Does that mean I get an invite to this year's Christmas orgy?/

The theme is actually Dear Hunter Orgy this year, but yes, you're invited.

I wasn't a huge fan of TDH before this, but now that Zack showed me the Color Spectrum, I can tell this has a really good chance of being in my top 15 albums ever.

And now I am going to see them in August.  :hat

This was me before the Color Spectrum. 'Twas just a casual fan, but the insane diversity of this album is just wonderful.

I think I may just buy The Color Spectrum if it is as good as you guys are saying. I heard one track before and it was awesome stuff.

Really seems like it, it's just I wanted to get acquainted with the Act albums first...but this may be the better purchase for now.

I listened to all of The Color Spectrum today. It was pretty cool. I actually like it way more than everything else I've heard by The Dear Hunter. Not sure why; I just did.

Indigo and Violet are by far my favorites upon first listen.

I just saw that these guys are playing at Lincoln Hall in Chicago.. I've been to some shows there and I'm thinking of going but I don't know anything about these guys...   Everyone here seems to like them..  Who are they and what kind of stuff do they play?

I would describe them as progressive rock/indie rock. Their first 3 "Acts" (albums) are part of a concept series that ZeppelinDT can explain to you better.

Basically they're the best thing since sliced bread and you should go see them.

There's so many genres explored on the Color Spectrum that I just label it as progressive rock, yeah.

Definitely check em' out, they're great.

Calling The Dear Hunter "indie rock" is about as unfair as calling Coheed and Cambria "emo." They're a progressive rock band, full stop. Their official website even says so. ;)

Even though this latest release is quite progressive in the true sense of the word, ironically it's not very prog. Though genre tags are pretty useless...I'd imagine TCS appealing more to indie-heads than prog-heads.
on par with the anguish one would have from getting unconsensually bent over and buttloved.

Oh yeah, no doubt there's some crossover. I was just saying that calling them an indie rock band doesn't do them or their music justice.

Man, I really wish I felt that this album (I'll just call it an album rather than series of EPs or whatever) is as good as many of you do. I like it and it's obviously very good, but so far I'd say it doesn't compare to the Acts. Part of it is that I just don't have the time to sit down and listen to it straight through or really more than a couple songs at a time. Maybe that would help me like it better. I don't know... it's just missing something that all three Acts had. Can't really describe it.

I don't like it any more or less than the Acts. It's a completely different kind of work and so not really comparable.

Don't worry, some of these guys see an album come out and they announce that its the best thing ever and then stop talking about it after a week.  This is no different.  ;)

I also understand that its a bit too long to sit through in one go, and the music itself isn't really comparable to the Acts (except for Orange, White, and Violet, I think) but I like the Acts more because they're more concise and connected and really give you a full album experience where every song is great, while TCS has some fantastic songs, but also a lot of "just okay" songs as well.

I think this is part of the reason I don't like it as much. The only song on all three Acts that I think is "just OK" is Go Get Your Gun. So hearing new TDH material that I would consider "just OK" brings it down for me. I guess I need to get over my initial disappointment that this wasn't the greatest thing they'd put out and appreciate it for what it is.

I think a lot of it might also take some growing.  I've listened through the entire set maybe 4 or 5 times so far, and I still feel like I've only just barely scratched the surface.  I dedicated a good chuck of my day yesterday solely to TCS, and only after doing that did I really even begin to feel like I was "getting" it.

I certainly do.  If you haven't heard TDH before though it'll be misleading as to their general sound.  For that, replace Black with Violet.  If you know what TDH normally does then go with the two you've quoted.

I've got a pretty good idea I think. Ariich sent me a TDH in my roulette.

The Acts have somewhat of an energetic feel, passionate vocals, tight musicianship that leans toward "indie" but is also progressive. At least I think, I'm not that familiar with them.

They are not in essence an indie band, but they do carry around that indie aesthetic both in look and sound. And honestly, prog could use something like indie to make it progressive again.
