Great to see TLF getting some love. It's a top 15 song for me.

30.- Misunderstood
THE most experimental song DT has done.

Quote from: toro on July 20, 2010, 04:46:40 PM
The only downside of this song is the long outro, it goes on forever

I find this funny only because that first quote I thought eluded to what was dissolved in the second quote. I'm curious to see why you consider this song experimental if not for the long, creepy soundscape ending.

AwakeFromOctavarium

Disappear is higher than Misunderstood and FINALLY FREE? This list is going wrong.

I LOVE Misunderstood! Especially the outro! It's freaking wicked!!

Probably in my top 10

and yeah, the solos in Finally free are awesome!  and the Spirit carries on has a great solo too yeah. Disappear is one of my fav balladthingies! Haven't heard To Live Forever...I doubt it's magic.

That sounds like it's probably a fair and reasoned judgment.

Disappear is better than both of those songs.

BRGM

 :tup :lol

But isn't that like...old DT, To Live Forever? Their older stuff rarely caught my attention.

Excuse me. I understand if you say it's better than Misunderstood, but Finally Free is a masterpiece while Disappear is just a phenomenal song at best. I don't know how it can be any better than FF.

FF is a great song, but I've never really felt like it was top 10 material. I guess isn't as compact as Disappear is, I suppose that's why I like it more. Its not to say FF is overlong, but I just think Disappear does a better job at getting its point across in the time its on for than Finally Free does.

Toro, just out of curiosity, could you do a list of your dt album rankings in this thread too?

Seems like something ridiculous to say if you haven't heard it.  Especially since it IS magic.

TLF is pure magic. Agreed.
Pure mutherfuckin magic
This!
In my definition of magic (as cited in my post on ACoS), TLF just doesn't fit the bill. And it doesn't surprise me - LtL isn't magic, ACoS isn't magic - TLF definitely isn't magic.  :hat

Probably in my top 10

You said that about ~25 DT songs so far.

About TLF... I've said it a few times already, but I really prefer the '91 version to the '94 one. I particularly like the guitar tone better.

I prefer it too. Like you said, the guitar sounds much nicer in the '91 version.

I can see your point, but not liking the outro has nothing to do with me thinking it's their most experimental song they have done.

BRGM

Well, what can I say? nothing special, Surrounded, Silent man, Carpe Diem are all better balladish song from their 90's

I must also say that the solo he did there on the live in tokio!! wasn't as awesome as the ones he does nowdays, the guitars sound is too flat for my taste. I like the CiM Surrounded and Schmedley wilcox solos more. And an honorable mention to the Tourbulence solos!  :hefdaddy

Last half of the list  :hat

25.- The Mirror
I still wonder how the band managed to take a simple riff and transform it into one of the heaviest song they have done.
The simple but powerful drums go really great with song, the tempo and key changes keeps it from being boring, great work from Kevin Moore, that awesome SDV reprise goes surprisingly well with the song and is the only way we could see SDV live(at least a small part). James LaBrie vocals are great just like all of Awake.
This was MP's first shot at lyrics and it was a really great start.

24.- Stream Of Consciousness
Pure wankery.
DT's longest instrumental, has an awesome, AWESOME drumming from Portnoy, a face raping solo from Jhon Petrucci, awesome keyboard work from Rudess, great basslines from JMX.
Overall a great instrumental but it could be 1 or 2 minutes shorter.

23.- The Root of All Evil
Their second best way to open any album ever(after '6:00')
The intro just gets me pumped and went the first riff hits im ready to headbang.  :metal
As almost always great keyboard, guitar and bass work.
The reprises here are really great(unlike TSF) the second best song from Octavarium.

22.- In The Presence Of Enemies, Pt. 1
Their third best way to open any album ever. :p
The instrumental intro is one of their best intrumental work since TOT, i love the guitar tone on this song i really don't know why, but it's fantastic and you can hear myung, that's always great.
Dark/scary keyboard, guitar and bass parts + the dark but cheesy lyrics makes this The best song from SC.

21..- A Mind Beside Itself - I.Erotomania
Another instrumental.
The firs time i heard this song the organ intro made me doubt about the song but i listened to all of it and i was blown away.
The best part of this song is the guitar work, with that string skipping solo, just amazing. The keyboards give this song a dreamy feeling, and i love that and that little bass solo at the end gives another dreamy touch to the song.
:tup

BRGM

I like all those songs!!  :tup    except Erotomania though, but still, I do agree that the little bass solo in the end that goes into Voices is pretty cool.

I found ITPOE Part 1 to be decent at best. Other than that, pretty much agree with most of your choices.

Sorry dude, but i'm not subscribing to this. I understand your motives. You are tired of being the forum noob, and I can't say I blame you. I do, however, resent your sudden rivalry with me (I know I'm an easy target) and your desperate attempts to raise your post counts. There are several other methods that will gain you respect on the forums.
