It's not just BMS. It's the demo version

Sticking Hell's Kitchen in the middle of a bad song inappropriately does not make it awesome.  :loser:

I like Burning My Soul but I would NEVER rank it above ACOS, with or without Hell's Kitchen.

Seventh Son

I'd rank Hell's Kitchen above ACOS, but not Burning My Shit.

25. Metropolis Pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper

I think I'm going to be killed for this. I'll be honest here, this song is only a trifle overrated. I mean, the song is an absolute prog monster, but I feel there are better songs on Images and Words. However, everything about this song is amazing. The lyrics may not make much sense but the music is spectacular. The instrumental section towards the end is a totally awesome meandering experimental section and I love it. Even better when JP/JR duel during it live. Plus DAT BASS SOLO *drools*. I can play every part of this song on bass EXCEPT the solo. Damn you, John Myung.

24. The Great Debate

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you all hate me now :neverusethis:. I like this song more than most people do. It's the sort of experimentation that I wish Dream Theater would do more of. The samples may take up a fair bit of time but I think they work very well with the bass groove and the drums. The lyrics are great. Definitely some of JP's best, as they deal with a real-world issue and not whatever it is Under A Glass Moon is about :lol. Yet another song I would like to hear live, even though it probably won't get a great crowd response. And I have just one question: ARE YOU JUSTIFIED? :metal

23. In The Name of God

This song is riff heaven. I've said a billion times I don't like Train of Thought. This song is clearly the best on the album and dammit it deserves that rank. But for all the great things about this song I have one complaint: it could be shorter. The ending is a bit drawn out and parts of it feel longer than they should be. But most of Train of Thought is like that anyway, so whatever. Anyway, John Myung's bass groove under the solos is by far one of the best things he's done. It's a great example of what you can do with the bass when you're playing straight metal, and I don't know why he didn't do more of it on BCSL. Excellent song. I want to hear this one live as well

22. Fatal Tragedy

One of the only other songs off of Scenes that I can listen to standalone. Fatal Tragedy is an excellent piece of musicianship and lyrics (:heart John Myung lyrics). And ridiculously fun to play (on bass at least). I think what I like most about Fatal Tragedy is the basslines that are played under the guitars/keys at the end of the song. JMX really knows what he's doing and should bring more of this stuff to the table during the writing process (not that he doesn't all the time). It's a heavy song, but it's balanced out by the prog instrumental section. The rising/falling section with keys/guitar is amazing. One of the best instrumental sections they've ever done. That is all.

21. Scarred

It's hard to describe why I like this song. Perhaps because it's the first DT song I learned on bass. I remember seeing this played live in 2007 and thinking "oh my god I'd love to play that". Mostly because of the bass-tapping intro. So awesome. This further solidifies Awake as the best Dream Theater album for, once again, the perfect mix of metal and progressive. To be honest, I don't see why this song is so divisive. People either love it to death or hate it to death. I've yet to see a fan who says "I like it, but it's not my favorite". Or maybe that's just because we only get the most outspoken fans on these boards :P. I also thought it had a great vibe live, and don't know why people thought it came up short. I quite enjoyed it when I saw it.

Great 5. And no I don't hate you for the TGD placement, it's a good placement.  :P

orcus116

Not a bad placement for Metropolis. I also don't worship it as much as most but it's still a good song.

glaurung

I didn't really care about where you placed A Change of Seasons but Metropolis at 25?

I'd have Metropolis higher, but not too much higher. Top 20 for sure, not sure how much higher though.

Place all those songs except In the Name of God ten places higher and that would look similar to my list.

Mladen

All of these are way too low, except for In the name of God. Still, always great to see The Great debate and Scarred in people's top 25.  :)

For the most part my top 20 will be pretty standard though. Trying to rank everything else was a challenge, and hence why a lot of these placements and songs are strange

Standard top 20 without ACOS, Metropolis, or Fatal Tragedy?  Does not exist, sir.

?

Great choices, except that Metropolis and Scarred should be higher. But  :tup for putting TGD that high! It seems to be quite underrated.
