Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit - Here We Rest

Caedmon's Call - Caedmon's Call (2022 Re-Recording)

Interesting, though that seems really...unnecessary.  The original has a really nostalgic vibe for me, I have "Hope To Carry On" as part of my acoustic/electric light alt rock playlist along with a bunch of Goo Goo Dolls, Gin Blossoms, Sixpence None the Richer, The Tea Party, Shaded Red, Splender, etc.  Pretty unique and relaxing feel from that era.
The original is out of print, and unavailable on streaming services, so they made a big deal about re-recording it for its 25th anniversary.  A bit of a reunion as well; other than Derek Webb, who has stayed busy, the rest of the band has been dormant for a while.  In conjunction with the re-recording, they are going to play a couple of live shows, including at the Ryman.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Definitely. Such a unique sound with a fretless bass on a rock album.

Esthesis - Watching Worlds Collide

https://esthesis.bandcamp.com/album/watching-worlds-collide

Read about this album yesterday, and just now getting a chance to give it a careful listen. Very cool, atmospheric jazzy prog. Definitely influenced by Porcupine Tree (maybe a little too much in places), but it sounds really good.

I definitely want to hear it, but I'm a bit pickier about Finnish and German melodeath than I am Swedish ones.

Well, Insomnium, Omnium Gatherum, and Be'lakor (Australian, but more in the Finnish style) are some of the flagship melodeath bands these days for a lot of people.  They're alright/good, but just don't really captivate me like the best Swedish ones did.  I haven't listened to the earlier Disillusion albums in many years, but I remember there being a melodeath undercurrent to them.  RYM says it's also a secondary influence on this one as well.

I gave the new Disillusion only one listen, so it's early to say...a lot to digest, but it sounded good. However - and I know they are different -  if we stay within a broadly defined "heavy prog" genre, I didn't feel there were moments as immediately striking as, say, the Abstract Illusion record. The latter is much heavier, for sure, but there are some shared traits in terms of soundscapes and long-form tunes...

Sounds super-promising, though, and I'm sure it's a grower.

Litho - I'm not sure I hear a lot of "melodeath" (as codified by the sound of the various bands you mention) in here. I think Back to Times of Splendor had some traces of it here and there, but even that was more of a "progressive" affair than melodic death metal.

Well, blame Cyril, he called it melodeath.  :P  As I mentioned, I haven't heard either this one or the earlier ones in quite some time, so my memory is hazy, I just remember them being on the periphery of that scene.  Insomnium and co. have some proggy elements too, Disillusion I think just flips the mix, where the proggier elements are more at the forefront, and the melodeath ones take a backseat.
