Nevermore doesn't have any growls, though some of the vocals are in the "gruff" shouting sort of vocals that were used in 80s thrash.

... i just don't feel like this is a James Labrie song with those fuckin growls. With him singing the chorus, it's like he's a guest on the track.

Queensryche are irrelevant at this point. I'd love to find a reasonably popular metal band that was formed in the last decade that doesn't use any growls or screams at all.

Go to metalarchives.com and you'll find thousands of them. But then, forming within the last 10 years is an artificial restriction. Metallica, Megadeth, Maiden, Priest, Heaven and Hell, etc etc remain extremely popular and relevant without lowering their standards and resorting to such idiocy.

I also laughed at the QR and FW references, but I found this particular part of the post interesting:

I actually prefer Tribe AND Mindcrime II over Systematic Chaos

It's interesting to me simply because I see some valid comparisons within the contexts of each band's catalog.  What each of these albums have in common, IMO, is that they each represent an incredibly strong half-an-album or so of material, and then some other songs that represent...let's say a "different" level of quality.  Consequently, I react very similarly to each of these three albums.

(That being said, I'm much less enthusiastic about the two QR albums.  The good parts of Tribe are easily on par with anything the band has ever written, but the bad parts are SO bad it hurts.  And MCII has not aged well with me at all.  I'm not sure if it is more the knowledge that the band didn't write it, that even the good songs lack the depth and thoughtfulness I've come to expect from the band, or that it just didn't do the original Mindcrime justice.  Perhaps a bit of all three.  But at least Tribe was written by actual band members, including Chris.  Jason Slater is a good songwriter, and I think he tapped the QR style and vibe as well as anyone outside the band could possibly be expected to, but it was still a completely outside effort by a band who has had every opportunity to bring someone actually into the band to write with them, and has simply failed to do so.  Anyway, didn't want to turn this into a QR rant, so I'll stop.)

I gave One More Time a new chance today. I understand it more, and even if I still want more LaBrie in it (Singing), it's not a bad song,a nd I like the lyrics. I like it now.

As a person who typically does not like growls/screams, I have to say this song kicks ass, and I am really looking forward to this album.

I can't say I dig the 2 second intro thing they have. It seems like they just tacked it on to say "Hey look, we have more technical members now, we can do crazy stuff!". It doesn't serve much of a purpose and has a really odd transition into the song.

One more time is surely has a great atmosphere though I am not of scream vocals but I can live with that at least for this song. As for James  vocal, it's extremely better than EoP. It kinda reminds me PMU.

Ok so Rich Wilson posted on the VoicesUK forum that he's heard the album and that the opening track is the only one with any growls. In case any of the growl-haters were worried! :)

Didn't Labrie say there was a few songs or something to that effect???

If this is the only song with harsh vocals, I for one will be disapointed.

I thought I read something like that, although I can't remember where. I guess RW might have just meant the only song with any significant use of them, rather than any at all.

Hm, I might get it if that's the case.

I'm listening to One More Time right now. Actually, the screaming doesn't throw me off as much as the silly, unnecessary bass fills at the beginning and the start of the instrumental section. No groove, no flowing together with the song, and the sound is pretty bad, there's almost no bottom end to it.
... And you ask me: "Where's my hairspray?"

Mentlegen.

That doesn't diminish the quality of what the music could be like, growls or no growls.

Agree.  But I was getting pumped for growls, so if they are only in that song, I am still disappointed in that fact.

You're judging the sound quality from an online stream? ???

Why do you need to get pumped for growls on a James LaBrie release when you can listen to them from thousands of other bands and releases?

Because it's something new and fresh for LaBrie, and would have been exciting IMO.  Yeah I could go and listen to my Soilwork, In Flames or Scar Symmetry albums, but I expect growls from them.

Perhaps if you gave us a definition of what you consider to be growls and stated why the ones in this song don't fit the bill, people would be more inclined to address your point. :P

Also, what happened to your post count?

Can you people seriously not distinguish growls from screams. Akerfeldt growls, trolls growl, bears growl. Chester Bennington screams, Corey Taylor screams. I forgot what the dude in LaBrie's new song sounds like but either way, he's not growling.
