No way. It's definitely a product of the modern day DT firing on all cylinders though Intervals is about as close to Images/Awake style I've seen from them in awhile. Still an enjoyable listen though but it doesn't quite have the magic of ACOS.

ACOS was something I came across at a much later date than most DT fans, so it doesn't have the same magic for me that some others do. It flutters around the top 10 - top 15 to me, but I don't get the "best song" thing that most seem to with it.

Do you know the story behind it? Powerful stuff.
I don't know. What is it?

MP was in school and the class was about seizing the day; i.e Carpe Diem; and about appreciating those you love and not taking them for granted. He and his Mom had had a fight, but when he got home he kissed her and told her he loved her. She died in a plane crash that night. According to MP, if it hadn't been for that class that day he wouldn't have taken the opportunity to express his love to her before she died. (I think this is a pretty accurate synopsis, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on some point)
Oh, now I remember reading about that on his website. For some reason I couldn't remember. Thanks!

Oddly enough it was the last song on I&W to click for me, but when it did:  :hefdaddy

Learning to Live didn't click for me until quite recently. For the longest time I was always confused between Take the Time and Learning to Live, and since I don't like Take the Time I never listened to Learning to Live. But now that I know this song, wow.

So guys and girls, we're finally here, the last song from my list...

NUMBER ONE

NUMERO UNO

THE BEST THEM

You Not Me
:neverusethis:

1.- Trial Of Tears
This song is why people who bash FII should be shot in the fucking head.
What I love about this song is Myung, this is HIS song, he is all over the place with groovy bass lines, those awesome lyrics with one of the most catchiest chorus from them... "It's raining, raining", goddamn I just want to sing along every time, gets me chills every time.
DT haven't and will never do a song with this much atmosphere, even the solos give it another feeling the Petrucci's one it's great and I love Derek's solo(JR raped the solo at L@B).
I the instrumental section(Deep In Heaven), its their most inspired instrumental section ever.
AND "THE WASTELAND" OMG  :hefdaddy :hefdaddy :hefdaddy :hefdaddy :hefdaddy :hefdaddy :hefdaddy :hefdaddy :hefdaddy.

Trial of Tears isn't my #1, but I can't fault you for picking it.  :tup

tri.ad

Amazing choice. ToT is my fifth or sixth favourite DT song, and I can't blame you for having it at the top.

moffatt

Nice choice wouldn't make my top 15 though.

Whos going next?

Zydar

Good choice, it's not one of my very favourites but I have no problems with it.

BRGM

Cool song, but it hasn't clicked all the way for me, only the "It's raining" part and "The Wasteland" The rest is not memorable for me :S

AwakeFromOctavarium

I remember Trial of Tears was SDN's Top 1 as well. Would barely make it to my Top 20.

Maybe I'll throw together a top 50 in the next week or two and go :metal

You do it, BRGM. It's the only way you'll relieve yourself of being a n00b! :neverusethis:

But we already know how to list the Dream Theater songs in perfect backwards order starting from The Count Of Tuscany.

I didn't say I'd be going next

I said I'd throw the list together in the next two weeks.

I'll be fine going whoever is next

Turning my top 20 into a full top 50 with descriptions. I'll do them 5 at a time starting from 50. I'll take some time to think this through and then I'll start posting soon.

So I just spent the past ten minutes getting my top 50 listed.

It was actually kind of easy

So, if nobody is actually starting in the next few days I can have the first 5 ready by tomorrow

I have all their studio songs ranked, but I'm going a bit further on the descriptiveness on this than that last two did, so mine would take a while. I'd rather have a fair number of them already written up before I went that way you guys could be pleased for a while.

50. Honor Thy Father
This song suffers at parts from some pretty bad rap sections. The angsty lyrics also don't come off so good. Fortunately, those are redeemed with some great riffs, lightning fast drumming, and one of my personal favourite Rudess solos. The section with the movie voices was also quite effective.
49. The Mirror
This really sounds like more of a hard rock song than a prog metal song (aside from the lyrics). The simple drum beat and riffs make it so. However, the lyrics are great and I love the main melody in Space Dye Vest being played near the end.
48. Peruvian Skies
It starts out pretty boring, but once it gets heavy, this track instantly turns into a rocker. The main riff definitely sounds much better being played distorted than clean. The solo is also quite underrated.
47. Through Her Eyes
See, it always bugs me when people say DT are an emotionless band. Just listen to this work of art. I find it goes on a tad too long and would work better as a 3 minute song, but still. A beautiful track.
46. Fatal Tragedy
Here's a true prog metal song. With sudden breakdowns, a lightning fast instrumental section, and frequent time signature changes, this is a pretty crazy song. Quite entertaining.

Pirate

Fatal Tragedy at 46? That's questionable  :yeahright

I think you'll be more shocked that there is a popular song that I completely omitted from this list.  ;)

But just remember: I really like every song on this list. But I find there are many underrated Dream Theater songs that outdo FT along with the ones next. Also, I don't think Fatal Tragedy works as well as an individual track as it does along with the rest of the SFaM album (in fact, the whole album is like that). This is focused on individual tracks.

Next 5:
45. The Dark Eternal Night
The Pantera fan inside me raises his fists whenever this song plays. I know many hate this song, and the instrumental section does come off kinda pretentious, but it's quite the rocker. It also contains a great riff. And no, I do not hate the Portnoy growls.  ;)
44. A Fortune In Lies
Superb. I've never been a Dominici fan, but he doesn't take away from this great track. I really like the chorus here and the track as a whole is just great.
43. Lie
LaBrie shines here. I love the emotion he puts into the verses, and the real lows he hits. The solos in this song are absolute shredfests full of entertainment. The riffs are also amazing. Not much that I don't like about this one.
42. Caught In A Web
Is it just me or is there Alice in Chains influence here? This song has a memorable chorus, some interesting lyrics, and is just a really fun track. I really like this one.
41. Take The Time
Now many people may not like how low this is. Why it's down here is just that this song has a real huge 80s glam influence that kinda annoys me, but that's a personal thing. However, it's still a fun track with a brilliant instrumental section.

*awaits more criticism*

hefdaddy42

I wouldn't have ranked Caught In A Web that high, or Take The Time anywhere that low, but all songs selected thus far are good.

If it was about his dad, what would peoples reactions to The Best of Times be like?  :lol
