This sounds like the lovechild of Pull Me Under, Forsaken, and A Rite of Passage.

Interesting perspective...  Personally, I think all 3 of those songs are examples of DT Metal and Non-proggy.  In this song, I hear a lot of "Prog"  Guess we all hear things differently :)

I think it's more the love child of Pull Me Under and Acid Rain.
I don’t know what to put here anymore

Happily, my first thought upon seeing the art; "Yay, this means a blue DTF theme in Sept!   :tup"

Fix'd
And for emphasis!  :tup

Fine :P but it had better be sky blue, none of that baby blue knock off.

ok so after listening to this for the umpteenth time, i'm in love. Initially, I was clouded with doubt and ambiguity: the cover alluding to circus maximus (amongst other artists) coupled with the new dynamic of Mangini and the other musicians being VERY provident this time around... there is so much to take in, and my judgment and ability to just enjoy it was clouded by these factors. But it just grows on you with every listen. It feels so right!

I actually like the way Mangini fits in: I feel his role is very supportive in this tune (and most likely for the remainder of the album), which is why he blends in to the song and can be hard to notice (for instance, following jordans keys on cymbals, Petrucci's riffs with his feet (simultaneously mind you omgwtf?!?!)). He also plays VERY dynamically (listen to the accenting on the snare). These elements are, at least IMO, in striking contrast to Mike Portnoy, who was constantly loud (metal DT) and, besides maybe following guitars, on a rhythmic tangent and musically less supportive. This is a very generic assumption about MP, but I think thats the key difference in the new band dynamic: DT now have a drummer who is really out to emphasize the other musicians and give the tunes a super solid foundation.

12 hour wait to get home from work and listen with decent sound quality was made much worse by spending my down time at work reading everyone else's reactions in this thread on my phone. I'm definitely digging the song though. A few other people have thrown the word organic around, and I think that nails it for me. As much as I enjoy listening to AROP sometimes (to compare to DTs last album opener), that transition from the solo section into the chorus is incredibly unwieldy/ham handed. Everything here seems to flow much more naturally though. I was already looking forward to the new album, but my anticipation has definitely ratcheted up a notch :tup

Of course Dream Theater isn't that good. Good music is obviously about 3 minute pop songs and catchy hooks.

Besides the kinda bad lyrics and JR's annoying riffs (or w/e they are called) the song is pretty good. Love his piano moment and JP's solo is quite nice.
Anyone else thinks JR is a bit too high in the mix or at least the youtube version of the song and the drums are quite muffled (watched at 720p).
A minute shorter wouldn't have hurt the song, imo. I'm... optimistic about the rest of the material.
Too bad I'm not educated enough on the subject to notice Mangini's influence in the song. Hope the other songs have a more obvious way of showing that to us.

Then I listened again with a focus on the drums.  My mind is now blown.

I really like the part at 2:09 where Mike plays on the hihat in accordance to what JR plays, and on the bass drums following JP.
That was a "holy shit" moment for me.
Seriously, listen to what Nikatapi pointed out here....it is mind blowing.

I still love MP drum parts, but I very much like what I'm hearing here too.  On the surface, it seems to fit into DT just like MP's parts...but I think there are some hidden gems that are really interesting and new to DT.  My impression at this point: whereas many of MP's great parts were "skeletal" to the song and provided the rockin' framework,  MM's part on this seemed more reactive to what the others were doing.  Probably partially a result of the songs being written before he got into his parts....but if you listen to MM's comments on TSCO vids (and other interviews), he does seem to give alot of thought into understanding and reacting to what other musicians are doing.

Am I the only one who finds that JP's guitar tone isn't his best? I would've liked a more energic, a more lighter guitar sound.
Jesus Christ himself* comes down amidst a choir of 2 billion angels singing Handel's Hallelujah chorus. As KrotchRaut shred randomly on guitars made of dragon bones using picks made from God's kidney stones, Jesus heals a blind woman who promptly gives birth onstage to a creation of pure light.

*Yes, Jesus Christ himself. Nothing less will do.

I thought JPs guitar tone was freakin' stellar! at least from a metal perspective. While I am a guitarist myself, I'm not exactly a tone buff  :lol but I was blown away by JP's tone and overall performance.

One thing I noticed after listening several times:  JM and MM fit together perfectly.  JM is following MM more than JP, which is a nice change and results in a noticeable (and welcome) change in groove.

AcidRainLTE and Heaven Outcry Angel (in no particular order), I strongly suggest that the two of you just ignore each other for the time being.  Given that Nick has already given a warning in the thread, one more off-topic, baiting post from either of you earns you a vacation.  And I'm not in the mood for parsing out just how close to the line you can get, so please don't try to toe the line.  Either post about what the thread is about, or don't post in it.
