45. This Dying Soul

If you were to ask people what their least favorite song from the AA Suite is, they'll probably tell you that it's This Dying Soul. They're idiots. The song is awesome. Way better than Repentence, anyway. It rocks hard. It can be shortened (much like every song on Train of Thought), but it's still good. The rapping is a little weird at first, but I've learned to appreciate it. Shreddy solos aren't really my thing, either, but I can bear the ones here.

This song is Number 1 on my list.

Wow really?

Yeah, I just loved it from the first time I heard it and have never gotten tired of it.  It's perfect metal IMO.  The main riffs is so fucking good, and the pure power and strenth of this 11.5 minute song is overwhelming.

Love John's solo in the intro, James raps are great, the Dave Mustaine 'ghosts of yesterday' section is stunning, especially the time signatures underneath.  The Glass Prison reprise is a great touch, and the last minute is possibly IMO the best thing they have ever done.

WAT

Instrumentally I mean.  I guess I'd say it's my fav DT moment, not necessarily the best thing they've done.

BRGM

Yeah that's nice Wolfking! Apprieciate it! It's sooo underrated, probably the best part in the AA suite. and it's freaking sick to play on guitar!  :omg:

AwakeFromOctavarium

You must be quite good then. Do you have a seven string guitar?

Oh yeah. It's incredibly epic, definitely the best ending they have ever come up with, along with the last minutes of Ministry of lost souls.

I agree with everything you said (except the last minute the best thing they've ever done, but it's freakin awesome), yet it's still low on my list.  :lol

I think Jordan is a great classical player too but I would not point to something as bland and uninspired as TALW as an example.

I don't think it's bland and uninspired though
I can't for the life of me figure out why not.

But hey, it's your list, go for what you know, bro.

Yeah I just don't quite approve of the current discussion, if you know what I mean. Not quite serious here.

.. Yeah, I think TDS is a bad ass song as well. I'm glad it popped up on your list, PLM. So many great hooks.

The piano and melodies during the "All yourrr sins will oonlly make youuu strong" building up to "will help you break through the prison walls" And the crushing riffs and drums. :metal

Yes I do have a 7-string

But no, I can't play the unison in the end, it's so loong :O so many stuff to memorize! It's just too much for me so far, I've just been playing for like less than 2 years yet so...

Let's just say I wouldn't have picked any of those songs for my top 50.

I probably wouldn't either. Well maybe Teh Ministry of Lost Iains.

PlaysLikeMyung

Once again, I apologize for the delay. I went to the beach on thursday and developed sun poisoning. also i've been working far too much. and i need to do a shit ton of packing for next saturday. so sorry if this list is sparse for now :P

35. The Silent Man

Short, sweet, awesome. Without a doubt one of DT's finest short songs, The Silent Man is a perfect example of "less is more".  Acoustic songs aren't really DT's strong point, but this one works very well. It's about John Myung, in case you didn't know :neverusethis:. But really. I feel that we get stiffed every time Erotomania and Voices are played without The Silent Man. The three are really meant to be played together, but they still work on their own. Epic.

34. The Best of Times

This is quite a beautiful song. I wasn't sure what I was expecting from a song we knew to be about Mike's father. Would it have an ACOS feel? It really didn't. The violin gave the song a melancholy atmosphere fitting to the song. And then we get to the Rush/Spirit of Radio section. The song picks up and it's not a depressing, emo song about his dad's death. It's about the good times they spent together. Plus, that guitar solo. DAMN. Easily one of the best things JP has written. I don't understand the hate for the lyrics. I think they're great.

33. Honor Thy Father

Br00tal. Double bass intro into DAT RIFF. :metal. I'm not a fan of Train of Thought as a whole. The majority of the songs go on for far too long (this one included, actually), and they're mostly bland and uninspired. But I like this one better than most. It's epic riffage and shredding. And also one of the most metal moments in Dream Theater: DON'T CROSS THE CROOKED STEP *epic riff*. This song gets far too much hate. It doesn't deserve it all.

32. The Dark Eternal Night

NO. ONE. DARED TO. SPEAK OF THE TERRIBLE DANGER. :metal. One of my favorites off of Systematic Chaos. And I'm normally not one a fan of DT's metal side. I think what grabbed me most about this song was the ragtime bits. Jordan has such a quirky presence in Dream Theater. I also loved the animation to the song live. Am I remembering correctly, that BlobVanDam is responsible for that? Or was that something else?... Oh well. This is also a great live song. I'd much rather hear this again than Constant Motion.

31. The Mirror

DUN DUN DUN. DUN DUN DUN. DUN DUN DUN. DUN DUN DUN.  This is such a fantastic song. I really don't even need to say anything. Everyone knows how awesome this song is. Appreciate it. Also, no it's part of the AA suite at all and should be kept separate at all times.

zxlkho

The Silent Man is a nice pick :tup

Glad to see it on your list.

BRGM

yeeeeah maan! those last 5 choices are like  :hefdaddy !! I agree about Honor thy father is one of the best on ToT

Mladen

Nah, only The Best of Times and The Mirror would make my top 50...

Store brand?  You mean, like generic, instead of Hawaiian Tropic or something?
