There should be no complaints whatsoever about a Top 10 appearance by Scarred.

This is true.

Damn right I am gonna complain about "Scarred" being at number 3.  It is two spots too low. :)

Soo what could exceepd my favourite melody of all time? Well how about the amazing, the stunning, the brilliant, the predictable...
1. A Change Of Seasons
Is this music? This can't be music. It's better than music. It's aCoS! *drools* This song is absolutely stunning. It can't be described, but I'll try anyway. The song begins with the gentle 7-string acoustic guitar intro of The Crimson Sunrise. It explodes into a storm of heavy riffing and the drums being absolutely pounded. After thats done, LaBrie comes in on the Innocence section sounding absolutely amazing. I really love the chorus in this section. Carpe Diem is a silent ballad section with really sad lyrics and very effective voice sections. But as far as I'm concerned, although those parts are all brilliant, the song hasn't even started yet. Oh no. Not until the next section, The Darkest Of Winters. This section contains a really groovy riff and constant time signature changes. I really can't describe this section, it's just pure proggy awesomeness. Now that section is amazing, but nothing, and I mean NOTHING, compares to the final three sections of the song. The best moments in all music to me. First we have Another World, one of if not THE most beautiful section in all modern music. And trust me, I've heard A LOT of absolutely stunning passages. But almost everything pales in comparison to this. After this absolutely beautiful section is done, we are greated to an absolutely stunning guitar solo in The Inevitable Summer which slowly builds up. After this solo, a train horn blows and we have another groovy riff. After this is a great keyboard solo from Sherinian. And after that section, LaBrie sings a few words. And after one last repitition of a riff, all instruments shift into full emotion and we get LaBrie shouting out the final lyrics in a way that gives me goosebumps. And finally, the acoustic intro is repeated, and the song is over.

So that was my list. I had fun making it, and I hope you guys enjoyed.  :D

A very deserving Top 1! :tup

Actually I'm just glad that Trial of Tears is not Top 1.

Excellent pick. It wouldn't be my number 1(LtL), but it would be close.

BRGM

hmmmm. yeah ACOS is pretty good...Nor very memorable for me though, but I love  Carpe Diem :D  :D

Great number one and the coolest list so far, I might say.  :tup

This exactly.  Great choice, and great list!

Alright people, here it is. I'm probably the most important person to make a top 50 so you all better pay attention :neverusethis:

Let me first say though that low placement does not mean I hate the song. DT's discography is really strong and, of course, I have different opinions than you do.

Enjoy :D

50. Never Enough

Despite the lyrical contributions by Mike, this song happens to rock pretty hard. It's the sort of song you sort of love and hate at the same time, hence the number 50 spot. I love the unison, and I still cannot play this song on bass. I don't know how these guys do it sometimes. Still, I love it. It's in no way the worst song on Octavarium.

49. The Shattered Fortress

Not my favorite piece of the AA suite but a great piece nonetheless. The recurring themes from the previous songs tie it together nicely. I also like that Mike's responsible now. I was thinking at one point he'd never be responsible again. This took the number 3 place on BCSL after I decided ANTR wasn't as great as I recall.

INVENTORY

48. Innocence Faded

Yeah, it's low. But it's not a bad song. Far from it. Awake is such a strong album that there are no bad songs. Containing some of James' best singing work, Innocence Faded is a remarkable display of what Dream Theater can do. John Petrucci's solo at the end wraps up the song perfectly, and it was amazing to see on Score. Even after 12 years, James could sing that song. Damn.

47. Peruvian Skies

Chill. Laid back. Epic. Falling Into Infinity gets so much flack I almost can't believe it. John Myung's use of fretless really gives this song atmosphere. Derek is pretty minimal here, but sometimes that's a good thing. This is one of my favorite songs to play on bass. Even though I don't have a 6 string fretless, I still enjoy playing it.

46. Lie

The transition from The Mirror is so flawless it could almost be part of the same song. Which is why separating them live is no good. I think it would kill the mood, despite not having seen either of them live. I don't know why this song gets hated on as much as it does. It's not bad. Though for Dream Theater I suppose it is a bit bland. I put it ahead of Innocence Faded only because of the awesome hard rock vibe. Kevin Moore has the great ability to add atmosphere to songs that, quite frankly, Jordan can't do. I like Jordan, but he's a bit too... in your face with his keyboards.

Mladen

This one will be very interesting. Cool so far, except for TSF and Lie.

skydivingninja

The unison in Never Enough is awesome, but otherwise, meh.  I'll actually follow this one because I must obey the will of the Geddy Lee J-Bass.

@LieLow: Great list. I am very glad Octavarium wasn't above ACoS, and it's nice to see Scarred get that much love (it's in my top three too).

BRGM

Nice maaan! Cool to see a top 50 from a bassist, I had no Idea about that Myung used a fretless on Peruvian skies

LieLowTheWantedMan

Never Enough is a bit too similar to Stockholm Syndrome. Still, it's not that bad.

Marvellous G

Great list LieLow, although I've always thought ACOS was a bit overrated.

Also very good list so far PLM. I think Never Enough and all of FII are way better than some people seem to think here.

BRGM

I agree! FII grows on me each time I listen to it, I dig Dereks work. And I've never had any problems with Never Enough, that little instrumental section is pure awesomenishenshensheinsheibnsnhess

Marvellous G

Yeah, I actually think Derek is my favourite out of the 3.

This to the max. Thats actually my least favourite song on Awake, but I still think it's great.

Really? hmm, I think JR Fits for DT more, but I really appreciate Planet X, that really do does have som awesome music

orcus116

Technically speaking JR does fit the best but I don't think they've been able to utilize him creatively to the level he's capable of.

You can tell the difference. Well, I can at least. He use a fretless for a few songs. Through Her Eyes is another that has really sick fretless work.

DTF Labs is currently hard at work on a BRGM Decoder Ring. We're about halfway there.
