I had Under A Glass Moon at #55.
A hard song for me to rank, and seeing it at my #55 makes me feel guilty.  It's a great song.

I had The Glass Prison at #92.
This might be one of the worst aging songs in their catalog for me.

I had Pull Me Under at #71.
Not sure I have anything to even say about it. It is what it is, and that...pretty damn good.

Some notes:

If nostalgia had played less of a part in my ranking then Blind Faith may well have been my #1. I think everything about it is perfect. I love especially the piano interlude and Petrucci's brilliant solo towards the end.

In The Presence of Enemies is a giant and mostly glorious mess to me (kind of like the entire SC album). The very opening is spectacular. What a way to announce a new beginning, having ended the cycle of starting one album as the last one ended. I also really like how Part 2 builds up. I just feel like there's a much better 15 to 20 minute song in amongst all these notes somewhere.

I don't have the history with Images and Words that a lot of fans have, I came to that album way after I first heard the run of Scenes through Octavarium. For that reason the 3 songs included in this update never really threatened the highest spots. Under A Glass Moon in particular is a song I've never really connected with for whatever reason.

Finally Free is the kind of song the band haven't written in a good while. A real 'journey' song, with music to match the dramatic ebb and flow of the lyrics. Oh and I'm crap at guitar but that acoustic intro at the start? I can play that sucker. Made a point of learning it years back.

Does Bridges in the Sky contain the band's best chorus? Why yes, yes it does. Check out the instrumental version of the track to hear how beautiful the instrumentation of that part really is. I'm not the biggest fan of Jordan's soloing in the band but I love it when he adds atmosphere to a piece.

Illumination Theory - beautiful central section, fantastic riffs, the only thing that slightly lets this tune down a bit is the 2nd-rate Octavarium finale. The guitar solo doesn't have the soaring grandeur of The Razor's Edge. Still a fine composition though.

FF I had at 47.  Wonderful ending to an amazing album.

Strange Deja Vu came in at 39.  Lots to like here, high energy, killer stuff.

TTT came in at 35.  I thought maybe it should have been lower, but each time I hear it, I enjoy the fuck out of it, great song.

UAGM came in at 22.  Yep, classic song, fucking incredible solo.

Glass Prison I had at number 8. I remember going to the CD and buying SDOIT and playing it for the first time hearing this song.  It blew me away and still does.  Heavy, high energy, just fucking rips.  I love the trade off vocals in the first verse also between James and Mike.

PMU came in at 18.  Same as TTT, feels like it should be lower but it rips each time.

Pull Me Under: 24. It's like my wife: every time I think I have grown tired of the familiarity, I give it a spin and I remember why I fell in love. For many today it may be just an old song, for many who where there, it's the "what the amazing fock is this? Anything is possible then" song.

The Glass Prison: didn't make the cut. The beginning of a sonic trend I can't appreciate.

Under a Glass Moon: 16. Spellbinding. JP shifts gear, leaves Nuno and PG behind and reaches Satch and Vai.

The Score so far:

3 - The Spirit Carries On
4 - Lines in the Sand
5 - In the Presence of Enemies
7 - Misunderstood
9 - Space-Dye Vest
11 - Beyond This Life
14 - Stream of Consciousness
16 - Under a Glass Moon
17 - Bridges in the Sky
19 - Illumination Theory
21 - A New Beginning
23 - Disappear
24 - Pull Me Under
25 - Surrounded
27 - The Best of Times
28 - Outcry
31 - Erotomania
32 - Strange Deja-Vu
33 - Surrender to Reason
34 - Take the Time
35 - Finally Free
36 - This Is the Life
38 - Hell's Kitchen
42 - Another Day
43 - One Last Time
45 - Vacant
46 - The Gift of Music
47 - Beneath the Surface
48 - The Silent Man
54 - Peruvian Skies
55 - The Dance of Eternity
56 - The Bigger Picture
61 - Wait for Sleep
64 - Blind Faith
65 - Pale Blue Dot
68 - Our New World
69 - Overture 1928
70 - Innocence Faded
71 - Behind the Veil
72 - The Looking Glass
76 - Lifting Shadows Off a Dream
77 - At Wit's End
78 - Lie
79 - Hollow Years
87 - Ytse Jam
88 - The Mirror
89 - Through Her Eyes
90 - Lost Not Forgotten
91 - 6:00
92 - The Killing Hand
93 - Endless Sacrifice
95 - Barstool Warrior
96 - Fall Into the Light
97 - A Fortune in Lies

Not Ranked: 33

28.   Lines In The Sand NR That drag of an intro and yes the backing vocals drop this down past #100.
27.   The Mirror 29
26.   The Spirit Carries On 50
25.   Illumination Theory NR I just cannot get in to this song as an individual unit. It has some great parts, but they didn't bring it all together.
24.   Beyond This Life 51
25.   Bridges In The Sky 18 A great centerpiece to a great album.
22.   In The Presence Of Enemies 7 I love this song, everything about it, and yes even that wankery section and the cheese lyrics.
21.   Blind Faith 17 This really should be higher. I don't know why I don't listen to SDoIT:1 more often.
20.   Surrounded 52 Has not aged as well as most of I&W.
19.   Finally Free 6 A little surprised it was this high. Fantastic ending to a great album.
18.   Strange Deja Vu 69
17.   Take The Time 49
16.   Under A Glass Moon 25
15.   The Glass Prison 33 Loved this when I got the album, it's lost some luster over the years.
14.   Pull Me Under 16 As with others, this song cracked open the door, shortly before the whole album blew the door off the hinges.

It only just now struck me as odd that Pull Me Under finished outside the top 10. Considering it’s the band’s signature song of sorts.

Strange Deja Vu #47
Take The Time #11
Under A Glass Moon #16
The Glass Prison #60

Pull Me Under #1

So going into this I wondered if I would be the only one predictable enough to have this at 1 :lol

See the thing is where I am Down Under, no big city radio or anything back then, I picked Images And Words up on a whim while motorcycling up the Australian east coast (along with the Candlebox debut and Saigon Kick's Water to name just a few, guessing a year after its release thereabouts)...  Pull Me Under was my first listen of DT and it certainly comes with some nostalgic value now too.  No overexposure via radio and it was quite some time before I even knew PMU had been a 'Hit'.  Thankfully for me it's no more overplayed than any other DT.

So as obvious as it was, my use of the ranker put Pull Me Under at #1 and I'm more than fine with that  :metal

Wow, it's 13 spots higher than last time!

The Glass Prison: didn't make the cut. The beginning of a sonic trend I can't appreciate.

Rude.

Indiscipline is a filthy boy...

ReaperKK since #100 the countdown is revealed by three in a row each day. I remember that will change within the top, but can't remember in which way and scrolling and screening 54 pages is a little over the top. Do you deliver #13 - #11 the same time and then the top 10 with one each day... or what do you suggest?

Pull Me Under was the first DT song I ever heard, somewhere around 2000-ish around midnight, seeing the video for it. I quite liked it. Began to investigate the band online and saw people raving over how good JP is at playing guitar. I didn’t quite catch that on first listen but I was 14 and barely had any reference.

I got Images & Words off of Kazaa or something and also quite liked it but it didn’t really stick. Until a year later or so when I got SFaM from the library. That album blew me away and was like musical crack for my brain.

Regarding PMU: I was blasting it the other day recently and the thought occurred to me that this is like DT’s Enter Sandman. That clean intro, the build up, it’s just amazingly well executed. After years of being disinterested in it because they have so many more epic tracks with amazing lengthy instrumental sections, I’m starting to really dig PMU again because it’s just “great song”.

I'll probably do 3 at a time until the top 5. The only reason I'm doing that way is I have some travel coming up and I would like to wrap up before then because I'm not sure I can do updates regularly on the road.

Update!

13. Fatal Tragedy

Kind of surprised to see this song so high. It's a good song, always like it when it comes up in a playlist but never really put it on.

12. Scarred
Highest Finish: 1 (Ben_Jamin)
Number of Lists appeared on: 61 (Adami, Animal, Awaken, axeman90210, Ben_Jamin, bosk1, CanuckChum, CharlesPL, Cool Chris, Dave_Manchester, devieira73, Dittomist, DragonAttack, Dream Team, DTwwbwMP, energythief, Evermind, Fonzie, hefdaddy42, Indiscipline, Jamesman42, jammindude, jeff_kinsley, jingle.boy, jonny108, JPZealot, KevShmev, King Puppies and the Acid Guppies, Lethean, lightningbolt, lucasembarbosa, mariner, Metro, MirrorMask, Mladen, MoraWintersoul, Mosh, MustActFastToCoverUp, NoFred, Peter Mc, pg1067, PixelDream, Podaar, porcacultor, ReaperKK, ReaPsTA, romdrums, Setlist Scotty, Stadler, SwedishGoose, TAC, The Realm, Toro, Trav86, twosuitsluke, Vmadera00, WardySI, weirdo, Wim Kruithof, wolfking, Zydar)

I don't know why but it has been years since the last time I heard this song. I listened to it again for the countdown and I enjoyed it. I thought this song was more divisive on the forum and would place lower but I guess not.

11. In The Name Of God
Highest Finish: 1 (NoFred)
Number of Lists appeared on: 64 (Adami, Animal, Awaken, axeman90210, Ben_Jamin, bosk1, CanuckChum, CharlesPL, Cool Chris, Dave_Manchester, devieira73, Dittomist, DragonAttack, Dream Team, DTwwbwMP, energythief, Evermind, Fonzie, geeeemo, hefdaddy42, Indiscipline, Jamesman42, jammindude, jeff_kinsley, JiM-Xtreme, jingle.boy, jonny108, JPZealot, KevShmev, King Puppies and the Acid Guppies, Lethean, lightningbolt, lucasembarbosa, mariner, Metro, MirrorMask, Mladen, MoraWintersoul, Mosh, MustActFastToCoverUp, nobloodyname, NoFred, OpenYourEyes311, Peter Mc, pg1067, PixelDream, Podaar, porcacultor, ReaperKK, ReaPsTA, Revenge319, romdrums, Setlist Scotty, Stadler, TAC, The Realm, Toro, Trav86, twosuitsluke, Vmadera00, weirdo, Wim Kruithof, wolfking, Zydar)

Another banger off ToT. Great closer to a great album with an amazing solo section.

Fatal Tragedy- #16 on my list. Great, great song with a killer instrumental section. That unison is a favorite if I'm out for a run and need to pick up the pace.

Scarred- I had this up at #8, it just edges out another song I expect to see soon on this countdown for my favorite piece from Awake. Some cool lyrics, great moments from every instrument, and JLB is in full on God mode (as he is for most of Awake).

In the Name of God- Just missed nailing this one, #12 for me. So much to like about this song, man do they let it rip in the latter half. I also love both the studio Battle Hymn and live bonus guitar solo outros.
Photobucket sucks.

13. Fatal Tragedy

Another masterpiece in their masterpiece album. Love the theatricality of it. Absolutely fantastic. For me it was 12th.

12. Scarred

This is even better! once again I have to be repetitive, there are only so many adjectives I can dance around with  :D this song is 1001% Dream Theater and has fantastic melodies, it's amazing from the beginning to the end. I love everything - the heavy verses, the contrast with the more melodic break / bridge, chorus is nice, and the mellow section that starts with the "Do you feel you don't know me anymore" is a glorious and fantastic crescendo of emotions and intensity. "And how come you don't understand me, and how come I don't understand you?", yes, yes, yes, and then "People in prayer for me, everyone there for me", even better, when does this song stops to be so kickass so I can take a breather from all these emotions?  :lol

Really, I do hope they put such a big attention on the melodies on their next album. A song worth of this track that I placed 8th, 4 positions above, pity it didn't make the top ten.

11. In The Name Of God

I'm gonna calm down a bit with this one, it falls into the "yes, of course it's a fantastic song, but it's not that I'm completely obsessed over it" category for me. I won't complain about anything in the song but with such a tough competition, it did not go past the 44th position, 33 places lower. I guess it could have been place several spots higher however.
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

Three songs in my Top 10 today

Fatal Tragedy ... 10.  Perfect song.  My highest rated from SFAM.  Top 3 instrumental sections in DTs catalogue
Scarred... I thought I might have a chance of being the highest ranker at #3, but alas, Ben beat me to it.  Flawless.  MM said just what I would have said.  I think it rates this high because those that love it, REALLY love it; those that don't, it's still a really good song.
In The Name Of God ... #5.  So much to love about this, only enhanced by the L@B version.  Heavy riffs, killer instrumental section, amazing unisons, and great delivery by James.  The band fires on all cylinders from start to finish.

I'm going to gather that every song left in the top 10 will invariably have at least one person that rates it as their #1 song
That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad
I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".

Only the epics and Surrounded, that's all that's better than Scarred I believe. Surrounded is my most-listen-to Dream Theater track, but Scarred is my #2. Unbelievable beautiful and only a tribute to Ben_Jamin to rank this one at #1. Which doesn't surprise me at all... the reflection questions from 5.50 are probably the most emotional moments from the whole Awake album. Never from that moment on 'till #15 they reach the vunerable momentum as here...

13.   Fatal Tragedy I had this only at 38, probably because of the concept album thing and the whole being stronger than its pieces
12.   Scarred Definitely a Top10 for me, I had it at 9
11.   In The Name Of God Definitely a Top10 for me, I had it at 7

Seven left from my personal Top10 as we go into the consensus Top10

The Glass Prison- The first entry from my top 5, this was my #4 song. While it's not my #1, this song will always have a *very* special place in my heart. It's not an exaggeration to say that The Glass Prison changed my life in meaningful ways. Flash back to the summer of 2003. I'm just finished with my sophomore year of high school, and after not getting into music until I was 13-14, I am now big into music and hard rock/heavy metal in particular. Metallica is my favorite band and I spend time on the forums that are part of Metallica's official website. I'm browsing a thread about "recommend other bands that Metallica fans should check out". Plenty of posts about plenty of bands in there, but a post someone made about how if you love Metallica and heavy metal you need to hear this song The Glass Prison by a band called Dream Theater piqued my interest in particular. So one Saturday morning I take a trip to my local Sam Goody (RIP) and buy Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. I take it with me to work and pop it into my CD player on my lunch break and hit play. I can still remember exactly where I was sitting and the feeling of musical epiphany that kicked in along with the double bass drums and carried me through those brain-melting arpeggios. This was the apex of heavy metal to my ears. Now, it wasn't an immediate love affair with DT from that moment on. I did not love or even like prog at that time, I wanted everything to be as :metal as The Glass Prison and I was initially disappointed by everything that wasn't. I stuck with them though, chasing that high from hearing TGP, and a little bit later Scenes From a Memory absolutely highjacked my brain for about three months straight and the rest was history. I moved over from the Metallica forums to these forums, hosted at the time on DT's official site, and over 20 years later I'm still here and I've forged so many important friendships and relationships out of this community that transcend "music friend" or "forum buddy". Not to mention, so much of what I listen to even now is either music directly connected in one way or another to DT or music that I got turned on to by spending time in this place. It's wild to think how different my life would've been if some rando on the Metallica forums hadn't plugged The Glass Prison back in 2003.

Great story!  :tup  I only found out about DT because of my wife and I going to see Queensryche.  We've made friends and met the band multiple times due to 'chance'.

13.   Fatal Tragedy (#30) first appearance of Brian May in a guitar solo 😉
12.   Scarred (#54)
11.   In The Name Of God (#41)

Through My Words/Fatal Tragedy (my #19) are really just one (amazing) song, my second fave from Scenes.

Scarred (my #80) is a bit disjointed, but still a great song. Its intro is one of my fave moments in DT catalog.

In The Name of God (my #11) is the best song from ToT. All the feel of the song is so coherent with its theme, with great riffs. That solo section is one of the most creative and iconic moments in DT catalog. And the ending is really beaufiful and epic!

11. In The Name Of God
Highest Finish: 1 (NoFred)

It’s like they set out to write a midtempo metal plodder but couldn’t help themselves from infusing it with their own end of album epicness. Also my favorite example of the one thing they do better than anybody - effortlessly transitioning into and out of the crazy solo section. A seamless song that just keeps building.

Also love the subtle different inflections by JLB on the repeated chorus, gives the studio version a real immediacy, like the whole thing is done in one take.

Fatal Tragedy I’m not so fond of the verses, but the chorus is great and the instrumental parts are fun.

Scarred is one of DT’s most epic songs. The intro is outstanding. So much atmosphere. The first half of the song can maybe get a bit too melodramatic at times, but the second half of the song is absolutely peak DT (from “Do you feel…” onward). That buildup, and the keyboard and guitar solos are perfection. Really great outro with the string keys too. Just a great song that I kind of remember not doing so well last time? I could be wrong.

In The Name of God is one of the better songs on ToT. Still not something I’d listen to very often, but it has a nice atmosphere and some crazy solos that are a bit over the top but cool in that respect.

Oh my what an incredible batch of songs. I remember BlobVanDam calling Scarred the duck-billed platypus of DT songs but it works despite some awkward transitions. I would probably like it even more if it continued in the style of the first minute or so; and actually I thought the Ranker would have it higher. Those other 2 songs have some of the very best instrumental sections in the catalog.
