alright finally through first listens. ten of the sixteen songs this round neatly slot into "prog rock/metal" classification and a few of the others definitely have prog elements besides that. this feels like a very 2016-roulette type of round 

amusingly both my favorite and least favorite of the round on first listen are in the 15+ minute camp and i don't really see one of those changing. maybe both won't change, even. who knows 

first impressions tomorrow and/or if y'all solve hangman before i sleep

It's actually probably the closest to normal prog metal I've gotten to in the roulette, though it has other stuff going on as well.  If you ask for epic closers, I'm not sure you can be surprised if you get a lot of prog metal or similar.

Well, technically Crow simply asked for "closers", but the round is called "The Grand Finale" so yeah it's not surprising most of us have interpreted it that way.

Final Round First Impressions!

Reaper: Knowing who's behind this band… this is firmly not what I expected this to sound like And it's honestly way nicer than I was expecting too!

2. In terms of prog, this style definitely leans a lot closer to my tastes/sensibilities in the genre, yeah.

Ariich: There's an entire family of bands that sound exactly like these guys that I've equally never been able to really get into despite them all being pretty competent at what they do.

4. Not exactly the kind of sound that's gonna blow my world, but it's at least rock solid enjoyable at the end of the day.

Buddy: This is one of those "heard of but never checked out" acts and jesus christ if this is any indication I should've been on them way sooner, god DAMN.

6. Ooh, this could've so easily veered too far towards sounds I'm unenthused about but it's colorful enough and grandiose enough that, nah, it's pretty rad.

Luke: Well, seeing this artist name, I'm not… sure what I expected, but it certainly wasn't this.

HOF: Real chill and pleasant with some solid playing, but I kinda wish it did… more?

King: This reeeeally took its time to get going and then… didn't really impress me once it did.

10. See, you get me and the type of prog I tend to love. Theatricality, intensity, a general chaotic energy and a grand scope… hits all the right notes for me.

11. A bit more colorful, moody, and grandiose than I usually expect from this genre that's decisively not for me… could see it actually working, as a result?

12. It's a bit of a slow burn to a big climax but ironically, I might've liked the buildup more than the payoff.

13. Yeah, again, I got pretty much what I expected out of this one and that doesn't necessarily make it… bad, just, unexciting. Like yup.

15. Honestly it's completely on me that I haven't listened to this band enough to ban them, because they're pretty consistently one of if not my favorite of their contemporaries.
