Seems like 8V is everyone's No3. Once again

8-5=3

It wouldn't be my number 3.  It would be a borderline top 20 song for me.

Really? To me, Octavarium sounds like something that could have come from the Images and Words/Awake days. Its easily in my top 5, but to each his own I guess.

No way. It's definitely a product of the modern day DT firing on all cylinders though Intervals is about as close to Images/Awake style I've seen from them in awhile. Still an enjoyable listen though but it doesn't quite have the magic of ACOS.

ACOS was something I came across at a much later date than most DT fans, so it doesn't have the same magic for me that some others do. It flutters around the top 10 - top 15 to me, but I don't get the "best song" thing that most seem to with it.

I'm aware of the story, but the music is what I'm mostly concerned with. And while its great, it still doesn't scream #1 DT song for me.

ACOS probably wouldn't even be a top 10 song for me, MAYBE a top 20

2.- Learning To Live

I&W best song, this song has everything, the best lyrics in their catalog, awesome music, lots of feeling, EVERYTHING.
This song has at least 4 'eargasmic' moments like, The F#, the acoustic solo before that, the WFS reprise, the outro... Goddamn.
DT haven't and will never match the awesomeness of this song. SERIOUSLY.

But if it's at second place, how come there's not a song as awesome as this song?

:neverusethis:

I like that cool melody kinda right before the outro, that's about it :)

Ranks # 1 for me.  Doesn't get much better than this (obviously).

I see ACOS as 100% pure unabashed, unique Dream Theater whereas Octavarium has some great parts but definitely some not as unique parts. I hear the intro and its clearly Shine On and the ending is pretty much stock prog epic ending. Full Circle and Intervals are still awesome though.

Learning to Live is certainly top tier.

I'm too lazy to do it, but can we get a top 49 going?

Just listened to Learning to Live twice to commemorate this joyous occasion..... :metal

My favourite DT song. I'm not a fanboy, but this is one of the few songs where I can say that I love every second of it.

Oddly enough it was the last song on I&W to click for me, but when it did:  :hefdaddy

Learning To Live is a classic. It was one of my first DT songs to learn on guitar. It's probably in my Top 5.

I believe their newer stuffs are technically more challenging. That's when it comes to guitar. But I do believe drum parts are easier in their newer works.

There were definitely more meter changes, etc, in the old stuff. They're in 4/4 a lot more nowadays, and when there are meter changes they aren't as often or abrupt. Remember the last 2 minutes of The Dance of Eternity? MP counts us through it on his Liquid Drum Experiment DVD, and it's INSANE.

AwakeFromOctavarium

Yeah but as they changed their rhythmic structure Petrucci's solos got more and more shreddy. I can NOT play the Best of Times solo. Or well, maybe I can, with a better guitar and a considerable amount of time.

I don't know. What is it?

MP was in school and the class was about seizing the day; i.e Carpe Diem; and about appreciating those you love and not taking them for granted. He and his Mom had had a fight, but when he got home he kissed her and told her he loved her. She died in a plane crash that night. According to MP, if it hadn't been for that class that day he wouldn't have taken the opportunity to express his love to her before she died. (I think this is a pretty accurate synopsis, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on some point)

Hmmm interesting, I've also noticed that songs gets alot easier to memorize when u know how to play'em, so maybe their older stuff will click for me easier if I learn those songs on guitar :D

LKap13

Learning to Live was the first DT song I ever heard. To this day it's my #1.

As for how difficult it is to play on drums/guitar here's my take:
Guitar: The old stuff is certainly more intricate and rhythmically complex. One is also benefitted by having classical guitar training if he wants to learn old JP parts. On the other hand, the new stuff tends to be faster and more physically demanding. Both are difficult in their own respect, it just depends what your strengths are on guitar. I myself am a classical guitar player who plays DT. For me, Learning to Live is easier to learn than something like Honor Thy Father, but again it will vary.

Drums: Though I don't play drums, it seems obvious to me that MP's 1992 stuff was a lot more consistently rhythmically complex than his current stuff. That is, MP used to vary his parts all throughout the song, like bar to bar. The parts MP had were unheard of, and amazing. He's still the best drummer in the world, and still puts out amazing parts, just not as consistently. For example, try to pinpoint the snare hits in Learning to Live; it's not so easy. There was just so much thought going into his drum parts back in the day.
