The song or the album?
The song is one of their best, but the album is not.

Honestly, I don't see what so impressive about BP, MAYH, SL, or any of the "oldies".

I've listened to SL a lot, seeing as it was my first Opeth album.  I've spun MAYH, Deliverance, BWP, and Orchid a couple times too and I just don't see what's so great about them.  They lack dynamic, or something.  Haven't listened to Damnation or Morningrise though.

They lack DYNAMIC?

Wow.
At least compared to GR.  I usually don't like songs that are straight up death metal with loud indecipherable riffs.  GR has the perfect balance of clean and heavy, and even when it's heavy, the sound is still crisp.  I think every song on GR has at least one soft section, right?

Well, that's where I disagree.  Before GR, they just sounded muddy.

...um, Letters was saying "no shit" to your question of having clean sections on every heavy song.  I mean, its what they DO.  Even Demon of the Fall has cleaner, melodic stuff in there.  The muddiness on their first two albums is a production thing, but they fixed it up quite a bit on MAYH, and BWP's production is very good and have none of those "indecipherable death metal riffs" you're talking about.

I''ll have to listen to them again.  I guess I'm more of a fan of melody-driven "obvious"-sounding music, which is probably why I like GR and WS the most.  From what I've gathered, you guys like atmospheric, dreamy music, which might be why you like those better.

I find it a bit odd that you said the earlier ones lacked dynamic against Ghost Reveries, of all albums.  Maybe this is just me, but I consider that one to be a fair bit less exciting than most of the albums that you are contending with, and I do believe that has to do with the dynamics, at least insofar as the changes in mood, if not style.  To me that album is just a bit similar and boring in terms of pretty much keeping the exact same mood throughout and not really doing much with it.

I could understand his sentiments for the first 2 or 3 albums, but from Still Life onwards, there is a lot of dynamics, most of the riffs are heavy, not necessarily death metal riffs, I wouldn't call much of anything from SL-GR "muddy", and there are some cleaner moments throughout.

Ghost Reveries is actually the same kind of album as Still Life, BWP, and Deliverance, it's just there is more presence of keyboards and more atmosphere (the reason I like it the most btw)

I'd probably rank Ghost Reveries third behind Blackwater Park and Still Life which is my favorite album of theirs.  However, Ghost Reveries does contain my favorite Opeth song which is Ghost of Perdition.

But seriously, BWP is melody-driven, "obvious," and has its fair share of the atmospheric acoustic parts.

Okay, let's take Still Life as our example, since it's the one I'm most familiar with.  The album starts off great with The Moor, which I really dig.  But the rest of the album is just...boring.  I dunno, I can't describe it.  Maybe I'll do a song-by-song to organize myself.

Godhead's Lament is muddy and bland.

Benighted is a nice ballad, probably #2 on the album.  Short n' sweet.

Moonlapse Vertigo is muddy and bland, again.

Face of Melinda is supposed to be a fan favorite, but I don't see what's so great about it.  Sure, it's nice, but nothing compared to songs like Coil, Hours of Wealth, and Isolation Years.

Serenity Painted Death - Again, another boring song.

White Cluster - Boring, again.

I'm sorry, but Still Life is just a boring album, where Ghost Reveries is very emotional, very fear-inducing, very...moving.  Hard to describe.  The only "eh" songs (and they are only "eh" by comparison with the others on the album) are Baying of the Hounds and Beneath the Mire.  Everything else is flawless as far as I can tell.

No. It's so rare that it's not even on Youtube or Grooveshark. Only true fans have access to it. Apparently, you're not one of them.

What a shame.
