One thing a lot of people have been saying is that this reminds them of SFam/6DOIT. Let me throw out this angle.
Train of Thought was a huge and somewhat random turn for the band's sound. All the sudden this super heavy super cold super harsh metal was going in there. And then in Octavarium they made what in many ways is a straight up pop-DT album (excepting the title track). Then SC and BCSL were kind of a combination of those two styles.
With this song, it feels like DT wound back the clock to 2003 and made the more natural follow up to their Six Degrees sound. I'm not saying it doesn't reflect how they've progressed since then. The vocals are very Static Impulse, the keyboards are a combination of every gadget Rudess has been recently playing with, Myung's bass tone still sounds like his more recent tones, etc. etc. But at least on this song it seems like DT has made another major change back in their sound, even if the quantitative measurements of that change are a bit subtle.
