I'm starting to think... maybe it's possible that there won't be a single? I mean, relative to the adtoe PR cycle, how far behind are we in terms of when on the backs of angels was released?

OTBOA was released June 29, the album was Sep 12. So we're a bit behind that, but there's no rule for this kind of thing.

Seriously, who releases an album without a single? Keep calm and wait! I'm sure it will be soon. :soon:
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

I've actually wondering if the delayed single this time was because there may be no snippets this time. So instead of releasing the single, then later the snippets all before release to keep us going, they'll just release a single closer to the release. I'm just taking a guess though.

It HAS been confirmed. RR's twitter account said there would be a single.
[/quote]
It's basically been confirmed there would be a single, and besides it would be pretty stupid on the part of RR not to release one.
THATS what I needed to hear! not just "ummm durr what stupid idiots dont release a single it's PR 101 are u a stupid?"

lol i'm not stressing out that we haven't received a single yet. I'm not listening to it either way. I was just secretly hoping that there wouldn't be a single, because to me a single is likely to be more formulaic and predictable song structure wise, which isn't as interesting IMO. I know having avant-garde/hyper-proggy/unpredictable/insert-adjective-here song structure isn't necessary to make a DT song good, but that's just my personal preference (especially truer for modern DT). it's these types of songs (with unconventional song structures) that keep me coming back to DT, but that's just me.

There have always been straightforward verse-chorus songs on DT albums, even if singles haven't been released. Besides, RR would make them release a single even if there were no songs that could appeal to mainstream listeners - Opeth are on Roadrunner, and look at how "commercial" the singles from their latest few albums have been! Another thing worth remembering is that last time we got OTBOA as an unedited version and that song doesn't really match my definition of the average single.

absolutely, and they are typically not my favorite DT songs, and i'm sure a good deal of DT fans would agree with me. consider TCOT vs a rite of passage/wither, otboa/bmubmd vs BAI, constant motion/forsaken vs ITPOE pt1/pt2...

According to JP and the confirmed track lengths, it seems as though there would be more single candidates.

I mean, most of the songs are 5-6 minutes

Good luck, but I'm listening to everything that becomes available.

I remember the days where a single would come out THE WEEK BEFORE the album.

I don't think I will listen to it.  I listened to "On The Backs of Angels" last time around and by the time the album came I was sick of that song already.

Noxon (a DTFer who has the album and will publish a review soon) confirmed these track lengths in the main DT12 thread:

1. False Awakening Suite – 2:42
2. The Enemy Inside – 6:17
3. The Looking Glass – 4:53
4. Enigma Machine – 6:01
5. The Bigger Picture – 7:40
6. Behind The Veil – 6:52
7. Surrender To Reason – 6:34
8. Along For The Ride – 4:45
9. Illumination Theory – 22:17

I don't see why listening to the single would ruin the experience for anyone but hey, whatever suits you. I listened to Angels immediately and continued once the album was released. I never once felt like listening to that single ruined the experience of the album or the live shows.

Just so that when you listen to the album for the first time, all of the material will be new to out ears, including the song released as the single.

Well clearly that is the result of not listening to the single lol. My point was that for me personally, I didn't see how it would enhance my listening experience.

It may not. I just think it will be interesting to go into the album never having any of it.

I became a fan after ADTOE was released, so i don't yet know how i should do it. I remember listening to the singles for the last two Iron Maiden albums, alot. It didn't really ruin anything for me then. I think i'll listen to the single as much as i want  ;D

DT music is still a lot for me to take in at first. It takes time  for me to soak it all in. So the earlier I get to listen to their new material, the better!
1. Images & Words/ 2. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence/ 3. Scenes From a Memory
