rob, I know what you mean by Absolution being a wearying listen.  I like almost all of the songs on it a lot, but from start to finish, it comes off as a collection of songs rather than a well-flowing record, and the sound of it is a bit annoying.  Okay, most Muse albums reek of compression (damn Loudness Wars), but it is the most noticeably distracting on Absolution.  I can barely stomach the studio version of Stockholm Syndrome anymore since it is absolutely buried in compression.  Many compressed songs sound like you are listening to a song with a blanket over your speakers; Stockholm Syndrome sounds like three blankets are over your speakers.  I almost always listen to the live version from the Glastonbury show (that was on the Absolution tour DVD as an extra, that I ripped the audio from) rather than the studio version.

But again, it's not like I don't really like it; I do!  I just wish it sounded better.  I hope that they re-release all of their albums someday to be more audio-friendly.
That could very well be it! I've not quite been able to put my finger on it, because the album's full to the brim with great songs. It's hit after hit after hit. In fact, I'd say the only song I don't have much time for is Ruled by Secrecy, and even that's got the intense piano bit. By the time I was hitting The Small Print the other day, though, it felt like it'd been on for about an hour.

The songs are good, the content's good, there's not a single track I wouldn't be stoked to see live. Butterflies & Hurricanes, in particular, is among my favourite songs of all time. But to hear it coming, song after song after song... it's relentless. And yeah, I'd say that could very well be down 50:50 to the structure and the production.

To contrast it with Black Holes, I've always felt that Black Holes is very well structured. It comes in distinct chapters - it has acts. Starlight goes well into Supermassive goes well into Map. Soldiers Poem and Invincible are a duo, that end "side one." Side two has a spaghetti western feel from the top of Assassin right to the last chord of Knights of Cydonia. With Absolution, though, each successive song is its own chapter. It's hit after hit after hit - and that might be the problem. Fantastic content, top notch music, but I don't enjoy the album as much as I feel I should. Add the claustrophobia of a very dense sound, and that might be exactly what's going on.

Very well-said!! :tup :tup

I'll be going to the St. Louis show, but looking at setlist.fm, I am disappointed to see that they are still doing relatively short shows.  Only 17 or 18 songs per show?  That is weak.  They should be doing two hour plus shows now with 22-23 songs played, not barely getting to the 1:45 mark.  Especially since when you factor in all of the new songs they will play plus the standards/hits from past albums, that barely leaves any time left for deeper cuts.

When I saw them on The Resistance tour I commented I was happy to see them then as they still could play some stuff that was older and not a big hit. I fear that as time winds on their set is going to become extremely predictable and boring.

Save Me and Liquid State are both top 3 or 4 songs on this album. In other words, more Chris please.

In general his slightly more straightforward approach helps to balance things out, and I think if Panic Station and maybe one other was swapped out for a Chris track as good as the two on the album this album would some prime Muse. As it stands it's definitely still a very nice return to form for them.

I don't like Chris' voice that much. I prefer Matt's voice, by far. I feel like Save Me and Liquid State are two of the worst tracks on the album.

No way should Panic Station be removed from this record.

Matt's voice is obviously better than Chris', but I still like Save Me quite a bit.  To me, it's like when Brian May or Roger Taylor when sing lead on a Queen song; sure, Freddie had the better voice and was the lead singer, but that doesn't mean that the other guys couldn't sing lead well as well.  Part of made Queen so awesome was not just Freddie's voice, but the other guys also singing lead and contributing to all of the vocal harmonies.  If Muse is gonna go that route, with Chris singing the occasional lead vocal, I am fine with it.  He has a pleasant-sounding voice, and it seems to fit their music well.

Agreed with all of this.

Panic Station is amazing.

And Chris has a really nice voice, especially in Save Me. I don't think he's right for the more rocking songs though - Liquid State just feels really flat to me, like the ideas are unfinished. I think it could have been a big song with Matt on vocals, but as it is it's pretty dull.

While it's awesome that you are digging Unsustainable, you fail for your opinion on the first few tracks. Follow Me isn't great, but Supremacy through to Survival is great!

^^  I actually was going to post about this. Muse is band that I'm not familiar with, that I tried to dig into but never got there. The first song I heard from them was on SNL, and it was Madness. Great song. Now I want to try and get into their stuff.

So typical noobie question, but where should I start! Song suggestions, albums, etc.

Showbiz if you like Alt-Rock/Grunge

I really like The Resistance and Black Holes and Revelations. Listen to all three parts of the Exogenesis Symphony if you're feeling symphonic, but I really enjoy all of The Resistance.

I don't know too much of their other stuff either, so I can't say I know their best stuff
Perhaps you should ask bosk to reverse the "e" and "a" in the second half of your user name.

I never understand why, when someone asks for recommendations, people just post their own favourite albums. :lol

Accelerando, if you like Madness, then you might dig Muse's more recent output; not that it's all like that, but sound and style-wise a lot of it is quite accessible. Black Holes & Revelations could be a good starting point for you, or try their latest The 2nd Law, which is a bit more experiemental.

Same, it's rather annoying. I generally won't recommend an album I dislike, but for those that I like I try and pick a combination of the most popular or accessible.

So typical noobie question, but where should I start! Song suggestions, albums, etc.

The 2nd Law's a good shout. Big, diverse, with lots of very striking songs which should, likely, hit you like Madness did. It's a very new album, not two weeks old, so reactions are a little unsettled at the moment. I don't know how fair an overview I can give you, or how likely it is that anyone who's not a massive Muse fan will like it. But it's the album with Madness on, and it's got a lot of rock songs, a lot of electronic songs, and I have a lot of fun listening to it. Hopefully, you will too.

Alternatively, Black Holes and Revelations is probably the next closest. Fourth album, widely considered to be among their best (but not so often their very best), and again very diverse. Sort of space-western theme to it from track seven onwards. I'd think, if you liked Madness, you'd stand a good chance at liking Starlight, Supermassive Black Hole or Map of the Problematique - and again, it's a very immediately striking album, which a couple of their albums aren't so much, so it might have a better chance of getting you into the band.

And I'll also vouch for The Resistance. It's like a sort of milder 2nd Law. Not as amazing as the above albums either side of it, but it's eleven pretty cool songs. Very safe album to start with. Mild-er, as opposed to mild, because it still ranges from glam rock T-Rex style calls-to-arms to Orwellian piano-rockers about Europe and Asia uniting to control the world, and it culminates in a three-part symphony about leaving the planet. But if The 2nd Law is Muse turned up to eleven, The Resistance is them dialled down to... oh, eight or so? That might be good, though. Might make it a very effective entry drug. And, again, there are songs that don't match, but are in a similar vein to Madness, which is true of the above two (one has a song that's identical) and not at all of the three below.

Of the other three:
- Absolution's full of cracking songs but it's too dense.
- Origin's great, and it's a grower that you should definitely get eventually... but it's a little difficult to absorb in places, and never sounds anything like Madness. The band's Awake.
- Showbiz is their first album and offers a very primordial view of what Muse is.

Er, from what I've seen, it's always seemed half and half. A lot of people love it. I think the only good songs on it are Take A Bow, Map Of The Problematique, and Knights Of Cydonia. The rest always sounded like filler to me.

But, ... but... City Of Delusion :(

Ruined by some random-ass horn section. Relistening to BH&R right now, and yeah, I still just don't see how this album is good. Map Of The Problematique is still a top 5 Muse song, but the rest, ugh. Supermassive Black Hole is absolutely terrible, and everything from track 5 to track 10 ruins itself by either droning on and on, or having some random noises/spaghetti western themes going on in them that just don't work for me. Only Knights... makes the western motif work.
Hire me. I'm talentless but malleable.
