VMadera's first roulette
Alright, I guess it’s time for me to run a roulette. I participated in enough of them, it’s time to see what it’s like on the other side. I will try my best to keep the roulette to 1 round every 1-2 weeks. I'll follow the usual format of hangman, first impressions, results, except for the playoff rounds.
FormatThis will be an 8 round roulette with eliminations after round 5. The first 5 rounds will have “soft themes”, meaning that it will be open to interpretation as to what it means to you. Depending on the number of participants, rounds 6-8 will be playoffs style, head-to-head matches based on rankings. Only the top 8 will move on to the playoffs. If there are enough participants, additional players will move on to the playoffs and an additional round will take place before the quarter finals.
- Round 1 - Summer song: Do you have summer song? let's hear it. That song that makes you want to speed down a highway with the windows down, or sit by the ocean with a drink in hand, or sit on your backyard while the grill is going.
- Round 2 - Heavy: Not necessarily sound wise, but your choice.
- Round 3 - Simplistic: Single instruments, easy to follow harmonies, repetitive phrases. Whatever simplistic means to you.
- Round 4 - Pre-90’s: Anything that was released in 1989 or before.
- Round 5 - Sad/emotional song: Self explanatory
Playoff- Quarter Finals - Non-rock/metal (2 songs, 20 minutes max. Homecourt advantage +5 minutes)
- Semi-Finals - Suite (25 minutes max. Homecourt advantage +10 minutes)
- Finals - Full Album (Single disc. Homecourt advantage can send a double album)
TasteMy taste is kind of difficult to define. In reality, I’m not picky about genre or style, as long as the music feels original and interesting. There are plenty of artists outside of rock and metal that I enjoy. However, the safest route would be heavy guitars with clean vocals. Vocals are the last thing I pay attention to in a song. To me, it is more important to have interesting instrumentation and melodies (It’s been pointed out a few times that the songs I sent in other roulettes have weak vocals, which I agree, I just don’t pay much attention to them). With that said, vocals sometimes detract a lot from a song if they are very distracting (Amorphis harsh vocals, for example).
To give an idea, when it comes to harsh vocals, I enjoy bands like Gojira, All That Remains, In Flames, Machine Head, Rivers of Nihil, Amon Amarth and Trivium, to name a few. Bands that I find their harsh vocals distracting: Amorphis, Meshuggah, Slaughter To Prevail and Suicide Silence. Just some examples.
But please, don’t feel like you need to stick to the usual prog/metal. As I mentioned, I’m not picky about genre or style. I enjoy classical, modern classical, fusion, pop, the occasional hip hop song, piano solos, flamenco (or other acoustic guitar solo music), reggae, electronic, blah blah, you get the idea. Anything goes. I even played guitar in a Klezmer band while in college (not that I listen to Klezmer, but I can appreciate it). If the music has interesting elements, that’s all that matters.
RulesScoring- Songs will be scored on a rank basis (Similar to Lonestar’s roulette). Worst song for the round gets 1 point, Second worst 2 points, and so on. The scores will be used for seeding purposes only. Once we reach the playoffs, it will be a head-to-head match with no scores, only a winner and a loser.
Songs - Submit 1 song. I hold the right to refuse any submission if I previously heard the song, or if I am familiar with enough work from the artist.
Submitting - Please send me a PM with the artist and song name. I use YouTube music, so if you want to ensure I listen to the correct version, please send a YouTube or YouTube music link. If the track is not on YouTube let me know where I can listen to it. If you rather share a file, feel free to send it through email.
Time Limit - For the first 5 rounds, the time limit is 10 minutes. Time limit for the playoffs was noted for each round.
TAC’s Wildcard rule - You get one (1) wildcard to use in any of the first 5 rounds. The wildcard gives you the option to send 2 songs from one artist, instead of 1. I will listen to both songs before starting the round, then select the best of the two for the round. If you do not use your wildcard by round 5, you forfeit it and it cannot be used during the playoffs. Use it wisely.
Playoffs Home Court Advantage - I'm playing around with the idea of having a "Home court advantage" for the playoff rounds. Something that gives the higher seeded players an option, such as a higher time limit. I'll determine that as we make it to the first round of the playoffs.
I think that covers it all. I'll leave sign ups open through the weekend.
