First listen: Pretty good, I hope it grows.
Second listen: Whoa, it's growing.
Third listen: There are like 529 things to be excited about in this song

I have no idea how awesome it will be by the end of the day. I might die.

First time ever when I agree with Aniland! :)

I hope the vocals aren't like that on the entire album. I don't know, they sound flat on the song.

The song though is awesome. You can definately hear that something changed in the DT world lately.
Jesus Christ himself* comes down amidst a choir of 2 billion angels singing Handel's Hallelujah chorus. As KrotchRaut shred randomly on guitars made of dragon bones using picks made from God's kidney stones, Jesus heals a blind woman who promptly gives birth onstage to a creation of pure light.

*Yes, Jesus Christ himself. Nothing less will do.

Agreed, if there's one thing that I though was gonna change with MP gone is JLB vocals. I hope his range is not as underused as it's been on the last 2 albums.

Ok, i just listened it for the fifth time... and it's still amazing. I love the clean guitar in the beggining, the part when the song goes heavy after the intro, the catchy chorus, the Petrucci solo and piano part. I love how JM's bass is audible again, and I was blown away by the drums.
Really great song. I can't wait till the full album is released.

Absolutely loving this song. After about 4 listens through, this seems like the natural progression from albums like Images, Awake, Scenes...It doesn't sound like it should have been on those albums, but it sounds like the natural progression. It trumps anything from Train of thought onwards...and I'm a fan of those albums!

This is just fantastic. The part around 3:30...Mangini's cymbal work?...holy shit. I'm not reading a lot of love for the Petrucci intro which I think is fantastic. The song is totally cohesive and has the elements that I believed made DT great on albums like Images and Scenes....which was a cohesive song that had twists and turns rhythmically and melodically with incredible playing and singing. The vocal harmonies, while simple, are gorgeous. I think all 5 guys have outdone themselves in their individual roles and as a whole I think it's fantastic.

Bring on the rest of the album!

I love it. If this is the single of ADTOE we are going to spend a very happy September, this year!  :metal

Anyway, on my italian forum user are quite displeased with the song. One of them even said that OtBoA disgusted him so much that he is probably done with DT. Cheers.  :D

Great song, that grows a lot after the 1st listen...
Many hidden things to be discovered..

As concers MM drumming...well...it's amazing.

Only non-drumming experts that tend to judge only on decibels or bpm can say that...

Listen for example @ 2.10 or 8.10...polirythmic figures over odd times...amazing...something not really in MP dictionary...

:hefdaddy OMG I'm really surprised! This is a very very good song. Someone said something like this somewhere above and I agree. "this is the DT that i fell in love with". The chorus remembers me of the kind of melodies that James sang on 'Static Impulse'.
It's not easy to acknowledge this, but it seems that they are doing much better without Portnoy sitting in the driver's seat.

That "album cover" is clearly a reference to "the backs of angels". That's probably not the album artwork, but more like a single artwork like AROP, Forsaken, etc.

The new song is great, easily better than any single they've ever had with the exception of Pull Me Under. If this is the "single" count me excited.

Ehhhmm okay, then I'm sorry. Don't see what's wrong in stating that the new Dream Theater without Portnoy is more tasteful to listen too though.
Neither do I. This just something so "natural" about this song that hasn't been there on the past couple releases. You can tell there was no "creative director" guiding anyone's (everyone's) hand.

This song is really all over the place, with each member just off in the own world but still together. It reminds me of Images and Words. Whereas Mike Portnoy liked to reign everyone in as creative director, here everyone sounds really free to do their own thing, especially Jordan and Myung. I don't see a song this good and this "Dream Theater" coming out with Mike in his DT role.

First impression:
Instrumentally very cool, finally some bass, very nice piano solo.  :metal

Vocal melodies are not that interesting though, the chorus is pretty forgettable and so far I don't really like the sound of the drums (could be because of youtube compression though).

Just logging to increase the user total amount today!! I have not listened to the whole song yet, cause I'm at work and I'm pressing play some seconds, then stop, then play some seconds again   :-[ :-[ :-[ because my boss will listen my speakers on and  :police: :police:

Can't wait to hear the song in one hour!!

Anyway, I think it sounds a lot like I&W-Awake-SFAM. It is really classic DT.

 :hefdaddy

PS. And yes, the clown seems a lot like the one in the 1st chapter album cover by CM.

LOL Italians... don't worry, I'm Italian so I can say it.

One thing that I do hope... the vocal melody isn't particularly catchy, which is fine because it fits this song, but I REALLY hope that LaBrie has some super melodic melodies.

Here was my initial one-listen take on the tune:

Honestly, I like it. I don't "love" it, but I like it much better on first listen than any of their last couple of records on first listen. The song "breathes," the notes are not going a million miles an hour, and I like the keyboard style and tone on the intro.

The only thing I would argue is that given the simplicity (for DT) of the song, it didn't have to be 8 minutes. It could have been high fives, even six minutes. Some refinement might have taken this from "like" to "love" for me quickly.

That said, the song absolutely is a nice change of pace for DT. James is singing a lot more controlled, and as ShadowWalker and I discussed off the board, it's not very dynamic. That's strange, but it fits the tune. It would have fit better if they hacked off 90 seconds though.
