Hm. Well, so far, I like it. Seems a bit samey, but I still like it a lot.

I'm starting my second listen right now. And yes, the fact that it's all very samey is my biggest complaint about it. Nothing stands out.

Also, it's not nearly as much of a departure from Elements of Persuasion as most seemed to expect.

The sameyness is definitely the biggest issue I have with the album. After multiple listens, I still have to check to see which track is playing most of the time. It's good, but nothing really stands out. Both Mullmuzzler albums and EoP had moments where a certain vocal melody or a cool instrumental bit would get your attention, and for the most part, each track was unique enough to identify. This album didn't really seem to have that.
Also, it may just be me, but the production felt like it exacerbated the sameyness.

I definitely miss the diversity of the past JLB solo efforts and, while screaming in general doesn't bother me, I find the screams on this record particularly bad.

Like all James' solo work there's some good, some bad, and some ugly. Also like James' other solo work, there's a couple moments here that I find to be lolworthy.

Euphoric, anyone? Great melodies but I literally laugh out loud every time I hear: "I'm her drug(?) and she is my currrrr."

Schweet!

Really liked the album. I agree with the comments that it's a little samey, but there are lots of really great choruses throughout the album, and I think the overall sound is the most dynamic and energetic thing LaCake has done. Top-notch stuff.

Interesting, one might think that LaBrie would be needed for recording around Feb/March of next year.

I happened to do a quick check to see how the album was doing on Amazon;
On Amazon.ca, it's listed as 'Pop'. Oh Amazon.

The beginning of the solo sounds tone and playing wise like it was lifted from Suspended Animation.

one of the things i really like about SI is how James seems genuinely concerned with making it sound like a band effort. one of my biggest issues with EoP was that the band seemed 'under' James. while his voice sounded good, it wasn't really recorded in a way that meshes with the music imo.

SI is much different. James is recorded to sound like a he's no more important than any other  player in the band. i think that's really cool. one thing i did notice, though, is that there aren't really any high-pitched screams on the album from him. i wonder why not since i do recall it being promised.

aside from that, is it crazy that I think EoP was actually heavier than this album? Sure SI is heavy and has the screams, but EoP had much more CHUGGA CHUGGA CHUGGA stuff going on.

"Just Watch Me" is the greatest song about James learning how to nail the Learning to Live F# again that I've ever heard.

Static Impulse sounds cleaner, somehow. EoP has that sort of dirty, jagged heaviness. In spite of the fairly frequent heavy vocals, EoP's net result is a lot more caustic.

I Need You is such a good song.

On second listen I prefer this album to EoP. Not by a great deal, EoP has more variety which gets it bonus points, but the songs on SI are just more enjoyable! :metal

I'm really digging the album. The solo section in Jekyll or Hyde is awesome :lol
Jesus Christ himself* comes down amidst a choir of 2 billion angels singing Handel's Hallelujah chorus. As KrotchRaut shred randomly on guitars made of dragon bones using picks made from God's kidney stones, Jesus heals a blind woman who promptly gives birth onstage to a creation of pure light.

*Yes, Jesus Christ himself. Nothing less will do.

After mulitple listens, I think EOP is a little better.

I dig that CJS wanted to incorporate the harsh vocals to present a contrast to his vocals.  However, the contrast loses its impact when it is done on nearly every single song.  I mean, I like most of the songs themselves.  But when taken as a whole, it is a bit much.

However, I absolutely love One More Time, Mislead, and Euphoric.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Hm. For some reason, I feel like the harsh vocals become really sparse after the first three songs. I'm too lazy to check now, though.

For me, SI has a higher overall standard quality. EoP has way higher highs, but a lot more parts that make me wonder what James was going for. While there's nothing quite as out of this world as "Drained" on the new record, there's also nothing quite as James out of his mind as that monologue in "In Too Deep."

I like EoP better, at least as of right now. It has more memorable and higher quality songwriting as a whole. SI, though enjoyable, just sounds like one giant mass of songs I can hardly tell apart, aside from "Euphoric" and "Coming Home."

And I like the monologue in "In Too Deep."

I know why it's called "James LaBrie", but I'm wondering if they would have chosen and used a name for their band instead if the critism of the "second vocalist" would be less.  He co-wrote the songs, and he's not the only singer, so I think its fair to call the album more of a band effort than a solo album.

I remember that the label didn't want him to use Mullmuzzler for EoP just to generate more awareness, it's probably the same thing now and that's why he/they didn't change the name.

I still like the Mullmuzzler albums more, but that's more due to personal taste than anything.

I like this new album a lot. Except for "Who You Think I Am" all the songs vary from decent to awesome, and Peter Wildoer's work is not bad at all.

By the time the album was in "Superstar" I was satisfied, but I thought it was lacking from a song in the styles of "Smashed", "Slightly Out of Reach" and "Slow Burn". Then "Coming Home" kicked in, incredible song. It's one of the best songs of the album long with "Jekyll or Hide", "Over the Edge", "I Tried", "Euphoric" and "Mislead" (The best song in the album IMO)

I really thought EoP was nothing special (though a few vocal melodies were really good) so I don't know if I should give this album a chance.
