Say what?

Actually that whole post was kind of a "say what?" but this especially.  Needless to say, I do not agree kind sir.

Okay, let's take Still Life as our example, since it's the one I'm most familiar with.  The album starts off great with The Moor, which I really dig.  But the rest of the album is just...boring.  I dunno, I can't describe it.  Maybe I'll do a song-by-song to organize myself.

Godhead's Lament is muddy and bland.

Benighted is a nice ballad, probably #2 on the album.  Short n' sweet.

Moonlapse Vertigo is muddy and bland, again.

Face of Melinda is supposed to be a fan favorite, but I don't see what's so great about it.  Sure, it's nice, but nothing compared to songs like Coil, Hours of Wealth, and Isolation Years.

Serenity Painted Death - Again, another boring song.

White Cluster - Boring, again.

I'm sorry, but Still Life is just a boring album, where Ghost Reveries is very emotional, very fear-inducing, very...moving.  Hard to describe.  The only "eh" songs (and they are only "eh" by comparison with the others on the album) are Baying of the Hounds and Beneath the Mire.  Everything else is flawless as far as I can tell.

Honestly, Still Life was always my least favorite of their classic era (Still Life through Ghost Reveries), for similar reasons you mentioned. But you'll warm up to it.

What I do recommend you do, is get Blackwater Park and Deliverance, and then come back and try and make the same arguments you made before.

Thank you darkshade for not being belittling.

Ghost of Perdition is the only good Opeth album anyway so this discussion is irrelevant.

I never cared for that one :neverusethis:

it's a great album man you should give it a spin sometime

Can I have a link?

No. It's so rare that it's not even on Youtube or Grooveshark. Only true fans have access to it. Apparently, you're not one of them.

What a shame.

:(  Could I possibly trade in my lock of Mikael's hair and get it?

I's actually say the classic era is MAYH through Damnation/Deliverence.

Thank you darkshade for not being belittling.

No problem, I don't like it when it's done to me.

I used to only enjoy The Moor, Benighted, and Face of Melinda from Still Life, but after I got to know the following 3 albums, I eventually got into the whole album (this is around the time Ghost Reveries came out, or maybe before the album came out.). I say give it time, and also check out their other albums from the classic era, then go back and see how you feel.

Actually, you're right about MAYH, I actually consider that part of the classic era (I was thinking about SL so much, I forgot about MAYH)

But why don't you include GR in that? It's the same lineup as the previous 2 (technically 5) albums (per was there on D & D, just wasn't a permanent member until GR) and stylistically isn't much different than previous albums.

I always saw GR as the "peak" of that lineup, all the previous albums were leading up to it.

I'm not sure why I don't consider it a part of that era. That's just how it appears to me. That isn't saying anything about the album though, I absolutely love it.

1) Still Life is incredible. It's the best Opeth album ever.

2) I don't think there's a classic Opeth era.

Working from home today, had Ghost Reveries playing at a healthy volume.  At the conclusion of Isolation Years, this single cranks up being next in my iTunes library (sorted alphabetically): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elueA2rofoo  When she said that first statement so loud, the juxtaposition between it and what just concluded made me nearly fall out of the chair laughing.  I think Opeth should have this in their pre-show music.

It's case by case. I think if I got a piece of Angela Gossow and she started going into the chorus from Ravenous I'd let loose with force sufficient to knock Jupiter out of orbit.

Okay, just give me some homework.  I've listened to SL maybe 10 times, always as an album listen.  How do I appreciate it?

I have no idea man. Godhead's Lament was the first Opeth song I ever heard, and the first death metal song I ever really gave a chance; I was in love by the second listen nad it's still my favorite Opeth song ever, so I have no idea what the fuck is wrong with you.

See, I don't think that part is that great, certainly not compared to sections in GR like "climbing ever higher" and "nocturnally helpless".

The Face of Melinda is awesome because of that epic transition halfway through the song. It's so beautiful and has such a great groove at the beginning, then dies down right before the guitars just cut through the quiet. Fantastic song and one of the first Opeth songs I really got into since the growls were a new thing for me too.

As for Serenity Painted Death...

DAT FUCKING RIFF
Cole: "Ow I just got hit in the balls"
Me: "How?"
Cole: "Well you know when you try to scratch your balls, and you scratch too hard?
I'll admit sometimes I want to listen to Dragonforce.

Come on dude, that's like saying I won't eat a fantastic burger cuz it doesn't hold a candle to a ribeye. I think Serenity Painted Death may be your best shot at getting into that album since it's got that groovin verse riff and the clean section at 4:27 lays a smooth transition to Mikael's scorchingly demonesque vocals starting at 5:28 which to date are probably his most crushing delivery yet.
