June 15, 2012, 01:06:10 AM
I haven't heard anything, but seeing how long the main song will be, I'd be surprised if it's more than that song. Maybe another song or two, as long as the playtime is below 30 mins. :P (or whatever the limit is for an EP)
Title: Re: Agalloch Appreciation-thread
Post by: Gadough on June 15, 2012, 01:32:25 AM
I don't think EPs have an actual time limit on either end...consider these examples.

Slayer - Eternal Pyre (1 song, 4:40, considered an EP)

Dream Theater - A Change of Seasons (57 minutes long, considered an EP)

I'm under the impression that labels can call anything an EP and get away with it, if it benefits them somehow. :p

Title: Re: Agalloch Appreciation-thread
Post by: Zantera on June 15, 2012, 01:35:25 AM
True, but in the case with Agalloch, their previous EP's have been 21 minutes (The Grey), 32 minutes (The White) and 28 minutes (Of Stone, Wind and Pillor) for example, so I'd guess that the new one is between 20-32 minutes as well. :P

Gallowbraid is about as close to a carbon copy as a band can get to Agalloch.  It's just one guy and it's really good if you can overlook the fact that he is trying to copy Agalloch exactly, even lyrically.  Check out Ashen Eidolon.

Cool, I just listened to Marrow of the Spirit for the first time all the way through. Hard to judge Agalloch albums on first listen, so I'm sure this will probably change, but it didn't make quite as good a first impression on me as the previous two.

Too true.  AAtG was my first Agalloch album, and I didn't care for it the first time I heard it.  The only reason I even continued to listen to it was because it was in the CD player in my car and I was too lazy to change the disc.  Now it's my favorite album of all time.

"Faustian Echoes" is one of my favourite Agalloch tracks. i like it more than "Black Lake Nidstang" (barring the amazing ambient part) in terms of lengthy suites, though nothing tops the opening pair of The Mantle, "She Painted Fire Across the Skyline," and also "Our Fortress is Burning." (i'd also include "Scars of the Shattered Sky," too!)

I'd say Faustian Echoes is probably their worst "epic". I mean, I still enjoy it, but I'd hold In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion, Black Lake Nidstång and the Our Fortress is Burning-trilogy much higher.

I love this band, and can never decide whether I like 'Ashes Against the Grain' or 'The Mantle' more.  I heard 'Ashes...' first and played it relentlessly after that and so it will always remain special.  'The Mantle', on the other hand, is just an enthralling and varied listen and I never feel like I am not in the mood for it. Awesome stuff.

Sup homies

So I just got into these guys thanks to Zantera, who submitted "Fire Above, Ice Below" in my roulette a few months ago. I just listened both to Ashes and the Mantle a couple of times each and I'm quite enjoying them. They remind me of two bands:

- Opeth, because I'm having the same feeling I got when I started listening to Opeth - that is, I'm not a big fan of the vocal style but the music is so good I keep coming back. Not a bad band to be compared to, Opeth is in my top 5 bands ever.
- Godspeed You! Black Emperor, because I also tend to drift away when I'm listening to them, but in a good way. I can't seem to stay focused exclusively on the music for long but I still get that feeling of having listened to an awesome album once it's done. It's kind of a weird feeling but I like it a lot.

Well, what can I say, another two albums to add to the ever-growing list of CDs I need to purchase.

Pale Folklore is also quite amazing, but it gets some slack for not being quite as polished as, say, The Mantle. it just needs remastering quite badly (and from someone who understands their music, so the correct dynamics can be created) — i did it myself, but i assume the band would rather analog mastering.
Title: Re: Agalloch Appreciation-thread
Post by: Buddyhunter1 on January 02, 2013, 05:33:02 PM
This is the same band that thought the production on Ashes sounded too good so they intentionally made the next album sound like shit by comparison.

Yeah, a remaster of Pale Folklore isn't gonna happen. I agree that it's a really great album, though.

The production on Pale Folklore sounds fine. It fits their sound and I wouldn't change it.

I don't think Marrow sounds bad, but I agree that Ashes has a really nice crystal clear-sound, and it's a bummer they abandoned it.

true, but i find "Faustian Echoes" really has the balance right. the guitars hack and slash, but the drums sound like enormous oak trees. perfect for Agalloch!

That's a perfect word to describe FE..."balanced". It's a really strong EP.

AGALLOCH TO RE-RELEASE PALE FOLKLORE ON VINYL:

With the participation of The End Records, AGALLOCH are excited to announce an official vinyl re-release of their debut album "Pale Folklore" on 180 gram white vinyl with completely redesigned gatefold packaging. Originally released on Profound Lore in 2005 in a very limited quantity, this album has never been officially released in Europe and is mostly unavailable outside the US. AGALLOCH will be selling most of the pressing of this LP release directly to fans throughout their month-long tour of Europe in April/May. The End has placed this release for pre-sale over at their webstore: https://www.theomegaorder.com/Agalloch. However, if anyone anticipates seeing us live in Europe we encourage you to purchase this release directly from the band, as the proceeds will help fund the tour.

I already ordered my copy! How about you guys?

Well, since I'm not a vinyl guy, I won't be getting this, but thanks for the bump, because you just reminded me that I only have Ashes and The Mantle - is their other material worth checking out? If so, what next?

I mean they only have four albums  so you don't have much to lose by listening to all of them.

Also Faustian Echoes and their White/Grey EPs are worth checking out.

So maybe this kind of an odd question, but does anyone know of any bands that are lyrically similar to Agalloch and Wolves in the Throne Room? I ask because I really love the way they harmonize natural imagery with philosophical themes.

Gallowbraid is about as close to a carbon copy as a band can get to Agalloch.  It's just one guy and it's really good if you can overlook the fact that he is trying to copy Agalloch exactly, even lyrically.  Check out Ashen Eidolon.
Finally checked Gallowbraid. Absolutely amazing stuff. Thanks so much for the rec!

Note to other Agalloch fans: Check out Gallowbraid. You won't be disappointed.

I guess you guys already know them but Alcest is another pretty cool band, though not an Agalloch carbon copy. Alcest is perhaps a tad more focused on atmosphere than metal while still employing plenty of guitars and shrieking. I don't know how to describe the diferences, just go listen to them.

Yeah, Alcest are amazing.  Their last two albums were both better than Marrow, imo.

Post by: Zantera on March 18, 2013, 10:51:41 AM
I haven't really compared them, but yeah.. Ecailles De Lunes and The Voyages of the Lame are both amazing. I do however feel like I gotta say something positive about Marrow, I think it's a superb album. I don't remember it getting negative reception when it came out, to me it feels like maybe the album faded fast for some people? Seeing/hearing songs from it live made it better somehow, and I really like it.

It's perhaps not Ashes/Mantle-quality, but that doesn't make it bad. I don't think anyone could expect Agalloch to top those two albums with a new album. If they do, awesome. But it will probably be stellar anyway. ;)

What I really like is that they manage to incorporate some sweet-ass guitar solos on this album (Dead Winter Days, I'm looking at you :heart) without ruining the mood of the songs - I hadn't thought that that would work as well, but they pull it off flawlessly.

Oh yes, the melancholy spirit is one of Agalloch's best. Pale Folklore is quite possibly my favorite thing agalloch has ever done but of course I love every single song/album by them.

Just came home from seeing them live, they put on an amazing show. Setlist was almost the same as the first time I saw them, back in 2011. Except this time it was almost an hour longer, so more songs added.
The setlist looked like this:

-Intro-
1. Limbs (Without the alarm-sounding guitars intro)
2. Ghosts of the Midwinter Fires
3. Falling Snow
4. Faustian Echoes (25 minute version, extended because one of the amplifiers was destroyed and they had to fix a new one during the song, so the other guys improvised)
5. The Melancholy Spirit
6. You Were But a Ghost in My Arms
7. In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion
8. Kneel to the  Cross (Sol Invictus Cover)
--Encore--
9. Our Fortress is Burning - I
10. Our Fortress is Burning - II: Bloodbirds
11. Our Fortress is Burning - III: The Grain

This was even better than the first time I saw them since the sound was better and they played a longer setlist. One of the best concerts I've been to, probably top5 or top3 for me. They put on a fantastic show, and everything from the burning incense part (that smoke smells great), to the over-the-top guitar drone of "The Grain" with loads of feedback, and just everything in between. The intro they play on the live shows is amazing as well, I love it how it just keeps building and everyone keeps joining in until it explodes, and this time fused into "Limbs".

The whole show consisted of highlights, but I gotta mention "Falling Snow" and "In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion". Two of my three favorite Agalloch songs, and every time I hear them, I just think "It can't get any better than this". They just rule so damn hard.  :hat Also, finally picked up Faustian Echoes on vinyl.

1. Limbs (Without the alarm-sounding guitars intro)

The no ebow guitar intro is disappointing. That part is absolutely essential. It's like when Metallica plays Battery without the acoustic intro.

Yeah I can get behind that. Still, it didn't really take away from the whole experience. They played it the same way the last time I saw them (in 2012), and it didn't come as a big of a surprise this time.

Title: Re: Agalloch Appreciation-thread
Post by: Buddyhunter1 on June 07, 2013, 09:50:21 AM
Cool. I'll wait for a few more people to confirm they would be interested, but in the meantime...

1: Would you guys rather I combine the different parts of "She Painted Fire Across The Skyline" and "Our Fortress Is Burning..." into one song, or leave them separate? I personally always viewed them both as one song, but if you guys would rather they be split up into three parts I would be fine with doing it that way instead.

2: In addition to their four LPs, I'd like to include EPs in the survivor as well. I'm thinking about giving Of Stone, Wind, A Pillor and The White their own survivors, since they have more songs, and combining the remaining EPs into one last survivor, since they barely have any tracks.

So, this "other EPs" survivor would include...
-The Death of Man (Version III)
-Tomorrow Will Never Come
-The Lodge (Dismantled)
-Odal (Nothing Remix)
-The Wolves Of Timberline
-Faustian Echoes

Is everyone fine with this? Did I forget any songs?
Title: Re: Agalloch Appreciation-thread

I do think the songs belong together in one way, but should be kept apart in a survivor. The EPs as well would be cool.  :hat

Post by: Scorpion on June 07, 2013, 10:50:38 AM
I'd prefer to have them as one track, 'cause I have no idea where which part of She Painted Fire... ends or begins.

Also, you should totally include Scars of the Shattered Sky (Our Fortress Has Burnt to the Ground).

Relistening the four albums has made me realise that Pale Folklore is the best thing that they have ever done. There are NO weak tracks at all there, and the strongest (She Painted Fire, The Misshapen Steed, Hallways of Enchanted Ebony, The Melancholy Spirit) sit comfortably with the best that Agalloch have ever written.

1. Pale Folklore
2. Ashes Against the Grain/The Mantle
4. Marrow of the Spirit

They are all amazing though. Each album contains at least one track that never fails to make me go "HOLY BALLS ON A STICK THIS IS GOOD" and then proceed to :metal :metal :metal

1c The Mantle
1d Marrow

This band is really amazing at what they do. It's true that you have to be in a specific mood to really appreciate the music but when everything clicks it's just magnificent. Things have been very quiet here, but I've been finalizing a few new songs for what will eventually be the 4th Sculptured album. However, my attention has mainly been given to the upcoming and fifth Agalloch album, as well as the upcoming Sol Invictus album that I guested as guitarist on. Once the Agalloch is finished I hope to dedicate the majority of my time to Sculptured. Thanks everyone for your interest!

Anyone here have suggestions for bands with a similar sound to Agalloch? I've looked a lot, but I always seem to run into the same problem, typical of music with Black Metal vocals it would seem, of poor production. I love love love Agalloch, but I don't think I'd be able to take their stuff for too long if it had such a muddled sound.

Sure, check out Orphaned land. Though while being a really great band, I wouldn't call them very similar to Agalloch.

I don't really have any suggestions, maybe the Agalloch last.fm artist profile has something. They usually have some pretty accurate recs in my experience.

In addition to the bands already mentioned that sound like Agalloch, I highly recommend Fen (I think they actually toured with Agalloch a while ago.)

I recently stumbled upon Agalloch through Youtube's suggestions, and I am absolutely stunned. I have bought "The Mantle" and "Ashes Against the Grain" - they are phenomenal. Great music for cold autumn and winter nights.

For some reason they remind me a bit of early Opeth (Orchid, Morningrise etc), perhaps that could be interesting to you, Senecadawg.

Sure, check out Orphaned land. Though while being a really great band, I wouldn't call them very similar to Agalloch.

Just citing some bands  :P

Opeth and Agalloch are two of my favorite bands, and they certainly have similarities, but I've found that I have to be in very different moods to listen to one over the other.

And while Morningrise is good, and Orchid decent, all of Agalloch's albums blow those away imo.

Perdition City and the most recent release Messe are both on par with Shadows of the Sun, and all better than Bergatt, I think.

I find it upsetting that, from the few interviews I've seen, the band was somewhat disappointed with AAtG. If I remember correctly John Haughm thought that it was too polished, and sought to push back against that texture when working on MotS. As much as I enjoy Marrow, I hope that trend doesn't continue on this next one.

Also, I find that to be a really intriguing title.

indeed, they seem to have a problem with how perfect it sounds (and it does, compared to other Agalloch albums). it definitely stands out in the discography but i think it's one of their strongest works, and i've really been getting into what i'd consider the two 'sleeper' tracks lately — mostly "Fire Above, Ice Below" (a song Haughm says 'got lost in translation,' so i can't imagine how amazing it was supposed to be!) though it also took me this long to fall for "Not Unlike the Waves," which is probably their Opethiest song ever.

anyway, Faustian Echoes is one of my most favourite things the band has done, so i can't imagine i'll be disappointed with The Serpent & The Sphere. it's getting the full preorder treatment for sure.

I'm kinda hoping they got the low-fi sound out of their system with Marrow Of The Spirit and Faustian Echoes. While it does create an interesting atmosphere, it would be nice if the new record sounded a bit less... crappy.

Though judging from what Haughm has said in the past, I wouldn't be surprised if that isn't the case.

Yeah, I've heard John say Ashes to be their worst album. Part of me wishes that they go back to a more folk metal style with the post-rock influences of The Mantle, probably their best album, but even now I find it hard to be believe they'll ever trump that masterpiece. Either way, I'm really excited for this one no matter what direction they take with it, cause it's fucking Agalloch. :metal

I don't think they disagree Ashes for the songs on it, after all they often play those songs live, so I assume their problem is with how it sounded. To me, it's their best album easily.

Ashes sounded terrific. John says what bothered him with it was how "polished" it sounded. Which I really don't have much of an issue with; it sounded gorgeous to me.

Ashes has a special place in my heart, but will never be quite as good as The Mantle for me.
Title: Re: Agalloch Appreciation-thread
Post by: Buddyhunter1 on February 01, 2014, 02:15:26 PM
I know it's purely subjective and all, but I fail to see how anyone could think that a record likes Ashes sounds terrible because the sound is "too polished"

I mean I know black metal isn't supposed to sound that clear and polished, but damn... :lol

i really love the production on Faustian Echoes. none of it sounds particularly 'crappy,' but it doesn't have gloss like AATG — a nice balance. my favourite part is how the drums sound like enormous, reverberating oak trees.

New track, listening to it right now. So far so good, particularly enjoying the production, it seems they have gone back to the mantle / aatg style with a cleaner, crisper production.

Definitely noticing this simply from the song titles. I can see there being a big thematic shift in the lyrics this time around, thought I'm still not sure of a big musical shift. After delving in the winter/folk theme for quite a while, I can understand if they wanted a change.

I'm mixed about that considering I feel they wrote their best and most emotional stuff in the heart of the winter/folk theme (The Mantle), but this has definitely got my interest.

Oh boy...this album just isn't doing much for me. I love Celestial Effigy and Astral Dialogue but the rest of the album just feels plodding and uninspired (can't believe I'm saying this about them) compared to the rest of their discography. The songs just don't feel like they go anywhere and the vocals don't stand out either. Easily my least favorite Agalloch album. That said, I'm really hoping it grows on me.

Title: Re: Agalloch Appreciation-thread
Post by: senecadawg2 on May 04, 2014, 11:56:24 PM
On first impressions alone, I definitely agree with Scorp. It's so dense though, and there's no way I'm going to try to rank it within the context of the rest of their work. Especially since every single one of their albums has grown on me over time. Astral Dialogue-Dark Matter Gods-Celestial Effigy is a great little run (as I think was mentioned in one of the past reviews posted here), Plateau of the Ages was fantastic, and the three connectors were all splendid (especially the closer). I'll have to give it another listen (or 20) tomorrow! Vales Beyond Dimension didn't do much for me the first time through, and the opening track is just a lot to swallow. My largest complaint, at this point, would probably be the lack of clean vocals. There have never been TOO many of them, but this album feels less dynamic for not having any.

Man is this album dense....it's going to take quite some time to digest.  I've listened to it twice and still barely have a grasp on it.

Though, I must say I'm slightly worried because there wasn't much in this album that immediately stuck out to me...a first for an Agalloch album.

It would help a lot to be able to read the lyrics. At least, that's always been an important part of listening to Agalloch's music for me.
Title: Re: Agalloch Appreciation-thread

Super dense, super awesome. I don't like the lack of clean vocals, maybe his voice is deteriorating and he didn't want to put any cleans that weren't "background" vocals on this album... maybe something like that.

I like this album. It's nothing fantastically new or amazing but it's not bad and I definitely enjoy more of the Agalloch sound. There are some brilliant moments as well, but it doesn't quite top the first three albums for me. Maybe about equal with Marrow.
Title: Re: Agalloch Appreciation-thread
Post by: senecadawg2 on May 08, 2014, 06:59:55 PM
I'm listening to it for the first time in a couple days. A few thoughts...

Heaviest Agalloch album ever? I'd say so. The production is also a big step up from MotS, but I can't say I enjoy it more than AAtG. While I do think it's starting to grow on me more, I'd be lying if I said it has wowed me thus far. There's just so much to dig through. It's encouraging, though, that it took so long for AAtG to click for me, and now it's likely my favorite album of all time. And I'm still really looking forward to sitting down with a physical copy and reading the lyrics, as I'm sure that will help. I'm surprised by how much I like Celestial Effigy right now, as I wasn't completely sold on it as a single. Perhaps it's just one of those songs that works significantly better within the context of the album. The vocals are superb, but I'm still a little disappointed by the lack of clean singing. I look forward to hearing how these songs play out in a live setting.

Picked the new album up today and just finished listening to it for the first time.

The first track, Dark Matter Gods, and Plateu of the Ages seemed to be the big highlights for me. Celestial Effigy is pretty good, too.
The Astral Dialogue and Values Beyond Dimension haven't clicked yet, and the acoustic interludes seem pretty pointless to me.

The Astral Dialogue is one of my favorites. The album is just beginning to click, and I love it. The first half is there already, but Vales and Plateau are taking a little longer.

I'm really digging the new album! I've never been a huge Agalloch fan but this one really does it for me, and I can't really explain why. Now I'm pumped to see them next week at Maryland Deathfest.

The album is probably my least favorite Agalloch so far. (After 3 listens)
But still,The Astral Dialogue is an amazing track. Might be my favorite metal track of the year so far. The album itself is probably a 7.5/10 from me.

It's not one of my favorites by them either, but it's still pretty awesome. It kinda sounds like a mix between MOTS and The Mantle, but it lacks the high points from either (though Plateau of the Ages could come pretty damn close).

And I know I've said this already, but the interlude tracks seem like a really lazy way of injecting some additional atmosphere, and they really bog down the flow of the album for me.

Elliot is a cool dude. I've been watching his reviews for a year or so, he seems great. Cool and unexpected to see him do a collaboration with Anthony. He is perhaps a bit too "positive" on the music he likes (most times he gives out 8 or 9s), but he is still young and I remember being very biased at his age, so nothing too weird.

so there are three unused 'serpentis' acoustic tracks — two as bonuses on the Japanese CD and one only on a 7". if you want the 7" and you're not attending a gig, you can message Anthem Records on Facebook with the text "Agalloch single" and he'll give you payment info. limited to 500, but it's also a 2:26 acoustic track, so...

Although I'm fairly disappointed with the album, I've gotta say the lyrics are as fantastic as ever.

Yeah, the lyrics are incredible. But, they're probably not the most immediately striking from Agalloch imo. I think I prefer the more nature-themed lyrics of The Mantle.

Short, but interesting interview with John Haughm. https://heavymetal.about.com/od/interviews/fl/Agalloch-Interview.htm (https://heavymetal.about.com/od/interviews/fl/Agalloch-Interview.htm)

Also "Vales Beyond Dimensions" is amazing, one of the best songs on the album.

Thanks for sharing that interview. I especially liked this bit:

Quote
Basically it has a lot to do with microcosms and macrocosms and how they are a mirror reflection of each other. How our existence in the universe is so astronomically minute and pathetic in the vastness of space and time but at the same time, an entire micro-universe exists within us that is equally vast and complex. So the songs are based on these theories and ideas.

I've been listening to the album a lot more, recently. It's growing on me with each additional listen, as I am able to more easily distinguish and dissect the differences between individual tracks. Also, as I suspected, reading through the lyrics while listening has helped a lot. One thing that sticks out to me is just how consistent of an album this is; every song brings something worthwhile to the complete work, and there are no bad moments. On the flip side of that, there aren't many really astonishing moments either (at least, not yet for me), but I'm still optimistic that those will come. The consistency is a testament to the maturity of their songwriting  :tup

Preliminary rankings would probably look a bit like this…

1a Dark Matter Gods
1b The Astral Dialogue
1c Celestial Effigy
The more I listen to this section of the album, the more I appreciate the sequence of the above three tracks. They fit so well together, and after a while I've come to the conclusion that they might as well be considered three movements of a single, larger, song. Individually, they are all fantastic in their own way. I looove the guitar work throughout, looove Haughm's delivery (particularly in Dark Matter Gods), and looove the lyrics (a running theme throughout the album). Yum yum yum!
4. Plateau of the Ages- There is no doubt in my mind that this piece will grow on me a lot, and perhaps end up being my favorite song on the album. Right now it's still a little unfamiliar, and there's a lot there for me to digest. Part of my difficulty in digesting it can likely be attributed to its diversity, which is a big plus. I also suspect that this one will be amazing to hear live, assuming they play it (it's got encore written all over it, in the same vein as Our Fortress is Burning, imo).
5. Birth And Death of the Pillars of Creation- This one has really grown on me. Great build up, excellent lyrics, and really interesting (and heavy) textures.
6. Vales Beyond Dimension- I wish I could agree with you, adace, but this one hasn't quite clicked for me. I don't know what it is- maybe that the first couple minutes sound a little doomy to my ears (or imagination), and I'm not a big fan of doom. It picks up after that though, around the same time that the tremolo picking kicks in, and the lyrics are also astonishingly great.

I omitted the three acoustic interludes, as I don't see them as stand-alones. They're very good breathers, but that's about it.

Not a bad song on the album :heart

The more I listen to this album, the less I understand the criticism for it. My ONLY complaint is that the three acoustic interlude-songs sound kinda "samey". They could have thrown in some more instrumentation in those songs, and maybe had only one or two (instead of three), but the "real" songs on the album are just as good as I would expect from Agalloch.

It might not be one of their best albums, but it's still on the same level as the others IMO.
Title: Re: Agalloch Appreciation-thread
Post by: senecadawg2 on May 24, 2014, 08:55:39 AM
Agreed on the sameyness of the acoustic songs.

As for it's place among the rest of their albums, I'd say its sitting pretty at about the same level as MotS.

1: Plateau Of The Ages
2: Dark Matter Gods

3: Celestial Effigy
4: Birth And Death Of The Pillars Of Creation
5: The Astral Dialogue

6: Values Beyond Dimension
7-9: The interludes

The middle tier is all extremely close, so I could see those shifting around a lot.

Bumpin this bitch to make a public service announcement:

Agalloch never fails to impress. Perhaps the only band/artist that I can honestly say has never let me down. Serpent and the Sphere gets better and better with each listen. In a way it feels like a slight backlash against MotS. Whereas that was more wandering and spacious, this feels like a more focused and coherent album. It also feels a little more restrained, but not necessarily in a bad way. I enjoy both albums a lot, just in different ways. This album is also incredibly consistent.

It's interesting the way each album seems to respond to the one before it. AAtG has been described as getting back to their roots after the more experiMantle, and then MotS's production was a little more raw in response to the polished feel of AAtG. Now this one feels quite different than Marrow. Their sound continues to evolve but they've never really pinned it and tried to repeat. Of course you hear elements of the prior albums in SatS, particularly Pale Folklore imo, but it's still a new sound. Evolution of a language to come, some might say.

I haven't listened to it in a few weeks now, but I might take it for a spin during the weekend or something. It's another very good release from them. I haven't listened or had any big interest in spinning Agalloch so far this year, but that shouldn't say too much, because they are still one of my main go-to autumn/winter bands. I rarely think "Its a hot summer day, lets listen to Agalloch!" so to speak. It's almost a bummer that they released it in May instead of the autumn, but I would imagine that this is the kind of album I will keep coming back to. With several of their albums (Marrow especially), it took me a while before I fully loved all of it. I see this being something similar.

Nice coincidence to see you here, I was just doing some cleanup in my Excel sheets and out of curiosity I opened the one I used for my roulette a couple of years ago. I saw that it was you who sent me some Agalloch (Fire Above, Ice Below) and that I didn't really rate it that highly - I gave it a seven.

Two years later, all I can say is that the Mantle and Ashes are two of my top 10 albums ever, so THANK YOU  :heart

I haven't had much time lately so I haven't bought the last one yet but I intend to. I listened to it a couple of times in the online stream and it seemed interesting, though I really don't dare to rate an Agalloch album so early. If the previous efforts are any indication, it will take quite a bit to click (and hopefully I will end up loving it too). Definitely agree on the release date though, Agalloch fits a lot better during autumn or winter than summer.

I'll refrain from posting the setlist since it's easily found online and at least one other person is going to see them this tour and may not want to have the setlist spoiled.

I will say though that I didn't particularly like the opening band, and that I wish the vocals had been a bit higher in the mix. The rest of the experience was fabulous though. Unlike any concert I've ever been to (apart from the first time I saw them lol). The smoke, the incense, the stage presence (especially Anderson's)... Man oh man what a treat.

I hope you enjoy Buddyhunter, and let us know what you think afterwards!

I saw them in Philly a few days ago.  I was seriously impressed.  Most notably the quality and clarity of the show was amazing; I could make out all the fine details and intricacies in most songs. Like senecadawg said, the stage presence was great, and Don Anderson in particular was a lot of fun.

My only complaint was that the show didn't start until 9:00....with two opening bands I didn't get out of the venue until almost 1:00am. Also wasn't the biggest fan of the opener (the psychedelic, spacey, doom metal-esque band with the female vocals).

Overall a great show, great experience....I'm glad I went and will definitely try to make it the next time them come around.

My favorite metal band these past couple years, I can't believe it!  :sadpanda: :( :'(

I know John in particular has been increasingly interested in his solo work and other projects, but I'm still shocked. The second time I saw Agalloch was easily one of the best concerts I've been to and the first was a phenomenal experience as well. So much so that these past couple months I've been periodically checking for a new tour announcement. In fact, when I saw this thread bumped, I thought that's exactly what this was. Unbelievable...

After being inundated by a barrage of responses, I feel that I should clarify some things. I take full responsibility for the decision to part ways with the other guys. It was difficult, well thought-out, and something that had been culminating over the past couple of years. I simply could not continue any further with the band as it was. I had to make a change as my motivation and inspiration had started to completely deteriorate. Whether this is the permanent end of Agalloch altogether or a possible fresh start, I don't know. I probably won't know for awhile. The band has simply been reduced back to its founding, visionary member for the first time in 20 years. Beyond that, the future is unknown.

This sucks. These guys have released some of my favorite albums and it's depressing as hell there won't be any more, especially since I was only able to see them live once. It's also kind of a shame that they went out on (in my opinion) their worst album, though with the news of this breakup maybe sheds some light on why that album felt kind of uninspired to me.

See, I found Marrow of the Spirit the least inspired. Nothing special really happens until "Black Lake Niðstang" comes into the picture. The songs prior are boring, typical, and expected.

Meanwhile, Serpent & the Sphere opens with one of the most atypical Agalloch songs, followed by a White EP-style number, then into three typical but excellent pieces. It's only really the last half that's boring, but "Vales Beyond Dimension" has really become a highlight to me (it was weakest at first imo), so it's just the extended amount of "serpens" tracks and "Plateau of the Ages" that bore me.

I guess my ultimate point is that half of Marrow and half of Serpent make one amazing record. The decline has been ongoing.

Marrow Of The Spirit has actually grown on me exponentially since the first time I heard it to the point where it's practically tied with The Mantle as my second favorite album from them. I just love how thick and dense the atmosphere is on that record, and that's what I thought The Serpent was lacking the most.

Yeah it really is a shame this band split up because they were easily one of my favorite metal bands. Ashes Against the Grain remains one of my all time favorites, The Mantle is not far behind and the rest of their discography is really strong too. I mean Pale Folklore and Marrow of the Spirit are both really good too and The Serpent and the Sphere, while their weakest IMO was still great.

I'm in the minority that really doesn't like anything before Ashes Against The Grain. The production and composition style just isn't my cup of tea, however, Ashes is in my top 10 albums of all time. It is a brilliant work of art. I also like the two albums they put out after that, Marrow of the Spirit and The Serpent & The Sphere, but they're nowhere as good as Ashes. Glad you're digging them. Ashes is definitely their best. Marrow Of The Spirit is my second favorite. That album took a while to grow on me, but damn, the atmosphere on that record is unreal. Even the murkier production, which I disliked at first, ended up being a positive for me because it really enhances the atmosphere. Plus you've got songs like Into The Painted Grey, Black Lake Nidstang, and Ghosts of the Midwinter Fires which are all fantastic.

The Mantle is behind those two. The Shadow Of Our Pale Companion might be their best song (though I might instead give the nod to the first two parts of Our Fortress Is Burning) but as a whole I don't think it's as strong as the above two records. Then you've got Pale Folklore, which is a bit rough around the edges but still quite good, and finally the Serpent And The Sphere, which is unfortunately their weakest. Really would have liked them to go out on a higher note.

That's cool you are liking Ashes Against the Grain. That is in my top 5 albums of all time. I cant remember if I sent you Pillorian in your roulette, but that is John Haughm's band after Agalloch split up. They only had 1 album, but it is very Agalloch-like. Bumping the shit out of this because I'm loving this band.  I was sent Falling Snow by Mason in my first roulette and it scored well but I needed to warm to it.  I had an urge a couple of months ago to listen to it and I've fallen in love with that song.

Have been spinning Ashes and The Mantle and this band is fucking unreal.  The Mantle which I only have listened to twice is brilliant.

Kade, following up since you posted.

So far I have listened to The Mantle and Ashes Against The Grain.

Both albums are really cool. I probably prefer Ashes. It just feels like it has a bit more jump.

Even though it's cool and moody, this will take a number of listens to really click though. The remind me of classic Fields Of The Nephilim.
That's cool you are liking Ashes Against the Grain. That is in my top 5 albums of all time. I cant remember if I sent you Pillorian in your roulette, but that is John Haughm's band after Agalloch split up. They only had 1 album, but it is very Agalloch-like. Khorada is the band that the other 3 guys in Agalloch went on to form. That album is a bit of a mixed bag, though.

Cool. Thank you for the info.

Yes you did send Pillorian. By The Light Of A Black Sun. I scored it a 9, so I must have liked it.  I have a document with what everyone sent me, and I will be working my way through it.

Like I said, I feel they will take multiple listens to click, so I'll give Agalloch a solid shake this week.

Cool that youre enjoying it, Tim.

I think i remember the guys mentioning being fans of Nephilim in an interview at one point, so it makes good sense.

Cool mate.  They are the only two I've checked out still.  Falling Snow is easily the best song from both albums but I think I'm preferring The Mantle on a whole.

For longtime fans, it's a concept album no? A few recurring themes and similar feel throughout really tickles my fancy.

Instead of hijacking the Album thread, I thought I'd post here. The above posts are interesting. My memory is so bad. :lol :lol

I was going to say that the verses in Falling snow sound like Tribulation. I love that driving drum beat.

I haven't really gone out to sought out anything either truthfully.  Agalloch and their sound were just so amazing and unique.

Embodiment from 2008 is a classic.

I pretty much find it as good as anything Agalloch ever did.

The only project that was good, post-Agalloch, was Pillorian, but that crashed and burned after just 1 album.

I don't think I've ever been more turned off by a mix of vocals + lyrics than here. I had to turn it off less than halfway through, just unbearable. It's a damn shame because Agalloch is probably in my top 3 bands ever and Ashes Against the Grain might be my favorite album, I was kinda hopeful I could enjoy this.

Part of what makes Sculptured unique is what I read on 1 of the reviews on rym.

Quote
First off, this is different. No matter who comes to mind when you hear the words "death metal" or "progressive metal", this doesn't quite sound like them. And this is definitely nothing like Agalloch, thank goodness - I adore Agalloch, but there's nothing worse than musicians who get involved in side projects just to make the same music. I am thankful that the members of Agalloch use Sculptured to explore types of music that do not fit within Agalloch's stylistic bounds.

The vocals are nothing like your Black Metal shrieks nor your operatic style clean singing from the you name it...Andre Matos or Jimmy Gnecco.

To me the vocals FIT THE MUSIC most importantly.

Also 1 of the comments on YouTube was saying the new track was a MONO mix, so that may have something to do with the quality. I honestly wasn't bothered by it, but I only listened to it once. Did the vocals blow me away? no. Did I find it awful? no. I guess I found it like most of their other music, it fit the music well enough. But I certainly mean to listen to it more to be more confident about it and the new record.

In case anyone needs to clean their ears out after that- this is sweet. Hailing from MN myself and knowing him personally, I might be biased, but Austin Lunn (Panopticon) is one of the best things going in this sub-genre of metal…maybe all of metal for that matter.

He also co-owns Hammerheart Brewery in MN - a Scandinavian black/folk metal themed brewery which is actually one of the coolest things ever. A few years back they brewed a small batch of beer in honor of Agalloch called “Serpensblod” and it was available for the Agalloch show when they came by.

Agalloch has reunited for some "limited shows".

Will this lead to anything more? Not betting on it, but... man I hope so.

This is the news I've been waiting for. I don't know where I heard the interview, but they teased that something in the near future would make Agalloch fans happy. I'm not holding my breath hoping for a full reunion and a new album, but hopefully the "handful of limited shows" includes something within a few hours of North Carolina.

And hell, why not? It's probably foolish of me to hope, but I wouldn't rule out a more permanent reunion either. It's not like they've been tearing it up since Agalloch disbanded. I wouldn't be surprised if some time apart hasn't changed their thinking somewhat.

Man…this is tough for me

John Haughm made such an ass of himself after Agalloch- usually I can separate the person from the art but for whatever reason, it’s really tough for me in this case, probably because I was so passionate about the band before everything went down.

This interview with Don Anderson made it easier for me: https://www.decibelmagazine.com/2020/01/21/former-agalloch-guitarist-don-anderson-on-the-white-the-grey-reissues-repairing-his-relationship-with-john-haughm-and-a-live-performance-video-with-panopticons-austin-lunn/

If his bandmates have condemned him, confronted him, hashed things out with him, and ultimately forgiven him, that's probably as good an indication as any that he's actually grown and changed.

This.

Yes John made a complete ass of himself in the years after Agalloch disbanded, but people can and do change for the better all the time. Has he actually changed? I don't know, I've never met him before. All we have to go on is what is bandmates and close associates say. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

I'm a pretty staunch believer in the idea that artists' works can and often do transcend who they are as people. Once they've gone beyond a certain line I won't want to support them financially anymore, but frankly, I don't see JH as having crossed that line yet.
