Incredible song with an incredible solo. I always felt like this song is loved by many but maybe not discussed as much as some of the other top 20 tracks.

BAI.... #9 for me, so I'm pretty darn close.  This was so refreshing to have them go back to the 90s style after the first two RR albums and the experiments that came along with them.  Flawless in every way... great lyrics, two excellent guitar solos, James sounds as good as anything post 8vm, great sounding instrumental section.  Seeing it 1st row in AZ after a nice DTF meetup, and getting a fistbump from JP after the second solo was pure bliss.

Voices.... 13.  I rated it hand in hand with Erotomania.  Great song, with some of James' best vocal passages ever.

@ Gregg... SDOIT at #1.  How are you and Ale a match!?!?!  :lol

I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".

Breaking All Illusions - 17

The clear standout track from the MM era for me, it stands above all the other songs. Great JM lyrics and bass groove, a lovely instrumental section, and James does a very good vocal job.

Voices - 44

A dark, moody, and heavy song from Awake. I guess I could have ranked it a bit higher, but it is what it is. Great JP solo though.
Zydar is my new hero.  I just laughed so hard I nearly shat.

I had Breaking All Illusions at #9.
My highest rated Mangini track.  An instant DT classic.

I had Voices at #27.
I agree with Reaper, where I do think this song gets lost in discussion, but being #8 is damn affirming.

25. Illumination Theory (91st) DREAM THEATER, IF YOU'RE READING THIS, DO MORE STUFF IN THE VEIN OF THE LAST FEW MINUTES OF THIS SONG. SO GOOD.
24. Beyond This Life (88th) I'm a SFAM hater, what can I say? It's an okay song though.
23. Bridges In The Sky (8th) This song could be top 5 but the intro is too long, it's otherwise a stellar song. When JLB sings "crossing bridges in the sky", it's so good.
22. In The Presence Of Enemies (28th) Cool epic on a weird album. I don't like the Dark Master part. Everything else is good. Odd song for DT, though.
21. Blind Faith (42nd) Easily the worst track of SDOIT but still just fine.
20. Surrounded (25th) What a lovely song. Just, so bouncy but then a bit serious. DT does this style of song nicely.
19. Finally Free (76th) SFAM, yeah....
18. Strange Deja Vu (89th) Lol. The "uncanny strange deja vu" does pop into my mind at times.
17. Take The Time (19th) The energy in this song is really vibrant. JLB is having fun and the music is good.
16. Under A Glass Moon (67th) It's a fine song, with a cool intro. It's always been the weakest or second weakest track on IaW to me, though.
15. The Glass Prison (3rd) This is 15th and I am shocked. I know some of the songs remaining, but I thought this was one of the most favored songs. Interesting. Anyway, this song is just pure gas for a long time.
14. Pull Me Under (77th) This and UAGM are fine songs, but they can swap being the worst or 2nd worst on the album, but they have stiff competition. Also surprised this is so high, is it because it's their most famous song?
13. Fatal Tragedy (90th) What a canyon between my ranking and the consensus. Yeah, it's a SFAM song, for some reason that album doesn't gel with me.
12. Scarred (69th) It's a fine song, but I often forget how it even sounds when I see it talked about.
11. In The Name Of God (13th) Hell yeah. I avoided this song for a while when this album was the new stuff, IDK why, I just was loving the rest of the album and this was the last song. It is pretty much flawless. I love the choir at the end, subtle enough to enjoy (and JLB's screaming as well).
10. The Count Of Tuscany (6th) This (and several other songs) are what DT do best in the modern era (I am thinking post-8VM). You can have the metal in "prog metal" but don't leave behind the prog, or the beautiful melodies and tight compositions. The intro might be a top 5, maybe a top 3 DT intro, musically speaking. The ending is great, it's fun to sing and play on the acoustic (capo on 4th fret).
09. Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence (4th) I hate ranking this as a single song. Like others, this is a collection of 8 different ideas/tracks/songs, but they're all great songs (maybe besides Goodnight Kiss, that one is decent). But since we have to bow to the wishes of the almighty band, here we are. Not my actual 4th favorite, but yeah, each part is a great picture of different mental illnesses. Favorites include Solitary Shell, The Test..., and Losing Time.
08. Breaking All Illusions (11th) 3rd best song from the MM era. It just slaps, and it does it better than Learning to Live.
07. Voices (40th) Excellent song, but 7th?! Wow. But I think I get it, it's not a prog epic but an emotional song with a lot of good stuff.

Breaking All Illusions- I had this up at #6. As others have said, the clear standout track from the Mangini era and I love seeing it place so high. It's got a killer chorus and then the middle section starting at about 5 minutes through JP's epic solo is just God tier DT instrumental work.

Voices -  I was just a touch below, #9 on my list. Great lyrics that are delivered with aplomb by JLB, and the whole song is a JP masterclass, rhythm and lead.
Photobucket sucks.

Weekend catch-up post:

16 Under A Glass Moon - fantastic song, although I had it a little lower than the consensus, at # 24.  Absolutely one of JP's best solos.

15 The Glass Prison - Again, I had it slightly lower than the consensus, ranking it at # 21.  I LOVE this song.  I will never forget the first time I heard it.  It physically affected me.

14 Pull Me Under - In DT history, the importance of this song cannot be overstated.  However, I could rank it no higher than # 30, and if they never again played it live, that would be fine with me lol

13 Fatal Tragedy - Fantastic song, I have it at # 18.

12 Scarred - Just a glorious marriage of music composition and lyrics.  I have it at # 5 on my list.

11 In The Name of God - Very good track, although I apparently like it less than the consensus, ranking it at # 37.

10 The Count of Tuscany - DNR.  This song just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.  I see that I was one of only two people who left this one off.  lol

09 Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence - Another fantastic song that I like a little less than the consensus, ranking it at # 20.  I had this a lot higher at one time, but things change, I suppose.

08 Breaking All Illusions - Along with Illumination Theory, the best song from the Mangini era.  I had it at # 11.

07 Voices - Just an all-time classic, another fantastic marriage between music composition and lyrics, which happened a lot on Awake - which is why it's their best album.  I was right with the consensus on this one, ranking it # 7.

And with that, 5 of my top 6 still alive.  They will all make the list, and I'm pretty sure I know what the 6th will be as well.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Voices is a really powerful and pretty unique DT song. It’s one I have to be in the mood to tackle just because it’s so dark and intense, but I can understand why it would be a top 10 track for them. James gives an incredible performance, and you have one of JP’s most emotional solos as well here. It’s something I’m more likely to listen to only if I’m spinning Awake as a whole. But it is very good.

Breaking All Illusions: 13. Bottom of the the Pantheon, I suspect for longevity reasons. From #13 upwards in my rankings what makes the difference is mainly a matter of personal infatuation, since musically and songwriting-wise all these tunes have climbed the Everest, and how can you say who climbed the Everest more?

Voices: 10. The most intense DT experience.

The Score so far:

2 - Scarred
3 - The Spirit Carries On
4 - Lines in the Sand
5 - In the Presence of Enemies
7 - Misunderstood
9 - Space-Dye Vest
10 -  Voices
11 - Beyond This Life
13 - Breaking All Illusions
14 - Stream of Consciousness
16 - Under a Glass Moon
17 - Bridges in the Sky
19 - Illumination Theory
21 - A New Beginning
23 - Disappear
24 - Pull Me Under
25 - Surrounded
26 - Fatal Tragedy
27 - The Best of Times
28 - Outcry
31 - Erotomania
32 - Strange Deja-Vu
33 - Surrender to Reason
34 - Take the Time
35 - Finally Free
36 - This Is the Life
38 - Hell's Kitchen
39 - The Count of Tuscany
42 - Another Day
43 - One Last Time
45 - Vacant
46 - The Gift of Music
47 - Beneath the Surface

Breaking all illusions was my #22. It ended up being my 2nd favorite song of the Mangini era. Such an amazing piece of work in every single way. The guys still had it in them and were truly rejuvenated. I'm not at all surprised to see it in the top ten.

Voices was my #40. It's a classic, but there is a handful of songs on Awake that I like better. Scarred has always been the better epic in my opinion.

@ Gregg... SDOIT at #1.  How are you and Ale a match!?!?!  :lol

I'm not sure what you mean. Didn't Ale rank it somewhere in the 50's?

Exactly... I mean how are you a personality match when musical tastes (at least in this case) are so varied?

Most likely differences in our musical journeys. My love for 6°OIT is rooted in the following: My pre-adolescent years were saturated in classical and orchestral music, my early teens were saturated in 70's art rock, middle teens classic rock, late teens and early twenties were obsessed with metal. 6° is, in my mind, a perfect execution of everything I love in music. It's thematic, bombastic, intimate, angry, haunting, and beautiful by turns. I honestly can't think of anything I'd rather listen to.

I think which songs are in the Top 6 are fairly obvious at this point, although not the order thereof.

True... and for each song that's left off of someone's list, one should get some Arab whipping on the back on a crowded square somewhere in the Middle East. To say the least...

08 Breaking All Illusions - Had it at #81. Can't say why, because I do dig it. Cool to see a Mangini-era track ranking this high!

07 Voices - Had it at #69, I guess because of the subject matter. What I've learned is that even though Awake is probably my favorite album, it's not necessarily because of the longer pieces! But that doesn't take anything away from this track, which is a monster in its own right.

I think which songs are in the Top 6 are fairly obvious at this point, although not the order thereof.

Indeed! Could an octopus beat the housing market? Will schools prevail over larger cities? Where does weeping factor into all of this? What about the weather?

Yet another big catch up post for me:

40.   Erotomania - 75 - I like it, but it isn't my favorite instrumental.
39.   Stream Of Consciousness - 49 - Very epic.
38.   Another Day - 41 - Love the saxophone.  This one has slipped a bit for me over the years, but it is still great.
37.   At Wit's End - 77 - Twas one of my favorites from DOT, but my enjoyment has diminished quite a bit since 2019.
36.   The Root Of All Evil - 7 - Hey, another top one for me.  This is the first DT song I ever saw live (2005 Gigantour) and has remained a favorite ever since then.
35.   Lifting Shadows Off A Dream - 40 - Lovely and something different for DT.
34.   6:00 - 23 - Would have been top 10 for me 5ish years ago.  That drum intro is awesome.
33.   The Dance Of Eternity 21 - Epic, but without being too long.  This is instrumental perfection.
32.   Overture 1928 - 44 - See above.  This one should be higher on the list for me.
31.   Misunderstood - 59 - I just started to enjoy this one within the past few years.
30.   Space-Dye Vest - 34 - Lovely.  Hate I missed seeing it on the 2013/2014 tour.
29.   Endless Sacrifice - 17 - Was my first favorite DT song and helped lead to me becoming a big fan.
28.   Lines In The Sand - NR - Doesn't do it for me.  I need to give it another chance.
27.   The Mirror - 42 - Awesome rock song.
26.   The Spirit Carries On - 4 - The one DT song my wife enjoys.  I've always thought this could have been their mega (crossover?) hit song.  Maybe it could have been if it had been promoted as such.  A huge missed opportunity IMO.
25.   Illumination Theory - 28 - The last few minutes of this song are incredible.
24.   Beyond This Life - 19 - Hell fucking yeah!  What a song.
23.   Bridges In The Sky - 39 - One of the best from the MM era.  Awesome song to begin a concert with.
22.   In The Presence Of Enemies - 9 - The intro of this song is unfuckingbelievable.  Certain portions of the song (Dark master of sin) are fairly cringe, but the rest of the song makes up for those portions.  I hate they broke the song up on the album.
21.   Blind Faith - UR - I just don't get this one.
20.   Surrounded - 12 - I love this song so much.
19.   Finally Free - 18 - Great ending to a fantastic album.
18.   Strange Deja Vu - 10 - This song along with Overture 1928 blew me a way the first time I listened to Scenes.  They both still do.
17.   Take The Time - 36 - Great song, but it has started to slip for me recently.
16.   Under A Glass Moon - 43 - I enjoy it, but it has consistently been my least favorite from Images and Words.  Still made it to 43 though.
15.   The Glass Prison - 22 - I didn't really care for this song until 5-6 years ago.  Now I love it.  Rocks my fucking socks off.
14.   Pull Me Under - 26 - The hit!  The crowd reaction to this song is always fun live.  It is impossible not to sing the chorus.
13.   Fatal Tragedy - 16 - Fantastic song.  The chorus is so catchy.
12.   Scarred - 52 - Decent, but not a top tier favorite for me.
11.   In The Name Of God - 8 - I recall seeing the song length when I purchased Budokan (I bought that before any of the studio albums when I first got interested in DT) and being put off from listening to it.  When I finally did, I was blown away.  It has never felt like an epic song and goes by quickly.  Hell of a track.
10.   The Count Of Tuscany - 20 - I hated this song when it first came out - the lyrics and such were a serious turn off.  Finally started to give it a chance again around 2017 and it is now a favorite.  The story is ridiculous, but I enjoy it on that level.  The music is unbelievable.  I love that build up from the dreamy/slow part to where the full band kicks in again.  This one retains a sense of melancholy for me as it ended up being the last MP era album track (that'll be changing soon :)).
09.   Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence - 31 - I've always loved Solitary Shell, but the rest of it didn't do much for me until recent times.  It is still growing on me.
08.   Breaking All Illusions - 37 - I'm surprised this song rated so highly within the group.  I love the riff, lyrics, and the first part of the instrumental section.  The second part (after the instrumental "climax") drags for me quite a bit.  It is still one of my favorites from the MM era and was awesome live during the 2012 tour.
07.   Voices - 62 - I enjoy it, but it isn't to tier for me.  Perhaps I need to revisit this song in the near future.

Breaking All Illusions is a great song and James always was great on it live. Anyway, as our great host ReaperKK said - 8th? really? at least it didn't surprise the song it got a loose inspiration from  :D

I ranked it 37, 29 positions lower.

Voices, on the other hand.... I love, love, love this song and it was my number #3! congats for Kev to love it even more than I do  :tup

While I did not rank it at the top, Voices is the quintessential example of everything I love about DT. The metal and the prog combined. Wonderful melodies and great vocal lines. Tecnique at the service of the song and not the other way around. There's so much going on! and everything that goes on is wonderful, all the vocal lines, all the heavy parts, all the mellow parts, the bombastic choruses, the lyrics... and for such a wild musical journey, it takes "only" 10 minutes!

The Dark Eternal Night (picking an example a song I dislike) lasts more or less the same, and it's just intro, verse chorus verse chorus, solo (thrown together in LTE mode), chorus and outro. Just a normal song structure, and Voices covers so much ground instead in those 10 minutes.

Voices is a masterpiece, it's one of the main reasons why I love Dream Theater, and it's the perfect explanation why I love these guys.
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

So, with Breaking All Illusions at 117, I will have at least two songs in the Top 10 that didn't make my list AT ALL.

That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad
I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".

08.   Breaking All Illusions (#2) high or cohigh ranker yet again.  DC in 2011, I was about ten feet away and fifteen above JP during this song.  Damn near divine!    :hefdaddy

Dropped two spots from the last countdown.

07.   Voices (#55) hasn’t aged well for me over the last few years.  Still a great tune.

69/94 ****

Slight catch up

I had In The Name Of God at #50.
It made my Top 50! I missed the ToT tour, so seeing it in 2009 was a highlight for me.[

I saw both tours.  Oddly, in 2009, it was not played in Philly, but ended the concert proper the next night in Columbia, MD

I remember checking MP.com and seeing that ITNOG was played. I'm pretty sure that was the first time they played it on that tour. I saw them the following night, but my excitement was tempered by the fact that there'd be no way they'll play it twice in a row. But they did!!
In fact, looking at it, we got the exact same setlist, but you got Sacrificed Sons and We got Hollow Years.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

We got 'Hollow Years' that Friday night in Philly.  That friend's favorite DT song.   :)

'Sacrificed Son' the following night.  That friend's favorite DT song.   :)
