Am I the only one that doesn't really hear all this supposed noodling? Maybe I just have a different definition of the word.
Yeah I don't get it. Apart from a couple of songs in the middle, I'd say the album is less meandering/whimsical than Opeth usually are. :lol Not that that's a criticism, I love Opeth, it's just a feature of their music that has always been there.
I totally agree! I think that all the Opeth fans calling this album aimless, noodling, meandering, and whimsical are being unfair. It's probably less aimless, noodling, meandering, and whimsical than any other Opeth album besides Damnation.

You might be right. Like I said, it seems to be clicking for me a bit more. But I'm gonna give it a couple more spins. Granted you guys care, I will let you know how it works out.

if you haven't bought it yet, it's well worth getting the CD/DVD combo version.
the documentary included is pretty awesome and a great insight into the bad - some very funny moments with Mikael as well! :D

Thinking about it now, I'd probably put Watershed above Orchid. I dunno, ranking a catalog as consistent as Opeth's is difficult.

Morningrise, however, will maintain its current position.

Some of these I need to give more of a listen to, but this is my tenative ranking, and it's really fucking hard to rank Opeth.

Overall rankings are hard for me, but Damnation and Still Life are definitely at the bottom as far as I stand. Whereas Morningrise and Orchid are near the very tippy top.

That's a pretty accurate ranking except Still Life is waaaaay too low.

Nah, Still Life is just about right.  Putting MAYH with the first two albums though?  Criminal.

Objectively speaking of course.
It isn't with those two, I really like it and it's a league above the bottom two. It's just less great than the rest.

Ariich is a freak, or somehow has more hours in the day than everyone else.

I've been listening through their Discography today, and its set in stone for me that Watershed completely :metal :metal :metal
I have a little extra money too, so I might go get Heritage today, if the local record store doesn't have the new Brutal Truth.

with Orchid & Morningrise I've never been really able to get into them as much as other Opeth albums so I think it's probably unfair to rank them with them.

and yes, that is Heritage you see at number 2. I absolutely LOVE this album.  :)

MAYH
Ghost Reveries
Blackmanwater Park
Watershed
Deliverance
Morningrise
Orchid
Still Life

Don't get me wrong, I really like Heritage but It's definitely one of their weaker albums to me. I am still listening to it as much as I would any album though fo' sure dawg.

Still Life
My Arms, Your Hearse
Blackwater Park
Ghost Reveries
Morningrise
Heritage
Orchid
Watershed
Damnation
Deliverance

Something like that. This could change.
My list would be fairly similar to this, but I haven't yet heard Heritage. Can't believe how many people rank the first two/three so low. D/D would be my two least favourites aswell - due to the fact that they have less balance than the others. If they were included into a double album, they might be higher (although maybe not cause there is not as much variation in each individual song). Still stellar songwriting though, and I agree its very hard to rank. Mine will probably change a lot because I'm still *relatively* new to Opeth.

We're doing another list? Oh well, when in Rome...

Damnation
Still Life
Watershed
Blackwater Park
Ghost Reveries
Heritage
My Arms Your Hearse
Morningrise
Deliverance
Orchid

I need more time with Heritage.
I'll edit when I find its place.

Edit: Heritage is pretty damn good, but not top 3 worthy.

I thought there was one other person here who loved Damnation too. But I've been wrong before. Yeah, total love for that album, and it wasn't even the first album I picked up. I got Ghost Reveries first, then Still Life. I think Damnation was bought before Watershed came out. Not sure how it happened, but we had an affair for months until Still Life found out. She was pissed; even threw me out of the house. It took a while, but we compromised on a divorce, and ever since Damnation and I have been enjoying each other's company in a two-story in Gothenburg.

^I like Damnation a lot as well. I just get bored with In My Time of Need pretty easily but I can still listen to it. Hope Leaves was great when I saw 'em touring for Watershed. Shitty thing, however, was that they played it uncapoed so it was in a distractingly lower key.

Listening to Heritage again because Dark Castle convinced me, and it... is starting to sound a little better. Slither is a jam-fest, I really do like that song as it feels most cohesive overall. More listening time required yeaaahh.
