I've decided not to listen to the single
« on: July 27, 2013, 11:32:23 AM »
I've decided not to listen to the single, or any snippets or anything. I think it'll be pretty cool going into the album without having heard anything.

So, anyone else going to try this? I can't promise that I'll have the requisite willpower, but I'm giving it a shot. :D

You will fail
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

I'll listen to the single - I listened to OtBoA dozens of times before ADToE came out and I didn't get bored of it, or feel the need to skip it or anything. It's still my 3rd favourite track from the album. Plus, the new single won't be out as long as OtBoA was before the album's release.

I'm going to try and avoid any snippets if there are any though.

I'm going to try and do what the OP is doing. It'd be the first time I go into a new DT album since Octavarium where I didn't hear anything before first hearing the album.

Good job this isn't mandatory. I get really excited when any DT news comes out.

Listening to singles has worked fine for me so far.  I enjoyed OTBOA when I heard all of ADTOE for the first time and I still think it's one of the strongest tracks on the album.

I will listen to any singles/snippets/snapples that they will release and I won't have any problems with it spoiling anything at all.

I will listen to the single at the point of understanding it completely. Then I'll likely stop listening to it until the release, which will hopefully prevent the sad OTBOA Burnout Syndrome.

On the other hand I most likely won't listen to music samples because I suspect none will be released.  :P

Whenever there is a new cd, a concert, a movie im looking forward to etc. i always say to myself "i wont listen to/watch/read anything about this before its presented to me in its entirety".
Well.. I ALWAYS end up reading every review, listen to every little snippet, plow through setlists, watch trailers and so forth.. So this time im saying: IŽll listen to everything i can, and iŽll take in as much information as possible before the release of this album - because i will do exactly that anyway!

I am going to do what I can to hold out on the single as long as possible. If I do cave in, I'm going to keep the listens to a minimum, so as to maintain as much full album impact as possible.

Honestly, I listened to OTBOA waaaay too much before ADTOE came out. I'm not going to make that mistake again.

I'll listen to the single and possible samples/snippets only once. I didn't get burned out on OTBOA, but I just want the album to sound as fresh as possible when I listen to it for the first time.

I'll listen to the single, and listen to the snippets for Behind the Veil and Illumination Theory. Nothing else.

i'm in! although I probably won't last until the release of the album. I'm really interested to see how peoples opinion of the single change from release time up until the release of the album. I'm sure they will be overwhelmingly positive at first, but I want to see how people feel once they have really digested the track. over the course of at least a couple of weeks.

I still haven't listened to FII.

I'm still waiting for the motivation.

If there are snippets of each song, I'm avoiding them at all costs. Listening to samples would water down the experience of hearing the full album for the first time.

Releasing snippets seems kinda awkward to say the least, I hope they avoid it this time. Can't wait for the single though.

I actually haven't decided whether I'll be listening to the single or not. I think mostly likely, I'll listen to it once or maybe twice. I know people are responding to declarations of this variety with "you won't have the willpower," but I actually think I will. I fully fell in love with Dream Theater in December, and I spread out buying the albums over the last 8 or so months. In fact, I only just got When Dream and Day Unite and Falling Into Infinity and have yet to listen to either (I'll probably do one tonight and one tomorrow). I don't want to ruin the impact of the album by being very used to one song in advance; however, I had heard OTBOA once, several months before getting ADTOE and it didn't really ruin it for me. I think if I listen to the single once, I will be able to balance satisfying my curiosity and not ruining the album in advance.

As for snippets, I will avoid those like the plague. I don't want to be going through the album for the first time identifying all the parts of the song I had heard before.

I will read people's comments on the single and the snippets (if those come), because I've done the same for the other albums before I got them and there were no negative impacts, but I won't be listening to any snippets and will keep my listens of the single to 1 or 2.
And if spirit's a sign,
Then it's only a matter of time
