The chorus could have been bigger, but I think we'll have plenty of chances for that. :) If this song is indeed LaBrie written, remember: he typically doesn't have that big of choruses in his songs. I think that even the biggest choruses on Static Impulse were written by the other contributors.

After 1 listen: Shattered my fairly low expectations. Really, really good song and I love Rudess' presence throughout. I must be the only one who doesn't hear JMX though. :lol Maybe it's the earphones.

fuck yeah

This sounds like a progression from 6DoIT, sure, but it also fits into the modern SC/BCSL era; there's a audible recurrent structure, and a shitload of heaviness, but then you blend in the obvious creative input from everyone in the band, the tasteful instrumentals (I squealed when the piano came in), and sheer progginess. Plus a Myung bass break.

Interesting.  In some respects it actually reminds me more of their contemporaries, i.e. Circus Maximus.

I love it. If this is the single of ADTOE we are going to spend a very happy September, this year!  :metal

Anyway, on my italian forum user are quite displeased with the song. One of them even said that OtBoA disgusted him so much that he is probably done with DT. Cheers.  :D

It reminds me of "Going for the One" yes. It sounds newer and sleaker, but still very "classic" and very good, if not the best.

One thing a lot of people have been saying is that this reminds them of SFam/6DOIT.  Let me throw out this angle.

Train of Thought was a huge and somewhat random turn for the band's sound.  All the sudden this super heavy super cold super harsh metal was going in there.  And then in Octavarium they made what in many ways is a straight up pop-DT album (excepting the title track).  Then SC and BCSL were kind of a combination of those two styles.

With this song, it feels like DT wound back the clock to 2003 and made the more natural follow up to their Six Degrees sound.  I'm not saying it doesn't reflect how they've progressed since then.  The vocals are very Static Impulse, the keyboards are a combination of every gadget Rudess has been recently playing with, Myung's bass tone still sounds like his more recent tones, etc. etc.  But at least on this song it seems like DT has made another major change back in their sound, even if the quantitative measurements of that change are a bit subtle.

Haven't posted on here in years :O.

Have to say that song was killer. Loving Mike's contribution, he's quieter in the mix but still offers enough to the song that he doesn't get totally overlooked. James is solid as always. Myung is actually audible(!) and his bassline seems more... interesting than some of his other basslines in recent times, or maybe that's a direct result of him being more audible. Mr. Bear is still pumping out the awesome riffs, I was surprised that his solo was so short but it makes a change I guess. Finally Jordan's up to his usual antics, I think he impressed me the most personally.

Quite looking forward to this album now.

Do you think they will they make a shorter "radio" edit of this as they did with ARoP?

I usually don't like those, because I think the good parts tend to be cut away...

The pre-chorus, I mean. :) Not the rest of the song. That part that Kiske sings that rises.

I'm really rather impressed.  Seems the new dynamic in the band is working out well so far for this album.

I imagine an intro where that choir comes in much sooner, and maybe a cutting of the classical piano and one of the chorus reprises. I would rather they not cut anything, but this is an 8+ minute song. :)

Good post. I don't hear THAT much SFAM in it, but certainly elements that would not seem out of place in SDOIT. Could definitely have been the follow-up to that album.

Anyway, don't you think people it is strange for a band like DT to release a single almost 3 months before the release of the album? Man, the song will be burned in that time! too much time to hear just one song. I think I'll listen 5 or 100 times and will be enough till the release.

I don't think so, but he did his own backing an octave lower from the sound of it. It could be Petrucci doing backing too, but usually when Petrucci and/or Mike did backing they had third or fifth harmonies instead of octaved harmonies.
