I'm thinking that entertainment options are probably pretty limited where they live, so this is the kind of thing people come up with.  Humans are resourceful like that.  I love the guy standing there playing some kind of pipe flute, providing tunes for the event.

I remember putting together a little paper dragon template that used a similar optical illusion so that it looked like the dragon's head was following you around the room.

That dragon is still in our living room. Rather sad though, the head didn't hold up.
