25. Keith Moon I think this maniac will be picked
24. Dirty chance he'll make it
23. Pretty sure you'd say "who"?
22. I miss this guy.  Wish he was still with us.  Not gonna make it here. :'(
21. This weirdo won't make it.  40 years and 14 studio albums with the same original quartet+.  Impressive stuff.
20. Carter Beauford A unique cat whose style is highly revered in drumming circles.  Not sure here though.
19. Larz Huge name.  Guaranteed pick.
18. Spicy lefty.  He has a shot.
17. Martin Lopez  In 2005, a no-brainer to be on here.  Today.  Maybe?
16. Probably won't be here.  It's a crime.
15. 100% this monster's here.
14. Alex Van Halen  Brother of a legend on one of our other lists.  Won't be surprised if he makes this list.
13. Groove metal master.  Won't make the list though.
12. Another real cool cat.  A rock player with a huge jazz background.  I'm gonna say he won't be named here.
11. Stewart Copeland Classic rocker who's very likely.
10. Blake Richardson Also very likely but not a classic rocker.
9. Liked him before, but since the band's 3rd release in 93 I have loved his playing.  Not going to make the list.
8. He started further down my list.  But the more I thought about it, his talent and style make him absolutely unique.  Probably.
7. This forum?  Of course.
6. Nick D'Virgilio Prog dude.  Pretty sure he'll be here.
5. Brann Dailor Not sure on him.  Highly respected, but not sure how well his name is known outside the drumming community.
4. Second one on my list who's known by a nickname.  (My first draft had three).  Not going to be named here.
3. Ringo For sure.  Legend
2. I've thought mostly highly and sometimes low of this guy.  He's still my number 2 basher though.
1. The master

28. Phil Collins
29. Dave Lombardo
42. Bill Ward

10/18

Didn't list either.  Collins was close.  Both for Genesis and solo.  And Bruford, I probably should have considered higher as I really like the Yes and KC stuff.

I had NDV at 12, and Brann at 20.  Nick can step into any musical situation and sound like he's been there for his whole career.  He's the best blend of chops and feel since Phil Collins, and he's a killer singer as well!  Plus, he's a co-worker of mine at Sweetwater, so it's fun to name drop him when I can.

Do you know Nick Rice?  He always handles my orders for me.

Top 25 Producers Countdown next?

That would be a trainwreck, because artists who produce their own music are technically producers as well, so you'd likely see many favorite artists being listed simply because they produced some or all of their own music.

"Producer" might be the most nebulous concept in the process of music making.  It's everything from the guy who knows what every button and switch in the control room does and has the visionary genius to turn a mediocre band into a legendary act, to someone who just sits in on a meeting about the album and offers one suggestion.

Getting to the end!

7 - Marco Minnemann
Appeared on 17 of 29 lists
Highest Finish: 1 (devieira73)
7 Top 10 Finishes

The most misspelled drummer on the list, over half of the lists had his name wrong :lol

That said he was 15 on my list. He is crazy good and I love his work in The Aristocrats and his brief stint with Steven Wilson. I often wonder how DT would sound he got the gig instead of Mangini.

8 - Nicko McBrain
Appeared on 15 of 29 lists
Highest Finish: 3 (Mladen)
8 Top 10 Finishes

Not really a Maiden fan so he didn't make the cut for me sadly

Had Marco Minnemann at 14. Such a beast of a player.
Yeah I rooted for him during the DT auditions.
His playing with Steven Wilson is great.

Not really a Maiden fan so Nicko was not ranked in my top 25.

Going to see my nr 2 tonight... pretty sure now that he will not show up in the remaining spots. Too bad...

24  no way
23  Phil Collins - probably
22  no chance
21  slight possibility
20  Stewart Copeland  - possible
19  slight possibility

Yesterday I said that I was 99% confident about who 7 of the last 8 will be, but blanking out on the last.  Truth be told, I had a few on the brain as being possibilities to be the 8th, and Minnemann was one of them, so there it is.  I figured McBrain was a no-brainer.

I didn't rank either.  While Minnemann is a beast on those records with SW, I don't listen to any other album on which he plays (I have the one with Levin and Rudess, but I never revisit it).  McBrain is very good, but, like with Judas Priest, I never come away from a Maiden song thinking, "Damn, that drummer is awesome."

I had Nicko but had him lower than his predecessor who I assume by now is not making the list . . .

Nicko was 23 for me.  Showman with the chops. Constant, and steady in a sea of music.

Marco was #6.  He can play something so beautiful is a complex song that makes you replay to hear all his little nuances.

I have Minnemann at 16, and that’s mainly on the strength of his work in McStine & Minnemann. He’s just a powerhouse with amazing groove and speed but still very melodic.  I think I first saw/heard him with Paul Gilbert, and then I remember wanting him to be the DT gig (even though it was obvious who would get it). I do think that would have opened up more interesting musical possibilities, but I’m sure Mangini was the better all around fit at the end of the day. I wasn’t sure he would finish this high, but he was one I suspected might sneak in. Still have at least 3 locks remaining, but that’s probably it.

I also figured someone from Maiden would be in the last 8, so not surprised to see McBrain here. I’m sure he’s great, just not someone I listen to ever.

25. Should be top 10 but won't cause y'all suck
24. A real reach for favorite but whatever, won't make the list anyway
23. Obvious choice. (Alex Van Halen)
22. Won't be surprised either way with this one
21. Probably gonna make the final list? Maybe?
20. Will definitely make the list
19. Not a chance, but should be if we're including metal drummers
18. Probably not, but who knows?
17. Not a chance, but an early influence on my rock/metal groove style
16. Not a chance in hell and that's fine
15. No way Jose.
14. Higher chance that Stadler votes for Hillary
13. Obviously will make collective top 5.
12. Maybe? Out of touch with forum on this stuff
11. Not gonna happen
10. Probably will make the final list
9. Lock for top 20 (Marco Miniman)
8. It's a crime this guy is so unknown and therefore won't make the list
7. Nah, cause liking his band used to mean you got made fun of
6. Possible? But unlikely.
5. This is the collective forum's favorite drummer.....to poop on! (Lars Ulrich)
4. Better be in the top 10. BETTER BE!
3. Kev won't be voting for this guy, but I imagine he'll rank high
2. Too obvious
1. Also super obviously in the top 5.

Had Marco at 9. Not a drummer I listen to a lot of bands from, but I see a lot of his playing on youtube and the like and the dude always blows me away.

Nicko isn't a surprise but didn't rank for me. Not the biggest Maiden fan and his drumming never really stood out to me.

Minnemann is #15 on mine.  He's been all over the place, and I also wish he had gotten the DT gig instead of Mangini.  The list of players who can convincingly work with Necrophagist, Steven Wilson, Tony MacAlpine, and Nena can't be very large.

McBrain is on my honorables.  I'm not nearly the Maiden fan many here are, but his playing and kit sound on BNW is so crisp.

For today's drummers, I had Minnemann at 18 and Nicko in my honorable mentions.  I got to see Minnemann live with SW on the Raven tour, and he was outstanding.  I'm also a big fan of his McStine-Minnemann project.  Super talented dude.

Nicko is an inspiring guy.  I love his attitude towards his work.  Talk about a guy who loves what he's doing!!  He's a really solid drummer, and I think he's the linchpin in Iron Maiden, both behind the kit and away from the kit.

1/2

Minneman is an unbelievable talent, probably a top 3 of drummers I've seen live. Seen him with Steven Wilson, The Aristocrats, and In Continuum, and he left a crowd of jaws on the floor every time.

McBrain I didn't have, but he was the #8 of my predicted final 8 from a few posts ago, If my calculations are correct, I should have the final 6.

25- Alex Van Halen Should be there
24- Nope
23- Mayyybeee
22- Definitely not, and a damn shame too
21- Lock
20- Should make the list
19- Lock
18- They'd be on everyone's list if they heard them
17- Blake Richardson (Yeah)
16- Probably
15- Bill Bruford (Lock)
14- Might make it, definitely worthy
13- Unfortunately no
12- Lock
11- Another unfortunately no
10- Lock
9- Not too sure...we'll see
8- Lock
7- Lock
6- No, and I hate you all that they won't make it
5- Marco Minneman (Lock)
4- See #6, multiply by 1000
3- Keith Moon(Yeah)
2- Lock
1- Lock

25   Bill Bruford (Reasonable chance, depending.)
24   No chance in hell; there are other drummers IN HIS BAND that might, though.
23   He's either going to be in someone's top ten or not on the list, so probably won't make the final.
22   No chance. I might take some crap for this one.
21   No chance; most people won't know who he is.
20   No chance.
19   No chance (part of what will possibly be the only "father/son" pair on anyone's list)
18   No chance, due to this band being a pariah around here.
17   60-40 he makes it.
16   Probably no chance, but a crying shame.  The man is a mule.
15.   Slim chance; he is arguably my vote for best drummer in his genre, though there's another guy that gets all the press.
14   One of three guys from a certain band to make my list; probably won't make the final.
13   Keith Moon (90% lock)
12   100% lock
11   Slim chance; the other guy who replaced him has a better shot.
10   Should be a 100% lock; this forum?  50-50 at best.
9   Cozy Powell (I submitted my predictions AFTER this)
8   Nicko McBrain No. 11's "other guy".   Should be 70-30 to make it.
7   Sadly, no chance.
6   Bill Ward (Sadly, probably no chance; he's a pale shell of his former self, but some of his early live work is incendiary.)
5   Ringo Starr (SHOULD BE 100% lock.)
4   100% lock
3   100% lock
2   Phil Collins (100% lock)
1   100% lock and my guess for Number One overall.

Nicko is the man; I was always a fan of Clive, and at first thought the whole "McBrain" thing was a joke that wasn't all that funny (his first album with Maiden had Eddie with a lobotomy on the cover and was called PIECE of Mind) but he really IS the lynchpin of Maiden at this point.

Marco Minnemann is my favorite drummer because he always surprises me with his playing and there are literally hundreds of albums (even if he only plays on a few songs) that he has been a part of, always with his very distinctive playing. He plays all those complex and crazy stuff with a light-hearted feeling, like it's really a second nature to him. To me, his drumming truly sounds like the culmination of all the years of modern drumming's development.
For those who wants to hear him playing something closer do DT/LTE style, I recommend those amazing albums (I selected some songs off them):

The 2 Levin Minnemann Rudess albums (I guess it's on youtube, but apparently not on spotify).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQoTqFHJA-Y

Syrek - Story (with Bryan Beller and Mohini Dey on bass)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=727PpxC4iIM&list=OLAK5uy_ktrPskmQhr0RAlhtfYcYi6ryp34QnVN7M&index=7

Dewa Budjan - Mahandini (all the album with Rudess and Mohini Dey on bass)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B86EqIp13wA

Taku Yabuki – Modern World Symphony No.3 (an unbelievable excellent album that I just discovered a month ago! Marco plays only on tracks 5, 7 and 13)
https://www.discogs.com/release/15902559-Taku-Yabuki-Modern-World-Symphony-No3
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJDY12PeqtU&list=OLAK5uy_l4o40sJixMQ_pPa47dy8lMyHGT8apciOU&index=5

By the way, I love Bill Bruford (my#25). His work with Yes and King Crimson is amazing and revolutionary. I also love Nicko, I think he made a very creative work from Piece of Mind to 7th Son and surely helped a lot to craft Maiden's classic sound ever more.

It's the second half of one of the b-sides, I forget which one (EDIT:  It's the tail end of "Black Bart Blues" from the "Can I Play With Madness" single).    It's a bunch of snippets of dumb shit that Nicko said into the microphone.  "A CD! We're going to put it on a CD!!!"   Some of them are hilarious.

His greatest work in Maiden?   https://youtu.be/YSQUq_xdHsM

I thought the same about his name. I didn't think it was real.

and yes!! "Fuck my old boots".

I actually bought the picture disc when it came out.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

7 - Marco Minnemann

8 - Nicko McBrain

I only know Minnemann's name from the DT drummer auditions.  If my memory is correct, he seemed to be the consensus favorite of folks on the MP forum (I wasn't here at DTF at that time).  However, I don't believe I've ever heard anything he's played on.

Nicko, on the other hand, has been rock solid for the better part of 40 years.  While I'm not a big fan of the more recent Maiden output, his work on the classic Maiden material was superb.  His announcement of his arrival in the band on Where Eagles Dare let fans know the drum thrown was in good hands after Clive Burr's departure.  I had Nicko at #4.

25   Keith Moon (Maybe...not sure)
24   Probably not
23   I'd say 60-70% chance no
22   Ringo Starr (Probably)
21   Probably not
20   Probably not
19   90% yes
18   Nein
17   Absolutely should be, but I'm thinking less than 50/50
16   Nope
15   Not even a little chance
14   No way, eh
13   Phil Collins (90+% yes)
12   Not a chance
11   Nope
10   Lars Ulrich (I think yes, only about 60% sure)
9   Bill Ward (Should be...75+% likely)
8   Bill Bruford (75+% likely)
7   Cozy Powell (50/50)
6   Scott Rockenfield (Hmmm...really not sure, but I think less than 50/50)
5   Same band as #8 - one of them should make it, if not both
4   Nicko McBrain (90+% yes)
3   Lock
2   Mark Zonder (Might sneak in around 21-25)
1   Lock for top 3

Not ranked:  Gene Hoglan, Blake Richardson, Carter Beauford, Alex Van Halen, Martin Lopez, Stewart Copeland, Dave Lombardo, Nick D'Virgilio, Brann Dailor, Marco Minnemann

Still pretty confident in four of the final 6...less confident in a 5th guy (it'll be a bummer if he doesn't make it since the guy he replaced has made it, but I'll be surprised if he's this high).  No idea about the 6th - could be any number of people or someone I've never heard of.

I thought the same about his name. I didn't think it was real.

Same - especially since I had the Piece of Mind picture disc, which prominently displayed Eddie's removed brain in a salad bar on the reverse side.  I thought the name was a gag to fit the album's theme.

Minneman is a monster.  I had him at # 24 on my list, but he could easily have been higher.

I'm not a fan of Maiden, so McBrain was unranked for me.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

7 - Marco Minnemann
Appeared on 17 of 29 lists
Highest Finish: 1 (devieira73)
7 Top 10 Finishes

8 - Nicko McBrain
Appeared on 15 of 29 lists
Highest Finish: 3 (Mladen)
8 Top 10 Finishes

Marco Minnemann - my number 19. Loved his DT audition and his work with SW.

Nicko McBrain - my number 5. As the drummer of my favourite band I had to have Nicko right up there. These days I find Nicko's drumming to be pretty predictable but his work on the 80s albums, including his now iconic Where Eagles Dare opening is pretty special to me.

I can only safely guess four of the last six.  I have vague guesses for the remaining two - actually, I think I can get five of the last six.

I can only safely guess 3 of the remaining drummers, probably who will be the top 3. I have a couple more on my list that could be there. So I could have 5 of the remaining 6 left on my list. I could speculate who the other drummer is but really not sure.

I'm locked on 4 of them, and about 90% sure on the other two. I got all 6 on my list, all listed as locks.

If the top 6 are who I think they will be, it will have 4 of my top 5, one guy I totally forgot about, and another that some will shame me for leaving off.

I'm kind of amazed you can be so certain on this one. I mean we have had thrash metal drummers, rock drummers, prog drummers, a bit of everything so far. It just doesn't feel like the remainder are that easy.
