45. This Dying Soul

If you were to ask people what their least favorite song from the AA Suite is, they'll probably tell you that it's This Dying Soul. They're idiots. The song is awesome. Way better than Repentence, anyway. It rocks hard. It can be shortened (much like every song on Train of Thought), but it's still good. The rapping is a little weird at first, but I've learned to appreciate it. Shreddy solos aren't really my thing, either, but I can bear the ones here.

44. Home

I can hear some of your screams. Yes, Home is number 44. Let me tell you why: Scenes From A Memory works far better if you play the whole album at once. I find it difficult to listen to most of the songs standalone without feeling the urge to play the ones that come after it. That being said, Home is a great piece. WOMP WOMP. WOMP WOMP. Epic. The sex noises are alright. Awkward if other people can hear it, but I understand why they put it in (inb4thatswhatshesaid). Home continues the story of Scenes very well and the musicianship is fantastic as usual. Jordan's sitar solo is amazing. We need more world instruments and less iphone.

43. Take Away My Pain

Perhaps people don't expect this song to be on my list (or any other list for that matter). I'll first say that Falling Into Infinity haters can kindly leave now :P. Take Away My Pain is a beautiful song, even though some of John's lyrics confuse the hell out of me. I can very audibly hear John Myung's bass, which is always a good thing. I'd love to hear this song live.

42. Lifting Shadows Off A Dream

The placement does, again, seem too low for this song. From John Myung's opening harmonics to the end of the song, I'm moved by it. I don't know what it is about John, but it seems like every song he writes lyrics for becomes a fan favorite. When I first heard this song it became one of my favorites from Awake. Now all of awake is my favorite :D. I bought a six string partially because I really wanted to learn his bass harmonic line in the song. This song is at least 9/10. Anything lower is criminal

41. Wait For Sleep

I wish I could put this higher. I really do. It's such a beautiful piano piece by Kevin Moore. He is also, without a doubt, the best lyricist Dream Theater ever had. "She shuts the doors and lights and lays her body on the bed, where images and words are running deep. She has too much pride to pull the sheets above her head, so quietly she lays and waits for sleep". The piano work is beautiful and is a great intro to Learning To Live. If DT decides to play Learning To Live in the future, it had better be preceded by Wait For Sleep

AwakeFromOctavarium

I salute your low placement of Home. That song is seemingly over appreciated imo.

And Take Away My Pain is one of my favs off FII.

I don't understand how LSOAD can be that low despite your praise.

Pirate

You had better have some damn good songs later on if these are placed this low.

Let's put my Awake ranking in there for some perspective:

6:00 - 9.5/10
Caught In A Web 9.5/10
Innocence Faded 9/10
Erotomania 9.5/10
Voices 10/10
The Silent Man 9/10
The Mirror 9.5/10
Lie 9/10
Lifting Shadows 9/10
Scarred 9.5/10
Space-Dye Vest 10/10

Now tell me how I can praise it so highly and still rank it so low :P. It's difficult. I adore Awake in every possible way. But putting all eleven tracks in my top 20 would be kind of weird. So I did my best to spread it out. The rankings are still, I think, very accurate

Well I see. But I don't see the point in intentionally spreading the songs throughout the list.

... and did I just spot a spoiler there? :omg:

it's actually Mike Thinks He's DeeDee Ramone Introducing a Song Song

Zook

If he goes for the You Not Me #1 song joke, Wayne Brady's gonna smack a bitch.

Sorry guys but there won't be an update until later today. I've got a pretty full day ahead of me and I really don't have time to write up the descriptions at the moment

skydivingninja

Well including TDS in your top fifty above Innocence Faded and TSF has made me lose all my respect for you, Mr. PLM.

It's quite underrated. But a lot of these I would rank about the same, so I may have arbitrarily gave them ranking numbers. It was somewhat difficult to put rankings on some of the songs

The first half is a great song but I just can't forgive the last 2-3 minutes of the song. When a song has a point where you can just skip to the next track without thinking that's not a good thing.

Innocence Faded is good, but not great. TSF isn't really good IMO.

AcidLameLTE

I like This Dying Soul but I don't think it's nearly as good as Innocence Faded.

Sorry for the delay. Things are busy in the PLM household

40. Sacrificed Sons

Awesome song. I'm kind of upset that they didn't play it at the Philly show during PN '09. Anyway, Here we get a glimpse of Jordan's new Continuum, which can do some really cool stuff, but here it's kind of boring. The subject matter was kind of weird at first. I thought people would yell: "too soon!", but I was surprised. I thought the lyrics worked well with the song. The news samples in the intro go on a bit too long though. Otherwise, I give this song 9/10

39. The Answer Lies Within

Another gem from Octavarium, I feel this song is grossly unappreciated. The lyrics are really moving and I can kind of relate to them. This is also a great example of how Jordan can make a song great with his piano. I feel that JR should use more piano for some songs. He's a fantastic classical player. Anyway, as simple and straightforward as the song is I feel it stands out, and not just because it's a ballad. I'd have loved to hear it during the Octavarium tour.

38. The Ministry of Lost Souls

Systematic Chaos isn't the most consistent album, but The Ministry of Lost Souls is spectacular. It has a sort of 'epic' feel without actually being an epic. The instrumental section is great, despite what all you losers say about it. The only downside to this song, really, is that the outro solo is boring and goes on for too long. If JP had changed it up a bit then it would be great the whole way through. Still, it's just a great song. It's the only other song from SC that I haven't seen that I want to see live.

37. Just Let Me Breathe

Oh yes. I like this song. A lot. And I'll never understand why most of you despise it. It seems like the sort of song that would be awesome live if I got a chance to see it. It's a hard rocking song. Plus that awesome tapping instrumental part. I love that part. Falling Into Infinity needs more love. Always

36. Only A Matter of Time

A great closer. And first off, I don't care what anyone says, Dominici has a great voice, and he sounds really good on When Dream and Day Unite. This is another song that I'd like to see live at some point. The musicianship on WDADU is top notch and you can feel their youthful energy. I kind of wish they still had that. That's part of the reason listening to WDADU is a sweet experience. Kevin Moore's keyboards shine here as well. I don't think any other keyboardist has fully satisfied DT's 'sound' as well as Kevin did. He's truly amazing.

BRGM

Yeah SS totally rocks

TALW... :S okay then

TMOLS! It's really beautifull, the ending solo as well, there's nothing boring abou it, it gives me chills!

Just let me Brathe is a cool song IMO, I agree with you on that one

Only a matter of time...naah

Let's just say I wouldn't have picked any of those songs for my top 50.

orcus116

I think Jordan is a great classical player too but I would not point to something as bland and uninspired as TALW as an example.

Mladen

It's always good to see TMOLS in someone's top 50.

Only a matter of time as well.  :metal
