this may be a bit of a far-fetched hypothesis, but maybe the song name "the shamans trance", if it has in fact been changed, was dismissed as it could be a form of drug reference.
shamans have been known to utilize or advocate the use of psychoactive drugs, notably psilocyben mushrooms and dimethyltryptamine (DMT, from native plants, leaves etc.) in order to "discover" one's self and their place in nature (or something like that :lol). In this psychoactive state, a shamans chant is utilized to help induce a particular state of mind under the influence of these substances.
Maybe the potential allusion of drug-use could be a reason to change the name?
Well, that is far-fetched.

They have an entire series of songs based on alcohol, and they have covered an entire Pink Floyd album, a band who is best known for drug influences... I doubt DT is worried about people speculating about drugs because they have a title with the word "shaman" in it lol.

KevShmev

Pink Floyd is NOT best known for drug influences.  Just because they made music that was great to get stoned to doesn't mean they were on drugs at the time, least of all that that is what they are most known for.  Heck, Roger Waters is on record as admitting that he has done drugs twice in his life (as of the mid 90s).

italianoman

I'm firmly in the Bridges in the Sky camp on this one...I never liked Shaman's Trance; sounds like a guaranteed-to-be insane Steve Vai track, not DT. That said, it seems like it'd be difficult to rename a song (with a title that seems to share no obvious relation to the previous) with lyrical content so this pushes it a bit towards the 'instrumental' side of the fence in my eyes.

SystematicThought

John Myung confirmed in an interview that they changed the title because it sounded too spooky.

(I'm sorry, but coupled with the news feed on here and having just watched that DVD again, I couldn't let it go)

I honestly believed that for about two seconds.

With the instrumental disc being confirmed as part of a special edition, it seems likely that none of the tracks will be instrumental on the full record.

Jamesman42

So wait.

The Shaman's trance WILL be an instrumental

No, for real, on the 2nd disc. That's not a joke.
\o\ lol /o/

Not necessarily, I still think there's a possibility of an instrumental track (although unlikely at this point).  When they released the instrumental versions of BC&SL they were not only missing the vocals but also guitar/key solos.  I wouldn't be surprised that if there IS an instrumental track, they included it on the instrumental CD just to be thorough, and perhaps removed the solos and just left the rhythm instrumental.  I would be ok with listening to that, if it was a really cool instrumental.

However I would place my bets on no instrumental for this album.  There hasn't been an instrumental track since... Train of Thought?  There probably wont be another one any time soon.

I never understood why they removed the lead guitar from the BC&SL instrumental mixes...I hope they leave them in this time

I always assumed it was to not make James feel like he was being the only one cut out of the mix, so they cut out some of JP and JR's stuff as well, for the instrumentals.

I also think it was for people to more easily hear the rhythm sections underneath the solos if they wanted to recreate it with a cover band.

I don't see how they would release the same thing twice on the same album.

unklejman

Well if the second one had leads removed like on Black Clouds....

I've said this elsewhere, but if you were releasing an instrumental edition of Train of Thought, would you segue Vacant straight into In the Name of God?

Throwing in the instrumental as-is allows the instrumental album to flow as the lyrical album should. It's not just a collection of instrumentals to download and chuck into a playlist, it's the album sans lyrics. They'd keep Bridges in the Sky whichever way.

According to Roadrunner the tracklengths are as followed:

They are all 26 minutes long with a 37 second coda.

Just got another reply:
I think it's worth a small news post later in the week!

Νice! Thanks for asking Johny!
I really hope they kept long songs at a minimum.

fadetoblackdude7

I'm gonna predict that Breaking All Illusions is the longest song on the album.

chknptpie

I really enjoy the instrumentals on BC&SL, sometimes I think I like them better than the originals.

^ Same here.

I will predict that too. I used to think it was going to be Beneath the Surface until it was announced it was JP's "own" song.

James confirmed the change of title:
"Hey Everyone, Yes 'Bridges in the Sky' is in fact Shaman's. Make a note of it and enjoy while listening. Although you'll have to wait a bit."

JP wrote the lyrics for what was originally titled Shamans' but there was a line in the song that says Bridges in the Sky hence the new name

So there you have it, its not instrumental...

Again, nobody ever said it was.

Well, lots of people said it was. Just no-one important

Shucks am I disappointed that Raw Dog isn't going to be included on this album or the bonus disc

darkshot

For some reason people assumed that because it had a weird name that didn't fit the rest of the songs, that was proof enough to start saying its an instrumental.  Well now they changed the name to something more appropriate, they probably realized it sounded out of place as well...
