Poor Things

What a strange and wonderful film! Easy to see why it got nominated for Best Picture, although I doubt it wins. A totally weird story, with phenomenal acting performances by everyone involved, especially Emma Stone, and more sex than any non-porno I've ever seen. Also, the visual effects are stunning, with the most brilliant color pallette I've ever seen (once it transitions over from black & white).

Two thumbs up!

Watched that last night. Agree with pretty much everything you said.

An amazing movie. I think I commented about it before above somewhere. So glad Emma Stone won best actress as I thought her performance was the clear standout of the year. Even though I really enjoyed Killers of the Flower Moon I really struggle to see what is so great about Lily Gladstone (who was a good chance to win) in that movie in comparison.

Perfect Days

I have a soft spot for slice of life Japanese movies and this movie hits the right notes for me. Such a great Kōji Yakusho. We see a man content with his daily routines and what some changes can do to those routines.

I would've given it to Lily, myself, but it's impossible to argue that Emma also didn't deserve it. So I was largely fine with her winning it.

I've seen clips from Poor Things and I think it looks very interesting.  I like weird cinema sometimes, and this looks pretty damned weird.  In general, Mrs. Orbert and I discuss what movies to watch because I don't go to the cinema solo, and TV time is usually shared.  But I know if I bring this one up, Mrs. O will say "You just want to see Emma Stone naked" and she'd be mostly right, or at least partly right.  But I have seen many clips, on various websites, and let's just say that that part's already been covered.  :eyebrows:  I actually do want to the see the movie for itself.

It's a pretty wild, weird movie.  I liked it immensely.

great movie, i'd highly recommend the book. i read it after seeing the film and thought it was way better. also without sharing spoilers, the plot is a bit different as well so it's a fresh read even if you just watched the movie. it's also told largely via letters which is always a fun narrative device

Oppenheimer

Very intense, very well done, lots of insight into the man and the times, mostly great acting all around.  Unfortunately, some of the actors are a bit typecast in my mind and it took me out of the picture a few times.  Once I realized that Groves was Matt Damon, it was a little hard not to just see/hear Matt Damon.  But the fact that I made it 1/4 of the way into the movie before realizing who it was I suppose is a testament to him disappearing into the character.  We'd watched the Ocean's 11/12/13 movies recently, and when Casey Affleck showed up as Pash, he basically looked and sounded exactly like Virgil Malloy and I couldn't shake that.  But there were a lot of characters, and most of them I didn't recognize at all.  I mean, I don't watch movies trying to recognize the actors; I really would rather be immersed.  When we watched the closing credits and saw who played whom, I was pretty amazed at how many names I recognized, but did not notice in the film.  Good!  That's exactly when I want.  I don't want to watch a movie about Robert Downey, Jr trying to screw over Cillian Murphy.  I want to watch a movie about J. Robert Oppenheimer and the shit he went through.

How about Iron Man trying to screw over Thomas Shelby?

 ;D

BTW, catching up on another famous film I've never seen, I saw Taken. Solid action movie through and through.

How about that Robert Downey? Were 3/4 of they way in when I realized it was him. Outstanding performance and makeup!

Unfortunately, I knew RDJ was in this because of all the Oscar buzz and other buzz, so when he showed up it was pretty obvious.  Great job with the makeup, and he did play the character a bit differently from his regular smartass RDJ character, although there was some of that because it was part of the character.

I was only half paying attention, and my first reaction was "how could Dio have been in Oppenheimer?!"   :lol

Watched Avatar 2 over the weekend for some brainless colorful nonsense, and it certainly delivered that. James Cameron's love of the environment and his love of massive military hardware don't seem super compatible, but it passed an evening (an ENTIRE evening, that shit is loooooong).
