Trial of Tears - a classic song. Awesome it made every list but also surprising, since so many don't seem to regard the album it's on it feels like a song that could be easy to forget. Not going to dwell on FII which overall I love but always amazed me that the album can begin with what I consider DTs worst song and end with one of their best. My rank 7.

Home - nailed it!! Also my number 5. I was totally blown away the first time I heard this track, such a great memory. Yes, has a strong TOOL influence but enough of everything else which makes DT great.

3 of my top 4 remain. Overall will end up 90/10.

25. Illumination Theory (91st) DREAM THEATER, IF YOU'RE READING THIS, DO MORE STUFF IN THE VEIN OF THE LAST FEW MINUTES OF THIS SONG. SO GOOD.
24. Beyond This Life (88th) I'm a SFAM hater, what can I say? It's an okay song though.
23. Bridges In The Sky (8th) This song could be top 5 but the intro is too long, it's otherwise a stellar song. When JLB sings "crossing bridges in the sky", it's so good.
22. In The Presence Of Enemies (28th) Cool epic on a weird album. I don't like the Dark Master part. Everything else is good. Odd song for DT, though.
21. Blind Faith (42nd) Easily the worst track of SDOIT but still just fine.
20. Surrounded (25th) What a lovely song. Just, so bouncy but then a bit serious. DT does this style of song nicely.
19. Finally Free (76th) SFAM, yeah....
18. Strange Deja Vu (89th) Lol. The "uncanny strange deja vu" does pop into my mind at times.
17. Take The Time (19th) The energy in this song is really vibrant. JLB is having fun and the music is good.
16. Under A Glass Moon (67th) It's a fine song, with a cool intro. It's always been the weakest or second weakest track on IaW to me, though.
15. The Glass Prison (3rd) This is 15th and I am shocked. I know some of the songs remaining, but I thought this was one of the most favored songs. Interesting. Anyway, this song is just pure gas for a long time.
14. Pull Me Under (77th) This and UAGM are fine songs, but they can swap being the worst or 2nd worst on the album, but they have stiff competition. Also surprised this is so high, is it because it's their most famous song?
13. Fatal Tragedy (90th) What a canyon between my ranking and the consensus. Yeah, it's a SFAM song, for some reason that album doesn't gel with me.
12. Scarred (69th) It's a fine song, but I often forget how it even sounds when I see it talked about.
11. In The Name Of God (13th) Hell yeah. I avoided this song for a while when this album was the new stuff, IDK why, I just was loving the rest of the album and this was the last song. It is pretty much flawless. I love the choir at the end, subtle enough to enjoy (and JLB's screaming as well).
10. The Count Of Tuscany (6th) This (and several other songs) are what DT do best in the modern era (I am thinking post-8VM). You can have the metal in "prog metal" but don't leave behind the prog, or the beautiful melodies and tight compositions. The intro might be a top 5, maybe a top 3 DT intro, musically speaking. The ending is great, it's fun to sing and play on the acoustic (capo on 4th fret).
09. Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence (4th) I hate ranking this as a single song. Like others, this is a collection of 8 different ideas/tracks/songs, but they're all great songs (maybe besides Goodnight Kiss, that one is decent). But since we have to bow to the wishes of the almighty band, here we are. Not my actual 4th favorite, but yeah, each part is a great picture of different mental illnesses. Favorites include Solitary Shell, The Test..., and Losing Time.
08. Breaking All Illusions (11th) 3rd best song from the MM era. It just slaps, and it does it better than Learning to Live.
07. Voices (40th) Excellent song, but 7th?! Wow. But I think I get it, it's not a prog epic but an emotional song with a lot of good stuff.
06. Trial Of Tears (31st) Great song from a weird era. Not on the hype train to be 6th best, that is pretty mind-blowing to me.
05. Home (65th) I don't get why people rate this so highly. I deduced it would be in the top 6, and I gave it a listen today and...yeah, there is some powerful music happening there, I can kinda see it being a big hit, but to make top 5, I don't know what I am missing.

06. Trial of Tears - (#16)

This was my favorite song when I first got into the band. It's gone down a bit, but that's only because I discovered other songs I enjoy much more. I still love it, and I hope to get to see it one day. I love the opening atmosphere with the guitar and bass. The calm verse is amazing. I also enjoy Derek's solo. The Wasteland is my favorite part with how it builds into the sort of uplifting outro.

05. Home - (#14)

Same as the above. Although I got to see it 4 times in two different forms. The first was at Gigantour, which I barely remember. The 2nd when they opened for Maiden, it was the shortened version (I also found a bootleg of this show, so it's awesome to get to listen to the exact show I saw). The last time was for the Distant Scenes tour, which I went to two dates. I like the Metropolis references, and I consider this the main high of SFAM.
I don't know how they can be so proud of winning with them odds. - Little Big Man

I had Trial Of Tears at #30.
I feel like this should be higher on my list, but I'm not sure what I'd bump. This is a great song, but I've never considered it a Top 20 DT song.

I had Home as Not Rated.

Trial of Tears came in at 59.  Just never loved it as much as most, but it's still fantastic.

Voices is similar to Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, in that I've always loved the song, but it has grown on me much more in recent years. It's got such a dark, rich atmosphere, with stellar performances from every band member. What I love most about this song, though, is the lyrics. These lyrics speak to me on a very deep and personal level, possibly more than any other song I've ever known. To call this song a masterpiece would be an understatement. I could say #7 is too low for this ranking, but honestly my ranking at #4 doesn't do it enough justice, either. So thank you, Kev, for putting this song where it belongs.

Oh, and Breaking All Illusions, Trial of Tears, and Home are pretty cool, too.

2 good songs that have never reached elite level status with me.

Trial of Tears 26
The first (and maybe only) song to make every list That is crazy, I never would have predicted that.

Not sure there's a more mundane and boring song in their catalog for me. The middle eastern flair at the beginning is an instant turn off. The last 30-45 seconds are the only redeeming part of this song.

My man! Much respect, I wouldn't be sad if Home didn't make the cut. If I knew more of DT's stuff, it might leave my top 100.

One other thing I do like about Home is the guitar solo, which kind of sounds like Scarred a bit.

But I genuinely do find myself skipping it when I listen to SFAM.

I thought I was the only detractor!  :rollin

At least I find the second half of the song (well…the entire instrumental outro after the final chorus, however long that is) to be amazing.

I went back to look at the top 100 list I submitted in 2021 when we did this before (I did not submit one this time). I had Home at 32, above a few songs that I think of more favorably as I sit here now. I'd probably have it closer to 40 if I were re-ranking now. I don't hate the song, but top 5 is certainly a bit high for my tastes.

I have a lot of catching up to do, and we have arrived at some of my favourites.

28. Lines in the Sand (21). I have always preferred this to Trial of Tears, there just seems to be a lot more going on.
27. The Mirror (92). Another of their first heavier songs, I enjoy this one more than Lie.
26. The Spirit Carries On (26). One of their best ballads, it was great to hear this live with Devin Townsend singing part of it.

25. Illumination Theory (19). The intro and the second section are my favourite parts, though the introduction of the orchestra in the third section is also a very beautiful moment. 4th section kind of sounds like a precursor to the sound on DoT. Minor nitpick, but like At Wit's End the fadeout before the song continues is a bit too long. What we get after it though is a very pleasant outro. This is a very good epic, there may not be one specific bit I can point out and say this is an all-time great DT moment, but it is just solid all around.

24. Beyond This Life (23). Another great cut from Scenes, the intro is great and there are some very cool sounds in the instrumental section.
23. Bridges in the Sky (8). The beginning with the throat singing and choir is so iconic. I remember the first time hearing it having no idea what was going on, then suddenly they go full throttle. The instrumental section is great, and the chorus is powerful.
22. In the Presence of Enemies (35). Part 1 of this song is amazing, they jump right into the action. I just wish Part 2 was as good as the first. I like the softer parts a lot, but when they try to get heavier it does not all work for me.
21. Blind Faith (12). Really dig the more moodier verses at the start. Also, some of Jordan's best work is in the incredible instrumental section.
20. Surrounded (67). The main middle chunk is good but the intro and outro are wonderful.

19. Finally Free (6). This is the song that turns Scenes from a very good album into one of my favourites of all time. They could have ended it after Spirit Carries On, and it would have still been great, but they ended on an emotional gut punch instead. The beginning of the song and the title itself lures you into a false sense of security thinking maybe this is just an epilogue of sorts. We have finished our session with the hypnotherapist, and it is time to go home. But then the tone becomes ominous, we are thrust back into the past, and wow that piano line is so good! I really like how they play with the "This feeling inside me" lyrics in various ways to represent the different characters. The middle section with the actual events of the fateful night is another one of their most haunting sections. Then you follow it up with the One Last Time reprise and a powerful final chorus. The song ends with a wonderful heavy outro. They really could not have ended this album better.

18. Strange Deja Vu (59). Good song overshadowed by other songs from the same album.
17. Take the Time. (17). One of the first DT songs I listened to. It's quite groovy and is one of their more catchy songs.
16. Under a Glass Moon (72). JP's solo is definitely the highlight here.
15. The Glass Prison (37). This is one of their quintessential heavier cuts, it has a great intro and guitar riff.
14. Pull Me Under (31). It was popular for a reason, this song sounds great, and the second verse is one of James' best moments.
13. Fatal Tragedy (11). Very theatrical, with a dark and heavy atmosphere. One of their rare songs where backing vocals add to the music rather than being at best neutral. The instrumental section is great, and I love the last minute especially.
12. Scarred (39). I like James' vocals on this one a lot.

11. In the Name of God (5). This best represents the heavy side of Dream Theater for me. The lead-up to the chorus is great, and it will return later on. Nice change of pace in the middle section, as they get softer before slowly ramping up the intensity. Then a more technical instrumental section. I like the various twists and turns this song goes through. The ending is what cements this as one of my favourites, as the melody right before the chorus is used again to end the song dramatically. This is one of their most powerful endings, and I love how the instruments drop off until only the piano is left.

10. The Count of Tuscany (2). This starts off with my favourite intro in any DT song, and there is stiff competition. Such a memorable guitar line. Once all the instruments join in, it's just perfect. This whole section is over 3 minutes long, so it never feels too short. The next section of the song is more heavy, and I like the 9/4 melody they have going on at the start. Initially, the middle section was the barrier to my full enjoyment of this song, as it somewhat stopped the momentum. I no longer feel the same way, possibly in part due to hearing it performed live. Compared to the previous tone this conveys the feeling of a light in the darkness. I can close my eyes here and feel at peace inside. Then, the final section is so powerful. I have not mentioned the lyrics yet, but to me, they don't really matter. The emotions are all conveyed perfectly through the music, and the lyrics only try to give some context to those emotions. The song ends wonderfully, coming full circle with the intro.

9. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (3). I have to respect that a song this long does not really have a dull moment. All the transitions between the different sections are smooth, and the lyrics about mental health are some of their most powerful. The Overture introduces all of the main themes of the suite. Both parts of About To Crash are somehow uplifting despite their subject matter. War Inside My Head and The Test That Stumped Them All both showcase heavier elements, with the latter being a favourite. Goodnight Kiss is another haunting track on the album that already gave us Disappear. Solitary Shell is my favourite section of the suite. Like About To Crash, there is a dichotomy between the tone and the lyrics. I love the lyrical idea of a 'Solitary Shell' in general. The emotional Losing Time/Grand Finale wraps up the suite. All of the instrumental passages throughout the various sections work very well. This is certainly a great achievement.

8. Breaking All Illusions (7). The intro is great, and I consider the first vocal section to be more of a breather in between the very technical instrumental sections. Some interesting call and response after the first chorus. JP's solo later on is one of my favourites from him. Then it's back into more technical instrumentals which are some of their best. Nice reprise of Far From Heaven in the ending.
7. Voices (30). Starts off very mysterious but gets powerful with the chorus. I like the second verse a lot.
6. Trial of Tears (38). I think I might have enjoyed this more if they trimmed it down a bit. Still a good song.
5. Home (16). Not an immediate song for me, but it is now a main highlight from Scenes. Like Finally Free, I love how they play with variations on the lyrics depending on which character is speaking.

The remaining songs are in my #1, #4, #10, and #15 spot.

1, 2, 4, 6.

When I made the prediction that only two songs at maximum will make every list, I was, among many others, firmly banking on Tim's leaving Home off. I am glad he didn't disappoint.

As for the rest, it's 5, 20, 26, 40 for me.

Trial of Tears (16) A great song that gets bumped up by being on a very sub-par album and which, on its own power alone, can redeem that very album, even if some other good stuff like LITS had been left out.
Home (8)  One tad bellow  the S+ tier. For DT standards, it's actually quite repetitive and does not change the mood and tempo the way other top tier songs do. Still, it has so much else going for it that these are just minor quibbles.

Top 10 so far

1. The Killing Hand
2. Voices
3. Scarred
4. The Mirror
5.
6. Breaking of All Illusions
7. Space-Dye Vest
8.Home
9. The Count of Tuscany

Octavarium- My #3. What an absolute legend of a song. We start with a cool Pink Floyd intro and then get some great drum and bass work in Someone Like Him and into Medicate. JP kills it all throughout Full Circle, and then Intervals builds furiously to the glorious climax JLB delivers. Then, Razor's Edge swoops in to close things out with an absolute stunner of a JP solo to end things on a high note (literally). Phenomenal on the studio album, and being there to see it at Radio City remains an all-time live music highlight.
Photobucket sucks.

Octavarium ranked #5 for me, right behind my holy trinity (so far Voices was revealed, at number 3) and the song that made me love DT, The Mirror, ranking at 4.

Octavarium is an absolute masterpiece. A continuous crescendo of emotions and intensity. I don't find wacky the Full Circle section, it's very clever lyrics wise. I basically like every movement, and the ending is one of the greatest endings ever. Witnessing the live performance, being there in the heat of the moment, enjoying the whole solo and then the final note hits....... such an overwhelming (in the most positive sense) emotion. An eargasm if there ever was one.

Congrats to all those who have it at their favorite song!

I had it at #31. It's obviously a good song, but I've never understood what makes it such a masterpiece. I listened to it again yesterday to try and "get it", but it doesn't really do much for me.

The only parts of Octavarium that I really like are the instrumental section and the guitar solo on the outro. The Haken solo at the beginning is ok but goes on too long, the first vocal section is too sing-songy (and didn’t we just hear this song? It was called Six Degrees of Innerr Turbulence). Then the full circle part is just so corny. The band really jumped the shark for me with “trapped inside this octavari- uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuummmmmmmm.”

So next to Trial of Tears, Octavarium is the second song that makes all the list. An absolutely gorgious masterpiece which took a while to digest, but I enjoy every single minute of it and it is compositionally the very best piece they've ever written. Without a doubt.

Daily Doug's reaction surely helped me digesting the song, so take the time if you feel so...

Octavarium (20)
A bit too long, often great, sometimes of uneven quality. It gets a bump by being on otherwise not so good album, plus a long song bump (I can't help but be affected by these, even if I know they have little to do with an actual song quality). But I'll probably never buy into a notion that it's one of the best things DT have ever done - but the regularity with which it is listed in various Top 5s or 10s of best DT songs shows that I am the odd one here.
