Things have been very quiet here, but I've been finalizing a few new songs for what will eventually be the 4th Sculptured album. However, my attention has mainly been given to the upcoming and fifth Agalloch album, as well as the upcoming Sol Invictus album that I guested as guitarist on. Once the Agalloch is finished I hope to dedicate the majority of my time to Sculptured. Thanks everyone for your interest!

2014 should be a great year in music. New Agalloch, new Anathema, new David Gray, new Tool (but probably not), new Seventh Wonder.

Anyone here have suggestions for bands with a similar sound to Agalloch? I've looked a lot, but I always seem to run into the same problem, typical of music with Black Metal vocals it would seem, of poor production. I love love love Agalloch, but I don't think I'd be able to take their stuff for too long if it had such a muddled sound.

Sure, check out Orphaned land. Though while being a really great band, I wouldn't call them very similar to Agalloch.

I don't really have any suggestions, maybe the Agalloch last.fm artist profile has something. They usually have some pretty accurate recs in my experience.

I only listen to electro-post dubprog.  You've probably never heard of it.

Yeah, I wouldn't say Orphaned Land are all that close to Agalloch, sound-wise, at all. Good band though.

I'll second Primordial. Great band and their later stuff sounds very good.

Also, give Altar of Plagues Mammal a try too.

yeah, I'm familiar with that one, but rarely listen to it because it's so grating on my ears.

Also familiar with them, but theres hardly any material to listen to. They really ought to release a full album for me  :P

agreed

I'll give Primordial a try. Also, I'm curious... any thoughts around here on Negura Bunget?

I gave it a listen yesterday and it really surprised me. I've heard a lot about them, but never took the time to give om a full listen. A lot to swallow, to say the least.

Curious. What don't you like about Bergtatt? I never thought the production was sub-par, even for that style of music.

It's not nearly as bad as most of the black metal albums released during that era, but the production still bothers me considerably. It's muddy, or something like muddy.

I love Bergtatt! It might just be one of my Top 3 Ulver albums, and I can't find anything wrong with the production either. But then I've never been really picky about that, so take that with a grain of salt.

In addition to the bands already mentioned that sound like Agalloch, I highly recommend Fen (I think they actually toured with Agalloch a while ago.)

I recently stumbled upon Agalloch through Youtube's suggestions, and I am absolutely stunned. I have bought "The Mantle" and "Ashes Against the Grain" - they are phenomenal. Great music for cold autumn and winter nights.

For some reason they remind me a bit of early Opeth (Orchid, Morningrise etc), perhaps that could be interesting to you, Senecadawg.

10 years ago, people pretty much couldn't avoid comparing them to Opeth.

Opeth and Agalloch are two of my favorite bands, and they certainly have similarities, but I've found that I have to be in very different moods to listen to one over the other.

And while Morningrise is good, and Orchid decent, all of Agalloch's albums blow those away imo.

Overall I would say the best stuff by Agalloch blows the best stuff by Opeth away.

Yeah, Bergtatt is my favorite Ulver album. I like Shadows of the Sun a lot als but never had time to check any of their other albums out. I should do that.

Perdition City and the most recent release Messe are both on par with Shadows of the Sun, and all better than Bergatt, I think.
