My wife and I own and live in a four buildings compound: one of those is a flat building (garage downstairs, rehearsals room upstairs) whose large roof we have covered with solar panels ten years ago; these panels feed the whole compound's energy system (our house, mother-in-law's house, daughter's house) for a considerable deal, and in the past (when the daughter was in uni) we've even been able to sell a bit of surplus back. Everything is sorrounded by a bit of land hosting nice trees, which my wife adores; she hugs them and talks with them sometimes. Call her crazy (she married me, after all), but it's a thing I definitely love in her, one of the 100 reasons for she is an infinitely better person than I am.

We've had some problems with both the wireless system monitoring control and the feeding system itself lately, and today it turned out our young oak is not so young anymore and it's blocking a big area of the panel structure with its branches. The technician bluntly said: "you either cut the tree (pruning the excessive lenght and branches would equal death for the plant, another specialist said) or move (and rebuild) the entire system on top of another building. To sum it up, in order to protect an investment made for exquisite enviromental concerns, we have to cut a tree.

My wife is literally crying (and tomorrow is her focking birthday) at the thought of killing a "friend", I am figuratively crying at the thought of paying for the humongous work the alternative involves, both are pissed at what will probably happen: save the tree, sell the panels.

Apologies for the long rant, but I feel mocked by the irony of it all.
Late to the party, but Happy Birthday to your wife.

I think turning the tree into a table or chair might be the best thing to do.

We had a birthday lunch and we opted for the most rational decision, i.e. cutting. Once we were back home, she went to the tree, spoke a few words like she's focking Bran Stark, and turned away. When I timidly proposed: "you know, I could make something from the wood", the answer was : "Nah, leave it be. It's ok".

Which leads me to:

They're fucking beasts that would surely kill you if they thought they could, and still eat.

For a moment I thought the subject had moved from my wife.

As much as I want to give you some shit, you may be right here  :lol  apparently if you die in your home with your cat and no one notices, the cat likely will eat you. A dog likely won't.

Yet a cat won't eat you while you're alive but dogs might.

Also, both depend on the time frame. If no one notices for long enough the dogs will become starved and they'll absolutely eat you.

Interestingly enough though....once you croak cats will eat all your soft tissue off your face....while, when you're found dogs are just sitting there all loyal by your side starving to death.

I found myself on a rabbit hole of vid watching 'domesticated' cats hunting birds and small rodents last night. So cool and fascinating. It reminded me of a special that Discovery channel ran a few years back when it basically said 'domesticated' cats aren't really domesticated. They just tolerate humans because we're a constant source of shelter and food.

That's another positive for cats, keep the rodents out of your house. Not that I have a rodent problem, but surprisingly my fat lazy cat did kill a mouse in my basement once before.  Also, more to my situation, he also takes care of any of the centipedes that get into my home.

Cats have entered our homes millennia ago, and we befriended them; some say the impetus was theirs, as they use "meaow" only with us, in an attempt to mimic our vowel laden languages, and the relationship seems to be "you seem to draw joy from my presence, the least you can do is feed and shelter me". I'm not sure "domesticated" does it justice, as to me it implies a sort of subordination.

Independent, clean, discrete, loyal to their personality: it seems a pretty good model of living for humans as well.

I grew up with having cats....we had a LOT of them. My mom loved and still loves them. I like them and think they're awesome animals but we've never owned one as a pet. I personally think they're outdoor pets and will wait until we eventually get some property to then get a few to let run around. But won't ever have one as an 'in house' pet for a few reasons. But, I do like them.

I read somewhere that Disney lets cats roam it's parks at night to rid the place of rodents.  Being serious (though I can't verify it's true).

Wouldn't be surprised.  It's fairly common for cats to be in farms to deal with the pests.

Yes, I know Disneyland has a colony of cats they take care of. They're all fixed, so no kittens! We even saw one while we were there last year.

I've never had a cat growing up and wasn't really fond of them until I met my wife who had one. That cat really changed my opinion, she is smart, plays fetch, clean and loves to chill, hell she is laying on my chest purring as I write this. We've have both cats and dogs in the house and honestly I love all the pets.

"Pissed off" isn't the right word; more like freaked out, but as the "freak out" diminishes, I might get pissed...

So we're having internet issues over the past couple days. Intermittent service, drop outs, slow internet... About a half an hour ago, I opened Spotify up to send my roulette submission to Wolfie.  Done!  Then about 15, 20 minutes ago, we had an episode with the internet and things slowed to a crawl.

I went back to close Spotify, and a pop-up ad came up.  "Slow connectivity interrupting your music?   Try T-mobile" or something along those lines (I closed it without really thinking about it).   I get that ads are tailored, but this seems excessively... intrusive.  This isn't a site like Amazon monitoring past searches; this is actually going outside the program to assess computer performance.  That seems a little much to me.

Am I missing something?

If I understand correctly, this probably isn't that. I get those from Youtube whenever playback is bad (although it's a useless help link rather than an ad). Spotify will always be monitoring performance. Just like YT. Their site will know if you're getting spotty internet without having to know anything about your computer beyond its own app.

That makes sense.  Thanks!

"Pissed off" isn't the right word; more like freaked out, but as the "freak out" diminishes, I might get pissed...

THat's my thought as well, but it does seem to be an ad tied to it with T-Moblie.  I'm guessing that actually isn't targetted in the way you are thinking about being intrusive, but targetting int he way El Barto is saying in that the system knows you are having an internet issue so they likely got paid by T-Mobile to tag that to the warning.  Having said that, I find that part to be annoying.  You already get the normal targeted ads towards you, but now the website is giving you ads in their warnings.  That's a bit much.  I'd be even more annoyed (for you that is, since I don't use spotify) if you are on a paid tier of service and getting that ad. I guess if you are using it for free, it's all part of the business model.
