Don't worry though, A Fool's Paradise is amongst the top...we'll see how long it will stand because i have not really decided the winner for me yet.

Okay, time to hijack this thread.

Iconoclast is awesome. I don't know what you guys are smoking to think otherwise.  :lol

I was thinking the same thing, but on the other hand, maybe they should smoke something.  :2metal:

Necro bump

My ranking of the Symphony X albums:

#1. The Divine Wings of Tragedy
#2. The Odyssey
#3. Paradise Lost
#4. V: The New Mythology Suite
#5. The Damnation Game
#6. Twilight in Olympus
#7. Iconoclast
... Haven't listened to the debut yet.

Iconoclast hasn't grown on me yet. It's the highest rated Symphony X albums on some websites (metalcrypt), however.

Divine Wings, V and The Odyssey. That's it.

Above albums do have lackluster production, but I'd take that over the brickwalled mechanicalsound of PL and Iconoclast any day.

Damn I forgot that one! Wouldn't say it's amazing, but there really are some of their best songs on it (Smoke, Church, Looking Glass etc.)
Not 'Down To F***', but 'Dream Theater Forums' .

Ok, I'll play this game, even if my rankings for the SX albums aren't as well defined as my rankings for DT's records.

1 - V:The New Mythology Suite
2 - Twilight In Olympus
3 - The Divine Wings of Tragedy
4 - The Damnation Game
5 & 6 - Paradise Lost & Iconoclast (More or less even right now, however, that may change in the coming years...)
7 - The Odyssey

....and somewhere so deep the light of the sun cannot reach...
8 - s/t

They still haven't perfected their sound. It's almost there, but there are a lot of elements missing that makes the other albums better.

My list:

1. V: the Mythology Suite
2. Twilight in Olympus
3. Divine Wings of Tragedy

4. The Odyssey
5. Paradise Lost
6. The Iconoclast

I have heard The Damnation Game, but not enough to put it on this list.  I'm guessing it will probably settle above The Odyssey for me when it does end up on the list, though.  And yes, for me, Twilight in Olympus outranks Divine Wings.  There are three reasons for that: Pharaoh, Eyes of Medusa, and The Witching Hour.  While I don't dislike those songs, I don't like them either, and they drag the album down.  Twilight in Olympus, while shorter, holds my attention all the way through.  That said, the high points of Divine Wings (The Accolade, Divine Wings, Candlelight Fantasia) do outrank the high points of Twilight (Smoke and Mirrors, Church of the Machine, Through the Looking Glass), so it's almost a tough call--but not quite.

I don't get the hype about The Odyssey, but maybe I just need to listen to it more.  I like the title track, Accolade II, and that's about it.

I wouldn't call Paradise Lost and Iconoclast bad albums, but the symphonic elements feel underplayed and Allen doesn't use his voice to its full potential.  This isn't what I listen to Symphony X for.  If other people enjoy it, fine, but I can't imagine how they're better than V in any universe.  Also, this might seem inconsequential, but the art on Iconoclast reminds me of something out of an Xbox game designed to appeal to the dudebro demographic, and it affects how I perceive the music.  By no means am I claiming that this is anything other than my subjective perception.

The Damnation Game might really be #3 for me. "A Winter's Dream" pts. I & II have long been two of my very favorite Symphony X songs, and I just recently remembered how awesome "Whispers" is after completely forgetting about its existence since about 2007. Really #3-5 are interchangeable for me. I've always been fond of The Damnation Game.

7thHanyou: Maybe you should check out "Inferno," "Wicked," "King of Terrors," and "Awakenings" from The Odyssey. Kick ass album. The only thing I don't like about it is the cover art, which is a bit too cartoony for my taste. I do understand what you mean about how album artwork may affect how one perceives the music. ;)

I've heard them several times, they just haven't "clicked."  It took a long time for Divine Wings to "click" with me as well, so I'm assuming it's a matter of time.  That said, I'll pay special attention to those tracks on the next listen.

I realized a few moments ago that if I were to rank Symphony X albums by their cover art, my list would look identical.  I actually like the cover art for V and Twilight in Olympus and I'm not to fond of any of the other ones.

That's not the case for most of the other bands I listen to (particularly Dream Theater), so I guess it's just a fluke, but the art of Iconoclast has definitely gotten in the way for me.  If the music were more symphonic, that probably wouldn't be the case.

Has anyone posted this yet?

(from the symx website:)

Jason Rullo
Posted on February 27, 2013
February 27, 2013
World Management and Symphony X must unfortunately announce that last week, Jason Rullo was admitted to the hospital for heart failure. Jason spent a week in the hospital, and was released last week; he has started a rehab program, and has been told that his recovery will take a minimum of 3-6 months under doctors’ care. We are all hopeful that J will be back soon!

A note from Jason:

“I would just like to say that I am happy to be home with my family after what was quite a week.
We had a few scary days in there but I made it through what was hopefully the worst of it.

Doctors say I have a very good chance for a full recovery so I plan to be back at 100% even if it takes awhile. I will go through cardiac rehab so I can be monitored while returning to form, so that I’ll know when it’s safe for me to return to drumming the way I always have, if not better.

Thanks to my friends and family for the support, and to the fans, I love you all!” JR

and:

Jason asked that this be posted in response to the outpouring of support he’s received over the past few days:

I can’t thank everybody enough for your support in this time. I am overwhelmed by the number of people who have written in on our various media outlets. I can feel the love and again can’t tell you how much it means to me.

I am doing my best to recover and all the positive vibes sure help!

Much love,
Jason

I wish Jason Rullo well and hope he soon recovers!

I wonder how it will affect Symphony X's Latin American tour dates in April, and their European and North American tour dates later in the year if it takes him longer than the minimum of 3-6 months to recover.

I'm honestly more amazed that someone can be admitted to the hospital for HEART FAILURE and still be expected to make a full recovery. Modern medicine is truly incredible.

That's ok, even if they did announce that they're working on a new album, it wouldn't be done for another 4 or 5 years.
