I find the lack of this band disturbing in GMD. In Flames has become one of my favorite bands through the last months, with Clayman being their best album IMO (Followed by Colony, Whoracle and The Jester Race). ITT, we talk about their Gothenburg era, the current post-Clayman era, and of course, Anders Fridén's dreadlocks.
Discuss.
-
YES, I've been a huge fan of these guys since like 6th grade. Clayman and Whoracle are my favorite albums by them but all their stuff is good. I saw them a while ago with BTBAM and they put on an amazing show. The crowd singing along to Trigger was definitely the highlight of the night. :metal
-
One of the first experiences I had with any form of Death metal, and I hold them dear to my heart ever since. All their work is amazing IMO, even the later albums are excellent.
Fav albums: Jester Race (perfection), Reroute to Remain, Come Clarity, Whoarcle
-
First metal band I saw live along with Megadeth and Children of Bodom back in 08. Favorite albums: Clayman, Soundtrack To Your Escape, Come Clarity.
-
Seen them live, and i had a period where i pretty much only listened to them.
Very solid band, though i personally think the latest albums has been going downhill.
-
First heard them in a WoW pvp video (same guy that made another with DT"s Octavarium, so he's basically the guy that got me into all this music) and I've been hooked ever since. Reroute to Remain is probably my favorite, and first album I had from them. A lot of people didn't like Come Clarity, but I think it was good. No way in hell I'd defend A Sense of Purpose though.
Favorite albums: Reroute to Remain, Clayman, Colony

Reroute is AMAZING!!!!
Come on, Sense of Purpose isn't that bad.

Its horrible...
-
Well I didn't mind it. :(
-
I like me some In Flames. Anyone like their 1st album, Lunar Strain, that has Michael Stanne (from Dark Tranquillity) on vocals? It's interesting, if a bit raw and unpolished.

Same. I think it's a pretty good album considering the greatness of The Chosen Pessimist.
-
the greatness of The Chosen Pessimist.
:heart
-
When i saw them live back in 2008, they opened with The Chosen Pessimist.
Still, A Sense of Purpose was a major disappointment.
Surely it has a few cool riffs here and there, but what's up with the vocals?
Anders has been going downhill the last few years imo, his vocals will never be as strong again. :(
On another note, i like Come Clarity.
Might not be my favorite, but i still like it.
First In Flames-album i bought actually. :metal
-
A Sense of Purpose has a really bad aging. The Chosen Pessimist, Sober and Irrelevant and I'm the Highway (Edit: And Move Through Me) are pretty cool and overall the album has good riffs, but WTF with Anders' vocals? I cringe everytime I hear the "PLEEEASE HEEEAL MEEEE" part in Delight and Angers, he sounds like a muppet. Come Clarity is IMO the best album they've done since Clayman. I like Reroute to Remain a lot too (Specially the Title Track)... Soundtrack to your Escape, however, is in the bottom of my list along with ASoP, I just haven't fully gotten into it (Even though it has some good songs). As for Lunar Strain, it's really good. Dreamscape is a fucking masterpiece.
-
Awesome band of course. My first and favorite album of theirs is Whoracle, with Colony a close second. As for the newer stuff, I haven't heard much of ASoP, but I liked Come Clarity a lot.
-
RR/ASoP > CC/STYE
STYE is so abysmal I can't bring myself to buy it for the two songs on it that I absolutely love

I have to somewhat agree. people rag on A Sense of Purpose so much, but Soundtrack was pretty weak. ASOP is way better than Soundtrack.
Soundtrack did have Touch of Red though, killer song.
-
I don't really see the hate for STYE, at least it isn't close to being compared to ASoP, which was horrible. :D
STYE has:
The Quiet Place
Dead Alone
Touch of Red
My Sweet Shadow
and more.. can't remember exactly what songs it has xD

Besides touch of red I just say meh. I loved Reroute, Come Clarity and a lesser extent ASOP nut never really got into Soundtrack that much. Come on ASOP did have;
Mirrors Truth
Disconnected
Sleepless Again
Alias
Delight and Angers
Chosen Pessimist
-
The vocals drags the album down, some of those songs would've been good if they had been recorded 10 years ago.
Besides, The Quiet Place & My Sweet Shadow are 2 of their most known songs. ;)

Hmm...you got me there. Also the video for Touch of Red was awesome!!
Nevertheless, Andres vocals are a bit annoying on ASOP, but I can still enjoy the album. Gonna be very interesting where they go from here, I don't know if we will get material anytime soon because of the bands problems at the moment.

Personally i really liked the album when it came out, but it hasn't aged very well.
Some of the songs that was "wow" at first became boring etc. ;)
It has more boring-songs than awesome ones, but if i would name some of my personal favorites on it, they would be:
The Chosen Pessimist (which is a type of song they've never done before)
Sleepless Again
The Eraser (only bonus track tho)
About new material, they will be collaborating with the drum n bass (more recently electronic rock)-band Pendulum, this collaboration resulting with a song on their coming album "Immersion".
Taken from Wikipedia:
"In an interview with Pendulum frontman Rob Swire, it is confirmed that In Flames is a collaborator for Pendulum's third studio album, Immersion. Before this interview, it was hinted in an image which showed some of the members of In Flames in Pendulum's studio with Rob Swire and bass guitarist Gareth McGrillen, which started speculation. The song has been revealed to be titled "Self versus Self"."
The release-date for this album is set to be May 24th.
About a new-album themselves:
"According to an update on their official website, posted February 24th, 2010. They are taking a break right now to spend time with families and prepare for their two festivals next summer whilst also slowly writing songs for a new album."
;)

All the tracks on the Mirrors Truth Ep could have easily replaced songs on the album, all great songs.
Interesting updates, but I think I'm right when it might be a while for the new material.
-
I just listened to Clayman again yesterday. So good and so surpisingly melodic :metal
-
Sountrack is definitely IF's weakest album (well, except the debut IMO). The other three albums in the newer style have been really solid; RtR is one of their best albums and ASoP was great as well.
Screw the haters. :P
-
I agree that Soundtrack is one of their Weakest efforts. However I like a lot songs like Touch of Red, In Search for I, My Sweet Shadow and Evil in a Closet (Which starts pretty weak but has an incredible solo and an awesome chorus). Don't like the resto of the songs though. If someone asks me what album is better between this and ASoP I'd say it's a draw. I like 4 songs of ASoP and I like 4 songs of this album.
EDIT: It is no longer a draw. I didn't remember I also like Superhero of the Computer Rage from STYE.
-
How about The Quiet Place?
-
How about The Quiet Place?
Badass song right there.
ASOP isn't that bad, at least not as bad as everyone says it is. The Chosen Pessimist, The Mirror's Truth, and I'm The Highway are pretty damn sick.
-
They're one of those bands I like initially, but by the 3rd or 4th song I get too bored to continue. For example, I have the Jester Race but I've never listened to it all the way through. Moonshield is awesome, but after that I get more uninterested with every song.
Would Clayman or Whoracle suit me any better?

We should do an In Flames survivor.
-
The chosen Pessimist is my favourite In Flames song :)
The only songs that I like on Soundtrack are My Sweet Shadow and The Quiet Place - which admittedly are both AMAZING, but the rest is so zzzzz. Oh, except for F(r)iend when done live. The chorus is so bruuutal! :metal I love how Anders does it much much deeper.
-
We should do an In Flames survivor.
Yes.
-
We should do an In Flames survivor.
Yes.
Who will run it? I know I'm kind of new here, but I would be up for it, I suppose.
-
Well I'd like to do it, but I've never done a survivor before.
-
Well I'd like to do it, but I've never done a survivor before.
Me neither. I think it would be fun. :D
-
I too am a survivor virgin.
-
Someone do it!
-
I guess I can start it later today, but I would like to see a little more support in this thread. Only 3 people have said its a good idea.
-
I'd definitely participate.
-
Alright, I guess I'll start with Lunar Strain first, unless there are any objections to that.
-
Most people don't know Lunar Strain, why don't you start with TJR?
-
Because I'd like to do the entire discography... and Lunar Strain is an awesome album, imo.
-
It is indeed, but to start with something that attracts people to, I'd start with TJR. Next I'd put a Lunar Strain+Subterranean Survivor.
-
Okay, that will work. I won't start it until someone "approves" it in the Ongoing and Upcoming Survivors thread, though.
-
Starting it as soon as The Offspring survivor is over, which is in the finals now. Should be about a week or so?
-

I just relistened to Colony and decided that Zombie Inc. is a top 5 In Flames song. It's just awesome.

Very correct.
I listened to In Flames for the first time in ages yesterday. It was rather awesome. Good car speakers + sub made it even better :metal
-
A good audio system makes everything better. What kind of speakers and sub do you have?
-
A mediocre 5.1 set.

THANK GOD IT'S NOT A 5.0!

It was 4.0 temporarily when one of my cables broke :loser:
In other news, My Sweet Shadow has to be one of the most powerful metal songs i've ever heard.

I agree with this. My top 5 (not in order) would be: My Sweet Shadow, The Quiet Place, Zombie Inc., Only For the Weak, and Trigger.

Please. Someone break this tie...

Ironic how STYE has MSS and TQP, easily their best latest songs, and yet most of the album is the worst stuff they've written in their entire career.
Evidently those two were on the Ballmer peak and the others were past it :lol
~
In other In Flames discussion, what is wrong with the production on A Sense of Purpose? The music sounds so horribly, horribly flat and just..not heavy or punchy at all, even though I know that it should be. Ander's slightly iffy new vocals don't help, but it just sounds so horribly muddy :( I much prefer it to CC/STYE/RTR though, bring back the proper acoustic interludes! I just wish Anders would have kept his old vocal style.
Apologies for grammar.
-
Not sure I agree, I think the production is fine. The weakest sounding album since Whoracle is RtR, but the music is excellent enough for it not to really matter.
-
Yeah, RTR has really crappy production. I was listening to it just yesterday, noticed that, and that actually it's gone way down in my rankings of IF albums.
To get the full punch out of ASOP I have to turn the volume right up, something just isn't right.
-
RtR has a few great songs (the title track is probably their best song ever) but most of it is shit.
-
Ho about System, Trigger, and Cloud Connected?
-
(the title track is probably their best song ever)
wat
-
(the title track is probably their best song ever)

It has their most epic chorus, and is extremely well written. In Flames never really was a band that had a ton of perfect songs, just a bunch of great ones. And I happen to think that RtR is one of their few perfect ones.

I agree. Another title track that is awesome is Clayman. That's probably my favourite IF song.
-
I love RTR, it's my favourite along with Jester. It's just so damn consistent, great songs all the way through, and I can't say that I've noticed anything too bad about the production.
RTR
System
Trigger
Cloud Connected
Egonomic
Drifter
Transparent
Free Fall
Great stuff.
-
Yeah RtR has so many great songs on it, enough that the production just doesn't bother me.
-
Come Clarity and The Jester Race title tracks > RTR & Clayman title tracks :hat

I'd say Satellites and Astronauts is another perfect one. Love that song.

*thinks long and hard with squinted eyes* There is so much awesome there, it's a hard choice. I must have to agree with you, just.

We need a tie breaking vote!!
https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=13444.0
-
Some votes for the Whoracle survivor would be cooool.
-
We will need more votes if we are to continue this survivor. We're on Colony, which is one of In Flames' best album so I'm expecting more votes, or else I may have to put an end to it.
https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=14236.0
Also, In Flames is teh awesome. :metal
-
I'll totally take part in the Colony one. Now we're into the territory of albums that I know well, so bring it on! :D
-
Guys, Whoracle is teh awesome. Listening to Gyroscope right now and it just blew my mind. Never paid much attention to that album until now, and it's incredible.
-
Epic thread bumpage.
Honestly, I like TJR better than Whoracle, but Gyroscope is awesome. Also, I think we might need an album ranking?
Clayman
Colony
Come Clarity
The Jester Race
Whoracle
Reroute to Remain
Soundtrack to Your Escape
A Sense of Purpose
Lunar Strain
-
Here goes mine:
1. Clayman
2. Whoracle
2. Colony (Got to re-listen to Colony to declare which one is better)
4. The Jester Race
5. Come Clarity (Their best '00s album, sometimes it even tops TJR)
6. Reroute to Remain
7. Lunar Strain
8. A Sense of Purpose
9. Soundtrack to Your Escape
What surprises me the most is that, just like Megadeth, my least favorite album from them (StYE) has some incredible songs in there like The Quiet Place, Superhero of the Computer Rage and Evil in a Closet just to name a few. A Sense of Purpose has grown a lot on me as well. Maybe because of my rediscovering of songs like The Chosen Pessimist or Alias.
Also DAT SOLO in The Hive :metal
-
STYE actually used to be my second favorite IF album a few months ago. The Quiet Place, My Sweet Shadow, Touch of Red, Evil in a Closet are all awesome. It all changed when I started relistening during the survivor, and I absolutely fell in love with Colony and TJR.
Also DAT SOLO in Zombie, Inc. :metal :metal :metal
-
So Clayman is a good album to buy first then?
-
Absolutely. It's their best by far. My personal favorites from than album are "Only For The Weak", "Satellites and Astronauts", and "Bullet Ride"
EDIT: I'd like to add that "The Chosen Pessimist" is the best thing they've ever done, ever.
-
1. Clayman/
-. Colony
3. Reroute to Remain
4. Come Clarity
5. A Sense of Purpose/
-. Whoracle
7. The Jester Race
-. Soundtrack to Your Escape
9. Lunar Strain
Pretty tough doing a full ranking, hence there being three ties.
-
Colony
Whoracle
Clayman
The Jester Race
Reroute to Remain
Come Clarity
A Sense of Purpose
I haven't heard Lunar Strain and STYE. It's been quite long time since I listened to CC and ASOP but I remember that I didn't like them. Colony, Whoracle and Clayman are all great albums and it's pretty tough to rank them.
-
This is tough, but here goes;
1. Reroute to Remain
2. The Jester Race
3. Come Clarity
4. Soundtrack to Your Escape
5. Whoracle
6. Clayman
7. Colony
8. A Sense of Purpose
9. Lunar Strain

IF are one of the bands that died in the 00's. Andres stopped growling and the music started to simplify to an almost metalcorish nature.
One of the fewer new metal bands that I when first heard in the 90's, thought "there was more life to metal than Maiden Megadeth and Metallica". Clayman was the last good album. In the others there are slips here and there of good music but nothing outstanding that reminds me of the band that wrote TJR, Whoracle and Colony.
The drumming has become so tedious too it pains me.
-
I think they've had a bit more than "slips" of good music here and there. You're right that they've completely died now, though. Since Jesper left, I don't think theres any hope for a good album now.
-

I agree with almost all of this. I think Reroute to Remain had good songs but after that they've become mediocre. Now that Jesper is gone, they'll probably be even worse on the next album. He founded the band and IIRC, his name is in the credits of every IF song. Now there are no more original members so how can the band continue? Stratovarius made a great a great album although Timo Tolkki left but I think, judging on the last few albums, that IF won't be able to do anything good.
-
One thing that kept In Flames' quality throughout all its changes was Jesper's amazing ability to compose kick-ass riffs. Yes, Björn also's involved in that, but Jesper was the most important riff maker in all of In Flames history. Without him, I doubt that the next In Flames album will be a good one.
-
Are the guys even working on some new material?? Any ideas on replacement guitarists. Perhaps we'll see another change of direction on the next record.
-
Now that I've listened to both Colony and Whoracle and after a long discussion with my ears, I've come to the conclusion that Whoracle is better but by a very short margin. I could understand why some people consider Colony the best In Flames album. I mean it has one of the most perfect 4 song streaks in a Metal album (Embody the Invisible-Ordinary Story-Scorn-Colony). All of them are in my list of best IF songs ever.
-
...so you're telling me Zombie, Inc. wouldn't be included in that?
Does not compute.
-
Zombie Inc is pretty good, but... I don't know. Maybe I'll give it another chance.
-
The guitar solo is probably one of the best ever. Not a joke.
-
The guitar solo is probably one of the best ever. Not a joke.
Yes, it's amazing, and my second favouirite song on the album. That middle section is pure bliss.
-
It's my second or third favorite IF song overall.
-
Have they got a new guitarist yet?
-
Nope. :\
-
I don't think we'll see a new album for a while.
-
I don't think we'll see another album that's anywhere near decent ever...
-
I don't think we'll see another album that's anywhere near decent ever...
You are a man of little faith. :lol
I think it will be interesting to see what they come up with. I think we will all need to have an open mind when it surfaces.
-
I'll definitely have an open mind when listening to it, but I don't really have high hopes for it. Jesper was their primary songwriter, so I'm not sure the rest of the band has much left in them.
-
Well you never know...They still are professional musicians so maybe Jesper was just taking the lead, and now that he's gone the other ones have some room to create.
PS: I don't know anything about In Flames BTW.
-

This should change. (with their older albums anyway...)

I can say the same thing about you and Unexpect. ;)
(Gonna check out Clayman in the coming days though, so don't worry :tup)
-
Yeah, I'll end up listening to Unexpect eventually. Maybe later tonight if I have time.
-
Cool! :tup Just remember that In a Flesh Aquarium can take a while to grow on you...It's far from an accessible album :lol
FAKE EDIT: Listening to Clayman right now! :metal
-
So Clayman was pretty good. Nothing earth-shattering but great melodic death metal or whatever it's called. I'll need to listen to it more to have a better impression but so far I like it!
-
:tup :tup
I'll listen to Unexpect tomorrow. I'm still in pain from my basketball game earlier. :\
-
Haha no problem! Tell me your impressions when you can :tup
-
I love their first 5 albums. Whoracle is a "melodeath" milestone.
-

Clayman took me quite a few listens to really get in touch with it. Keep listening and the songs will grow on you.
-
Clayman was my first IF album and it clicked pretty much instantly. Colony took a while to grow on me but ended up becoming just as good.
Whoracle is good, but there are a few pretty boring songs on it. On a par with ASoP on the whole.
-
I was looking for this thread yesterday but I couldn't find it for some reason.
Anyway, while doing some revision for my Java module, I was looking through some old coursework that I had handed in and noticed that I had accidentally left a JDialog class called "JDialogwiththestars" :neverusethis:
I probably lost a mark for that too :lol

Clayman clicked with me very fast too. Colony has become my favorite, although at first I thought Whoracle and Clayman are better.
-
Well would you look at that. (https://www.metalunderground.com/news/details.cfm?newsid=60611)
-
No jesper = it'll be lame :(
-
Yeah my hopes are not very high for this album, to be honest.
-
Wow, surprising, so Bjorn will be doing all the guitar parts I'd say. I have a feeling they will just get a touring guitarist, could be wrong.
-
I have no idea how it'll turn out. To be honest, I haven't listened to A Sense of Purpose at all. As far as the discussion from the last page or so, I don't think they've been that bad pre-ASOP (not saying it's bad), Reroute to Remain is easily my favorite by them.
-

Reroute is my favourite too. You should check out ASOP, it's pretty okay.
-
I can't decide between Whoracle and Colony. Both great albums.
-
Even though there's no Jesper, I'm still looking forward to the next album. Who knows, maybe they can produce something decent?
-
It'll be their first album without Jesper right?
-
Iaindeed.
-

Yeah, I'm sure the other four can produce something solid, they have all worked together for years, should be interesting.
-
I've been an In Flames fan since I was 14, I'm 24 now and I still love them. They have a couple albums that I think are mediocre but overall they still kick ass. If you have any doubts about ASOP, try it out...It grew on me a whole lot and I like it a lot more then Soundtrack which is just horrible.
Album Ratings -
Lunar Strain - 7/10...Good Start but something is missing
The Jester Race - 10/10...Classic Metal album
Whoracle - 8/10...Not as good as TJR but still good
Colony - 9/10...My 2nd favorite album
Clayman - 6/10...Stale sounding at times but I still enjoy it
Reroute to Remain - 8/10...Totally refined their sound despite the arguments...Easily my 3rd favorite.
This is where the albums start to go downhill
Soundtrack to your Escape - 3/10...Nu Metal, gay keyboards, no solos WTF!?
Come Clarity - 5/10...Step in the right direction, solos/leads are back every song is pretty decent.
A Sense of Purpose - 5/10...I like this album about as much as Come Clarity, they need to change again for the next one.

From In Flames' Facebook page:
"Album is done boys and girls.
Mixing is taking place right now and we are very happy with the result/IF"
Cool.
-
I'm a huge fan, but what's with the retarded new album title?
-
I didn't even know there was a title. :lol
Sounds of a Playground Fading sounds very dark. I'm not really sure why they chose that title, but we'll see when the album comes out.
-
I didn't know there was a title either. Good news that it's done, looking forward to it. I keen to get my hands on it, Jesper or not.
-
Also didn't know about the title. But it sounds like Soundtrack to Your Escape, which is not really a good thing.
-
It definitely sounds like a title that In Flames would come up with.
-
I like the title, it's very dark and eerie.
-
I like the title, it's very dark and eerie.
-
Definitely excited for this, but not sure what to expect with Jesper gone.
-
Definitely excited for this, but not sure what to expect with Jesper gone.
Yeah, same. :/
Hoping for the best though.
-
Soundtrack is dreadful, though The Quiet Place and My Sweet Shadow are fucking awesome, and f(r)iend is killer live (because Anders really beefs up the vocals)
-
I quite like Dead Alone and Touch of Red as well. The rest is not very good...
-
Evil in a Closet is good too. The album has good stuff but really just falls short from the rest of their discography.
-
Yeah, I forgot about that one. Great ballad!
Shit, the more I think about it, the more I realize that there are quite a few awesome songs on that album. I honestly can't pinpoint the reason why this album doesn't hold up against the rest of their discography. maybe it's just because it's a different style than everything else and therefore it's not as well liked...
-
Most of the songs are decent, but just lacks the depth and atmosphere I think of all their other later albums. Lack of diversity too, even Reroute, Clarity and Purpose had a little variety, Soundtrack lacks this IMO.
-
Yeah, I guess that's true. However, I find that lack of diversity inherent in the songs themselves, not necessarily throughout the album. My Sweet Shadow and The Quiet Place are completely different from Touch of Red and F(r)iend, for example. But within those songs it gets a bit repetitive.
EDIT: Does this post make any sense? :lol
-
I guess I see your point there. I'm listening to the album right now. It's good, it just doesn't have the lasting power as most of the other albums do. It's just missing that something that makes me want to listen to it over and over again.

Swedish metallers IN FLAMES have officially recruited Niclas Engelin from fellow Swedes ENGEL as their new second guitarist.
Engelin has been touring with IN FLAMES for the past couple of years as the replacement forJesper Strömblad, who quit the band in February 2010 in order to continue receiving treatment for his alcohol addiction.
The first official photo of the new IN FLAMES lineup can be viewed below.
IN FLAMES has set "Sounds Of A Playground Fading" as the title of its upcoming tenth album, tentatively due in May. 13 songs were laid down for the CD, which was recorded at the band's IF Studios in Gothenburg with engineer Roberto Laghi (HARDCORE SUPERSTAR, LOK, SONIC SYNDICATE). The group states, "We are very happy with the result."
IN FLAMES's latest album, "A Sense of Purpose" (2008), shifted 20,000 copies in the United States during its first week of release. This was slightly less than the opening tally of "Come Clarity" (Ferret), which sold just under 24,000 copies in February 2006 to debut at position No. 58.
Good Fight Music is the new North American label home for the classic IN FLAMES catalog, starting with "The Jester Race" through "Soundtrack To Your Escape". These titles, which until recently were unavailable in the marketplace, were put back on music retailers' shelves and made available at digital stores (iTunes) on November 22, 2010.

Not familiar with this guy myself so I can't comment. I guess if he's been filling in live and has been meshing well with the guys, everything should be fine.
-
Niclas played in the band for a short period between Whoracle and Colony, and (as said in that Blabbermouth article) filled in for Jesper on the recent tours so he's probably the natural choice. I still don't have expectations for the new album, as I haven't really liked their newer releases.
-
I'm really, really hoping this will be a good album. Doesn't look like it will be though...
-
Looking at the quality-drop during the last albums, I doubt I'll ever try this one.
Kinda sad seeing as I grew up with their music, and seeing them live was kinda cool. (especially since they're from the same city as me) :P
-
Come on guys, don't write it off until you hear it, I have an open mind and am gonna give this a good go.

That.
Reroute to Remain is one of my favourites, Come Clarity is also great, and A Sense of Purpose was pretty good. Don't know what to expect, but there's every chance it'll be good.

Well of course I'm looking forward to it. There's no way I wouldn't listen to it after listening to them for the last 5 years or so

They announced the release date on Facebook. It's August 8, 2011.

It will be leaked before then, don't worry.

It will be leaked before then, don't worry.
Yeah, true. I am really eagerly awaiting this. I think if they stick to a similar formula, I should enjoy it. I do have a feeling though that this could be disasterous though. Although, I'm optimistic and a first day buyer nevertheless.
-
I know it won't happen, but I would be really happy if they included an instrumental track a la Wayfaerer/Dialogue with the Stars/Man Made God style, or an acoustic, soft instrumental track a la The Jester's Dance/Whoracle/Pallar Anders Visa style, or a song like Square Nothing. All of them are epic songs.

Swedish metallers IN FLAMES will release a new digital single, "Deliver Us", on May 10 via Century Media. The song comes off the band's tenth album, "Sounds Of A Playground Fading", which will be released on the following dates:
Sweden - June 15
Germany - June 17
Rest Of Europe - June 20
North America - June 21
13 songs were laid down for the CD, which was recorded at the band's IF Studios in Gothenburg with engineer Roberto Laghi (HARDCORE SUPERSTAR, LOK, SONIC SYNDICATE).
In an exclusive interview with the Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet, IN FLAMES vocalist Anders Fridén, 38, revealed that "Sounds Of A Playground Fading" will almost certainly challenge the band's fans' musical expectations.
"We have some songs that pretty much go against the hard rock formula," he said. "There's a song called 'The Attic' where we have an accordion playing the chorus instead of me singing it. Another song begins with a spoken-word part that evolves into a kind of hard DEPECHE MODE-type thing. We also have some really fast, typical IN FLAMES tunes.
He added, "We've never denied where we come from, but at the same time we like to challenge our listeners."
"Sounds Of A Playground Fading" is the first IN FLAMES album to be recorded without founding guitarist Jesper Strömblad, who quit the band in February 2010 in order to continue receiving treatment for his alcohol addiction.
"It's a really sad situation," Anders said. "We're talking about a friend whom we've known for a really long time. It's like a relationship that has burnt out. It just didn't work out anymore. He's a really great guy in many ways, but it's important that everybody can get along. If they don't, it affects a lot of people."
He continued, "We've lived with this for many years, and it's really sad that things are the way they are. I wish they weren't."
Fridén also talked about the often dark lyrical content on "Sounds Of A Playground Fading".
"Some people I know have passed away, and then you have kids being born," he explained. "I've got two kids myself and, of course, it has affected the songwriting. Suddenly you're not alone anymore."
-
Hard Rock?
Erp.
-
I don't know... It's different. That may be what the band needs.
-
I don't know... It's different. That may be what the band needs.
Maybe, but Come Clarity showed that they could mix modern metal with the traditional melodeath approach.
And as lame as parts of ASoP were (vocals near the top of that), songs like Chosen Pessimest prove they can write better things than hard rock.
-
Yeah, The Chosen Pessimist is pretty incredible.
-
This interview does have me a little concerned. An accordian and Depeche Mode.......hmm....maybe letters is right, it might be a change the band needs, but I'm one of the minority, that like later In Flames and ASOP was a pretty good album. Just have to wait and see. I'm looking forward to it nevertheless.
-
An accordion? WTF? That might work better than how he described it, or it might sound really stupid.
Hard Depeche Mode type thing? AWESOME! TELL ME MORE.
-
Still a month to go before we hear the single. :(
-
"We have some songs that pretty much go against the hard rock formula," he said. "There's a song called 'The Attic' where we have an accordion playing the chorus instead of me singing it. Another song begins with a spoken-word part that evolves into a kind of hard DEPECHE MODE-type thing."

No, he said it would sound like Depeche Mode, not like Lady Gaga.

I really like those album titles. Artwork is really good too. I'm actually looking forward to this. Although with the high number of tracks again I think it's safe to say they definitely will be following the same formula. More straight ahead short songs with similar hooks.

11. Jester’s Door

In Flames - In the Studio #1.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnQ33QVKpHs
They say they spent a long time recording the album, getting the right sounds etc. which is promising. The small snippet we heard sounded like regular later In Flames, but I think this could be a good sounding record. They seem more focused in this vid, considering the DVD of ASOP, where they looked like no one had any idea.
-
Not decided yet if I'm gonna check the new album out, personally I feel like the albums have gotten worse for every release, at least A Sense of Purpose which is my least favorite.
-
I think ASOP got a really bad wrap. It's on par with the rest of the later In Flames material, I never really understood why people thought it was significantly worse than their other album. Some good songs on it.
-
Yeah but, a few good songs isn't really enough to make an album great.
The Chosen Pessimist was probably my favorite because it was so unique, but it kinda feels to me a bit like the In Flames-sound has gotten a bit uninteresting, ASOP had some decent songs, but at the end of the day those songs aren't on par with the earlier stuff.
A lot of people criticized Come Clarity when it came out, but what I liked about CC was that it had a lot of variety, it wasn't just the 'typical' formula with heavy intro>some creaming>melodic chorus>repeat. :P
-
Come Clarity is a fantastic album, such a great atmosphere and really amazing songs all the way through. I will admit they sounded a little stale on ASOP, like they were just going through the motions. I still like the sound and enjoy the vibe of the album.
-
CC and RtR are both excellent albums. ASOP was good, but a little weaker than those two. The only one that was really below par was Soundtrack.

I agree, same with Reroute

Weird to read these opinions...ASOP and Soundtrack are my favorite modern-era In Flames albums. way, I'm pumped for the new one.

Soundtrack your favourite? :|

Yeah, I like them, but RTR and CC kick the shit out of ASOP and STYE IMHO. RTR and CC are just in another league.

Not quite.
1) A Sense of Purpose (shut up)

Second studio report. Good stuff.
-
How can soundtrack be so high up? It's an utterly riff-recycle affair.
-
Ehm... I don't know what to think about Deliver Us. The beginning is OK and the solo is great, but the vocals just don't do anything for me, and it sounds a lot like Soundtrack to Your Escape.
-
I like it. It's different than anything they're done before, but I think it's good.
-
I really like the music, and i'm sure the vocals will grow on me - they sound better than the ASOP vocals for sure. I hated his pseudo-growl on that. (Though TCP is my fav IF song..)
-
Where have you guys heard this song?
-
Where have you guys heard this song?
It was released as a single.
And might I remind everyone that telling people where to find a pirated version is against the rules.
-
I don't like it too much... but its not horrible, I'll give it a few shots.
-
Just listened to it.....basically.....it's not bad. It's decent. Quite different from anything else they have done which is a good thing. Chorus is quite good and I appriciate Anders actually trying to 'sing' more. Definitely not a trainwreck, looking forward to the album.
-
Deliver Us isn't bad, but it isn't great, either. But I have to say, it's better than anything on ASOP, 'cause Anders isn't using the weak screaming style he had on it (and the few albums preceding it) and the production is better. Still, I think I won't buy the album when it comes out.
-
Anders' voice is just too whiny. I prefer his 'half-growl' to his plain singing on a track like that.
Other than the vocals it was, somewhat typically, uninspired but decent.
-
No way, singing > half-growling.
How else would we have the awesomeness of Crawl Through Knives?
-
Crawl Through Knives was so good. It was my favorite In Flames song for a while.
-
Crawl Through Knives was so good. It was my favorite In Flames song for a while.
Me too, the screamed second half of the chorus is amazing.
-
I was listening to Come Clarity the other day. That whole damn album is a fucking masterpiece!
-
Come Clarity is their best since Clayman, I was a little saddened they didn't stick to that style.

I agree with every single word of this.

But RtR.

No, CC is better.

Nah, both are great but RtR is more consistent. CC starts to get less interesting in the latter stages IMO.

True. Although, I've really grown to love the second half of the album a lot more than I used to. I'd put both albums in my top 3.

For some reason Whoracle doesn't grab me like the rest of their classic material. Hated RtR upon first listen but my opinion has been improving a lot lately. Lunar Strain is their only album I don't like, and haven't even listened to that one much. One of my favorite bands. :tup
-
Putting ASOP above albums like TJR, RTR and W just seems bizarre to me.

Fingers crossed.

It's the best thing they've done since Clayman, excluding Come Clarity.
-
Great to hear! Personally I prefer RtR to CC, but I'm still glad that you think it's good, really looking forward to it!
-
My only complaint is that they could have shortened it a bit because it gets a little samey near the end, but other than that it's pretty damn good.
-
Also, best songs: title track, Deliver Us, The Attic, A New Dawn, Liberation.
-
Great to hear! Personally I prefer RtR to CC, but I'm still glad that you think it's good, really looking forward to it!
Pretty much this.
My only complaint is that they could have shortened it a bit because it gets a little samey near the end, but other than that it's pretty damn good.
Honestly, as much as I love the band, I have accused them of this with every album since RTR. I'm not saying that's a bad thing though.
-
Oh god, you guys... A New Dawn is just so awesome.
-
Me getting very excited!!
-
I heard A New Dawn on youtube once and thought it was awesome!
Can't wait to get this!
-
So the album came out this week and I've listened to it on Spotify 3 times now, really really digging it! I'd say it's their best since RtR, slightly edging out Come Clarity for two reasons: (1) the sound quality is much nicer, and (2) while the album does suffer from the usual IF-album-dragging-a-bit factor, where this album succeeds is in the fact that some of the later songs are a little different. It drags a little just after the middle of the album, but then comes back full force with some more unusual stuff towards the end. Whereas Come Clarity starts amazingly but then just tails off a bit and gets a little samey.
-
Excellent news. Can't wait to get it, hopefully I can pick it up this weekend. What's the deal with Jester's Door, anything special?
-
Really unusual track. No obvious musical reference to the other Jester songs. It has a spoken word part, and then the rest is very electronic. Definitely not what I expect from IF, but I actually really dig it.
-
Man, you're getting me excited ariich, can't wait to get my hands on it. I'm gonna try and hold off listening to until I pick it up. :D
-
Picked it up but haven't listened to it all the way through yet. Should remedy that tonight.
-
A New Dawn is really an awesome track. I'd say top 10 IF songs probably.
-
A New Dawn seems amazing!
I'll try and pick up the album sometime soon.
-
I picked up the album and listened to it on the 22nd, and it is absolutely stellar! My favorite tracks are "Fear is the Weakness" and "Where the Dead Ships Dwell". But nearly every track is superb. Plus, the artwork is beautiful. :tup :tup :tup
-
Still trying to digest this one, it's taking me a lot longer to get into than most In Flames albums. Nothing negative, just isn't clicking yet. Except for Liberation, pretty sure I could of done without that. On the plus side the artwork is pretty cool.
-
Picked up this yesterday
(https://i832.photobucket.com/albums/zz245/imperatore6666/rmne/flamesformats1.jpg)
Only $49, a bargin if you ask me. Haven't listened to the album yet.
-
I'm really glad at how good the new album is - In Flames aren't dead yet!
-
I've listened through this album I think 3 times now, this is definitely a big grower. I'm actually having trouble digesting songs 3-10. The first two are awesome, the title track is easily one of the best things the band has ever done and Deliver Us is great.
All For Me, The Puzzle, Fear and Ships all have great qualities but as I listen I just can't seem to grab hold of anything, they leave me a little flat to be honest. The Attic is a really good track, different with some excellent melodies. The next three have the same issue as before. A New Dawn is amazing and Liberation is a good one too.
It's strange, with all In Flames material, I have really caught onto the material quickly and enjoyed it, this is just taking longer to get into, which surprises me. It has all the elements, but maybe some of the songs are less catchy I guess. Love the sound and the band doing something a little different. I will listen more, I feel it has great potential.
-
Finally getting around to listening to these guys, started with Clayman. It's been really awesome so far.
-
Good choice! Clayman is the best one!
-
I trust your rankings on the page before this to be accurate, as they usually are, and thus I will listen in that order.
-
Yep, my rankings are always right about everything ever. :P
-
Finished Clayman, went on to Colony. Pallar Anders Visa was a fantastic song. I also really liked Ordinary Story.

Yeah that song was really awesome. There hasn't been one that wasn't, though, really quality stuff.

Check out Reroute and Jester next.

And Whoracle!

Amazing song. I need to listen to that album again. I haven't listened to it for a while.
-
So I decided to give Colony a listen yesterday, because the other albums I've heard by In Flames I didn't enjoy that much, outside of a handful of songs (Come Clarity and Reroute To Remain).
Coming from someone that would have said "In Flames sucks" before listening to this album. I must say this album has changed my opinion on the band quite a bit, and I plan to check out their early stuff (Jester Race, Clayman, etc) as soon as I can (not really gonna bother with any of their newer stuff because I didn't like the two newest albums I've heard that much)
-
Colony is one of their best records definitely! I find it sad how the quality dropped after Clayman - Reroute is ok but after that they haven't made an album I would like.
-
So yeah, about the "Where the Dead Ships Dwell" video, I have to say...
WHAT THE FUCK DID I JUST WATCH
-
It is nice to see the high opinions of Jester Race to Clayman. I stopped after Clayman, as I got into DT and then prog, and fell out basically with metal for a bit. I heard their next three from a friend, and just did not like it. He swore by them, and was shocked when I thought Jester and Whoracle were their best. I saw Come Clarity and the others absent of what I thought of In Flames as.
-
So after a week of almost non-stop In Flames I must say I've fallen in love with this band.
Ranking of the albums I've heard so far
Clayman
Colony
Come Clarity (really grew on me)
The Jester Race
Whoracle
Reroute to Remain
Sounds Of A Playground...
Soundtrack (oh god this album...)
Not sure if I'm gonna listen to Lunar Strain or A Sense Of Purpose yet
-
If you are becoming that much of a fan, both those albums deserve a listen.
-

Recommend Listening to ASOP first, however. Of all the In Flames albums, Lunar Strain is IMO the hardest to get into.

I haven't heard Lunar Strain, but ASOP is pretty boring IMO. I wouldn't call it an abomination like some people do, it just doesn't evoke any feelings in me. Besides, if "oh god this album" means you dislike STYE, I bet you won't like ASOP much either.
-
ASOP does have their best song though. (Chosen Pessimist)
-
I'd actually say their best songs are As The Future Repeats Today, Only For The Weak, and Come Clarity (at least those are my 3 favorites)
-
ASOP does have their best song though. (Chosen Pessimist)
THANK YOU.
I absolutely adore ASOP. I kind of get why it's not super-popular around here, though, with the exception of The Chosen Pessimist, which is a fucking masterpiece on every level. One of my all-time favorite songs by anyone.
-
ASOP is on the bottom of the list, as it does nothing for me. Chosen Pessimist is a good track, but I think the best track there is Eraser (And it's a bonus track, that says a lot).
RONKINGS
Whoracle
Clayman
Colony
---The first three albums are always moving with the others in the 3 first places: They are so mind--blowingly good I can't even tell which one of them is better. Sometimes it goes Clayman/Colony/Whoracle, Sometimes Colony/Clayman/Whoracle, sometimes Clayman/Whoracle/Colony, and so on. They're never in a definite order. This is their current places--
Come Clarity
The Jester Race
Reroute to Remain
Sounds of a Playground Fading
Soundtrack to Your Escape
A Sense of Purpose
/
Haven't listened to Lunar Strain much to rank it in the list.

Anyone else think "My Sweet Shadow" is an awesome song! Definitely underrated and one of my fave In Flames songs.
-
hello i heard these guys on a pendulum song and now i want to check out more so if you nice people could tell me what is their best album to start with i would appreciate it very much thank you guise lol
...
Should I just start with the first album or what?
-
the new one will probably make my top 10 for 2011.
not a bad place to start
-
I'd say either Clayman Or Colony are good starting spots

You Could start with Clayman, one of their best albums. Pinball Map and Only for the Weak are the songs that got me hooked. Trigger is also good.

DON'T start with the first album! It doesn't represent their sound anymore. The newer records have more of that style heard on the Pendulum collaboration (but with much less electronic elements obviously) but many people, including myself, prefer the earlier records so it's not easy to say which is the best album to start with.
I recommend Clayman, it's one of their best albums IMO and it's a kind of transition album from the Gothenburg-style metal into the modern sound. After that: if you like the heavier side of In Flames, you can get Colony and Whoracle, but if you want more clean singing and listener-friendly songs, get Reroute to Remain or Come Clarity.

Has anyone heard this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZpiT4ANvT8)? :lol

Only For The Alejandro :lol

Has anyone seen them on the current tour? I'll be seeing them Feb. 11. Pretty stoked, even if the newer material isn't as strong.
:metal

The show was amazing. other then

This is what I and many other people believe happened. Trivium went past their set time which forced In Flames to go past their curfew. The cops were already there before, and someone from their team or other, had called to report a fake bomb, A BOMB!!! why in albq. during In Flames, doesn't make sense. Me My friend and my other friend were at a bar next door, and no one told them. wouldn't it make sense to evacuate all surrounding areas. Anyways, I believe it was just to make them leave since they went past curfew.
-
never knew this thread existed... love love love this band....

Yup, I did.
My first time seeing them, and I am a TJR- Colony guy. But they put on a solid show, and seemed energetic throughout.

Looks like The Hive is the only song from that era they've been playing on the US tour so I assume the setlist left a lot to desire?

Aye. 5 cuts of the new album, one or two off the prior. They played the "hits" from Reroute, Soundtrack and what not. I knew this going in, so I prepped myself with listening to most of the stuff. And I do enjoy the hits a lot.
They played Swim off of Clayman, which I do not prefer (but like the album). In general, they seem to play the stuff off the older albums that make me scratch my head. The Hive and Swim over Episode 666 or Gyroscope and Pinball Map?
-

Most new fans probably haven't heard Whoracle, Colony and Clayman at all (not even the classic songs) and most old-school fans have heard the older "hits" many times already so maybe IF think it's ok to play something more obscure from those days.
-
I gotta brag for a second here.....the first time I saw them was in 2006 on the Come Clarity tour which was also with Trivium and In Flames played the greatest set I could ask for:
Pinball Map
Leeches
Trigger
Worlds Within The Margin
Inispid 2000
Behind Space
Crawl Through Knives
Black & White
Take This Life
Dial 595 - Escape
Cloud Connected
Drifter
Scorn
Gyroscope
Only For The Weak
Episode 666
Vacuum
The Quiet Place
Touch Of Red
My Sweet Shadow
Seeing them again on February 21st and it's gonna be awesome!!
-
Well, they certainly rocked. The newer material clicked with me a bit more hearing it performed live. Anders talked a lot to the crowd, he asked people around the bar why they weren't down near the front of the stage. The only song off the new album that I wanted to hear (A New Dawn) wasn't played, but everything else they played was solid. Definitely 'Where the Dead Ship Dwells' was my most memorable song they performed. This was a different show for me because I took my 12 year old brother along with me for his first live metal experience! :metal
If anyone has a chance to check them out on this tour, you won't be disappointed. :tup
-
How is it that Scandanavia has produced so many heavy metal bands? it's insane. Does someone want to give me a little history lesson?
-
I'm reviving this topic about a great band :) I had not listened to In Flames since I was like 15 or so, but last week, I decided to start listening again. So epic! Sounds Of A Playground Fading probably isn't my favourite album by them, but it's cool.
-
I think Playground was actually a pretty good comeback after losing Jesper. It takes a lot of listens to really click, but it's quite a mature album and a nice mix of styles for the band, good album.

At the moment, I feel I haven't listened to it enough to form a good opinion. As I said, I think it's pretty cool, but with some more listens it may become a bit better for me.
-
Love in Flames :heart
-
Playground clicked for me straight away, and I still say it's easily their best since Reroute to Remain, maybe even on a par with that one.

I still have it in regular rotation. Anyone who missed them live on the last NA tour has another chance, as they are on Lamb of God's fall NA tour.

Damnit, I'm really starting to love this band. Haven't been listening to anything else than In Flames for the last few days. I'll definitely go and see them if they decide to do a show in Holland anytime soon. Doesn't look like it's gonna be this year, but whatever. I can wait :)
-
I also saw them in 2006 on the Come Clarity tour. One of the best concerts I've ever been to. :metal
-
They happened to be a part of a fucked up situation...they got their set cut short cause apparently the venue got a bomb threat call and evacuated the place.. .it was really fucked up yet the bar next to the venue waant evacuarted....

I would pay the full price of the ticket for these songs alone, especially WWTM, which is one of my all-time faves from In Flames! I've never seen IF live, but if they played lots of old stuff, I would consider going to see them. Reroute to Remain is the latest release of theirs that I like.

:lol Man, I didn't even recognise Anders at first.

The dreads and the beard did change his looks a lot indeed!
The recent IF setlists have looked pretty depressive for people like me who don't care about their newer stuff. An example: https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/in-flames/2013/bottom-lounge-chicago-il-6bd856fe.html If I had a free ticket to their show, I would leave after The Hive :P
-
Literally the only two songs I've heard from this band are Freefall and Metaphor, but I really, really love those songs. Especially Metaphor, that's a really beautiful and addictive tune. But for some reason I have a feeling I won't like much of their other material... Maybe I should take a chance though... Nah. I'm gonna play it safe and continue down the path with the least amount of deviation. :P

I think they really have proved themselves with the style they are doing now. I keep going back to Playground as it's an amazing album. I still think they should throw in a couple more songs from the older album for more balance, but I think with a setlist like this, it's strong enough now. Although My Sweet Shadow is not a great closer.
-
Randomly, a friend just showed me Touch Of Red tonight... so yeah that was amazing and I'm going to continue slowly saturating my life In Flames lawlz but really this shit is great, any suggestions on where to start? /drunk

Man, all of them are worth having really. For the newer staff start with Reroute to Remain and Come Clarity. You need The Jester Race and Clayman is a safe option for a good mix of the old and new styles.
-
BUMP!
New album will be called "Siren Charms" and it'll be out in September :metal

FUCK YEAH!!!

I bought the box set of Playground and I think I played a few songs and turned it off.
Maybe I'll give it another chance.
-
I like Playground. I used to love ASOP but I don't anymore. Regarding the whole post-Clayman era, Come Clarity definitely takes the cake for me.
-
Cover art has been revealed on the website. (https://www.inflames.com/) I think it looks amazing. Also, the snippet on the website, though rather short, sounds good.
-
The cover reminds me of Come Clarity... I'm not expecting a return to roots, but the snippet sounds a little bit like older IF and I might have to check the album out if there's more of that style.
Also, they signed to Epic? Few metal bands are on major labels nowadays.
-
I'm so excited, the album cover is great and the snippet sounds money. But why are they releasing it in September?? Pretty far down the line...
-
The new single Rusted Nail was released on Spotify in Scandinavia but you can find it on Youtube.
I really don't dig it. The last album was pretty decent but this song is just boring and uninspired.
Hopefully there's much better tracks but I'm not really looking forward to the new one at this point. :-\
-
Yea pretty much follows the standard formula they have been doing for the last couple of years.
-
The intro is very good, but the verses suck bigtime, wow. The choruses are decent; I like how the intro guitar lick comes back in the background. The solo is boring. Overall, it's a big 'meh' for me. I liked the singles from SOAPF a whole lot better.
-
I listened to the new song and all I can say is: meh. I like the intro, but after that it goes to hell. I respect the band's desire to move on musically, but by now it's pretty clear that post-Reroute IF isn't meant for me. It's a shame, because they used to be damn good and I usually like it when bands evolve, but IF's new stuff is pretty generic IMO. Even Jesper himself has admitted that the last 3 albums he made with the band were not that good.
On a more positive note, I got Subterranean yesterday and it rocks! :metal Now I'm just waiting for my copy of the Lunar Strain box to arrive in the mail.
-
Remember the first time I heard Embody the Invisible from Colony. Never heard that mix of melodic and death metal before, I loved everything about it, it felt so refreshing and :metal back then. I think it was around the beginning of 2000.
-
Man, I just love the Post Clayman In Flames. I think both eras are teriffic, but I just can't deny how much I like what they have done since RTR. New song is great, I guess I'm a bit of a fan boy though it seems. The verse is a bit weird, but the chorus is great. Really looking forward to this album.

I mostly agree with this, I'm just as much a fan of the new stuff than old, and I thought Playground is one of their strongest releases......but the new song is probably gonna grow on me, cuz it didn't hit me right away.

Definitely, but for me Playground is really strong, but took a long time to grow. When I first heard it, it didn't do much for me at all, but now I think it's killer. Just a shame the new album is so far away.
-
Yeah, I loved Playground.
-
Yeah, I loved Playground.
It's just a well balanced, mature album.
-
I'm actually really loving this new song.
-
I gave up on the band after A Sense of Purpose to be honest. That album was pretty bad, but at the time I kept telling myself that it was good, and I think I believed it at the time. I saw the band live on that tour and they put on a good show. Since then I have just totally lost interest in them. Maybe melodeath isn't for me anymore, because I don't even revisit their classic stuff, and they do have some good albums in their back catalog. I feel bad saying that, considering they are from my home city.
-
Yeah, ASOP is a pretty bad album. I've listened to SOAPF and it's a bit better but, as with other new IF albums, there were just a couple of songs I liked (the title-track and A New Dawn) and the rest was forgettable. Even the few songs I like on the newer releases suffer because of Anders' moaning :-\
-

that was my intro to the band as well (a couple years after you). absolutely refreshing then, and even now – there's really nothing bad about that song, and the album was one of their last strong ones. i have the same reaction to "Zombie Inc.," which may have sold me even more than ETI!

I can't play it with Chrome either.

Will listen to this later, but why release two songs so damn early before release? If the album is ready and we are hearing two tracks, it should be out next month or early August.

I just YT:ed it. I thnk it's a conflict with Chrome having buildt in adobe flash that Soundscloud dosen't fancy or something like that.

I had to youtube it too.

Most Soundcloud shit seems to work for me though. Just not that one, apparently.
Through Oblivion isn't that bad at all, it's better than Rusted Nail IMO.
-
Looking through the comments, it's amazing at the high percentage of people that write the band off because of their early career. I think if people just accepted the band is not what they were, they would find some great metal in the last handful of albums.
-
It's a classic thing and will always happen with bands that have been gong on for a while and have established a certain genre. It's the constant circlejerk discussion about staying true or evolve.
Look at Opeth right now, even DT have hade their fair share of disbelief.
It's funny because over the years, basically since Bruce and Adrian joined there's no denying that Maidens formula of staying true have helped them gaining and keeping alot of their fans. It's a winning formula in the end whether you like or not. Fans know what to expect and let's face it, the casual/majority of fans couldn't care less about keeping something fresh or original. They just what an album that sounds good and can recognise soundwise being the band they love. You throw something indie or mainstream in the mix of a band with a steady fan base it's a collective suicide most of the time.
-
Well, the downside of Maiden's approach is that you don't spread your net so wide. But the benefit is that, on the whole, people either like your stuff or don't.
-
Yea I agree but keeping it "true" is also how Maiden grew their fan base through the years because it works both ways. Hardcore fans now what to expect from Maiden which spreads to younger fans that then get hooked on their newer stuff. Of course they have albums that are more popular than others but the core sound of Maiden have basically been kept intact through the years.
IM are unique though because basically every metal band old or new have some form of connection to Maiden. Every time all these bands in whatever genre talk about their childhood idols or favourite bands and Maiden comes up, all their younger fans will check them out in some way or another.
-

Or perhaps people just don't like the new stuff, regardless of who made it :P As I said earlier, I accept the change, but the new stuff isn't the kind of music I like.
I'm not surprised that so many old fans feel alienated, because IF have abandoned a lot of the elements that made them so special back in the day - the intense instrumentation, the cool guitar harmonies, the powerful vocals and the thoughtful lyrics. Instead we get American-sounding simplistic riffs, whiny vocals and lyrics like "I feel like shit, but at least I feel something". I'm not expecting another Colony or Clayman, but listening to the new songs is kinda sad, because this is the band that wrote Artifacts of the Black Rain, Jotun, Zombie Inc. and Square Nothing. Luckily the old albums are still there for me to enjoy, and I guess IF are doing something right because they have over a million FB likes, sell lots of records and play at fairly big venues.
I think I'll just stay out of this thread, because I don't want to whine all the time :lol At least Dark Tranquillity still put out quality melodeath...

Rusted Nail video;

Man, I'm loving this.
-
MUH DESTINATION MUH MISSION MUH INTUITION
Yeah, I guess the chorus is cool but... Man I don't know what to think about these singles. I don't have a good feeling about this album.
-
Rusted Nail is better than Oblivion, but I'm hoping Oblivion is the only song of its kind on the album. I'm actually really looking forward to this album.
-
Once you get over the fact that In Flames of today and the last couple of albums, bear no resemblance to the old IF melodic death metal sound, then I reckon your on the right track.
I don't care what kind of metal IF play, as long as the songs are good.
-
I don't think people bash on the new In Flames albums only because they are different, but the quality just hasn't been there. I know some of the more hardcore fans are very vocal about how Clayman was the last great IF album. Personally, I was along for the ride up until, and beyond Come Clarity. I think that album is under-appreciated and it was also my first IF-album. I think it's a pretty good album. A Sense of Purpose was the album that lost me and the stuff they have out since is not just bad because it's another direction, it's bad because the songs are awful. The band used to write some really great melodic death metal and now they sound like a watered down version of Breaking Benjamin.
I honestly can't think of another band who had a worse decline than In Flames had. Some bands I love have put out sub-par albums and dropped a bit in quality, but the career of In Flames could best be described as a car crashing off the road and diving 50 miles down a cliff. It's a shame. :/

Pretty much this. And I'm loving their later stuff, I think they have found a good sound lately.

I can't disagree with this more.
-
Zantera, you've answered your own question.
They used to write some really good melodic death metal, now they just write great songs.
They left behind the MDM stuff more than a decade ago.
-
I think you can change styles and continue delivering but that's not what In Flames have done IMO. A lot of people give Metallica shit for their decline, but in my opinion albums like Load and ReLoad look like modern masterpieces in comparison to A Sense of Purpose or Sounds of a Playground Fading.
Yeah they have changed styles and whether or not you like the new direction is obviously 100% subjective. I'm not even a big fan of melodic death metal, but I think that's a genre where In Flames really shined when they put out some really strong albums and were one of the pioneers of the genre. Now they have changed into something different, which in my opinion would be a more radio metal sound, and whether or not you like their new sound, I think it's safe to say that they used to be a very influential band that inspired many other bands to make the same kind of music, but it's not like they're relevant at all these days. Again, quality of the music aside, their status has changed. It's kinda similar to how bands like Trivium or KoRn were very hot during a time of their career, but they didn't hit that final homerun and they kinda faded away.
-
Zantera is laying it down as it is. I tend to look In Flames as two separated bands, the second one being born with Reroute to Remain. The second In Flames has had some really good albums like RtR or Come Clarity (Which I think is really underappreciated, mostly because Anders Fridén can't do the same growling vocals anymore and people don't like to accept that). Hell, even some songs of A Sense of Purpose and Soundtrack are really good. But Sounds of a Playground Fading sounded... Uninspired in a lot of parts. I don't think they're going for the Hard Rock audience right now but they're definitely not going for the MDM audience either. I just don't know what are they trying to do with their music right now.

Samples of new songs: https://vk.com/wall-7425815_585744?reply=585783 Anders should consider taking singing lessons... His vocals aren't as whiny as before, but he still has a long way to go if he wants to make clean vocals the main focus of their music (which seems to be happening on the new album). Hell, he needs a backing track for the chorus of Come Clarity live, even though there are no harmonies: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQ9oVfGRJeQ
It feels like they went from being leaders of the melodeath scene to being followers of whatever style of metal is popular in America. STYE includes a lot of nu metalish chugga chugga riffing, CC and ASOP have a bit of metalcore, and I guess the new stuff is aimed at fans of... modern alt rock or something like that? I'm not saying they sold out, but it looks like they've been taking cues from younger bands and altered their music to keep up with the times and find a new audience. Good for them, because obviously they make more money now, and a lot of people seem to be happy with the new direction, but it's not my cup of tea. Come Clarity is a passable album and the rest have a couple of decent songs, but they have little to nothing to do with the In Flames of 90s, especially now that Jesper is gone and there are no members left from the original line-up.
-
Anders can actually sing pretty well, when he wants to.
Proof is in the side project he did in 2003 called Passenger.
IF are in a no win situation, regardless of what style they play.
Had they continued with the MDM style on every single album, people would be bitching that every album was sounding the same.

Not really, because they could have evolved that MDM sound.

Can't say those samples got me too excited for the album. :-\

Wow that is one project I haven't heard in ages. Brought back some flashbacks for me. Despite that it's not a very good album they did, some highlights but for the most part i'm not very fond of Anders contribution to that project but that's just me.

Yeah I always remember the Passenger album being pretty good.
I've dug out the CD and will give it another listen.
Surprisingly, it's not OOP and available at Amazon UK for a decent price.

I think Filtered Truth was really quite good, but Everything Is Gone was pretty ordinary.

Half way through my first listen of Siren Charms. Very melodic and more aggressive than people might think.
Paralyzed......WOW!!!

Paralyzed......WOW!!!
This is great to read.
-
I'm not a fan, but I think it's pretty good. Really like the vocals.
-
The new album is slightly better than I thought it would be but it still has nothing that would make me want to listen to it again. Too radio-friendly and weak vocals, especially the screams.
-
I've listened to the new album a few times, and I guess you can call me an In Flames fanboy, I really enjoy it. It's certainly different, but the songs IMO are still great. I would have liked some more traditional newer In Flames style songs like Rusted Nail, cause I think there is a little too much clean vox from Anders, but I like it.
-
Sorry people, but I think this album isn't any good. I think it's the first In Flames album in history that has actually made me yawn. The riffs do nothing, the vocals and drums are bland to me... I don't know. Maybe I'm not made for this kind of album.
Except "Dead Eyes". It's a pretty great song.
-
Dead Eyes is top 3, terrific song. i can see why people wouldn't dig this album, but I'm loving it.
-
I liked the last album better, but this one is not bad at all!
Filtered Truth was pretty damn catchy.

It should be named an In Flames tour with Trivium as special guests, not the other way around IMO.

Wut? Trivium are way bigger than IF. ???
-
I've seen Trivium open for IF twice, once in 2006 and in 2012.
-
Wut? Trivium are way bigger than IF. ???
Yeah, I guess these days to the masses and mainstream audience, Trivium are a little bigger, but I didn't think so much that In Flames would be bumped to support act.
-
I don't know what things are like in other parts of the world, but in the US at least I think Trivium are way bigger.
-
Yea I was about to say that. I have a feeling IF may be bigger in europe but not in the US.
-
Not in the UK either. Maybe in contintental Europe, but I doubt it.
-
In Sweden IF is definitly bigger than Trivium. :P
-
In Sweden IF is definitly bigger than Trivium. :P
Same here in Finland. When IF and Trivium toured Europe together in 2009, Trivium headlined in the UK while IF closed the rest of the shows: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taste_of_Chaos_2009#Taste_of_Chaos_2009:_Europe
-
In Flames are one of the biggest bands here in Sweden, if not THE biggest.
-
Here in Australia neither are that big at all. :lol Although, come to think of it, Trivium do make the charts with their new albums, not sure if In Flames ever has.
-
I think that it is safe to say that different territories have bands that are more popular than others.
Not sure about AU though, I would have thought that Trivium would be popular, specially with the younger crowd?
Back to the new album, I have to say that I really enjoyed listening to it today.
I had no preconceived ideas about it, weren't worried that IF are not playing MDM anymore and just enjoyed some really good songs.

Siren Charms is one of the worst records i have heard in my life.
About the band, i am a big fan of everything up until Reroute to Remain. Whoracle and Colony are among my favourite albuns ever. Clayman is a classic.
From RtR on, there are hits and misses, IMHO, but never a full good album.
Soundtrack was mediocre, Come Clarity was ok, i like 3 or 4 songs from A Sense of Purpose and 3 or 4 song from Sounds of A Playground. with Siren Charms, they made an albumm that i hate a 100% . :lol
It´s just so...mediocre.

Pretty pointless post right here.
Siren Charms made my top 5 last year.
RTR made my top 50.
IMO Come Clarity is a high quality record.
IMO Playground was a really great metal record too.
IMO Soundtrack and ASOP were slightly below average but still a decent enough listen.
-
RtR and SoaPF are both awesome, two of my favourites.
Come Clarity and Siren Charms are pretty good IMO.
Soundtrack and ASoP I don't find so interesting, but they're alright.
-
Siren Charms grew on me considerably - Paralyzed is such a great song, powerful!
RTR and CC are in my top 3 IF albums (along with Clayman)
I Love Playground, real solid album and Soundtrack was my first IF album so I always have a special place for that one.
ASoP is just a bad album all around.
-
Not sure why a post is pointless because it's a negative post about a band's recent albums.
Personally I discovered In Flames when I was 14-15, and I had a period of maybe 2-3 years where I listened heavily to genres like MeloDeath, Metalcore, Nu-Metal and other "simple" genres that combined harsh vocals with clean parts. In Flames played a big role, and I got into the band through Come Clarity, which I really liked. By the time A Sense of Purpose came out, it really killed the interest I had left. The last two In Flames albums (three counting ASOP) were just garbage IMO, but on the other hand I don't really mourn the loss of In Flames too much, because MeloDeath kinda left my system just as fast as it entered it. I had that period of 2-3 years where I listened to them a lot, but today I feel like MeloDeath is in some sort of dark zone where I have no use for it. It's neither heavy enough to be one of my "go to" metal styles, but also not interesting enough to fall under any other categories for me.
In short, Colony, Whoracle and Clayman remain 3 very spectacular albums for their genre, and they are the 3 big standouts by the band IMO. Jester Race would be a very close nr4, and another great classic. The band went into a slow decline after Clayman, but I still liked Reroute quite a bit, and Soundtrack was quite enjoyable, despite some throwaway songs. Come Clarity was a return to form and their best in a few years. Nothing since then is worth your time, unless In Flames means the world to you.
-

i´m sorry, since english is not my native language, maybe it didn´t came out right
in a nutshell: i really like old In Flames, i kinda of like some stuff post RtR, but i hated Siren Charms, and was kinda surprised that so many people here liked the album. But of course i respect everybody´s opinion :D
Sorry for any misunderstanding!

Nah, it wasn't really you man, it was more me being a dick I think.
I really love the old In Flames too. They were the first death metal band along with Soilwork that got me into harsh vocals and that style of music. The old stuff still is absolute classic and always will be.
Saying that, I love the new style too. I was also surprised at everyone else's reaction to Siren Charms on here too. I think I can just accept the new In Flames and am open to what they are doing. I can see though why people don't really like it though,
-

I like In Flames, but it was kind of a casual like. Paralyzed definitely drew my attention when I heard it. Very strong hook.

Still a really solid album.

https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/general_music_news/drummer_daniel_svensson_has_quit_in_flames.html
-
I read that the other day and I think it's a huge loss. Daniel's drums were a key part to the sound of the band and will be tough to replace IMO.
-
What a huge blow....he was the most important drummer of their career for sure. Gonna miss him!
-
Just like Opeth, In Flames re-joins Nuclear Blast. What if both bands decides to also re-join their past sound!? :omg: :P
Nuclear Blast proudly announce the signing of Swedish metal icons In Flames for the world ex-North America and Scandinavia.
"In a way, IN FLAMES and Nuclear Blast share a similar story," said IN FLAMES vocalist Anders Fridén. "Both started in a garage in Europe, both love metal and both have grown a lot bigger over the years. For these reasons, it seemed a natural fit to come back to the place it all started."
-
Knowing that A Sense of Purpose came out through NB, I highly doubt it. :P
-
Yea there's also that. :lol So yea we'll see.
-
I liked Siren Charms and have been a big fan of their post RTR output. I'm looking forward to a new album.

New song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yafxUluB6DA&feature=youtu.be (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yafxUluB6DA&feature=youtu.be)
They kept on the same direction taken on Siren Charms, sadly (for me). I love everything they did until RTR, and some of the stuff that came after, but they lost me with this new(er) direction.
-
Pretty good..
For me, this actually sounds better than anything from the last album. Well maybe except Rusted Nail or Filtered Truth

I'd probably agree. I liked Siren Charms but it wasn't one of their strongest. They seem to alternate with each album, so maybe this'll be another strong one!

Nothing new here, but I've liked pretty much everything they've done, so I'm really looking foward to this one. Definitely sounds like something from Siren Charms to me though.
-
Another new song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvWJIPh0J6U (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvWJIPh0J6U)
I actually liked 'The End', it sounded a bit like A Sense of Purpose and the better parts of SOAPF. Not a fan of 'The Truth' though.
-
Even worse :( :( :(
-
This band has definitely changed, but I thought that song was okay too.
-
Bloody awful, what are they thinking with this direction?
I lasted all of 43 seconds, that was enough.
I won't be buying anything new from them again.

What a strange question. :lol
Anyway I'm digging these new songs.

Anders clean singing has really improved too.
Looing forward to the DVD also.

Anders clean singing has really improved too.
Well, live his clean vocals are shite. And there's a lot of autotune on that new track.
-
Another one down, leaving only Anders and Bjorn from the classic lineup. :(

-
It really is the Anders + Björn show now :-\ Oh well, I'm curious about the project that Peter said he's got with Jesper.
I feel like IF hit the rock bottom with Battles: they resorted to outside songwriters (https://www.discogs.com/In-Flames-Battles/release/9339034), Anders sounds more autotuned than ever, the choruses are repetitive, the drums are robotic and Björn abuses wah more than Kirk Hammett FFS. :puke: I actually thought The End was a surprisingly good lead single, but there are only 2 or 3 decent songs besides that one. Well, at least Battles has made me revisit some of their previous albums and realize that they were not that bad in comparison - Come Clarity is actually pretty solid with just a few filler tracks (once you get past Anders' clean vocals :P), and ASOP has got a bunch of pretty good moments.

Damn.
Battles for me is pretty okay, but it's pretty scary to see where this band is going, even coming from me who is a big post RTR era fan. This new album makes albums like ASOP and Playground sound fucking dark and heavy,

Completely agree. If Jesper and Peter get Daniel to join them, all the old school IF fans are gonna migrate over to them, and I wouldn't blame them in the slightest.
I liked the new IF era, but like you said, Battles struck a nerve. It is rock bottom for sure!
-
I am typically a person that likes or even prefers the more modern material of bands that made some switches (Blind Guardian, Opeth, Muse, Sonata Arctica, Dream Theater, Nightwish etc. etc.). But by the gods does In Flames suck balls these days. I think the new album is really bad.

All of this exactly.
-
I dig the new album, precisely because they're doing something a bit different. Far from one of my favourites, but I like it for what it is which is pretty unique.
-
Battles had it's moments, but there was just huge amounts of filler and forgettable songs. The album just crumbles under it's own weight. I like their post RtR material a lot, but it seems that creatively the have hit a concrete wall.
Iwers leaving could be a sign, that there is also some internal conflict within the band..

I think this too.

His statement didn't say much and they're in the middle of a tour, so you might be onto something. But realistically thinking, there are probably a lot of reasons, like wanting to spend more time with his family, and he also joined Daniel's beer business recently: https://www.rockbladet.se/2016/09/in-flames-former-drummer-daniel-svensson-and-bass-player-peter-iwers-are-reunited-now-as-master-brewers/

Agreed.
-
They should just call it quits. Battles is awful. Now another classic member leaves. Take a hint.
-
Would be interesting to know the sales of the new album compared to previous stuff.
-
Battles was so frustrating because for like 2 seconds I'd hear something that would make me go "oh wow wait it really is In Flames!" and then it would turn into weak, sad alt metal. I really wanted to not hate it
-
Would be interesting to know the sales of the new album compared to previous stuff.
I could only find the US first week sales, but looks like they've been declining for the past 10 years:
https://www.blabbermouth.net/news/in-flames-siren-charms-cracks-u-s-top-30/
https://www.metalinsider.net/columns/metal-by-numbers/metal-by-numbers-1123-animals-lead-the-madness
Come Clarity: 24,000
A Sense of Purpose: 20,000
SOAPF: 14,000
Siren Charms: 9,000
Battles: 8,650
I remember reading that both STYE and CC cracked the 100K mark in America, and in Sweden ASOP and SOAPF went gold. Apparently 2004-2011 was their commercial heyday, so I wouldn't be surprised if Daniel and Peter thought being in IF wasn't worth the sacrifice of going out on the road for most of the year anymore.
-
Some big drops there, but times are changing. Only 350 less than Siren Charms I don't think is too bad is it? Saying that, I don't follow sales with any bands at all though.
-
Those numbers make sense, although Playground should've been higher than ASOP, cuz I think Deliver Us was a bigger hit than anything from ASOP
-
Playground is just a better album than ASOP in every way.
-
Playground is just a better album than ASOP in every way.
Oh, definitely! Is that even a question? Lol
-
Playground I hoped was the album that was turning their direction around a little, and then Siren Charms obviously crushed that, even though I quite liked that one.
-

I bet the more or less 9,000 American first-week buyers they've still got are the diehards who faithfully buy anything they put out, while others have been alienated by the changing sound or just lost their interest. Obviously albums aren't sold as much anymore, but on the other hand streaming is counted in the sales, and even a band like Opeth that has also gone through a polarizing change of sound hasn't lost as many album buyers. If we use Google Trends as a measure of interest in IF (like some have done in the DT side), it's pretty clear that Come Clarity was the peak of their visibility: https://www.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=%22in%20flames%22
Playground is just a better album than ASOP in every way.
Oh, definitely! Is that even a question? Lol
It's been ages since I listened to SOAPF, but I do remember there being a few more tracks that stood out positively than on ASOP and that the album sounded more inspired, probably because they had something to prove after Jesper's departure.
-
That decline in that graph is sad.
-
Just listened to Battles for the first time. I actually like the album quite a bit. I understand it's not In Flames of old, but it's still a solid album. Still won't be enough to get me to pay to see them live again (they burned that bridge), but it's better than Siren Charms in my opinion.
-
After reading through this thread a little, I may get lambasted for my Battles comment lol

Nah, I don't mind it either. I need to go back and spin it again though, it does have some good songs.

CYHRA feat. Peter Iwers and Jesper Strömblad (Ex-In Flames) (https://open.spotify.com/album/5BK7OiqhUcmGV9zzVB0mQV)
0:12 sounds straight out of Colony, pretty good stuff. Sounds like old-school In Flames in some ways.
-
Cool song - not groundbreaking, but quality pop metal and I'm liking it :tup IMO this is the direction IF should've gone in, with more synths and (in this case only) clean vocals while keeping those glorious Colony/Clayman guitars.
-
Youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=627ybk8Aql0
The official video will be coming in a month. I love it - so much in common with the Colony and Clayman sound, but with clean melodic vocals.
I stopped caring about In Flames after Reroute to Remain, so this is a very welcome sound! I'm also happy to see Jesper writing again. I really loved The Resistance, but they booted him due to his issues and then the band folded up.
-
Fuck, Jesper really was the key to In Flames' old sound. The Ex-Amaranthe singer sounds good but that song is begging for some sweet Clayman-like growls, man.
Like, I imagine it with 2000's Anders and it would pretty much would sound out of Colony/Clayman. I still love it tho
-
Wouldn't mind no harsh vocals on the album, which I assume is the case but at the same time, this combined with harsh vocals is pretty much In Flames early 2000 edition. THAT, I wouldn't mind one bit. :)
Jesper sure had a big part of the early In Flames sound both in terms of riffs and melodies.
-
Liked the riffs (pure Jesper), but hated the vocals. Kinda ruined the song for me. The production is to clean, also.
-

I'm with you mate. Great music, but needs growls, vocals are terrible and it sounds like pure pop.

That was the point of Amaranthe - taking pop vocals and melodies over melodic death metal. Jake quit Amaranthe since they were getting away from that formula and moving towards more pop metal and more of Elyze's vocals. So Jake started this band to go back to what he felt Amranthe should sound like - and he enlisted two big name melodic death metal musicians in Jesper and Peter to do it.
I wasn't expecting anything different than this. I'd love some growls, since it would bring it closer to In Flames, but I'll take this over what Amranthe is doing now.

Pretty much. The song would be miles better with Growls, but it's already better than what both Amaranthe and In Flames have released recently

Jake quit Amaranthe - he was tired of being phased out in favor of Elize and the music moving towards a poppier sound. So he went back to the original formula - melodic death metal styled music with clean/poppy vocals. And he recruited Jesper and Peter Iwers, so he's got the talent and the real sound of that style of music backing him.

I'm really digging what I'm hearing. The first thing that grabbed when I listened to "Karma" was Jesper's riffs, it was nice to hear his style again. But the more I listen to both songs, the more I like them as a whole. I'm also getting used to the vocals.
I really looking forward to the album!
-
Had a listen to Cyhras album today and it's nothing groundbreaking which I don't think anyone expected.
There's some good songs though, right now i'm diggin Heartrage alot.

Just sampled some of the Cyhra songs on Youtube and there's nothing as good as Karma, so I probably won't be buying it. Maybe just that one track if I feel like buying it.
Props to them for creating a new band, but based on Jake's original statement when he left Amaranthe, I was expecting a heavy album, and this isn't it. It really sounds like Amaranthe-lite. Jesper seems like he was really held back on the songs I heard.
-
Yeah, despite some good Jesper riffs, this band is not for me, sadly. But it's better than the current In Flames, which is even sadder. :|
-
After some more spinns, a few songs stand out:
Karma
Heartrage
Closure
Letter to Myself
Here to save you
-
While Karma sounds more like an In Flames song, the rest of the songs are very Amaranthe-like. Although is not In Flames-related here's an opinion: I can understand why Jake was given less attention on Amaranthe. It's not like he's a bad singer- It's just that his voice type and technique are far too similar to that of Elyze Ryd's. You can see that on "Here to Save You": you could almost say Elyze is singing there too. There's nothing much that can make him stand out in a band with there, sadly.
I kinda wish this album was more Jesper-driven than Amaranthe-driven, but it is what it is
Also, In Flames has released a covers EP
(https://www.fotoconciertos.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/in_flames_Down_Wicked_No_Good.jpg)
It has Depeche Mode's "It's No Good", Alice in Chains' "Down in a Hole", Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" and NIN/Johnny Cash's "Hurt".
I don't really know what to think of this. It doesn't really sound like In Flames even if they're covers and I really, really don't like Anders' voice on melodic-driven songs. The voice correction is obvious on Down in a Hole.
-
I like the song selection, but damn, this is bad. ANDERS. CANNOT. SING.
What he did to Down In A Hole... >:(
-
What's the point of this EP? I've defended these guys for so long, but it's getting harder and harder.
-
Spinning Colony and Clayman and remembering the old days when I first discovered In Flames and Melodic Death Metal in general. Good times!
-

Epic bump. Yeah I do that quite often. Jester Race for me. One of the first albums that got me into the genre, still just as good today.
-
The run from Jester Race to CLayman is just perfect. I miss this band...
-
Listening to that EP from a while back, is there anyone on this whole damn planet that even remotely considers Anders' clean singing to resemble anything sounding decent, let alone pleasant? Aside from the band members obviously.
And yes, I frequently revisit some of their classic stuff and, hell, there are a couple of post-Clayman songs I dig.
-
I love everything up to Come Clarity. I think Clayman, Reroute and CC are my 3 favs.
RIP In Flames
-
I love almost everything up to "Sounds Of A Playground Fading", I loved their early style and really enjoy their newer style aswell, but I lost them in the last two albums.

I really dig his clean vocals! I think they fit what’s going on in the music perfectly.
Granted, I’m not a huge fan. I went gaga over Reroute and subsequently obtained Clayman, Whoracle, and Soundtrack to Your Escape. I like them all, but so far none of them have grabbed me nearly as much as Reroute did.
-

I thought Siren Charms was pretty decent, but I think they finally lost me with Battles.

His Clean vocals worked in a certain type of song. I loved them in Satellites and Astronauts, My Sweet Shadow, Dawn of a New Day, Evil in a Closet, even the Chosen Pessimist. But all those songs have a tone and a mood that makes Anders' vocals stand out. It's the instrumentals that make it work. In my opinion it happens when the melody of the song is focused on the guitars and not on the vocals. Put Anders' voice in a voice melody-driven song like Hurt or Wicked Game and it's gonna be really bad.

I don't mind his clean vocals on Reroute or the few spots on the earlier albums because he wasn't trying too hard yet, but yeah - he's not a good singer, and that version of Hurt hurts my ears (pun intended). But where most vocalists who aren't that great technically are smart enough to write vocal lines that remain within their abilities, Anders started oversinging and his voice became more and more of a focal point in IF's music, even though it's painfully obvious that he can't pull it off live.
-
Wow so yea their new single is really good!
-
I've listened to two new songs and both are prett good. One was better than the other though.
-

Was I, the Mask one of them?
I actually didn't know about the other singles at all. I Am Above was pretty cool but I really digged I, the Mask.
-
The title track was decent but This Is Our House wasn’t sadly.
-
Just listened to I, The Mask, very very good.
The title track was decent but This Is Our House wasn’t sadly.
It's the weakest of the 3, but I still thought it was okay.
-
Just heard 'I, The Mask'. This one is very much in the vein of ASoP or even Come Clarity. Loved it! Heck I think this might be the best song they've released in 10 years, or at least among the best of them. Really liked I am Above, too.
-
Had some more listen to I Am Above and I most say I really dig Anders clean vocals in the pre-chorus, really catchy stuff. The only thing missing is more guitar melodies ala Jesper Strömblad to get that classic In Flames sound.
-
Spinning Colony and Clayman and remembering the old days when I first discovered In Flames and Melodic Death Metal in general. Good times!
Epic bump. Yeah I do that quite often. Jester Race for me. One of the first albums that got me into the genre, still just as good today.
A bit late response but yea I did some throwback and listened to The Jester Race and while I enjoy the new songs goshdarnit they're abysmal compared to that era. :lol
-
Don't know anything about these guys, but since they are opening for Within Temptation, felt I should check them out.
My ears regret that decision.
-
The title track was decent but This Is Our House wasn’t sadly.
After the last album I thought "surely they can't get any worse than this, right?", and then they put out This is Our House... :puke:
On the positive side, I Am Above is a decent tune, but it seems that it and the title-track are among the few songs with screaming on the album: https://www.reddit.com/r/InFlames/comments/aisj8w/i_just_listened_to_the_entire_new_album_i_the/

In Flames - December Flower live 1996 (https://youtu.be/MOTSVc0mtVw)
Such an awesome song on the album but why oh why did I search for a live version?? The band sounds good but Anders sounds like a castrated pig. :rollin

Not bad.
-
Fucking good song this;

-
Haven't listened to this band for a few years, but the hype of the new album got to me.
Listening to it on Spotify, sounds pretty good, but more like Anders 'Passenger' side project in many places.
-
I picked this album up and have just had a listen to it. With all the signs pointing towards the band going back to a bit more of a heavier style, it's kind of not. Well, there's some brilliant killer later In Flames style tracks here which is refreshing but it reminds me a lot of Battles also. It's really just a continuation of what they did with Battles but some ASOP or Playground influence. Maybe I expected too much heavier stuff from what was released but nevertheless, I've been a fan of all their later stuff so I still love hearing new In Flames. Having some heavier ASOP sounding stuff is just a bonus.
Anders can really sing quite well now, good for him.
-
Oddly enough, during my album marathon run of listening to In Flames in preparation of their show with Within Temptation, their 90s material was pretty much a blur to me and I find myself enjoying the 10s material more and I liked Battles the most of the bunch. Have yet to listen to I, The Mask but if it's something similar to Battles, I can enjoy it easily.
-
This band was never really my cup of tea but saw them open for Within Temptation, still not so, but one thing I always liked was their guitaring, the harmony and melody of thier music was always something I enjoyed. They were solid live. Anyway, I thought this song was solid

Screw me  I just saw it posted on FB from a friend and I thought it was a new one :D
-
:lol No worries.
It's a solid song and a weird but kinda cool video, especially as a Mr Robot fan.
-
I initially thought I, The Mask was a bit of a bounce back from the previous one, but I tried it again the other day and I'm just not feeling it at all. It could be my least favourite album from them. Well between that and Battles. Even Siren Charms I thought was quite good.
-
Can't post the link but there is a youtube video which is a trailer for Clayman which the band seems to have re-recorded. I don't know how I feel about that.
-
I... what? If any IF album doesn't need to be re-recorded, it's Clayman!
-
I... what? If any IF album doesn't need to be re-recorded, it's Clayman!
Yeah.....I know.
I don't understand. I don't think any of their old stuff has ever needed re-recording.

-
👎👎
-
The only thing I hope about this is that it inspires the band to go back to this style once again for the next album.
-
Sometimes I like this, but Clayman is like one of their most polished, great albums and they don't have a different singer or other instruments/elements to add. I am confused.
-
If it was, like, a sequel that had a load of reprises or something, I'd be down with that, but a remake of the same album is just weird.
-
I mean honestly, as much as I find this unecessary and a bit weird I do love Clayman alot so if it turns out great, then great I guess. However I kind of feel bad for previous members that was apart of the band during that era. That's their legacy with the band they're re-recording.

I'd be interested to hear what Jesper thinks of this.

Almost makes you wonder if maybe that's part of the motivation?
-
Imo if you enjoy the OG Clayman I think it's better to avoid the new EP, the new production is so weak and flat. However I really liked the new instrumental track!
-
I gave it a spin. The re-recorded songs have all of the life sucked out of them and there's no power in the guitars at all. The vocals are nothing like the originals.
It's cool that they're acknowledging the anniversary of Clayman, but there is zero point to this if they're going to make the songs just sound like current In Flames.
-
Yeah, quite an embarrassment overall I'd say. A completely unnecessary nostalgia venture just to seemingly cash in on their prior success. This album was fantastic as it was.
Other artists re-release albums with remasters, not re-recordings. That would've been the smarter move here.
-
I heard the Clayman re-record and that was enough for me. Dount I'll even check it out, and that's coming from someone who likes In Flames now.
-
Am I the only one who's taking this as "Well, Jesper's not here to make any of his trademark riffs and we haven't really been able to replicate them for a full album since then, so how about we just re-record Clayman?"
Honestly, this is really, REALLY Unnecessary. I liked ITM and I think it was a step in the right direction, but this is just pointless
-
The only good thing from the EP is Anders' clean vocals in the chorus sound way better. Other than, I don't see any reason why they would record.
The Drums and Guitars don't have that hard hitting impact compared to the originals. I did a side by side and noticed a very big difference, not for the better.
-
It was not a bad listen, because the original material is so great. I do kinda like this version of pinball map though.
There are a lot of examples of rerecordings I like, so I don't think they are useless. But this EP just seems poorly conceived overall.

Five former members of the Swedish metal band IN FLAMES — Jesper Strömblad (guitar), Daniel Svensson (drums), Peter Iwers (bass), Niclas Engelin (guitar) and Mikael Stanne (vocals) — have launched a new project called THE HALO EFFECT. So far, only a promotional photo of the new outfit has been released, with the promise of more information to follow soon.
Don't wanna get my hopes up too much but it does sound interesting.
-
If those guys still got it, this could be great. I’m interested to see what they come up with!
-
Considering how quickly Jesper and Peter left Cyhra, ive got little faith this band will do much besides release an album even if it is good.
-
Swedes put together projects like this all the time, so I wouldn't expect a long-standing band to form out of it either. Just a quality album that sounds like a lost In Flames/Dark Tranquillity jam session from '99 would be cool. Other guys do this frequently with the chainsaw Swedeath style, but for some reason not so much for the more melodic side.
-
I'm looking forward to it....that is a killer lineup!
-
Yeah, the lineup looks good. Hopefully a quality album eventuates.
-
I think the most exciting part is seeing Daniel back in action and I always enjoyed Stannes voice so this will be fun I think.
-
I wish I was in Europe because Machine Head is doing an Arena tour with Amon Amarth.
The Halo Effect is opening.
-
I am really interested to hear this. 90's In Flames is really awesome stuff. I can enjoy some of In Flames' newer stuff, but the run up to Clayman is just incredible. Stanne is a great frontman, and I am curious the direction this band will go. The release hints at the early In Flames sound, but we shall see...

Yeah, I like it too :metal

It's better than most of what In Flames has done in the past couple decades, but I think they can do better. It's kind of like a Dark Tranquillity b-side.

Yeah, that was good! This has a lot of potential, with all the talent involved.
I had no idea In Flames gave the boot to Niclas Engelin. ???
This is more In Flames than the current lineup of that band, considering all the members involved
-
It's better than most of what In Flames has done in the past couple decades, but I think they can do better. It's kind of like a Dark Tranquillity b-side.
This seems pretty accurate. I didn't mind it though.
-
Yeah, it didn't do much for me. Sounds like a current DT b-side. I kinda hate the production as well. Still gonna check the album, but now my hopes are really low.
-
Yea I agree this sounds more like DT than early IF. I wonder if Stanne wrote it?
As much as I love early In Flames I would rather them doing something kinda diffrent than trying to relive their past. Sure deep down I woudln't mind it too much though.
-
I don't know, In Flames has been "doing something kinda different" for a couple decades now. The more proper Swedeath bands have been churning out tribute albums to the buzzsaw releases for quite some time now, but proper 90s melodeath has pretty much been dormant for a long time now. I wouldn't mind a revival of it as long as the quality level is high. If you want something "different" there's a million newer bands exploring all kinds of proggy, techy, dissonant, and other more avant-garde stuff. It's rare for guys pushing 50 to produce quality innovative work anyway.
-
Check Dungeon Serpent - World Of Sorrows, sounds like (really) early melodeath, and it's one of my favorite releases of 2021.
-
I actually quite liked that one, it might have even been in my tentative top 30 or so of metal albums this year. But I don't remember it being especially melodic, maybe more in the Dismember Massive Killing Capacity sense if anything. It's definitely on my list to revisit again though. My template track is In Flames' "Man Made God", which is perfection.

I want to like them, but they're not doing anything for me yet. Hopefully the rest of the album will connect better.

I really liked this.
-
I really like the description of the song:
"The song is basically about how it felt growing up and discovering extreme metal in our late teens. Delving into something that was both frightening and alluring at the same time. And having that as the sole focus as you started playing in a band and in essence decided who you wanted to be. That confidence and laser focus is what still fascinates me I love that this somehow endured over the years. This is basically us at 19 screaming "How don't you understand this?". And even if people around us didn't get it at the time at least they could see our passion for it and that's what this song is about."
-
Maybe we need to just create a Halo Effect thread, but here is another new track from the In-Flames offshoot band. This is good!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDR52-9Zns4
-
Forgot about this, the latest two tracks are excellent!
-
I wasn't crazy about the first two, but this one is definitely closer to what I'm looking to get out of them.
-
Yeah sounds great album drops in August.... :metal
-
Yea, another great song. This album is shaping up!
-
This song is better, but I kinda hate the production (standard Nuclear Blast release sound).
-
This song is better, but I kinda hate the production (standard Nuclear Blast release sound).
That's probably my main complaint. It's just the standard anodyne metal production style, competent, but unexciting. Part of what made Colony and Clayman so iconic was the massive, punchy, crushing production, arguably the peak of the Studio Fredman sound where Frederik Nordstrom had struck gold. If they can't recreate that, I'd like to hear this album in more of an Amorphis production style, they're probably the best lately at getting a slick, polished approach to consistently sound good.

Totally. I love that! Come Clarity was the first In Flames album I ever bought. The drumming in this new song is Take This Life 2.0.
Anders actually sounds good on this. What fucking year is it?
-
Come Clarity is just excellent. Nice comparison with Take This Life.
-
This might be a stretch but maybe the Halo Effect writing and releasing solid music has caused In Flames to up their game? Doesn't hurt either way. Interested to hear the official track.

Easily the best In Flames release in a decade. I'd basically written these guys off, but I'm intrigued about this new album now.

In Flames also just announced a US headlining tour. Sadly, it's the same date as another concert for me. I would have otherwise gone.

Right there with you. I'd lost all hope of them ever putting out anything decent again.
-
I'm not getting my hopes up too much. There is always at least a decent song or two and moments in others on their more recent albums, so I'm not holding my breath until I hear a full album of songs like this one. But it is an improvement over their worst tendencies, and they have enough vocal layering going on to mask Davis' lack of singing ability. It would be frustratingly ironic if the singles are by far the best tracks from The Halo Effect with a weak full album and In Flames somehow churned out a better release than them.
Edit: I caught the Floydian slip, and I'm just going to leave it because it's too accurate. :rollin
-
Lol I remember getting really excited about I, the mask and then I heard the whole album..... :lol
This sounds so much like the In Flames I used too love, hopefully they have more songs in the same vain on the album.
-
Lol I remember getting really excited about I, the mask and then I heard the whole album..... :lol
This is a good point, the couple of singles they released were promising as hell, but the whole album ended up weaker than Battles.
-
The new song certainly was a surprise!
...although, if I'm thinking of a comparison, I would definitely go for Slaughter of the Soul-era At the Gates. The main riff and the relentless drumming totally sound like Blinded by Fear! Chorus is way more melodic, though.
Good stuff...this makes me curious...
-
Really enjoying this new one! Hopefully it's not like the last couple of albums where the first single was okay and the album was mostly meh. I saw them about a month ago, and Anders' growls sounded great. Check out the set from the Nova Rock Festival a few days ago on Youtube. Anders sounds solid there as well, and the band sound great. Hopefully they will let Chris Broderick rip a few on the new album. He and Bjorn with some trade-off leads would be excellent too.
-

It's not like In Flames is new to that sound though. ATG leaned into it more, but the pedaltone riffs with thrashy drumming are all over The Jester Race, which came out just three months after Slaughter of the Soul.

Yeah, there are certainly common roots, although I think Slaughter of the Soul really was the one characterized by that straightforward, thrashy approach. I love SotS to pieces, but most songs have that kind of tempo, and a ton of those riffs (as you mentioned) which, incidentally, would influence SO many bands over the years...they did it first, though :) Plus they had Tompa, and they were able to work just the right amount of melancholy in the fury, which made that album so very special.
The Jester Race surely has songs along those lines (e.g. Graveland), but overall it has much more emphasis on harmonized leads and "folkier" melodies. It is a much more varied and colorful album - and less aggressive, I think. Both amazing albums, though, which is really what matters ;D
The new song, to me, truly has that Blinded by Fear feel, when it gets going. I haven't followed In Flames all that much over the last few years but, yeah, this sounds like a departure from the songs I have heard, at least.
-
Yeah, I do prefer TJR, but SotS is kind of like the Reign in Blood of melodeath (although even then it has "Into the Dead Sky" and "The Flames of the End" as a breather and coda).
-
TJR >>> SOTS.
No competition in my book.
-

Absolutely! That's the perfect description for it (I've used it myself ;))

All the great pro shot live footage on YT from this year festival circuit, they have a live keyboard player on stage.
Not sure if I've ever noticed it before or maybe it's a new thing?

Another killer new song 'The Great Deceiver'

Wow, that was fresh! Great song.

They can say it hasn't but I 100% think it has. Which is a good thing! It's good to see IF can still write good songs.
-
I don't know if The Halo Effect has kicked their arses to be more like In Flames. :lol
This is Colony stuff! :metal
This is still missing that massive Colony guitar tone and production, but it's easily the best thing I've heard from them in well over a decade, possibly two. The main thing The Halo Effect has over In Flames is Stanne, there's absolutely no way Friden can compete with that. But if Stromblad, Engelin, and Svensson aren't giving it their all and the two In Flames tracks so far are at all portent of the overall release, this could be the upset of the year. I still highly doubt that, I can't imagine Anders going an entire album now without showcasing his croaking and whiny cleans, but the score is way closer than I'd have expected based on the singles released so far.
-
Bottom line for me is, we potentially have two great albums coming out and I couldn't care less
where IF 'retro' sound came from as long as top quality :metal
-
This is Colony stuff! :metal
Easy there tiger.
-
Really enjoy both of the new tracks, and that has me pretty optimistic for the new album!
-
Yeah, I dig the new tracks. Welcome surprise.
-
WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT INTRO. Is that Colony I'm hearing in the first seconds of the song? And the rest of the song sounds absolutely amazing as well! Honestly didn't think they could go back to their heavier sound. This sounds great!
-
Yeah, I dig the new tracks. Welcome surprise.
Yeah, both of them were pretty good! Too early to declare this as the return to form, since there have been a couple of good tracks, on each the latest In Flames records.
But so far, this is promising.

I'm not hearing this Colony influence as much as others.

Yeah, I agree with this. I, The Mask had the title track as one of the first tracks released and it got me insanely hyped. The rest of the album was pretty good too, but I kind of expected something more like that song. Heck I even liked "The End" and got a little bit hopeful before they came up whatever Battles was.
But so far it sounds really good.
-
For me, I, The Mask could be their worst album. The couple of singles were decent but they were so misleading. I'm a fan of their whole career but that album sucked.
-
I thought it was a slight step up from the previous two. I don't remember liking anything on Siren Charms to speak of other than maybe "When the World Explodes", mainly because of Emilia. There are always some cool guitar parts on their later albums, but the vocals bring everything down.

Nothing is worse than Battles for me. Jesus what a turd of an album and that was the one that made me stop immediately buying each album on release day.
-
Hmmm.....yeah true, Battles was atrocious. Siren Charms I liked. Something about it, but I can see why people hated it.
-
For the life of me I've never been able to figure out exactly why, but Anders' Passenger side project is way more fun to listen to than most In Flames albums in the past two decades.
-
Man, imagine a tour with Dark Tranquillity, In Flames and The Halo Effect. They could just swap members to the left and right. :lol
-
Although Stanne is the only shared member at present between any of the three, and incidentally the only one to be in all three at one point or another.

New single, Foregone Pt. 1.

Also new album Foregone, to be released February 10th.

I mean 3 solid singles so far makes this album a bit more interesting than previous albums. :tup
-
Hmmm...the singles are promising but that cover reeks of the last couple of albums. Just a bad vibe from the cover. :lol
-
Another good one! Color me surprised...
To me, it's not just a matter of being more aggressive or "old-school"...these songs feel pretty inspired, with good riffs, melodies and solos.
Good for them (and for us :))!
-
I love that album cover (imagine if the old logo was on that cover though), and the 3 singles are great. February 2023 can't get here soon enough guys!
-
Love Broderick getting a solo in that new single too.

The old logo has no bearing on the music, which is the most important thing, even the cover itself, not fussed as long as the album is killer.
-
4 good singles so far, looking forward to this album I am. Hopefully they have more tracks on the album that's equally interesting.
Btw I just stumbled upon IF live from 96 and Anders voice sounds like a screechy teen compared to what he sounds on the album. :lol
In Flames - December Flower live (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1dqyzO08Tw&ab_channel=inflamesmetalll)
-
What's even harder to watch for me is that they cut out the iconic Frederik Johansson solo on it, that really made the song. I don't know if Bjorn has the chops to play it even now (though I'm sure Broderick does), but certainly not then, much less Jesper or Glenn. They were kind of curious in being one of the best, yet least virtuosic bands, like Opeth in those days.
-
Another strong single, Meet Your Maker. Still can't believe how promising this album is looking.

That one definitely has some Reroute vibes to my ears. Not bad at all.
-
Not that it matters that much because all the singles has been top quality including this one but I do feel this is the weakest imo.
-
It's definitely a step up from a lot of the material on the last few albums. I still don't like Anders' vocals, and the production remains a bit sterile, particularly on the guitars. They said that The Halo Effect forming had no influence on the direction of this album, which to me seems more and more like a blatant lie with each new track. I'm still not used to them having such a technically capable guitarist in Broderick. I had to go through the same process with Akesson in Opeth and Eriksson and Ojersson in Katatonia.
-
I like this one too. I just keep getting more and more excited for this album to finally drop.
-

I actually thought the last one was the weakest, the more ballad Moonshield sounding one. Even though it had that old Jester rip off kind of thing going, that was just something that could have been on the last couple of albums.

I thought this new song was nice but the Broderick solo just sounded........wrong. I'm happy to get used to it though but it stopped sounding like In Flames as soon as he started soloing. That's just initial impressions though from one listen so it may change.
-
Okay, so I'm a listen in, and I'm digging the stuff we haven't heard yet. I have been hearing the best stuff on the album is the stuff that has already been released. I kinda agree with that, but most of the other stuff is good too. Love that they opened with an intro piece in The Beginning of All Things as well. Pure Light of Mind is the only track I'm not really digging on the first go. It's a ballad, and I'm not into Anders' vocals on it that much. It's okay though...
Overall, I really like Foregone.
-
I like the album too - I stopped listening to the band after Reroute to Remain. This won't make my best of 2023 list, but I'm happy hearing some return to that older style that I love.
-
Absolutely loving the new album.
-
I thought the days of me enjoying a new In Flames album were long behind me. Two listens down (and multiple listens to the singles on the run up) and I'm really enjoying this!
-
Yep, this is quite enjoyable...on its own merits, really. Meaning, it doesn't sound to me it's so much of a return to their early roots (except perhaps a few more aggressive and faster-paced songs), rather a return to form, where the songs are just better to my ears. More interesting and dynamic, overall.
Although, to be fair, I didn't follow much of they've been doing since, um, A Sense of Purpose, I think.
To me the Subterranean/The Jester Race combo is truly iconic, just all-around unbelievably good stuff that brings back great memories. Whoracle, in an "objective" sense, is a record that's very much in line with the style on The Jester Race and it's fantastic, although it's not quite as iconic in my book. Then Colony was excellent too, just a tad less inspired (imo). Same with Clayman - I actually appreciated how they were starting to expand their sound palette a bit.
Reroute to Remain is an interesting case - I LOVED it when it came out. The attempts to "modernize" the songwriting (and the sound) were obvious, but I really enjoyed it. However, with more recent revisits, I felt it didn't age super-well. Or maybe it's me that aged ;D I still like it, but not as much. Soundtrack to my Escape, on the other hand, truly disappointed me at the time. Largely fell flat. As for Come Clarity...I know it's pretty widely appreciated (here on the DTF too, I think), and was welcomed as a return to form upon release...but while I think it's a good record, I never really connected with it. In fact, like I said before, it sort of coincided with the time when I stopped closely following the band's music.
Most of the stuff I came across from the records following CC didn't interest me enough to explore more...I'm pretty sure I've listened to the albums here and there, but not more than that.
Glad that Foregone reignited some of that interest :)
-
Wow, I'm pleasantly surprised. This is definitely the best In Flames album since...I'm not sure, but well over a decade. I had no urge at all to revisit the last five after first hearing them, but I'll probably give this multiple listens. It's still nowhere near their best sequence of albums, but in parts it does go back to some of their better traits, and avoids some of their worst. Friden is still not a good vocalist, but he's processed enough in parts that he's not always as obnoxious as he'd become.
-
Finally got around to listening to the album, and....wow. Maybe I need to review their catalogue again, but I can't think of a better album from the swedes. Stellar guitar work, melodic rhythms, and hooks being thrown around like a 12-round heavyweight boxing match. I think Anders' vocals are good. Better than the last 4 or 5 releases, that's for sure. Still won't pay to see them live again, but I'll spin this record a whole bunch this year, I reckon.
-
Revisited Battles. I like it.
-
I'll get around to this new one eventually. Great to hear such great positivity again for these guys.

It really kicks ass Kade! . Has a lot of energy,! Great songwriting.

Just throw it on the Air Pods during your next run, and let it carry you to some PRs
-
I can't stop spinning this! Early album of the year contender, and I'd be very surprised if it doesn't make my top 10 of the year. It's a real return to form, and just a pleasure to listen to.
I think it's particularly front loaded, as the run of State of Slow Decay to Foregone Pt. 2 is really good.
They have written some really solid choruses this time around, especially Bleeding Out, and I love many of the vocal hooks.

Not a bad idea actually! I need to ad some more tunes on my phone. :metal

Revisited Battles. I like it.
I gave this one a listen last night, and I just cannot get into it. It had been awhile since I had given it a spin. There are a few of decent songs, but I prefer I, the Mask to Battles. That said, those are the bottom 2 albums in their catalog for me.
I really am into Foregone though. For me, it is their best since A Sense of Purpose. I've always thought Bjorn was a great riff writer and underrated guitar player. Even the 2 bottom albums I mentioned above have some solid riffs to be found. This album has some great riffs all over it, and Broderick has some nice spots on Foregone as well. Anders is definitely more dynamic on this record, and I like his vocals way better than those last 2 albums. Out of the songs that were not released before the album, I think In the Dark is my favorite. Bleeding Out is great too though. Foregone will definitely be in my listening rotation for some time to come.
-
My favorite deep cut from the album is The Great Deceiver. Just love that track! And A Dialogue in B Minor has really grown on me over the last few listens. Great album overall, and, as twosuitluke says, early album of the year contender. Although, I'm hoping the new Avenged Sevenfold album takes that mantle when it finally gets released.

I didn't like it originally but for some reason it clicked this time.
-
Both Battles and I, The Mask aren't great. I actually think I, The Mask is their weakest record in the whole catalog. I was in the minority though and loved Siren Charms.
-
As I said a few posts ago, for me the whole run between A Sense of Purpose and I, the Mask is a big blur...some albums I don't even think I checked out in their entirety.
Perhaps I should give those a try. I understand that the consensus is that they are not very strong (especially compared to what came before)...but anything you guys deem relatively more worthy? Wolfking - you seem to appreciate Siren Charms...anything else?
-
Yea, A Sense of Purpose was the last album I truly loved, it was a decline over the next 4 albums for sure.
I actually didn't mind Sounds of a Playground Fading too much, and it's easily the best out of those 4, for me. I particularly love the song Liberation :metal
I remember trying hard with Siren Charms, but not really finding anything I liked on it. I've probably only heard Battles and Mask 2 or 3 times, and I can't remember anything about them.
-
Tastes are a fascinating thing. For me, A Sense of Purpose is one of their weakest along with Soundtrack to Your Escape and Siren Charms. A couple of fantastic songs in each, but the rest I find pretty bland and forgettable.
All their other albums from Reroute onwards I find pretty excellent, including the new one which is really great, could even be the best of the lot but it's far too early to tell.
-
Clayman is the most recent In Flames album I’ve listened to lol but I’m gonna give the new one a listen.

Oh I’ve heard some songs but I didn’t care for them.
But I’ve heard the first 3 tracks from the new one and liked them.

Yea it's weird, and often a comment more on where my personal music tastes are at the time an album releases. A Sense of Purpose came out when I was possibly at the height of my love for the band, so I was probably already 'sold' on the album in my mind. My love had started to wane by the time Sound of a Playground Fading came out, and even more so with the release of the other three.
As for Soundtrack to Your Escape, it's not my favourite but the first In Flames song I ever heard was My Sweet Shadow, which got me into them in the first place so.
Anyway, I'll chuck out an early album ranking...
1. Clayman
2. Come Clarity
3. Colony
4. Foregone
5. A Sense of Purpose
6. Soundtrack to Your Escape
7. Reroute to Remain
8. Lunar Strain
9. The Jester Race
10. Subterranean
11. Sounds of a Playground Fading
12. Whoracle
13. Siren Charms
14. Battles
15. I, The Mask
Yea I'm pretty happy with that as an early ranking. I'll probably get shit for ranking The Jester Race Sounds low but it's never done much for me.
-
Ooh ranking time. Some of these are very close together and can swap round at times, like the top 2, but mine would be something like this:
1. Colony
2. Clayman
3. Reroute to Remain
4. Foregone (TENTATIVE - could move up one or down one or two)
5. Come Clarity
6. Whoracle
7. Sounds of a Playground Fading
8. I, The Mask
9. Battles
10. A Sense of Purpose
11. The Jester Race
12. Siren Charms
13. Soundtrack to Your Escape
14. Lunar Strain/Subterranean

I've been pretty much an In Flames fanboy for a while now. But they did lose me with Battles. I thought Playground was quite tremendous but I'm with Rich in thinking that ASOP and Soundtrack are bottom tier.
Top 3 for me would be Jester, Reroute and Come Clarity.

Rich, your ranking is potentially more controversial than mine :lol Nick may have an attack of apoplexy upon seeing this!
Some of mine are pretty close also. My top 3 are locked in (at least at the moment) although Foregone has the chance to move up.
A Sense of Purpose, Soundtrack to Your Escape and Reroute to Remain are all so close they're basically joint 5th.
I'm enjoying diving back into the band after having years of listening to very little by the band.
-
Rich, your ranking is potentially more controversial than mine :lol Nick may have an attack of apoplexy upon seeing this!
:lol
Presumably the pre-Whoracle albums ranking so low? Jester Race is OK but the debut & EP I just don't enjoy at all.

Yea, I'm pretty sure I've heard Nick say he considers The Jester Race/Subterranean as the pinnacle of their sound.

ASOP is an interesting one. To me, it has some really great songs and riffs and that is what I always loved about it. It did take me some time at first to get used to Anders, as his vocals are quite different to what was on Come Clarity. Also, there are some cringey lyrics in places, but I got past it and really enjoyed that album. Soundtrack I have near the bottom too. The production is not great, and while there are a handful of good tracks, there is a bunch I don't care for.
Sounds of a Playground is one that I really like too. It might be their most consistent post-Clayman album, as I enjoy everything on it. I didn't like Siren Charms too much when it first came out, but it has actually grown on me quite a bit.
Clayman will always be my favorite. I think it has a near-perfect guitar tone and production. The run from The Jester Race to Clayman is god-tier, and while many of my metal friends dropped off after that, I stuck with their new stuff. Reroute is a great album that really isn't too far removed from Clayman, for the most part. I could have done without the white jumpsuits and jumpdafukup stuff though. I just kept buying the albums when they were released and for the most part enjoying them. They will always be one of my favorite bands. Here is my overall ranking.

Been listening to it just based on the hype and I feel like the hype is maybe a bit exaggerated because of how poor this band has been. Some would disagree but I can't find anything enjoyable from the last 15 years or so, it's been a rough road for me at least (and I know for some other fans). This album is not bad though and I would probably give it like a solid 6/10. I think context favors this album though, had this come out in 2010 I would still have thought of it as a disappointing album and not close to the classics, but when it releases after years and years of disappointing albums, it does look more favorable.
Overall I went into it with low expectations and came out enjoying it so I can't complain!
-
Everyone has their own preferences and ultimately their sound since RTR has been quite different to what it was up to Clayman, so I get why some fans aren't interested in their stuff anymore.
While my favourite two albums are from the older style, I still think they so a mostly great job with the newer style (with the odd dud album). I kind of agree with you in that the new album isn't much of a departure from what they've been doing for ages. I do think it's a damn good album though. Some fantastic songs.
-
For me, The Jester Race is by far their greatest album. It was one of my first introductions to harsh vocals though so that may have something to do with it.
-
Colony
Clayman
Whoracle
The Jester Race
Subterranean
Black Ash Inheritance
Reroute To Remain
Lunar Strain
Come Clarity
Soundtrack To Your Escape
Foregone (might move up a spot or two after more listens, dunno)
A Sense of Purpose
Sounds of a Playground Fading
I, the Mask
Siren Charms
Battles
That has to be about the widest spread I can think of for a band. Colony (particularly the SE version with "Man Made God") is one of my favorite albums ever, and Battles was practically unlistenable from my recollection. "The Truth" for some reason is the only thing I remember at all from it.

Huh. I enjoyed Battles. Took a listen to Colony today at work after seeing it ranked high in some of the lists here. Did not enjoy it at all haha.
Maybe i didn't give it a good enough go. What's the standout track on the record?
-
"Man Made God" is my favorite, then "Zombie Inc." "Embody the Invisible", and the title track. Do you like other 90s melodic death metal?

:lol :lol I sure did...in fact I'm just about recovering from it
Yeah, for me The Jester Race is basically a classic. But what surprises me a bit is putting together Lunar Strain and the Subterranean EP in the ranking. I mean, yes, the band itself literally did that when they re-released them :) What I'm saying, though, is that the leap from the debut to the EP for me is gigantic...quality-wise, production-wise, but also in terms of truly sharpening the songwriting. I think Lunar Strain is ok - a good debut - but with Subterranean they really mean business. So, for me, the The Jester Race/Subterranean really is where it's at.
-
Yeah, the worst thing about LS is the production, particularly on the guitars. It has some of their most intriguing songwriting ideas, and some of the violin work is especially nice, but the cohesiveness wasn't quite there yet.
-
"Man Made God" is my favorite, then "Zombie Inc." "Embody the Invisible", and the title track. Do you like other 90s melodic death metal?
None whatsoever. Trivium has been my gateway back to bands like In Flames. Had you asked me even 10 years ago to listen to music that had any measurable amount of screaming/growling, and I'd have told you to get bent. I always preferred clean vocals with my metal. Oh, how the times have changed
-
Forgot to mention it in my last post when talking about ASOP, but if you haven't heard the stuff from the Mirrors Truth EP, check it out. Those 3 tracks, Eraser, Tilt, and Abnegation, are all pretty solid and probably should have been on the album. I have a buddy that hates ASOP, but really likes that EP.
-
In the style of these bands mentioned lies an obscure gem of a band called The Unguided. Highly recommended!!!!!!
-
Ok, if I were to rank pre-ASOP albums (I'm liking Foregone a fair bit, but it's early), it would probably go like this:
- The Jester Race (and yes, Subterranean EP as a bonus companion)
- Whoracle
- Colony
- Clayman
- Reroute to Remain
- Lunar Strain
- Come Clarity
- Soundtrack to Your Escape
-

Ah, I'm not sure of your listening history, but there is definitely a large crowd of people who came in through the melodic metalcore, new wave of American heavy metal, or even alt metal scenes, and I can see how some of their newer material might have more appeal from that angle.

Do you mean The Unguided? I can't find any mention of a "The Misguided" anywhere. The Unguided is a spinoff from Sonic Syndicate, not really a favorite of mine, but they have some good stuff here and there.

Sorry, I don't think I was very clear now that I've re-read your question. It's not that I don't like any 90's melo-death bands. I just don't know any. I'd gladly take a recommendation though. I'm always up to listening to new to me music.

Agree. I have that EP. At the time I made my own extended version of ASOP which included those 3 songs.

I'd go for Dark Tranquillity's Projector, At The Gates' Slaughter of the Soul, Soilwork's A Predator's Portrait, and Arch Enemy's Wages of Sin for some classics. And then Nightrage's Sweet Vengeance, Eventide's Diaries From the Gallows, and Callenish Circle's My Passion // Your Pain for some more overlooked artists. Not all 90s releases, but I think they're a good bridge between the OGs and the 00s proliferation of the style.

Ah, I'm not sure of your listening history, but there is definitely a large crowd of people who came in through the melodic metalcore, new wave of American heavy metal, or even alt metal scenes, and I can see how some of their newer material might have more appeal from that angle.
In the style of these bands mentioned lies an obscure gem of a band called THE MISGUIDED. Highly recommended!!!!!!
Do you mean The Unguided? I can't find any mention of a "The Misguided" anywhere. The Unguided is a spinoff from Sonic Syndicate, not really a favorite of mine, but they have some good stuff here and there.
Yes, I just went to correct my post. The Unguided. I enjoy their stuff. Not original by any means but definitely well done.

Sorry, I don't think I was very clear now that I've re-read your question. It's not that I don't like any 90's melo-death bands. I just don't know any. I'd gladly take a recommendation though. I'm always up to listening to new to me music.

How could you forget Heartwork by Carcass?! Essential listening.

I guess I was thinking about the Swedish bands (though Amott was part of that scene as well), but then Callenish Circle is Dutch, so I got sidetracked anyway. But yeah, they're essential as well.

Oh yes indeed, I will go to far as say that it's still the best MDM album ever made, for me nothing comes close to this.

Heartwork is a classic for sure.

Giving The Jester Race a fresh listen for the first time in a long while and enjoying it a fair bit. I'll see it gets back into my good books.
Guess I should also give Subterranean another go too.

Nick told me too a few months back and I thought it was quite amazing. I never really gave it my time but it's really excellent. Make sure you do check it Rich.

:tup
@ariich - yes, if you found yourself enjoying The Jester Race on this latest revisit, you should definitely give Subterranean another shot. If you tend to associate it to Lunar Strain in the way you remember it, you might be surprised. A lot of the sharper songwriting and melodies on The Jester Race have their seeds here. It's an interesting bit of their discography too, in that even the line-up was in full transition. Other than the two guitars and bass, the rest was guest spots, really - the singer was Henke Forss of Dawn fame (another Swedish band of that era) and drum duties were split between the Dark Tranquillity drummer and Daniel Erlandsson.
Man, the guitars on this are so, so good. It's almost like they were bursting with fantastic guitar licks and melodies. And those acoustic bits too. Fantastic stuff.
-
Ok so I've given both albums a bit more time and yes, Subterranean is definitely a massive step up from Lunar Strain. I still wouldn't say I love it, except for Stand Ablaze which is fantastic, but it's a very solid EP and I agree with what you say Nick - you can hear in it the early makings of the next few albums.
The Jester Race is even better and I don't really know why I went off it for a while. If anything I think it's probably just that for a long time I wasn't especially into death metal apart from In Flames and Children of Bodom (and Opeth who probably count, I guess). It's been in the past 5 years or so, mainly thanks to my roulettes, that I've got much more into various forms of melodic extreme metal, and so maybe I'm just more open to the style. Probably still around mid-table for me so not sure it'll climb the rankings that much, but I definitely rate it more highly and I think it'll end up in the "love" category meaning I'll end up buying it.
-
Good stuff Rich.
-
Good stuff indeed!
Glad to hear you re-gained some appreciation for these records. As I said before, The Jester Race truly is a special album for me. Brings back memories of a time of great music discoveries…

Pretty much the same for me mate. Was one of the first maybe 3 or 4 albums of harsh vocals that made me love them.
-
I've only listened to a few albums by In Flames and they've got some great material. Although, I'm gonna have to go against the flow and say that my favorite from the ones I heard is I, The Mask. It's also the first one I heard from them and the one I listened to the most, but after hearing Foregone, Come Clarity and Clayman 2 or 3 times each, I still prefer I, The Mask even though the other albums are great too. The songs are so catchy and I especially love the last one, Stay With Me; so much emotions in that song. Anyway, after reading this thread, I realize that my love for I, The Mask is a bit eccentric.
-
Just listening to Sounds of a Playground Fading and it's really not that bad an album. Unfortunately the only real standout song is Liberation for me, although so much of the album is really solid. I just feel like loads of the songs are on the cusp of being really good, but don't quite get there.

I really like that one. The title track, Deliver Us, A New Dawn and Fear is the Weakness are all really top songs IMO.
-
I went out and picked up a copy of the new album on CD over the weekend. Will spin it this week.
-
I am really enjoying the new album. I've pretty much been listening to it non-stop for over a week and haven't grown sick of it yet. Some really strong songs and hooks.

Easily my album of the year so far. That may all change as we have new Haken and Enslaved on Friday.
I've just been listening to The Jester Race, how am I only just realising that Wayfaerer is such a good song!?
-
Pretty sure nothing will top the new Katatonia for me, but I am definitely loving Foregone so much.
I had almost forgotten about the new Enslaved. They don't have a bad album in their catalog, so I don't think I'll be disappointed there.
-
I must be missing something
I ran through this CD today in the car and.......I didn't like it.......at all. A few of the singles on their own were quite good but on a whole, I thought it was quite poor.
The talk of In Flames of old is back is absolute drivel. A couple of the singles did have some CC era vibes but this is really another extension of the last two.
I'll try again but I'm extremely disappointed.
-
I don't get the people saying it's AOTY material, but it did seem noticeably better than the last few from my first listen (plus the singles). That's a ways from their glory days, but I was starting to think they'd either keep trending in the wrong direction or be perpetually stuck in mediocrity, so it at least gives some hope. As long as Anders is their vocalist and he insists on all the cleans, which he's not good at, I think there's a pretty hard ceiling for them though.
-
Kade....you're chock full of Aussie nonsense. Give it another spin or two.
Maybe it's because I require my metal to have either catchy hooks or dual guitar melodic harmonies, but I thought this was the best In Flames record. It's not even close, in my opinion. I can see how a fan of their earlier work probably wouldn't like the newer material, but Battles was a decent album and this one blows it out of the water.
As for the clean vocals debate, I don't mind Anders' work on this album. Pure Light of Mind is exclusively clean vocals, and it's a quality track IMO. His vocals used to grate on me a touch, but I think he's matured as a vocalist over the last 2 albums. My tastes have also changed over the last 6 or 7 years, so I'm sure that has something to do with it.

I agree with this post. I don't see how it can be album of the year, nor does it come close to being as great of an album like Colony is. But it is a step in the right direction for me - I like hearing the older In Flames style in their new music.
-
I wouldn't say the new album is a return of In Flames of old, but it's certainly a return to form as far as I'm concerned. This album is growing on me more and more each time I listen.
As for being an album of the year contender, being as we're only two months into the year it's the best album I've heard so far. I've probably sampled like 30 albums this year and yea, it's the best of the bunch. Like I said, I'm expecting Enslaved and Haken to top it though.
-
Yeah, I would say the new In Flames is the best album I have heard this year so far.
I also wouldn't really compare it to 'old' In Flames, it is still 'new' In Flames, the songs are just really great.
-
You can't compare the new album to their older stuff. With that said, they seemed to have reinvented their craft in top form. The "new era" of In Flames is brilliant and just well written. If they write songs this great in the same new style going forward I'm all in.
-

First part.......yes, correct. :lol
Second bolded part! :eek
Thing is, I'm on the record of liking the new material. Haven't been fond of the last two and IMO the new one is like a slightly heavier part 3 of a trilogy.
-
I'll try again, but I really hated Anders clean vocals on this one. Something about them just annoyed me everytime he went into them. His harsh vocals though are excellent.
-
Kade, if you don't like it, you don't like it. Why force it? :)

I do agree overall that any claims of "old In Flames is back" aren't right. The overall style is the post-Clayman style. But that said, more than any other album since then, there is a big infusion of stylings from their earlier albums. It's not a return to their original style but it's bringing a fair bit of it back in to their current one.
-
It's not even a return to the CC/ASOP style IMO. There's a few touches we heard in the singles, but on a whole each track had the same formula and Anders clean vocals are more clean than before. It's just a new In Flames album IMO.
-
I'm on the side of Kade on this one, although my opinion is not as harsh.
It's certainly better than the last couple In Flames albums, especially Battles which I could not finish. But out of their post "Come Clarity" material I do like "Sounds of a Playground Fading" and "Siren Charms" more.
"Foregone" definitely has it's highlights. I like "The Great Deceiver" quite a bit for example. But this is not fantastic on any metric IMO.

This is one of the best sounding live recordings by In Flames i've heard. The bass is meaty and Anders sounds great. :metal
To bad they didn't play December Flower like they did at Dalhalla.

Only two songs before 2000 though...

I don't think this should really come as a surprise anymore.

At the non-festival dates earlier on this tour they have been playing more old stuff. My friend saw them in Virginia, and they played Behind Space, Stand Ablaze, Graveland, The Hive, and Scorn. Wish I could have made that show.
Looks like they have been switching the sets up a good bit lately, adding some stuff from ASOP and Sounds of a Play... The last couple of shows they busted out Ordinary Story, Colony, and DECEMBER FLOWER! for the first time since the 90's!

Indeed! Graveland, December Flower and, my goodness, Stand Ablaze! That’s a choice cut, for sure…I absolutely love the Subterranean EP, and I didn’t think they were going to bust out any songs from that one, ever…
-
Yeah, "Stand Ablaze" is one of my favorites of theirs. With Broderick it's the first time ever that they'd had a guitarist who has the chops to pull off the "December Flower" solo. Maybe Henrik Danhage could have done it when he toured with them for a bit. But the solo is essential to the song. Frederik Johansson was incredible.

I’ve sampled a few songs here and holy shit you guys are right, they sound great here. I don’t think I’ve ever really watched any live In Flames performances before, and I think I’ve only seen them live like 3 or 4 times. Each time was either in support of another band, or an afternoon festival slot. I’ve never had the urge to pay out to see them headline, as I know they’ve been hit and miss since I’ve been a fan (Anders at least).
I’m gonna save this to watch when I’ve got a free evening and can kick back with a beer or two. Who knows, maybe I’ll even try to catch them next time they headline over here :metal

I remember back on like ‘06, when first getting into In Flames, I signed up for a year subscription of Metal Hammer Magazine. As part of the promotion you could chose from a bunch of live DVDs to go with the subscription. After much agonising I went with Used and Abused. After a few months the DVD still hadn’t arrived. I contacted the magazine and they said they were out of stock so sent me some other DVD. I can’t remember what it was now, but I remember it was a band I wasn’t even remotely interested in. I was gutted :lol I was skint back then so didn’t exactly spend much money on live DVDs. I only got round to listening to the audio for that live performance fairly recently, like the last two years. I’ll have to give it a go.
-
Bastards probably kept it for themselves mate and sent you some other shit. :lol

Fuckers! I’ll have to settle for YouTube now.
Also, if we ever play “which metal band member is your doppelgänger?” then mine is Björn Gelotte. My hair is almost 100% white now (a few darker ones still left in my beard) and since he’s gone more grey I look more and more like him. Just need grow my beard long again, like I had it a few years ago and I’m there.

Looks like it was just for the North American dates in late '06-early '07. Bjorn's wife was having their second child, and Jesper was out for "personal reason" (I think in retrospect we probably know that was likely a bout of alcoholism now?). So Danhage and Engelin filled in. Most of the footage that comes up on Youtube is incredibly shitty looking and sounding, but this at least shows them.
