I'm going to do the same thing I'm doing for DT and not listen to the single until the album comes out. Especially for Opeth, I much prefer listening if I've never heard a song from the album before, as their albums have such a great atmosphere.

But your comments have got me really excited!!! Can't wait :D

The Opeth song was good, but I hope the rest of the album is a lot better.

After listening to it 3 times my current opinion is that I... really don't like it, at all.  The vocal melodies felt consistently awkward and out of place throughout the chorus and the verse.  Hell, even the vocals themselves (and this is a complaint that I seldom have when it comes to Opeth) just feel wrong.  Also, the instrumental section was so remorselessly wanna-be psychedelic proggy-woggy-wiggy nonsense that it was almost difficult to bear.  I really hope that the rest of Heritage is not of the same quality.

I liked it a little more on my second listen, but its a middling Opeth song so far, but I like the direction.  While I have no problem with growling, between this album and Damnation hopefully we can get some converts.

Actually, that was much my thought as well. I like it, but I really don't know what to think of it. Despite Michael's assertions to the contrary, it has a definite retro, classic rock kind of feel to it, albeit from a weird world where Deep Purple and Camel got together and had a kid. It's...odd, to say the least.

Sounds a lot like Watershed, really. Just a little more jazz influence and more of the so-called "70's sound."

But I think the "god is dead" verse would have been better in the "deliverance" Mikael vocals.

I really like it. Journalists who heard the album said it's a surprising decision to release it as a single and I see why.

Actually, I think it would work well either way. If done with death growls, it would imply anger, evil, darkness etc. With his clean vocals it gives me a sense of painful desperation. It's all about the emotion they were trying to convey, and they're clearly not trying to be evil this time around.

Just saying it's a preference.

Hearing his vocals on Stand got me all excited for new Mikael evilness... now I may never get it...  :-\

Clean vocals throughout? Sign me up... maybe this will finally help me "get" Opeth.

That was just a big WTF for me. I asked my sister today if she had heard the new Opeth song yet, and she got the most mortified look on her face and nodded. Clearly not impressed either. :lol

Clean vocals are one thing, because the last album had plenty of that, and was still very metal. But with the obvious attempt at trying to sound proggy 70s with that drum sound and fuzz guitar and loud hammond, I don't expect this album to be metal. It wants to be prog. And for me personally, that's not a good thing.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.

Really in love with the track overall, but there's one vocal line in the middle of the song that keeps sounding really far fetched for me. Some death vox wouldn't have hurt the song, but most of the clean vocals are really good. He got the screamy clean vox going on in the verses which he already tried on Bridge of Sighs and they sound pretty badass!

The weirdest part def is the drums, bass and vox part. I keep having trouble discovering in which key he's singing, but when the guitars come in it gives a cool effect. Oh, and that guitar chord, could that be a little nod to Metropolis?

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Mikael's a huge fan of DT, he got into them when Images came out and he has all their records. So it could be intentional.

Man, I keep wishing the guitar solo was longer. It's so freakin' orgasmic. So well placed in the track. I'm definately gonna see them live this November, and with PoS as special guest.. that's amazing.

After my first listen to the song, I must say it's underwhelming.  Nothing grabbed me, and it needs some growls.  Mikael's clean voice isn't that strong nor varied enough to completelly leave out the growls IMHO.

Nevertheless it still sounds like Opeth.  I commend then for doing something different, I am still looking forward to the albums release.

I'm very glad they went in that direction. I don't know how some growls would've fit in that particular song honestly. Looking forward to the album!

I like it a lot. No growling is only a good thing IMO, I have never found growls to be musically interesting anyway. Growls can only make songs worse, and I think the record will be very good.

So so so so so wrong.  I do agree, however, that growls really can't fit in with th emusic on this album.

A matter of taste. Growls have never sounded anything but silly and ugly to my ears, it's just screaming with no dynamics. Singing > screaming in music. Screaming > singing if you're afraid. I do however like Opeth songs with growls, but they would have been better without them for me personally. Opeth is so varied and dynamic anyway, that it doesn't destroy it for me. Straight DM & BM on the other hand...

A good growl/scream can have as much dynamic as clean singing. But hey, tastes and opinions.

No dynamics?  Have you LISTENED to "Blackwater Park?"  Not preferring growls is one thing, saying they have no dynamics is silly.  Also, screaming/growling requires an INSANE amount of talent, practice, and refinement.  To imply that those who scream are "afraid" to sing is also just as silly.
