Good! I am also an SC lover.

I suppose I'm the lone SC hater in this thread. Half of Systematic Chaos would be in my bottom 10 DT songs. ITPOE Pt. 1/Repentance/The Ministry of Lost Souls are exempt though. Still, its a very  :| release for Dream Theater to me.
I don't hate it, but it's in the bottom half of their releases for me.

AwakeFromOctavarium

3 Awake songs even before Top 30. I have a bad feeling about this list.

Quote from: Marvellous G on September 18, 2010, 02:02:20 PMSomeone Like Him has some amazing guitar work, and manages to capture a kind of eeriness that I can't really describe, but get a vibe of throughout the whole song.
Octavarium is VERY eerie. Ghostly, almost. I'd call Octavarium ghostly. Happily. Actually, the entire album gets quite eerie towards the end. From Never Enough onwards, it's ghosts all the way down.

By that token, actually, I'd say that Octavarium is more unique than ACoS. I can't think of another DT song that's even in the same ballpark as Someone Like Him. ACoS is more densely packed with ideas, but Octavarium gives the ideas a lot of space to breathe. I really like that. I don't think that four minute intro would be the same cut down to 2 minutes, and there aren't many other bands who would write something like that. Not many other bands who'd write anything like A Change of Seasons, either, but ACoS sounds like a sum total of their career. Octavarium is something new. Ethereal. I like that.

Oooh, you've made me want to listen to Octavarium, now. Brilliant album. Superb. Get it all dribbling down my ears.

This is a perfect explanation.  All hail RobWebster.

I'm right there with ya.

LieLowTheWantedMan

Octavarium is actually my favourite intro of all time along with Shine On You Crazy Diamond, which is almost the same only Shine On uses more guitar and less weird effects. I guess I'm just a fan of spacey, ambient intros.

Jarlaxle

I usually skip the intro until Rudess really starts getting into the lapsteel guitar.

well I won't if I have it on a CD or my iPod and it is on lock. But I will skip ahead when I don't have 24 minutes to listen to music, just so I can get the best parts.  ::)

42. One Last Time
The first time I heard this song I didn't think too much of it. But the more I listened to it the more I love it. It certainly isn't a normal DT song, where as the music in mainly focused on James the whole way through (apart from the solo). But James really does stand out a lot on this song and I think its one of his best performances on a studio track. Lyrics are awesome like all the other songs are on SFAM. The ending is really cool as it builds up and up with James's singing. JR does some cool piano work here too.

41. Never Enough
So yer this song does sound a bit like a muse song. But being a muse fun that just makes it even better for me. Portnoy's drumming stands out for especially on this song. The riff after the solo is pretty epic too. Funny thing about Portnoy's lyrics to me are "what would you say if I walked away" well I guess he got his answer.

40. 6:00

Another Awake song, but you should get used to it as 8/11 of Awake makes this list :p Like many others have said before, Portnoy's drumming on this song is just fantastic. Now I'm not an expert on drums, but can play basic stuff but I could never learn to play this song. But yer the chorus is really cool on this one. Intro is really nice too. But the real question is what will Mike do this Christmas morning at 6:00?

39. Afterlife

WDADU is my least favourite DT album. Mainly because I don't like Charlie's voice that much. But this song definitely sticks out for me on the album. The main riff is nice and catchy. Chorus is really good too, but I definitely prefer the score version (or WDADRU) to the studio version. The best part of this song has to be the unison though, which is so epic.

It would be interesting to hear his take on our reaction. I would guess he is extremely disappointed. After the initail shock wore off, we're all pretty much like "meh, DT will live on".  :lol

Also could the thread title be changed to my name too please :p

It really does rock. The instrumental section blows me away.

If it's anything like your LOST list then I expect it.

moffatt

It does in some ways but there is new types of placements (if you get what I mean)

Seventh Son

Not bad, except for Never Enough but I never cared much for it.

38. This Dying Soul
Such a broootal song. "I wanna feel your body breaking" such awesome lyrics. The AA suite is amazing the whole way through. Portnoy does some ace drumming on this song too. I love the effects they did on James's voice too, I think they work great. The last 2 minutes are epic though, I know a few people probably find them too "wanky" but I its done perfectly.

37.  Overture 1928

Such a cool song. It packs in a lot of the highlights from the whole CD. Every single riff is epic. Perfect way to follow Regression. My favourite part has to be the Dance of Eternity part. Although its like 9 seconds long it still owns. Not much else to say about this song. Love the way it runs into SDV as well(which may or may not come up later :p).

36. Caught in a Web
You know Awake is a good album when 1/3 of my choices so far have been from it. For me this song sums up Awake for me. Cool into riff, groovy keys, JLB's pitch of voice, and awesome catchy chorus, epic solo and good short-ish instrumental section. This would be a cool song to see live as well.

35. Ytse Jam
This is my favourite off WDADU (mainly because there is no Charlie in it :p) but yer this is my second favourite DT instrumental. The intro riff is really good and the main riff off course. This is what I would call DT's YYZ, shortish length, catchy instrumental that focus's on every instrument which overall makes it a great song.

I really like the music in that part but the vocal melody and the lyrics always make me think of Linkin Park, especially those chorus lines.

LieLowTheWantedMan

Hey, I don't like lists UNLESS they have some controversy mixed in. I rather like this one so far.

Seventh Son

Well... my top 5 is pretty wtf so you can rejoice later! Hell, my whole top 20 is pretty unconventional.

Jarlaxle

Mladen

Some cool choices, although Ytse Jam wouldn't make my top 50. The others would be higher.
